  • Following the success of the Yankees’ pitching wave comes hope after Gerrit Cole’s injury concerns

Following the success of the Yankees’ pitching wave comes hope after Gerrit Cole’s injury concerns

CLEARWATER, Fla. — There would be no replacing Gerrit Cole, an ace of aces whose arm represents the clearest route to a Yankees World Series, and whose elbow required an MRI on Monday.

But an ominous, dark day for the Yankees did include a speck of hope for the depth, if not the front, of the rotation.

If Cole needs to miss time, three competitors for a rotation spot — if not immediately then at some point — looked promising in combining for 10 ²/₃ innings of one-run, six-hit, 14-strikeout ball.

On a split-squad day that showcased some of the remaining depth options for the rotation, Clayton Beeter, Luis Gil and Will Warren looked like they could be ready to help in the majors soon.

Clayton Beeter throws during the first inning of a spring training baseball game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, March 11, 2024, in Clearwater, Fla.AP

“For as much pitching depth as we’ve had to trade away this winter … I am excited about that next wave of arms,” manager Aaron Boone said at BayCare Ballpark, where Beeter and Gil dazzled in a 2-1 win over the Phillies. “I do feel like the pitching depth that we have is strong. On what level is it ready to compete now? That’s what you have to find out.”

Facing what might be the Opening Day lineup for the Phillies, Beeter allowed two hits and no runs while striking out four in four innings.

The return from the 2022 Joey Gallo trade, Beeter relied upon fastballs to get ahead in counts and sliders to finish off batters. Alec Bohm swung through three straight sliders. Kyle Schwarber, too, whiffed for strike three on the pitch.

“I saw the lineup today, I was excited to face those guys,” said Beeter, a 25-year-old righty. “Just keeps giving me confidence that my stuff plays up here.”

Beeter handed off to Gil, who was the most impressive pitcher on the day.

Luis Gil #81, reacts as he walks off the mound after pitching a scoreless first inning against Tigers.Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post

The righty, ready to start his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, was electric through 3 ²/₃ innings in which he allowed one hit and walked one. Of the 11 outs he recorded, eight came via strikeout.

In one fun battle, he got ahead of Bryce Harper with a slider and changeup that both induced whiffs before reaching back for 99.6 mph that blew Harper away.

“Wow. … He was dominant. That was dominant,” Boone said of Gil, who already has been optioned out of major league camp but more so because the Yankees are building him up slowly following the May 2022 surgery. “I kept turning, like, anyone else seeing this?

“You can very easily see him factoring in [to the majors] in some role. I mean, that [stuff] works.”

Phillies bats could not figure out Gil, swinging 26 times and missing 15. He mixed in changeups and sliders but could lean upon the upper-90s fastballs when he needed an out.

“[I felt] excellent, thank God,” Gil said in Spanish, adding that it had been several years since he felt this good.

Back in Tampa, Warren — who might be the most big-league ready of the Yankees’ starting pitcher prospects, but is not yet on the 40-man roster — allowed a run on three hits with three strikeouts against an impressive Orioles lineup.

“I feel like I’ve been ready [for the majors],” said Warren, who pitched in 21 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season. “Whenever that time comes, hopefully sooner rather than later, I’m ready to do whatever it takes to win.”

Reba McEntire is one of the most in-demand names in television right now. In addition to her recurring role on The Voice and the yet-to-be-named comedy that’s currently in the works at NBC, the showrunners behind Young Sheldon are reportedly vying to get one more guest appearance out of her.

Executive producer Steve Holland recently told TVLine that they’re in discussions with McEntire about having her return to the Young Sheldon set before the end of the show’s seventh and final season this spring.

Young Sheldon': Everyone Wants to See Reba McEntire Return in Season 7

“We would love to have her back,” Holland said. “She’s expressed interest, but she’s very busy. She has another [sitcom] pilot that she’s shooting…so I just don’t know if it’s going to work out.”

“It’s just a matter of logistics,” he added.

Fans of the CBS hit will recall that McEntire made her debut as hairstylist June Ballard, ex-wife of Dale (Craig T Nelson), in season three. The country legend appeared in a total of six episodes through season five.

Colombian singer and songwriter Shakira is one of the most famous pop stars in the music industry. She is known for her unique vocal style that combines pop, rock, Latin, and Middle Eastern influences. However, more than her songs, she made headlines for her personal life.

The Colombian singer has been in the headlines over her break up with her longtime boyfriend, Gerard Pique. Their split came as a shock for many as the two have been together for nearly 11 years. As the former Spanish football player moved on, the pop star is also seemingly moving on with her life.

A few days ago, Shakira and Lewis Hamilton were seen having dinner together at the Cipriani restaurant in downtown Miami. Their outing followed the singer’s Wednesday arrival in Barcelona with her daughters Sasha and Milan. She used the trip to watch the Spanish Grand Prix, which was hosted in Catalonia and saw Hamilton reclaim the podium after finishing second to Max Verstappen.

Since Shakira and Hamilton were repeatedly spotted together in Miami after the race, rumours of a romance between them have erupted. Speculations regarding their affair began once more on Sunday night after pictures of the Colombian and the Briton dining together in a Barcelona restaurant were posted on social media.

Daniel Caesar, Mustafa, a Sudanese singer-songwriter, and Kendall Jenner‘s close friend, Emirati model Fai Khadra, were all present for supper at the city’s well-known Japanese restaurant El Parco.

Shakira and Hamilton are at least very close friends, but the British race car driver recently acknowledged that he had been ardently seeking a “Latina” lover. During the occasion, the Mercedes driver declared, “I need to find a Latina,” indicating that he was hunting for a girlfriend.

‘The Voice’: Reba McEntire Pretends to Call Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman to Win Over Singer Ronnie Wilson

The coaches are pulling out all the stops to try and win their final team members!

The Voice coaches are pulling out all the stops to try and win their final team members for season 25!

Ronnie Wilson, a 28-year-old South Carolina native, took the stage for Monday’s Blind Auditions, with a rendition of Zayn’s “Pillowtalk” that impressed the season 25 coaches — Reba McEntire, John Legend, Chance the Rapper and Dan + Shay — and earned chair turns from Reba and John.

At first, it seemed like Ronnie and John might have more common ground. Ronnie revealed that he’s a full-time accountant. While he’s now an EGOT winner, John also worked as a “management consultant” before pursuing music full-time.

However, when Ronnie named gospel and country as his top two musical influences, Reba saw her opportunity.

She cut John off, pretending to lift a phone to her ear.

“Nicole, would you put Keith on the line, please?” she teased, pretending to speak with fellow country star Keith Urban and his wife, Nicole Kidman. “Hey, Keith, how ya doin’? Yeah, we’re here at The Voice — if you were on The Voice, who would you want to coach you? Me? Nicole said her too?”

Unfortunately, Reba’s pitch falls just a little bit short, and Ronnie ends up joining Team Legend.

ET spoke with the season 25 coaches ahead of the premiere, where they shared what it’s been like to welcome The Voice’s first-ever coaching duo to the competition.

“They give great notes. They’re really good,” Reba praised. “They’re knowledgeable about the business but they also have a lot of heart and that’s what they’re going for.”

Dan + Shay say they’ve been fans of the show for years — they served as mentors for Blake Shelton’s team back in season 20 and even stepped in to guest coach Niall Horan’s team last season — but getting to serve as full-time coaches for the first time has been a whole new experience.

“It’s changed everything for us,” Shay admitted. “I just really enjoy the process of getting to work with these artists, and you really, you get attached. It becomes heartbreaking when you have to let people go. But it’s been an amazing experience.”

Chance the Rapper makes his return this season for the first time since his season 23 Voice debut, where he joined Blake, Niall and Kelly Clarkson. He told ET that it’s especially exciting to be back with a whole new roster of coaching talent.

“I’ve always just admired John and he’s helped me in so many different ways,” he reflected. “To be working with him and then to be around Reba, and Dan + Shay, and with this amazing crew… I do miss Blake, but it’s just cool to be back in the building.”

Despite the good vibes, however, the coaches are still plenty competitive. With Niall stepping away this season after winning back-to-back titles, the Voice trophy is up for grabs — and there’s a better-than-average chance it could go to a first-time champion, as only John has won the competition before.

“It’s getting heated out there for sure,” Shay revealed.

“That’s why we’re here,” Reba agreed.

The Voice airs Mondays at 8 p.m. PT/ET and and Tuesdays at 9 p.m. PT/ET on NBC.

  • Max Verstappen and Helmut Marko Leaving Could Ensure Fernando Alonso Finally Getting That Red Bull Seat

The developments at Red Bull have been taking dramatic turns every day. Earlier yesterday, team advisor, Helmut Marko revealed that he was possibly now under investigation by the team related to the media leaks in the Christian Horner case. On top of this, the rumors about Max Verstappen choosing the exit door along with Marko have also been picking up credence in the paddock. But if both, Marko and Verstappen are to leave the Bulls, this opens the door perfectly for Fernando Alonso to assume that Red Bull seat.

According to F1 journalist Piergiuseppe Donadoni (as quoted on X (formerly Twitter)), Helmut Marko was firmly against Alonso joining the Bulls. Hence, if both Verstappen and Marko are out of the picture, then, Alonso becomes a prime candidate to jump ship from Silverstone to Milton Keynes.

One needs to take these rumors and theories with a pinch of salt, though. As of now, these reports are unconfirmed paddock chatter as neither Verstappen nor Marko have publicly made any comments or announcements about a possible departure. However, if this is to be true then Alonso gets a well-deserved shot at his third F1 title.

While Red Bull would be a lucrative destination for the Spaniard, that may not be the case for the Bulls. Alonso is currently 42 years old, and by the time his contract is up at the end of this year, he will be 43.

Naturally, the Austrian team will be more inclined to pin their hopes on a younger driver with the likes of Lando Norris or Carlos Sainz being a potential option to replace Max Verstappen.

Red Bull makes bold moves despite the threat of losing Max Verstappen

This entire controversy about potentially seeing Max Verstappen ditch the Red Bull started after Helmut Marko revealed to ORF that he was under investigation by the team. The Austrian ex-racing driver remained tight-lipped about the other details but said that his attendance at the 2024 Australian GP was now in question.

After Marko’s revelations, media outlets started reporting that the investigation against Marko was about the media leak of the alleged chats between Christian Horner and the female employee who had lodged the complaint against him for “inappropriate behavior” towards her.

In the aftermath, Verstappen has hinted towards considering his future at Red Bull, if Marko gets the pink slip. Verstappen reportedly said (as quoted on X), “Then we might have a big problem in the team, yes,” when quizzed about Marko’s potential dismissal.

What’s more, The Daily Mail reports that Christian Horner has claimed that he can win without Verstappen and Marko and has no problems if the duo decides to leave.

Tyson Fury on Mike Tyson Working with Ngannou: I Think That It’s Sad; The Man I’m Named After Has to Go Against Me

Tyson Fury can’t help but feel a bit dismayed by a particularly glaring irony heading into his high-profile showdown with Francis Ngannou. (photo by @threethirtythree)

The WBC heavyweight titlist from Manchester, England, is set to go 10 rounds on Oct. 28 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, in what will be mark Ngannou’s boxing debut.

Guiding Ngannou is boxing great Mike Tyson, whose name was the inspiration for Fury’s own.

In a recent interview, Fury (33-0-1, 24 KOs) noted the unfortunate paradox of their circumstance.

“I think that it’s sad, actually,” Fury told Sky Sports. “The man that I am named after, a legend, has to go against me and then come out as a loser, having lost to a man who was named after him. I think that it’s sad and I think that he should be in my corner, not the opposing corner, but business is business and I understand that it’s strictly business.”

At the same time, Fury is not expecting his namesake to produce any meaningful improvements in Ngannou.

“No matter what he teaches this fella, no matter how much boxing training he does, everyone has got a plan until they get punched in the face,” Fury sad. “And I’m not sure who said that, but that is true. They’ve all got a plan until they get smacked in the mouth.”

The 37-year-old Ngannou, of Cameroon, parted ways with the UFC earlier this year. The move allowed the heavyweight to link up with the Professional Fighters League. Ngannou’s contract with the PFL allows him to participate in a boxing match.

Fury, 35, has not fought since December, when he stopped countryman Derek Chisora in 10 rounds. Fury was then involved in protracted talks to fight unified champion Oleksandr Usyk but their negotiations broke down repeatedly over their purse.

Derek Chisora brands Francis Ngannou the ‘Superman of Africa’ in a heartfelt speech after the former UFC champion’s defeat by Anthony Joshua

Derek Chisora paid a heartfelt tribute to Francis Ngannou following his defeat by Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia.

Joshua floored the Cameroonian in the first round with a right hand to the chin then again early in the second with a right-left hook combination.

The former UFC champion got to his feet but was quickly put back down by a strong right hand, after which the referee put a stop to the contest.

Despite the defeat, Chisora paid his respect to Ngannou in the post fight press conference by branding him the ‘Superman of Africa’.

‘Francis, I’ve been doing loads of interviews and I came up with a nickname for you,’ said Chisora from the media section.

‘I call you the Superman of Africa because the way you have come up in the game and everything you have done is amazing for us Africans.

‘So the best name for me to give to you is the Superman of Africa because most kids in Africa right now look up to you – and what you have achieved so far is unbelievable.’

While Ngannou may have lost his first two boxing fights, his story as one of combat sports biggest names will come as an inspiration to many.

The 37-year-old was willing to sacrifice it all to become a boxer. He left his country of birth Cameroon and family to do just that, ending up homeless in France with no money.

Despite wanting to be a boxer, Ngannou trained at the MMA Factory and made his debut in the sport in 2013 just three months after starting training. In early 2014 he had won his first heavyweight tournament, joining the UFC in 2015.

It was there he ran riot, securing six straight victories before losing his heavyweight championship opportunity against Stipe Miocic in 2018.

Re-climbing the division, however, he knocked out the very same man in 2021 to win the belt, defending it against Ciryl Gane and finding himself on top of the sport.

When his contract expired in January 2023, he was stripped of his title after the two parties failed to reach an agreement on a new deal, and he turned to boxing.

Reba, 68, fought back tears during blind auditions on this week’s episode of The Voice after hearing a heartfelt story from a contestant.
The Queen of Country slammed her buzzer while listening to 16-year-old William Alexander’s performance of the song Ceilings.
After he finished his audition, the Staten Island native revealed that he chose the track in honor of his grandfather who died last year.
“Singing that song, I was actually singing it for my grandfather who passed away last year.

“He always said that he believed in me and it’s just crazy being here now,” William explained, tearing up while on stage.
Reba then spoke up, asking the teen if he was really “thinking of his grandfather” during his song.
“Cause when I’m singing a song and I’m thinking about my mama my voice gets real high like that,” she joked, imitating a crying whimpering sound.
“Then I start gasping and then I can’t sing anymore. How did you do that?” she asked.

William replied, “I just pictured him hearing this and seeing me do this. It just made me feel so proud to be here.”
“Wonderful, wonderful,” Reba gushed, adding, “You’re going to have somebody with you all the time.”

The country singer started to break down in tears as she confessed, “Now I’m getting choked up and I’m going to have to start talking very high.
“But I thought you did a great job. Your voice is a beautiful gift and I’d love to have you on my team,” she shared.

Reba then grabbed a tissue and wiped the tears out of her eyes.
    ROOTING FOR REBA!
Over the last several weeks, fans have predicted that Reba will win Season 25 of The Voice.
Ahead of the season premiere last month, NBC shared behind-the-scenes photos of The Voice coaches on Instagram.
In the collection, Reba posed with singer John Legend, 45; rapper Chance the Rapper, 30; and country singing duo Dan Smyers, 36, and Shay Mooney, 31.
The country singer seemed to be mocking her co-stars as she spoke to them on a bullhorn.

In one of the photos in the Instagram carousel, newcomers Dan & Shay smiled widely as they sat in the red chairs.
In 2023, they joined the judge’s panel for Season 25.
Although this is the first time a pair will sit on the panel, they served as Battle Advisors on Blake Shelton’s team in 2020.
In the comments section, viewers praised Reba while sharing their concerns about the first-timers.
“Not keen on this Dan and Shay situation. Why? Who are they really?” a critic trolled.

“Yes! #TeamReba all the way!” one fan cheered.
“I’m not sure about this Dan and Shay thing,” another critic added.
“Outside of Reba, the rest is kind of meh. She’s the real deal!” another fan gushed.
“Not liking the new judges sorry,” a fourth person wrote.
“Go #TeamReba! You should have broken up that row of males and put Reba in the middle! She looks outnumbered! However, she’s pretty feisty! So I’m not worried!” a commentator chimed.

  • New York Yankees fans are panicking over this injury-related update

New York Yankees fans are panicking over this injury-related update

If you were to rank players on the New York Yankees based on importance for this season, a few names would be vying for the top spot on your list. Of course, both halves of the team’s new dynamic duo, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, would have to be considered.

For my money, however, the easy choice for “most important Yankee” this season is Gerrit Cole, which is why this update from MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch was extremely concerning to read:

Gerrit Cole is having an MRI on his pitching elbow, Aaron Boone told reporters in Clearwater.

    — Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) March 11, 2024

    Here’s more from Bryan Hoch:

Boone said that Gerrit Cole has been having trouble with his recovery between starts. According to Boone, Cole likened it to what he feels during the season after 100 pitches. — Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) March 11, 2024

For the 33-year old Yankees’ ace, and for fans of the team, this new could not come at a worse time.

    Yankees’ ace Gerrit Cole /

Though front office officials would never openly admit this, it’s abundantly clear that the Yankees are going for it in 2024. They traded organizational depth to acquire Alex Verdugo and Juan Soto, both of whom will be free agents after this year.

They also signed Marcus Stroman to a two-year contract, meaning that after 2025, he too will have the chance to be a free agent.

The team has spent money, and traded assets, to improve this year’s roster in multiple ways. There may be question marks for this team in future years, but in 2024, they’re primed for a deep playoff run.

They may even have more moves coming, as New York has been connected to free agent left-handers Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery in recent weeks.

This entire plan, however, is centered around Gerrit Cole being the ace of their staff.

If there is one area of the roster that fans are uneasy about, it’s the starting rotation. Behind Cole on the depth chart, we find Carlos Rodon, Stroman, Nestor Cortes and Clarke Schmidt.

At their best, each player has shown flashes of true brilliance in recent years. That said, at their worst, each pitcher has gone through extended stretches of injury and/or inconsistency.

Up until today, you haven’t been able to say that about Gerrit Cole, but now, his future is also uncertain. From what we know, it could be days, if not weeks, until we learn the diagnosis.

So, for now, all we can do is sit and wait.

    And hope.

We Found the Ten Biggest Problems Facing the 2024 New York Yankees

Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees answered a lot of questions during the offseason, but these problems still remain as the team begins Spring Training.

Can Carlos Rodon Have a Healthy Season?

Can Carlos Rodon Have a Healthy Season?

There’s a correlation between Rodon’s health, and his performance on the field. The more he pitches, the better’s pitched over the course of his career.

The difference between Rodon starting 15 games, and starting 25, is massive for the Yankees this season.

Is a “Leaner” Giancarlo Stanton a Meaner Giancarlo Stanton?

Is a “Leaner” Giancarlo Stanton a Meaner Giancarlo Stanton?

Giancarlo Stanton appears to be a lean, mean, fighting machine according to social media. Will his physical change allow him to stay healthy for a longer portion of the season?

And, even if he’s healthy, can he hit above .200 at this point in his career? Those are huge questions when it comes to the middle of the lineup.

    Who Will Replace Michael King?

    Who Will Replace Michael King?

This was a question before he was dealt to San Diego, but now, it’s an even more pressing question. King’s “Swiss army knife” role in the bullpen will be extremely hard to replace this season.

Will Anthony Rizzo Suffer Any Post-Concussion Issues?

Will Anthony Rizzo Suffer Any Post-Concussion Issues?

Post-concussion syndrome is a very real thing, and can haunt athletes for years after they stop playing. Rizzo showed that, before his injury, he’s still capable of playing well offensively and defensively.

Can he return to that after an extended rest period, or does he return as a shell of his former self?

    What Exactly Is Nestor Cortes?

    What Exactly Is Nestor Cortes?

It’s been the tale of two Nestor’s during most of Cortes’ career. He was a revelation for the Yankees in 2022, but when 2023 rolled around, he couldn’t stay healthy long enough to be effective as a starter.

So, with time to recover, does he return to his 2022 form, or was that year simply a flash in the pan?

Can Anthony Volpe Round Out His Game?

Can Anthony Volpe Round Out His Game?

This isn’t as much of a problem, per se, as it is an experiment. Volpe showed flashes of the player that fans want him to be last season: an on-base machine, who hits at the top of the order, steals bases, and plays solid defense.

As the year went on, he regressed, and though his power was impressive for a rookie, his on-base percentage was not. Can he play a more well-rounded, complete style in 2024?

Who Replaces Wandy Peralta as the Top Lefty Reliever?

Who Replaces Wandy Peralta as the Top Lefty Reliever?

When healthy, Wandy Peralta and Jonathan Loaisiga are always Aaron Boone’s first calls from the bullpen. Loaisiga returns, but Peralta does not.

Will Boone be able to trust newcomers Caleb Ferguson and Victor Gonzalez in the same way that he trusted Peralta over the past few seasons?

Do the Yankees Have a True Starting Catcher?
