The portrait artist referenced ‘exiled princes and princesses of the past that lurk in the background’ as inspirations behind his Sussex paintings

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been portrayed as historical British royal figures in a series of new works by a Welsh portrait artist.

Dan Llywelyn Hall, from Barry in South Wales, had risen to fame when he was commissioned by the Welsh Rugby Union to create a portrait of Elizabeth II – making him the youngest artist, at 32, to paint the late Queen – in 2012.

In the 12 years since, he’s painted actual subjects including Prince William, the Queen’s funeral, King Charles III’s Coronation procession and Nigel Farage.

But now, Llywelyn Hall has produced 10 new portraits inspired by royalty throughout history for the 150th anniversary of the Society of Antiquaries – which will go on display at an exhibition at Burlington House on Piccadilly in London.

The painter’s two most cutting portraits focus on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – who are depicted respectively as Bonnie Prince Charlie and Dame Elizabeth Grey, Queen of England by marriage to King Edward IV.

He said: “The Royal Family is possibly the most enthralling longest-running drama in history, the inspiration of theatre, books and every art form.

“It seemed that these figures caught on the knife edge of public opinion were ideal for drawing comparisons from distant monarchs – like the exiled princes and princesses of the past that lurk in the background but are still irrevocably tied to the job.

“We can’t help ourselves and wonder whatever next?”

The painter drew inspiration from the “exiled princes and princesses of the past that lurk in the background”

Llywelyn Hall, talking about Meghan’s portrait, called Returning White Queen, said: “I thought putting Meghan in the role of the White Queen, who was a Queen Consort and possibly the most influential ‘outsider’ in royal history, might have a fine irony to it and not necessarily beyond the realms of reality.”

While on his Harry headshot, a piece entitled Spectre Of The Bonny Prince, he said: “I have entered the story before he met Meghan – the young party-goer with his future very much in the balance, a bit like the Bonnie Prince I have likened him to.”

More generally, and reflecting on his previous and latest pieces of royal art, the artist said said: “I see the subject of royalty [as] utterly irresistible and rich succour for art.

“The funeral piece and the subsequent King’s Coronation piece are part of that lineage and my part in interpreting our times.”

He’s also painted Barbara Windsor in a portrait called An East End Girl

He acknowledged there is now a large amount of photography of the Royal Family but said a painting can have “greater authenticity”.

Among his other subjects? One Nigel Farage, who sat for him some five years ago for his portrait, entitled Mr Brexit, and Dame Barbara Windsor, who featured in another work called An East End Girl.

While other works in his contributions to the Society of Antiquaries’s exhibition include portraits of Mary I, Mary of Austria, Henry VI, and Anglo-Saxon king Athelstan, who ruled from 927 until his death in 939.

He has also included Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, known as Llywelyn the Last, one of the most powerful princes of Gwynedd.

Llywelyn Hall said: “There are virtually zero depictions, painted or otherwise, of Welsh nobility – and this was as frustrating as liberating.”

Megyn Kelly has another bone to pick with Meghan Markle and this time it’s because she has an issue with the fact she refers to Prince Harry as ‘her husband’.

On the latest episode of her podcast, The Megyn Kelly Show, the American media commentator slammed Markle and said she’d had enough.

‘We get it, you bagged the gorilla,’ she said on Tuesday’s episode.

‘Congratulations, you got the big bear, [and] you want us all to know.’

The comments were in response to the latest episode of Markle’s own podcast, Archetypes, when she said that her husband was ‘great’ with contributing equally to parenting.

‘Oh, my husband? Oh, he’s great,’ she said.

‘[He] gets [Archie] downstairs’, while she added she would make breakfast for the family.

‘It’s very important to me. I love doing it.’

With Christopher Anderson, author of The King: The Life of Charles III, Kelly’s guest on the program, the pair also discussed claims made in the Oprah interview, including a part where Markle said she never looked up the Royal family prior to her relationship.

Anderson claimed that, like ‘every other young woman’, she knew exactly who they were.

‘Let’s get real, there’s always that eligible bachelor,’ Kelly agreed.

‘For my age, it was JFK Jr., for her age it was Prince Harry.’

Kelly also criticised the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for ‘ripping on the Royals to whom they owe, literally, all of their fame and most of their fortune.’

The comments come as the world waits to see the contents of Harry’s memoir, Spare, which will now be released on January 10 after being delayed due to the Queen’s passing.

The 416-page book has been billed by publisher Penguin Random House as a work of ‘raw, unflinching honesty’.

Relatives were not given a heads-up on the title – a reference to the phrase the ‘the heir and the spare’ – in advance of last week’s announcement, with a source telling the Daily Mail it will be seen as both ‘controversial’ and ‘provocative’.

Harry has previously called the book a ‘truthful and wholly accurate’ portrait of his life – the prospect of which has sent shockwaves through the royal establishment.

Meghan Markle feels ‘betrayed’ as Prince Harry reconnects with Kate Middleton

Prince Harry has reconnected with Kate Middleton since she was diagnosed with cancer, a source has revealed, adding that their “special” but “secret” reunion has not set well with Meghan Markle.

According to Life & Style, the Princess of Wales confides in Harry about her battle with cancer even though he leaked their private matters in his interviews and bombshell memoir, Spare.

While the two haven’t been seen together since the Duke of Sussex moved to US with his wife, an insider has claimed that the duo have reestablished contact.

At first, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex was “blindsided and felt, maybe, a bit betrayed,” however, due to gravity of Kate’s diagnosis, the former star set aside her feelings.

“She accepts that she wasn’t around when Kate and Harry first became friends” and knows that her husband “really respected and admired Kate before things got bad between all of them.”

So, the Duchess seems to have accepted their re-established bond, the source noted before alluding that it might lead to end of their years-long feud.

“Harry, William, Kate and Meghan haven’t put the past behind them just yet,” added the tipster. “For the first time in a long time, though, there’s promise.”

Sarah and Andrew’s 10-year marriage ended in 1996 – but the pair of exes have maintained a sturdy friendship in the years since

The Duchess of York has provided an update on her relationship with ex-husband Prince Andrew amid growing speculation over the former couple’s status.

Speaking on a promotional tour for her latest romance novel, Sarah was asked whether she would ever tie the knot with her ex-husband – Britain’s least popular royal, according to YouGov polling.

But in a cut-and-dry rebuke, Fergie said: “I get asked that all the time! We’re happy with the way we are right now, thank you.”

While she was quick to shut down the line of questioning of late, the 64-year-old duchess has been a little less clear in the past.

At a prior promotional event for her writings, she was also asked whether a remarriage was on the cards.

Ferguson had replied: “He’s still my handsome prince… He’ll always be my handsome prince. It’s lovely that we are such a family and the story has a happy ending all the time.

And she has previously declared: “We’re divorced to each other, not from each other. We are co-parents who support each other and believe that family is everything.

“I’m proud of the job we have done together in bringing up our children and sustaining a strong family unit. Our bywords are communication, compromise and compassion.”Sarah shared words with ex-rugby star Mike Tindall at Royal Ascot last week

While royal historian Marlene Koenig has told GB News: “Remarriage would make Sarah a member of the Royal Family, with pressures that have not existed since their divorce.

“I cannot predict, but I would be surprised if they remarried. Their relationship improved with divorce.”

Sarah and Andrew’s 10-year marriage ended in 1996 – but the pair of exes have since maintained a sturdy friendship, with Fergie even taking up residence at Royal Lodge, the duke’s home since 2003.

Piers Morgan is set to attack Meghan Markle’s “downright lies” in an upcoming interview with Australia’s “60 Minutes.”

The former “Good Morning Britain” anchor sat down with journalist Karl Stefanovic to discuss his war on cancel culture as well as his ongoing battle with the Duchess of Sussex, with whom he’s been fighting since she allegedly ghosted him and their friendship.

“I don’t believe a word she says,” Morgan, 56, said of Markle, 39, in a sneak peek at Sunday’s episode.

Looking back on the “Suits” alum’s since-refuted claim that she and Harry, 36, had secretly married days before their royal wedding in May 2018, Morgan added, “They were downright lies. … That [ceremony] would make the Archbishop of Canterbury a criminal.”

It’s ironic that Morgan sat down with Stefanovic, as the Nine Network presenter, 46, has been one of Markle’s staunchest defenders. Stefanovic also once called Morgan “disgraceful.”

In the clip from their interview, the TV personalities butted heads after Morgan claimed that Markle was pretending to be in love with Harry.

“I’ve got something to say about that,” Stefanovic replied. “I think that’s disgraceful. I think she is an amazing, amazing woman. I think she is doing her very best at the moment, and she’s got a lot on her plate. She’s doing it so beautifully. She’s such a great export for Great Britain.”

Turning his ire on Morgan, Stefanovic added, “I mean, what is that guy on? He’s lost the plot completely.

“I don’t know how his poor co-host puts up with it. Imagine putting up with a dude like that who is so up himself and so egotistical that he would assume to say those things about her?”

Morgan quit “Good Morning Britain” in March after he stormed off the set during a heated discussion about Markle and Harry.

In Stevanovic’s forthcoming interview with Morgan, he dubs his fellow journalist “an angry old man.”

“Freedom of speech is actually more important than the Meghan Markle debacle,” Morgan responded. “Who are these ‘woke’ people marching around like they are Kim Jong Un with a dash of Vladimir Putin?

“Come on, everybody, take a chill pill.”

Fact Check: Did Meghan Markle File $80m Harry Divorce Papers? YES… see full details here

The Marca article, published on July 2, 2023, titled:

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s marriage has been well-documented over the past 12 months with a podcast, a documentary series, and Harry’s autobiography, Spare, offering insight into their celebrity life together.

Details of the couple’s relationship have often been shared alongside the growing distance and separation of Prince Harry from the royal family, the pair sharing much of the fallout publicly.

The Marca article, published on July 2, 2023, titled: "Meghan Markle's astronomical divorce fee from Prince Harry revealed" mentions the $80 million filing directly, stating: "Adding to all these rumours, the British press is also reporting that Markle has filed a financial demand for 80 million dollars to sign the divorce papers, as well as demanding sole custody of their two children."

The article makes no reference to any original or immediately verifiable sources, naming only the "British press". Apart from the fact that it appears no British newspaper or media outlet has made this claim, Prince Harry and Meghan were seen together in public less than two weeks ago, in Santa Barbara, California.

The article by Showbiz Cheat Sheet, published June 8, 2023, discusses the plausibility of divorce rumors but doesn't mention a divorce filing.

Although the pair have been subject to rumors about the state of their marriage, sources close to the couple have dismissed these claims saying they are "happy together", reports say.

The gossip circus that has followed them has often invited spurious and misleading claims too, with one suspicious rumor shared on social media this week that Markle had filed divorce papers for an extraordinary sum.

A tweet by commentator Ada Lluch, posted on July 11, 2023, and viewed 6.9 million times, claimed that Meghan Markle had “allegedly filed divorce papers asking for $80 million plus the total custody of Archie and Lilibet.”

The tweet read: “Rumors are that Meghan Markle is separating from Harry

“She took him from his family after she embarrassed the British Royal Family and made his whole nation hate him.

“Now that Harry is broke and lonely because of her, she has allegedly filed divorce papers asking for $80 million plus the total custody of Archie and Lilibet.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been the source of multiple false rumors on social media, which have included Markle lying about her age, and listing herself as “caucasian” on a “babe” site.

This latest claim is no more accurate than some of this other gossip.

Responding to Newsweek, Lluch said her tweet was based on two articles from Spanish news outlet Marca, and entertainment site Showbiz Cheat Sheet.

Kate decided to wear for that event a long-sleeved red gown decorated with sequins by one of her favourite designers, Jenny Packham. The tiara was a favourite of Princess Margaret, the adored sister of late Queen Elizabeth II.

The princess received it from the late Queen Mother, who had it crafted in the early 1920s from a diamond and pearl necklace which she had received as a wedding present.

Six biggest bombshells from Thomas Markle as he issues desperate plea to Meghan Markle

Thomas Markle Snr has been estranged form his daughter Meghan Markle for the last six years and he’s now issued her a desperate plea to end the bitter feud

Thomas Markle Snr has pleaded with Meghan Markle to end their feud and give him the chance to meet his grandchildren.

The pair have been estranged for six years following a massive fallout before Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry. Thomas was caught staging paparazzi photos before the big day, leaving Meghan devastated.

As Thomas is getting ready to celebrate his 80th birthday next month, he’s now sat down for a new interview and opened up about his relationship with his daughter. Here, we’ve taken a look at some of the biggest bombshells from the chat.

Thomas will be celebrating his 80th birthday on July 18, but admitted he doesn’t expect to hear from Meghan. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he’s now begged his daughter to end their feud in time for his special day.

If the pair can’t put aside their differences, Thomas said he would like to finally meet Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, or at the very least have a picture of them. He said: “I’ve never been one for birthdays, but I know the one person I most want to hear from, Meghan, won’t be in touch.”

Thomas has never met his grandchildren as they were both born after his fallout with Meghan. The Duchess of Sussex gave birth to Archie on May 6 2019, before welcoming Lilibet on June 4 2021.

    Archie and Lilibet sadness

Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet haven’t met their grandfather
Archie and Lilibet have made very few trips to the UK and don’t have a close relationship with members of the Royal Family. Thomas said he finds it “very said” that the youngsters are “being denied the right to know their cousins”.

He said they should be given the chance to develop that “special” bond. He also said Archie and Lilibet should be given the opportunity to take part in Royal events such as Trooping the Colour, something he described as their “birth right”.

Thomas also warned the youngsters will soon start asking Meghan and Harry questions about their family. He explained: “It’s inevitable that they will ask their parents why they have cut them off from both sides of the family?”

    King Charles request

Thomas said he feels as though he is “in the same boat” as King Charles, who is also estranged from the Sussexes. Meghan’s father expressed his “deep empathy” for the monarch as he said he would “love to speak to him”.

Thomas suggested Charles might have the same “unanswered questions” he does and said neither of them “deserves the treatment we’ve received”. The former film producer pointed out how the King is currently undergoing cancer treatment, which would be the perfect opportunity for a reunion.

In the interview, Thomas also admitted he didn’t expect to make it to 80 years old as he confessed “Markle men never do”. His own father, Gordon Markle, died aged 61.

Gordon worked as a printer at Olmsted Air Force Base outside the family’s hometown of Newport, Pennsylvania, while his mother Doris Markle ran the sweet counter at a budget store.

Despite not expecting to reach 80, Thomas admitted he isn’t afraid of dying. In a defiant statement, he told the Daily Mail: “It is what it is.”

With the drama surrounding Thomas in the build-up to Harry and Meghan’s wedding, the Duke of Sussex didn’t get to meet his father-in-law. The pair have remained estranged in the years since.

Thomas admitted he found it strange that Harry never offered to meet with him before marrying Meghan. He pointed out how the Duke had the “resources to fly around the world”, but didn’t fly to America to see Thomas.

Meghan has grown estranged from her father over the years and the last time they spoke was when he was in a hospital bed before her wedding. The pair stopped speaking after Thomas was caught staging paparazzi photos before Meghan and Harry’s wedding in 2018.

Thomas has opened up about the incident and admitted he made a “mistake”, but has since apologised “repeatedly”. Thomas explained: “Meghan was mad at me because I posed for some paparazzi pictures before the wedding. I was totally alone and being hounded.”

The former photography director shared that his only wish for his upcoming birthday is to hear from Meghan, though he knows she “won’t be in touch.”

“I wish we could have worked this situation out. I was always ready and willing to do that,” he claimed despite publicly bashing the Sussexes over the years.

Since relocating to her native California, Meghan and Harry have remained close with her mother, Doria Ragland, but steered clear of seeing or talking to her father, who has never met his royal son-in-law.

The couple also has had limited contact with the prince’s family, whom they felt did not support their relationship.

Meghan and Harry infamously aired their grievances in a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, and he shared further details about his family feud in his 2023 memoir, Spare.

Since then, the Invictus Games founder has seen his dad, Charles, and estranged brother, Prince William, only a handful of times during brief trips home to London.
