A major advantage could be handed to the Three Lions as they look to win their first European Championship.

And the Spanish FA have been embroiled in a bitter dispute with Athletic Bilbao president Jon Uriarte, who has slammed the national team over the treatment of star man Nico Williams.

Uriarte is furious at what he perceives to be a lack of protection for Williams, who has been the subject of intense transfer speculation following his performances at Euro 2024.

He’s shone in Germany, attracting interest from the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona.

The Bilbao chief isn’t happy with the questions over his future during media appearances at the tournament.

He took aim at the Spanish FA in a strongly-worded statement.

“Nico, a player who is committed to Athletic, has been subjected to a bombardment of questions about his future in an excessive and uncontrolled manner while at the European Championships,” he said.

“The RFEF have not been able to protect him. Respect between all the actors who make up football is a fundamental basis, or that’s how we view it at Athletic, which does not include subjecting players with contracts at one club to public pressure to join other clubs.

“There are no limits to Athletic’s aspirations. We are demonstrating that we have an attractive project, a winning project for our players and our coach. The proof of that is that we have renewed the contracts of two of our internationals, Unai Simón (2029) and Dani Vivian (2032).

“Nico signed a new deal last year until 2027. Various other sought-after players have also committed their future to the club. Athletic are financially, socially and in sporting terms capable of keeping players of the caliber of those named in its structure, including Nico.”

The Spanish FA, however, refuted Uriarte’s claim as they released a statement of their own.

A statement read: “RFEF has treated Nico Williams in the same way we have treated the other 25 players who travelled to Germany. The impact that any of his words might have had is totally related to his performances and the great level he’s shown, and not to RFEF treating him differently.”

Williams, 22, has a release clause of £49 million and is contracted at Bilbao until 2027, having signed a new deal at the end of last year.

The retired footballer, 49, and Posh Spice’s marriage is examined in Tom Bower’s upcoming book The House of Beckham, with a number of new details about their decades-long romance revealed.

Another low-point for the Beckhams mentioned in the book came about in 2017, when Victoria’s gate-crashed David’s fun at Glastonbury. David and a small group of pals, including his best friend Dave Gardner, had gone to the famous British festival without Victoria at first as she was arriving later from New York.

The night before Posh’s arrival the group – including married Lady Mary Charteris, as well as a “glamorous Australian bikini model” – had partied until 5am. The festivities resumed at lunchtime the next day “until interrupted by a telephone call” informing them that Victoria had arrived.

“There was no hassle and a great mood until she landed,’ complained one of the group,” Bower writes in The House of Beckham. “With her entourage she headed in a golf buggy through the scruffy campers to the VIP zone. She was furious that her husband had failed to reply to her telephone calls and had dispatched a search party. Eventually, David appeared. Within seconds, they were embroiled in a ferocious argument…. ‘They looked quite miserable,’ said one eyewitness, ‘but they managed to pose for the cameras’.”

Bower goes on write about David’s relationship with his long-time BFF Dave Gardner, someone Victoria apparently wasn’t too keen on being her husband’s drinking buddy.

He claims in the book: “Insiders knew about Victoria’s opinion of Dave Gardner and his racy lifestyle. ‘Dreggy,’ she called his party crowd. In 2003, she had been particularly unhappy about Beckham being best man at Gardner’s £2 million first wedding to the soap actress and socialite Davinia Taylor.

“His presence, she complained, increased the financial value of Gardner’s contract with OK! magazine. Two years after the wedding, Victoria was irritated by the publicity surrounding Gardner’s ‘crisis talks to save his marriage’. His wife had become notorious for lesbian affairs with her Primrose Hill neighbours and treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction at The Priory.

“Their separation and eventual divorce increased the time Gardner and Beckham spent together, especially after Beckham stopped playing professional football. Without the demands of a strict training routine, Gardner had helped fill the vacuum by introducing him to glittering parties.”

“Obviously if you’re genuinely too ill to work, your boss must take your word on this. However, if you had one too many drinks and there’s evidence of this on social media too, depending on your work’s policy, this could be enough evidence to be considered a ‘non-genuine sick day’.

“This could potentially lead to a dismissal, as it amounts to a breach of the implied term of ‘mutual trust and confidence’ that is the foundation of an employment relationship.”

He added: “As long as you follow the dedicated sick leave policy in your workplace, it’s very difficult for a business to sack you, even if you call in sick following a sporting event like the Euros.

“So if you are genuinely ill, and need to take time off work to recover, make sure to do this as much in advance as you can, and check to see whether your workplace requires a doctor’s note, or return to work assessment.

“However, businesses will be well aware that some of these absences might be hangover-related. If your colleagues have access to your social media and see you cheering on the match, they might raise suspicions about the integrity of your sick leave, and you could face disciplinary action, as this would be considered a conduct issue.”
