JEFF POWELL’S SCORECARD: Oleksandr Usyk did enough to get the judges’ verdict to beat Tyson Fury, but Mail Sport’s boxing expert had a different result… how did he score the fight?

Oleksandr Usyk defied the odds to beat Tyson Fury via split decision to seal his place as the best heavyweight on the planet in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night.

Despite Usyk scoring a heavy knockdown in round nine, one judge still gave the bout in favour of Fury by a single point, 114-113.

But he was overruled by his fellow judges, who edged towards Usyk 115-112 and 114-113.

The Ukrainian is the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 2000, but did he deserve the victory?

Fury didn’t think so, and Mail Sport’s boxing expert Jeff Powell also had a different result, so how did he score the contest?

Round 5 – Fury checked out Usyk’s alleged weakness in the body and was warned for one low blow as Usyk complained. But the Ukrainian’s biggest problem was a cut by the right eye, which may have been caused by a clash of heads in the preceding round.

Round 7 – Half way and Usyk yet to win a round. He needed one now not to be beyond recovery on points and stole this one with powerful finish after catching Fury play-acting.

Drake loses $565,000 after betting on Tyson Fury to beat Oleksandr Usyk as rapper’s gambling ‘curse’ strikes again

Drake suffered another big-money gambling loss on Saturday night after the rapper bet $565,000 on Tyson Fury to beat Oleksandr Usyk.

The Ukrainian beat Fury by split decision in Saudi Arabia to become the first undisputed heavyweight boxing champion in 24 years.

Usyk added Fury’s WBC title to his own WBA, IBF and WBO belts with a spectacular late rally highlighted by a ninth-round knockdown in a back-and-forth bout between two previously unbeaten heavyweight champs.

But it was bad news for Drake, who earlier on Saturday took to Instagram to show he had gambled $565,000 on Fury to prevail. If Fury had won, Drake would have collected just over $1million.

Fans on social media regularly joke that Drake is ‘cursed’ having previously lost a six-figure sum after Anthony Joshua‘s knockout win over Francis Ngannou, and another $700,000 after Dricus Du Plessis beat Sean Strickland at UFC 297.

He also lost $550,000 when Israel Adesanya suffered a shock defeat against Strickland in the octagon and previously bet $890,000 on Logan Paul to beat Dillon Danis in the boxing ring.

Many thought the curse had been broken when Drake bet $1m on Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup final against France.

Although Lionel Messi and Co did prevail in Qatar they won on penalties, which meant Drake’s bet for them to win inside 90 minutes lost.

Drake has found success gambling on the Super Bowl though and picked up wins in basketball, baseball and hockey.

But his luck was out on Saturday night as two judges favored Usyk, 115-112 and 114-113, while the third gave it to Fury, 114-113.

Fury and Usyk are expected to enter the ring around 11pm UK time / 1am in Saudi Arabia

Usyk started quickly, but then had to survive while the confident, charismatic Fury dominated the middle rounds.

Usyk surged in the final rounds, just as the Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist has done so many times in his career, taking control with a dominant eighth and nearly stopping Fury in the ninth.

Usyk hurt Fury with a left hand and eventually sent him sprawling into a corner in the final seconds of the round, getting credit for a knockdown right before Fury was saved by the bell.

Fury struggled to mount a consistent attack after nearly getting stopped, and the knockdown turned out to be the decisive factor in the decision.

‘Thank you so much to my team,’ Usyk said while fighting back tears in the ring. ‘It´s a big opportunity for me, for my family, for my country. Slava Ukraini!’

Revealed: Oleksandr Usyk’s punch stats against Tyson Fury show he was the RIGHT winner despite throwing nearly 100 punches less… as the Ukranian bested the Gypsy King in several key areas

Oleksandr Usyk was crowned the new undisputed heavyweight champion of the world after he claimed a split-decision victory against Tyson Fury in Saudi Arabia.

In what was a historic night for the sport, the pair finally collided in a huge battle that certainly lived up to the billing, with the punching stats showing that perhaps Uysk was the right winner, besting the Gypsy King in several key areas.

Usyk became the first fighter in the four-belt era to unite the belts – and is the first to be crowned undisputed heavyweight champion in 25 years – after two judges scored 115-112 and 114-113 in his favour, while the third judge scored it 114-113 to Fury.

Both fighters came out on the offensive early on, with each landing some jaw-dropping blows and it seemed Fury had taken the advantage, setting the pace in the opening rounds.

Usyk appeared to land a huge blow on the British fighter’s nose in the opening rounds, which caused problems for Fury later during the bout. Midway through the fight, Usyk seemed to target his opponent’s nose and after a couple more strikes, blood began to pour from Fury’s face.

Usyk vs Fury: Important for Oleksandr to fight for Ukraine on land

The Ukrainian would go on the offensive late on, causing his opponent to stagger before knocking him down, after landing a flurry of brutal blows to the Gypsy King’s head.

The punching stats from the fight have now been revealed, with TNT Sports Box Office stating that Fury had thrown 85 more punches than Usyk.

While the Brit threw 567 punches, Usyk threw 482 but was far more accurate with the number of strikes he connected.

Usyk would land 185 punches to Fury’s 135 while the pair would both connect 95 shots each to their opponent’s head.

It means Usyk’s punching accuracy sat at around 39 per cent, while Fury’s came in at 24 per cent.

Fury, who had fired some crunching shots into his opponent’s midriff, meanwhile landed 39 punches to Usyk’s body, but conversely, the Ukrainian landed 89.

Both men were left battered and bruised after the fight, with the Brit claiming, per ESPN, during his press conference that Oleksandr Usyk had gone to hospital with a broken jaw.

Palace staff ‘bent over backwards’ for Meghan Markle but she squandered it all, blasts royal expert

PALACE staff ”bent over backwards” for the Duchess of Sussex, but she squandered it all, an expert has claimed.

When Meghan Markle, 42, first started dating Prince Harry in 2016 , everyone was desperate to make it work, according to Simon Vigar, the royal correspondent for Channel 5 and ITN.

Vigar, one of the longest-serving correspondents on British TV, told The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show that during her journey, ”people within the Palaces were helping” and they ”bent over backwards” for the duchess.

”The idea that people never wanted it to work – I find it completely bizarre.”

At the beginning, the overall atmosphere was ”supportive”, as everyone within and around the family wanted to see Prince Harry ”happy”.

”We knew that he was seriously worried that he would never find someone after the previous relationships which had ended,” added Simon, who’s been in the industry for 16 years working for Channel 5.

According to the expert, the issue wasn’t finding a girlfriend who ”didn’t like Harry” – it was finding a partner ”who would put up” with everything that came with dating a Prince.

    ”I think people were delighted.”

The media coverage, too, Simon said was ”very positive”, with the odd ”weird” headline here and there – which is a stark contrast to what the Royal duo have since made it out to be, he pointed out.

”Covering events, her first walkabouts in the winter of 2018 before the wedding – you could see that the demographic had changed.

”That the people who had turned out to see Harry and Meghan – there was a clear transformation […], which was great.

    ”It was reflecting modern Britain.”

Prince William returns to public engagements for the first time since the Princess of Wales revealed she was being treated for cancer
All of that, however, has since been brutally ”squandered”, with Meghan and Harry stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family in 2020.

    ”It’s a great shame.”

Why did Meghan Markle and Prince Harry step down as senior royals?

In a statement made on the Sussexes’ Instagram account, the couple wrote: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.

“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.

“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.

“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.

“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.

“We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties.

”Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.”

Oleksandr Usyk sent to HOSPITAL with a broken jaw after beating Tyson Fury… as new undisputed heavyweight champion misses the post-fight press conference

Oleksandr Usyk was rushed to hospital in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night with Tyson Fury claiming he broke the Ukrainian’s jaw.

Usyk gained a split decision victory to hand the Gypsy King the first loss of his career, and he nearly knocked out the now-former WBC heavyweight champion with a brutal onslaught in the ninth round.

However, it was the Brit who seemingly inflicted the greater damage as Usyk was forced to miss the post-fight press conference to have his injuries attended to.

Speaking after the fight, Fury said: ‘We just had a fight. Have you seen my face? It’s pretty busted up and he’s just gone to the hospital with a broken jaw and he’s busted too. We’ve punched the f*** out of each other for 12 rounds there.

‘So we’re going to go home, eat some food, drink a few beers, spend some family time, walk my dog, go to the tip and me and Frank will talk about what will happen in the future.’

Usyk was hurt with a big body shot by Fury in round six, but it’s unclear where the damage to the jaw was done.

Fury does have a legally-binding rematch – as his promoter Frank Warren keenly reminded everyone after the fight – and the 35-year-old suggested that will be his next move after the loss.

Usyk’s suspected broken jaw will certainly complicate matters. Turki Alalshikh had previously stated he wanted to see the rematch before the end of 2024 so Anthony Joshua could face the winner in the first quarter of 2025.

By the time the rematch takes place, Usyk might not even be undisputed champion.

The IBF is expected to issue a mandatory challenger for the belts. Should Usyk opt not to face them – widely expected to be Daniel Dubois and Filip Hrgovic – he will vacate that belt.

KSI rages at ‘deluded’ Tyson Fury and brands him a ‘T***’ after the Gypsy King claimed Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk was awarded split decision in world heavyweight title fight ‘because his country is at war’

KSI has branded Tyson Fury ‘deluded’ and a ‘t***’ for claiming that Oleksandr Usyk was handed victory in their title fight because his country, Ukraine, is at war with Russia.

Usyk was awarded the victory by split decision with scores of 115-112, 113-114, and 114-113 to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era.

Fury was respectful in defeat but believed he was the rightful winner and argued that ‘people are siding with the country at war’.

Usyk had the better of the opening skirmishes before Fury dominated the middle rounds, but the Ukrainian’s endurance prevailed and he took the latter stages, with a 10-8 score in round nine.

KSI’s profile in sport is increasing with the growth of his Misfits Boxing promotion which he founded in 2022.

Fury, who is expected to pocket north of £100m for his role in an era-defining clash in Saudi Arabia, was adamant he had won in the immediate aftermath of the bout.

‘I believe I won that fight,’ he said to DAZN. ‘And I believe he won a few of the rounds, but I won the majority of them.’

He added: ‘I believe we both put on a good fight – best we could do. And, you know, his country is at war. People are siding with the country at war.

‘Make no mistake, I won that fight in my opinion.’

On another night, perhaps Usyk could have been hailed as the winner. TNT Sports’ pundit Richie Woodhall scored the fight 114-114 as it had been so competitive.

It was a monumental night for the heavyweight division, with Usyk being crowned the first undisputed champion of the four-belt era, and the first since Lennox Lewis beat Evander Holyfield in 1999.

After the slugfest in Saudi, both fighters showed respect to each other with Fury seen putting his arms around Usyk’s shoulders inside the ring.

‘Good work Oleksandr. You’re a strong man and a very good boxer. Very good, my brother. In Christ,’ Fury began as he held Usyk’s head in his hands.

Usyk replied: ‘Listen, I started preparing for you when you were boxing in 2008, European champion,’ likely referencing Fury’s EU Junior Championship of 2007.

Fury said: ‘Thank you my brother, you’re a very good boxer. I love it, I love it, good moves.’

Usyk said: ‘I’m very proud. We’re a friendly… family. My son said: “Hey, Tyson push you…”

Some snippets of their conversation are difficult to make out due to the din of the crowd and the throng surrounding them in the ring.

The Gypsy King made a promise to the newly crowned undisputed heavyweight champion, the first since Lennox Lewis, who retired in 2004.

While Usyk had the upper hand in the opening rounds, pinning a showboating Gypsy King in the corner, Fury came back in the mid-section of the fight with a series of punishing body blows and upper cuts.

However, Usyk looked fresher in the latter stages of the fight and a devastating hit in the ninth round left Fury wobbling around and almost being counted out as he tried to stay on his feet.

Fans claim John Fury is ‘nowhere to be seen’ following Tyson Fury’s loss to Oleksandr Usyk… after his chaotic role in the build-up to the heavyweight world title fight in Saudi Arabia

Fans have claimed John Fury is ‘nowhere to be seen’ after Oleksandr Usyk beat his son Tyson to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world in Saudi Arabia.

Usyk was announced as the winner on a split decision verdict on Saturday night following the 12-round contest in Riyadh.

The judges scored the bout 115-112 Usyk, 114-113 Fury and 114-113 Usyk, as the 37-year-old secured all four heavyweight belts.

Boxing fans have been quick to highlight John Fury’s role in the Gypsy King’s camp following the first defeat of his professional career.

Some claimed Fury’s father had been a hindrance to him during the fight, rather than a help as he sought to overcome Usyk.

Some fans claimed John Fury distracted from  tactical advice being offered by his coach Andy Lee and trainer SugarHill Steward

Fans suggested that his presence distracted from tactical advice being offered by his coach Andy Lee and trainer SugarHill Steward, costing his son the fight.

One fan wrote: ‘Fury’s corner consisted of 2 incredibly intelligent boxing people in Sugar Hill and Andy Lee trying to impart some astute tactical game plan, only to be repeatedly drowned out by John Fury shouting “Use the jab, we’re fighting men”…’

‘John Fury shouldn’t be anywhere near this, constantly over talking 2 guys who actually know what they are talking about,’ another added.

‘One thing is certain though, Tyson Fury needs to keep John Fury out of the training camp, the build up and especially out of his corner for the next fight!

‘The man is a huge hindrance and distraction to the team as a whole,’ claimed a third.

A clip had showed Steward offering Fury advice ahead of the final two rounds of the fight, saying ‘Don’t cross your god damn legs, be ready to punch, before adding ‘Don’t be afraid to slide in, quit pulling back or you’ll get caught’.

John Fury could also be heard offering advice to his son, repeatedly saying ‘light punches, light punches.

He was also heard talking over Steward telling Fury to ‘box and move’, while Fury was told by his corner that he was winning the fight.

A fan claimed John Fury’s comments contradicted Steward’s tactical advice, potentially adding confusion for Tyson Fury ahead of the final rounds.

‘John Fury was basically contradicting what Sugar Hull was saying in the corner telling Fury to box and move and throw light punches after Hill told him to take the fight to Usyk and throw power shots,’ on fan wrote.

‘Embarrassing corner sideshow. That’s not how you win big fights.’

Another commented ‘Steward needed t kick John Fury out of the corner, too many cooks and all that… John Fury isn’t even a decent cook. Embarrassing.’

Despite being told he was winning the fight heading into the final two rounds, Fury ultimately ended up on the wrong side of the judges’ verdict.

Usyk was awarded the 11th round by the two judges who ultimately awarded him the contest, but Fury was awarded the final round on each of their scorecards.

As well as being a vocal presence in Tyson’s corner during the fight, John Fury also caused controversy in the build-up to the undisputed world heavyweight title showdown.

The 59-year-old headbutted a young member of Usyk’s camp in the Riyadh Hilton Hotel lobby on Tuesday, coming away with a bloodied face.

Boxing fans had called for Fury Snr to be disciplined severely for the headbutt on a member of the Ukrainian’s entourage.

Some fans highlighted that while John Fury had been visible in the build-up, his presence appeared to have dimmed since Tyson was beaten by Usyk.

‘John Fury is very quiet this morning,’ one fan claimed.

‘Not seen a thing of big John fury since the verdict where is he,’ added another, while a third said ‘Usyk is a machine…. Fully deserved that win. John Fury no where to be seen… funny that.’

  • Does Harry and Meghan’s son Archie have a royal title?

Does Harry and Meghan’s son Archie have a royal title?

IT can be confusing which members of the royal family are entitles to titles are who are not.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had a say in their son Archie’s royal title.

    What is Archie’s official title?

When Archie was born in 2019, it was reported that Meghan and Harry chose not to use a courtesy title for their new boy.

Instead, he was simply known as Master Archie after his parents decided not to give him one of the Duke of Sussex’s lesser titles, the Earl of Dumbarton.

This signalled the couple wanted their child to be a “private citizen” and not have an official royal title.

However, the Duchess of Sussex revealed to Oprah Winfrey in March 2021 that she was upset over a lack of title for Archie.

She alleged that Buckingham Palace actively tried to alter the rules so that when Charles becomes king, that Archie isn’t made a prince.

However, after the passing of Queen Elizabeth on September 8, 2022, her son Charles succeeded the throne and became the new reigning monarch of the country – meaning Archie would be granted a new royal title.

His Majesty agreed to issue letters patent to confer Archie will receive the title of prince in the future, alongside his sister Lilibet who will receive the title of princess.

However,  Meghan and Harry’s baby boy will not be called His Royal Highness – thanks to his great-great-grandparent.

King George V introduced a rule in 1917 which means their baby would need special permission from the King to receive HRH status.

Only the eldest son of the Queen’s first born, King  Charles, is entitled to be a HRH – no younger sons or daughters.

But this decision reportedly left Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ”furious” and concerned over security issues.

A source said: “Harry and Meghan were worried about the security issue and being prince and princess brings them the right to have certain levels of royal security.

“There have been a lot of talks over the past week.

“They have been insistent that Archie and Lilibet are prince and princess.

“They have been relentless since the Queen died.

“But they have been left furious that Archie and Lilibet cannot take the title HRH.

“That is the agreement — they can be prince and princess but not HRH because they are not working royals.”

Becoming a prince or princess does not automatically mean royals have police protection.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s security – for example – is no longer paid for by the taxpayer.

The Sussexes are said to have pointed out that princesses Beatrice and Eugenie have HRH status but they are not working royals.

A spokesman for the King declined to comment.

Harry and Meghan agreed not to use their His and Her Royal Highness titles when they moved to the United States,  two and a half years ago.

Despite Royal protocol, in December 2012, before Prince William and Kate Middleton had their first born Prince George, the Queen used the Letters Patent so she could give all of their children an HRH title.

This is because George is in line for the throne, and the Queen had to intervene to also give the title to Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The Letters Patent is a method that allows the sovereign to give orders without involving Parliament.

Archie is seventh in line to the throne, behind his dad.

He will remain ahead of any other children Harry and Meghan have in the future, again regardless of gender.

Their son is the Queen’s eighth great-grandchild.

    When was Archie born?

Meghan gave birth to a healthy boy, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, at 5.26am on May 6, 2019.

Meghan and Harry beamed as they introduced their “amazing” baby boy to the world.

The new parents appeared tired but ecstatic as they cradled their infant, with giddy bearded dad Harry joking his son “already has facial hair”.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s low-key announcement at Windsor Castle was in stark contrast to Kate Middleton and Prince William’s post-birth experiences, which saw hundreds of photographers snapping pictures of their three children hours after they were born.

And the Sussexes kept Archie swaddled in a white blanket and hat as they described their little boy.

New mum Meghan, then aged 37, stunned in a white dress as she stood by grinning new dad Prince Harry, then aged 34, who cradled their little boy.

She gushed over her little boy, saying: “It’s magic.

“It’s pretty amazing. I have the best two guys in the world, so I’m really happy.”

And she said that the infant already had the “sweetest temperament” – adding “he’s the dream”.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released their baby son’s birth certificate, showing that Meghan was listed as a “princess”.

Archie’s birth was registered on Friday, May 17, 2019, revealing the couple had their baby at London’s Portland Hospital, a private hospital favoured by celebrities wanting a money-no-object birthing experience.

Tyson Fury questions coaching team and father John Fury’s advice after his corner ‘believed he was up’ before losing world heavyweight title fight to Oleksandr Usyk

Tyson Fury has questioned the advice offered by team in the final rounds in his world heavyweight title fight against Oleksandr Usyk.

The Gypsy King suffered a split decision defeat to the Ukrainian on Saturday night in Saudi Arabia.

Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight world champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999, while Fury was left to reflect on the first defeat of his professional career.

The judges scored the bout 115-112 Usyk, 114-113 Fury and 114-113 Usyk, as the 37-year-old secured all four heavyweight belts.

Fury appeared to express frustration at his team after the fighter, revealing he had been told he was winning the fight ahead of the final round of the contest.

The 35-year-old claimed he would have changed his approach had he been advised by his trainer SugarHill Steward or his father John that he was trailing Usyk in the latter stages in Riyadh.

‘I’m not a judge and I can’t judge a fight while I’m boxing it,’ Fury said.

‘If they’d said to me before the last round that I was down I would have gone and tried to finish it but everyone in the corner believed we were up.

‘All I had to do was just keep boxing and keep doing what I was doing and I was getting it.

‘I’m not going to cry about it, I’ve had plenty of victories.

‘I was having a lot of fun, I was playing around, I had my hands around my back, I was enjoying it.’

Fans have also claimed multiple voices in Fury’s corner during the fight may have contributed to his defeat, with Steward and John Fury offering different advice.

A clip had showed Steward offering Fury advice ahead of the final two rounds of the fight.

Fury’s trainer could be heard saying ‘Don’t cross your god damn legs, be ready to punch, before adding ‘Don’t be afraid to slide in, quit pulling back or you’ll get caught’.

While Steward was urging Fury to go on the offensive, John Fury could also be heard offering advice to his son, repeatedly saying ‘light punches, light punches.

Fury was told by his team with two rounds remaining of the contest that he was winning the fight.

The judges on the night scored the bout 115-112 Usyk, 114-113 Fury and 114-113 Usyk to see the Ukrainian win via split-decision.

Fury dominated the opening rounds before Usyk came back to control the fight with a flurry of punches in the ninth round leaving the Gypsy King floundering.

After the final round, there was mutual respect between the two fighters who exchanged kisses and hugs as they awaited the result.

But Fury’s mood soured when Usyk was named the victor with the UK fighter telling an interviewer that ‘people are siding with Usyk because of the Ukraine war’.

Fury suggested he will take time to decide whether he will activate the rematch clause

Fury initially insisted he will activate the clause to ensure a rematch takes place in October, but later suggested he would take time to decide.

‘We’ve punched f**k out of each other for 12 rounds there, so we’re going to go home, eat some food, drink a few beers, spend some family time, walk my dog, go to the tip and me and Frank are going to talk about what’s going to happen in the future,’ Fury said at a press conference.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I think I’d just do a little bit more of the same, keep my defence a little bit tighter, a bit more focused, and not so much messing around because I was having fun in there.

‘I was playing around, I was hitting him to the body, uppercuts to the head and I thought I was bossing the fight.’
