Christmas card signed by King Charles and Diana from the 80s is listed on eBay for £2,000

Christmas card signed by King Charles III and Princess Diana is being sold on eBay – and it could be yours for £2,000.

The listing for the ‘rare’ royal find, from 1985, features a photo of the couple with their children, Princes William and Harry – then three and one years old.

The sweet family portrait shows their eldest son lifting his little brother up and grinning for the camera – as they sit on a Shetland Pony together.

It reads: ‘To you both, from Charles and Diana.’ There is a family portrait of the royal couple with the Princes William and Harry as youngsters.

The special artefact is all the more rare given royals have for a long time not been allowed to sign autographs due to risk of forgery.

There are only a handful of exceptions, such as visitors’ books or official documents.

The card was once auctioned by RR Auction in 2022 and is now available to purchase on eBay being sold by its current owner, who is based in the US.

It is currently listed for US $2,949.95, or approximately£2,337.89.

‘This is a rare and unique item for any collector or fan of King Charles III, Princess Diana, The United Kingdom and The British Royal Family,’ the site says.

‘The 1985 Holiday Card features a signature from Princess Diana and King Charles III and comes with a certificate of authenticity from RR Auction.

‘The Westminster Collection Ltd & also has been authenticated by Professional Sports Authentication.

‘The card showcases a beautiful design and is in excellent condition, perfect for display or as a special addition to any collection.

‘The historical significance of this item cannot be overstated, and it is a must-have for any serious collector.

‘Don’t miss out on this opportunity to own a piece of history.’

It comes as last month, Queen Elizabeth II‘s former housemaid was selling her collection of Christmas cards sent to her from the late monarch to help pay for her care in old age.

June Guerin, now 87,  joined the royal household in the early 1970s after answering an advert in The Lady magazine.

She served the Queen and Prince Philip for 22 years and became a senior housemaid at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen was said to be fond of June and she travelled with her and the Duke of Edinburgh, serving at Sandringham, Windsor Castle, Balmoral and on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

She used to regale her family with the story of how she once danced the Gay Gordon Scottish country dance with Prince Philip at a party.

June retired in the mid-1990s and used to live in an apartment on the royal estate at Windsor.

Now suffering from dementia and aged 87, June’s family were selling her royal Christmas cards to help pay for her care.

There were 24 cards in total dating from 1987 to 2018, with some years missing.

Also going under the hammer in October were two personal handwritten cards from Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York.

Mimi Connel Lay, of Lay’s Auctioneers of Penzance, Cornwall, said: ‘June’s collection of Christmas cards are a testament to her devotion to the Royal family.

‘Even though she retired from service in the mid-1990s, she still received a Christmas card from the Queen and Prince Philip up until the Queen’s death.

‘It is rare for a phenomenal and personal collection such as this to come onto the market. June now has dementia and is in a care home and her family have made the difficult decision to sell these treasured items to help with her care.

‘Some of the Christmas cards are great from an historic perspective, showing Harry right in the centre and bosom of his family, which is rather poignant given the current rift.’

The card for Christmas 1987 carries a photograph of the Queen and Prince Philip and their four grandchildren at the time, Peter, Zara, William and Harry.

June is originally from Guernsey and never had children.

In recent years she has lived in Cornwall, near her great niece, Michaell Dunne, who is selling the collection.

Mrs Dunne, 45, said: ‘She was very loyal to the Queen who I think cared for the people who were around her every day.

‘Auntie June was always very descreet when it came to the royal family and never gossiped.

‘She did say that her duties included preparing the Queen’s bedroom for bedtime or going in to open the curtains in the morning.

‘June’s favourite story was a New Year’s Eve party where the staff were invited to and she danced the Gay Gordons with Prince Philip, that was her claim to fame.

‘June has lived in a care home in Cornwall for the past six years and has advancing vascular dementia these days. She forgets that the Queen and Prince Philip have passed away and gets upset if reminded.

‘We’d love for June’s collection of cards to be treasured by future generations of people who love the royal family the same way that she does.’

The Diana interview that enthralled the nation and broke Prince William’s heart: On this day in 1995 Martin Bashir used deceit to get the scandal-ridden royal scoop – but it is now regarded as the BBC’s ultimate betrayal by the future king

When it comes to famous royal interviews, two stand out in particular.

The most recent of which was in 2019 when Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis grilled Prince Andrew about his friendship with the paedophile sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein – leading to his effective sacking from the Royal Family.

However, the original blockbuster interview was Princess Diana‘s sit-down with BBC Panorama’s Martin Bashir which aired on this day in November 1995.

It was watched by 20million people and became notorious when Diana spilled the secrets of her and Charles’s messy marriage, including the iconic line ‘there were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded’.

But in 2021, an investigation into the interview found Bashir had used ‘deceitful behaviour’ by falsifying documents to convince Diana to take part in the interview.

The findings prompted Prince William to make an unprecedented statement saying it should never be aired again after it had created a ‘false narrative for over a quarter of a century’.

Here, MailOnline looks back at the scandal-ridden royal interview.

In the early 1990s, the disintegration of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’s marriage was splashed across every newspaper in Britain – dubbed ‘The War of the Waleses’.

But things escalated in 1994 when Charles gave Jonathan Dimbleby an interview in which he acknowledged his relationship with Camilla.

‘Is it true,’ William had poignantly asked Diana after the revelatory broadcast, ‘that Daddy never loved you?’

That interview has been seen as one justification for Diana’s bizarre broadcast the following year when she was determined to get her side of the story out.

However, her decision to do the tell-all interview with Bashir, would only come about through deceit.

At the time it was hailed as the scoop of a generation, however Bashir had spun a web of deceit to trick Diana and her brother, Earl Spencer, with preposterous smears about senior royals to gain her trust.

He used forged bank statements and lied that MI6 had recorded Prince Charles planning the ‘end game’, and that Prince William’s watch had been bugged, all designed to draw the vulnerable princess into his confidence.

The only other royal interview to become as notorious as Diana's 1995 sit-down with Bashir was in 2019, when Emily Maitlis grilled Prince Andrew about his friendship with the paedophile sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein

However despite allegations at the time, Bashir managed to dismiss claims he had lied to get the interview by claiming it was a smear campaign to get him.

The allegations were covered up by the BBC for 25 years, with the truth only coming out following an official investigation led by a retired judge Lord Dyson in 2021.

But the interview would leave a lasting scar on the young Prince William.

The 13-year-old boy was ill-prepared for his mother to go on national television and say ‘Yes, I adored him. Yes, I was in love with him’ about her extramarital boyfriend.

The boyfriend in question was the dashing Captain James Hewitt, William and Harry’s riding instructor.

Royal expert Tina Brown was told Diana chose to speak about Hewitt because he was the only one of her ex-lovers who wasn’t married.

It was during this interview that the princess said ‘there were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded’ – a reference to Charles’s affair with his now wife, Queen Camilla.

She spoke of her early expectations of life with Prince Charles and how she had ‘desperately wanted it to work’ in light of her own parents’ divorce.

Diana also opened up about the health issues she’d silently faced, which included bulimia, post-partum depression and self-harm, leading to her being labelled by others as unstable and mentally unbalanced.

‘It was a symptom of what was going on in my marriage,’ Diana revealed on Panorama. ‘I was crying out for help, but giving the wrong signals.’

As well as admitting to her own extramarital affairs, Diana also suggested that Charles might not be cut out for the throne.

‘I would think that the top job, as I call it, would bring enormous limitations to him, and I don’t know whether he could adapt to that,’ she said of her ex-husband.

The 54-minute bombshell interview was the final nail in the Wales’ marriage, and less than a month later, divorce papers were filed upon the Queen’s advice.

Although the interview also had an extraordinary impact on William, the implication seemingly passed over the head of the younger Harry, who was then just 11 years old.

Diana’s cascade of confessions and barbed insults added up to a maliciously crafted attack on both her husband and his family — her children’s father and family.

Robert Lacy in his book Battle Of Brothers: William, Harry And The Inside Story Of A Family In Tumult, revealed how young William was impacted by the interview.

He wrote Diana did not initially consider how it would impact the boys, and according to Simone Simmons, the Princess’s confidante and faith-healer, it took a phone call from William’s Eton housemaster, Dr Andrew Gailey, to prompt Diana.

Gailey had read the advance publicity in the newspapers and phoned to tell her it was ‘imperative’ that she should come to explain things to William, face to face.

Bashir later claimed in an email there was 'irritation' that 'a second-generation immigrant of non-white working-class roots should have the temerity to enter a royal palace'

In another phone call from Gailey the next day, Simmons told Ingrid Seward the editor-in-chief of royal magazine Majesty, he effectively ordered Diana down the M4 motorway to talk to her son.

Diana had a brief encounter with William where she told him ‘I didn’t want it to catch you by surprise’.

Afterwards, she drove on to Ludgrove, Harry’s prep school half an hour away, to deliver the same message to him.

William went down to his housemaster’s study shortly before 8pm that Monday to sit alone and watch as Panorama’s revolving globe and percussive theme music made way for the close-up of his mother’s wide eyes as she fired off her broadside of embarrassing accusations.

Before the 58 minutes ended, William was weeping, according to Robert Lacey.

Gailey told Diana that he found her son slumped on the sofa, his eyes red with tears.

The Prince managed to pull himself together to rush back to his room — but when, an hour later, Diana telephoned on the house phone, he refused to take her call.

He felt a mixture of humiliation and fury that she had denigrated his father and had mentioned Hewitt.

‘He hated the idea of everything being on television,’ recalled Simmons, ‘and he knew his friends would poke fun at him, which they did.

‘He felt she made a fool of herself — and of him.’

William was in a fragile place and was still in his first weeks at Eton, which had a notorious bullying culture where prefects could pour a bucket of raw eggs and Worcestershire sauce over the heads of younger boys who made a mistake.

William later told a classmate that as soon as he saw his mother’s face appear on screen for the interview, he was overcome with dread.

The scars on William’s back from his parents’ poisonous crossfire as a schoolboy seemed to have stayed with him.

It wasn’t until 2021 when an official investigation led by a retired judge Lord Dyson, found that ‘Bashir seriously breached BBC rules by mocking up fake bank statements to gain access to the princess,’ via the BBC.

Prince William lays into BBC over Martin Bashir Panorama interview

Understandably aghast, Diana’s brother Earl Spencer was said to believe his vulnerable sister had been trapped in a web of lies by Bashir who had established ‘coercive control’ over her.

In his inquiry, Lord Dyson found that Bashir deceived Earl Spencer into introducing the journalist to his sister by showing him forged bank statements that falsely suggested individuals were being paid to keep the Princess under surveillance.

Prince William’s full statement following the Dyson Inquiry into the Bashir interview in 2021

‘I’d like to thank Lord Dyson and his team for the report. It is welcomed that the BBC accepts Lord Dyson’s findings in full, which are extremely concerning. That BBC employees lied and used fake documents to obtain the interview with my mother, made lurid and false claims about the royal family which played on her fears and fueled paranoia, displayed woeful incompetence when investigating complaints and concerns about the programme, and were evasive in their reporting to the media and covered up what they knew from their internal investigation.

‘It is my view that the deceitful way the interview was obtained substantially influenced what my mother said. The interview is a major contribution to making my parents’ relationship worse and has since hurt countless others.

‘It brings indescribable sadness to know that the BBC’s failures contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation that I remember from those final years with her. But what saddens me most is that if the BBC had properly investigated the complaints and concerns first raised in 1995, my mother would have known that she’d been deceived.

‘She was failed not just by a rogue reporter but by leaders of the BBC, who looked the other way rather than asking the tough questions.

‘It is my firm view that this Panorama programme holds no legitimacy and should never be aired again. It effectively established a false narrative which for over a quarter of a century has been commercialised by the BBC and others.

‘This settled narrative now needs to be addressed by the BBC and anyone else who has written or intends to write about these events. In an era of fake news, public service broadcasting and a free press have never been more important. These failings, identified by investigative journalists not only let my mother down and my family down, they let the public down too.’

Royal biographer Andrew Morton also said Bashir told Diana the security forces were planning to kill her. He said Bashir warned her: ‘They’re going to wipe you.’

It was also alleged that Diana was shown a ‘faked abortion receipt’, which suggested Charles had been romantically involved with one of the royal nannies.

The report slammed BBC bosses, including former director-general Tony Hall, for covering up information on how Bashir was able to secure the interview.

In his defence, Bashir claimed criticism of the interview was down to racism over his non-white status and ‘professional jealousy’.

The inquiry plunged the Corporation into one of the worst crises in its history, with Diana’s two sons William and Harry accusing it of ruining their mother’s life with its ‘deceitful’ interview and helping to bring about the tragic chain of events that led to her death two years later.

William issued a grave address on camera where he could not quite hide the fury that still haunted him.

He railed: ‘This Panorama programme holds no legitimacy and should never be aired again. It effectively established a false narrative which, for over a quarter of a century, has been commercialised by the BBC and others.’

‘Our mother was an incredible woman who dedicated her life to service. She was resilient, brave, and unquestionably honest.

Prince Harry added. ‘The ripple effect of a culture of exploitation and unethical practices ultimately took her life.’

Since then the BBC has promised to never show the interview again or license it to be used by another broadcaster.

But it continues to cast a long shadow over the princes.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were criticised for using elements of the interview in their explosive Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, which aired in November 2022.

Midway through the first episode of the series, clips are shown of Princess Diana speaking to the journalist.

Sources close to the Prince of Wales at the time said he would have been ‘furious’ that his brother appeared to ignore his plea that the Panorama interview never be aired again.

Before the clip is shown, Harry, speaking about his mother’s struggles with press intrusion, says: ‘I think she had a lived experience of how she was struggling living that life. She felt compelled to talk about it.

‘Especially in that Panorama interview. I think we all now know that she was deceived into giving the interview. But at the same time she spoke the truth of her experience.’

And in 2022 Netflix ignored pleas from Prince William not to exploit the interview during the fifth series of The Crown in a two-episode bombshell.

Both brothers received ‘unconditional apology’ letters from the BBC over Bashir’s conduct and the 25-year cover-up.

Mr Bashir apologised for the forged documents, stating ‘it was a stupid thing to do and was an action I deeply regret’, but insisted that ‘the bank statements had no bearing whatsoever on the personal choice by Princess Diana to take part in the interview’.

Royal expert Tina Brown wrote in her 2022 book The Palace Papers that Lord Dyson’s report unmasking Bashir’s trickery gave the two princes some rationale for why their mother did something so destructive to their happiness.

Gulu Lalvani, the wealthy, British, Pakistani businessman Diana briefly dated in the last year of her life, told Tina Brown that the Princess said in July 1997 she was pleased about the interview.

He said she didn’t have a bad word to say about Martin Bashir and realised it served her purpose.

It allowed her to frame herself to the British public as a betrayed woman, before the increasingly inevitable divorce from Charles.

Opinion polls in the wake of the interview showed support for the princess at 92 per cent. ‘She had the public in the palm of her hand’, writes Brown.

Despite Diana’s pragmatic reasons for doing the interview, her sons seem to have been unable to forgive the BBC for its behaviour over the Bashir saga.

How the BBC was finally forced to admit Bashir’s deceit

AUGUST 31, 1995: BBC Panorama journalist Martin Bashir meets Earl Spencer and shows him fake bank statements that freelance designer Matt Wiessler mocked up for him.

SEP 19, 1995: The Earl introduces Bashir to Princess Diana.

NOV 5, 1995: The sensational Panorama interview with Diana is broadcast.

LATE NOVEMBER 1995: Wiessler expresses concern to Panorama’s series producer that the fake bank statements may have played a role in obtaining the interview. Bashir is asked for clarification.

DEC 22, 1995: Bashir passes a note from Diana to his bosses in which she says: ‘I was not shown any documents nor given any information by Martin Bashir that I was not already aware of.’

MAR 23, 1996: Bashir admits to BBC bosses that he had lied about not showing the fake bank statements to anybody. Yet two months later, he is sent a note – signed off by Tony Hall, then head of BBC News – that his dealings with Diana were ‘absolutely straight and fair’.

APR 7, 1996: The Mail on Sunday publishes a story about the fake statements. The BBC denies they were used to obtain the interview, but Hall opens an inquiry.

APR 25, 1996: Hall tells BBC governors that Bashir commissioned fake statements because ‘he wasn’t thinking’, adding: ‘I believe he is, even with this lapse, an honest and honourable man.’ Bashir leaves the BBC, but returns in 2016 as religious affairs editor.

AUG 28, 1996: Diana’s divorce from Prince Charles is finalised.

Gulu Lalvani (pictured in 1997), was the wealthy, British, Pakistani businessman Diana briefly dated in the last year of her life. He said that the Princess was pleased about the interview
    +28

Gulu Lalvani (pictured in 1997), was the wealthy, British, Pakistani businessman Diana briefly dated in the last year of her life. He said that the Princess was pleased about the interview

But she argues she never really regretted doing the interview, although she was never aware of the dishonesty in Bashir’s approach.

At the annual fashion gala in New York City on May 6, Brooklyn, 25, attended without Nicola, 29, as she continues to spend quality time with her grandmother.

On his Instagram Stories right before hitting the red carpet, Brooklyn wrote, “missing my beautiful wife tonight as my date 🙁 but happy she’s with naunni x can’t wait to see you both tomorrow baby.”

Nicola reshared his post on her own Instagram Stories and added, “i love you baby you look so handsome.” The star added in another post that she and her grandma had a “cupcake party” while “watching all the beautiful MET dresses together.”

The actress recently shared photos on Instagram of her and her grandmother, writing on April 26 that “being with you is literally magic.”

“i love being by your side,” Nicola wrote. “thank you for choosing me to be your granddaughter i more than love you naunni. our time together is so precious to me. thank you for teaching me how to love others so deeply and fiercely. there isn’t a moment next to you i take for granted. your laugh is the best sound in the world and i want to hear it for the rest of my life.”

The dress code for this year’s star-studded event is “The Garden of Time.” The accompanying Costume Institute exhibit, titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” showcases approximately 250 items spanning more than 400 years of fashion history — from an 1877 Charles Frederick Worth ballgown to modern-day pieces from the likes of Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney.

Nicola took Brooklyn to his very first Met Gala in 2021, nearly a year after they announced their engagement. The model and actress wore a bright pink Valentino gown and pale pink opera gloves, while Brooklyn — who is the oldest son of Victoria and David Beckham — opted for a classic black tux.

Only weeks after their lavish Palm Beach, Fla., wedding, the pair stepped out together to the 2022 Met Gala, both in Valentino looks. Nicola once again chose a vibrant pink gown, featuring cape-style sleeves and a plunging neckline, and paired it with vampy platform shoes.

Brooklyn wore a cream suit with a sheer, open-collared shirt and white sneakers. He told Vogue at the time that he wanted to push the envelope for fashion’s biggest night.

“Usually, I just go very simple and wear black suits, but this year, I wanted to add a little bit more,” he said. “When I saw that sheer shirt for the first time, though, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, can I pull this off?’ But it was so comfortable.”

“It’s definitely one of my favorite outfits I’ve ever worn,” he added.

At the 2023 gala, the couple channeled the theme of “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” by wearing the late French designer’s signature colors, black and white. They once again went with Valentino — a white strapless ruched gown with a black bow at the waist for Nicola, and an all-black suit and a sheer shirt for Brooklyn. They both accessorized with a collection of statement necklaces.

Though the two always appear perfectly in sync when it comes to their style, Nicola told PEOPLE last month that the couple’s fashion tastes are often at odds. “I feel like Brooklyn’s favorite is a white T-shirt and jeans,” Nicola said of her husband’s preference for more casual looks.

Nicola said there will be times when she’ll get all dolled up for a party or an event, only to discover that Brooklyn had a decidedly different idea about the dress code for the evening.

“And then he comes out of the closet and I’m like, ‘Well, you’re sweatshirt vibes tonight. I did not get the memo, but we’re too late now, we have to leave,’ ” she joked of their mismatched looks.

While Brooklyn may not share his wife’s passion for fashion, his mother certainly does. Nicola has spoken in the past about how she and mother-in-law Victoria Beckham bond over style, and she recently told PEOPLE she can’t help but covet the designer’s enviable wardrobe.

“Anytime I get in that closet I’m like, ‘Please!’ ” she said. “It’s like heaven in there.”

Retired Soccer Star Hidetoshi Nakata Talks David Beckham Comparisons: ‘Don’t Really Care About What People Say’ (Exclusive)

The Japanese athlete, who was named one of ‘Teen People’s Sexiest Guys Ever,’ looks back on becoming one of Asia’s first superstar soccer players

In the 2000s, Hidetoshi Nakata was one of the hottest players in soccer, on and off the field.

Now retired, the Japanese soccer star, 47, was one of his country’s most promising players when he transferred to Italian team Perugia in 1998. Nakata was 19 years old when he moved to Europe to play in the competitive Italian soccer league Serie A. Over the next decade, he became one of the most popular players to come from an Asian country. With three nominations for the Ballon d’Or and sponsorships with brands like Nike and Calvin Klein, Nakata was a superstar at home and abroad.

Nakata’s marketability and impact on Japanese participation in soccer earned comparisons to David Beckham’s rise to fame in England. Looking back at his career for the 20th anniversary of Teen People’s Sexiest Guys Ever list, Nakata tells PEOPLE that he was well aware that fans likened him to Beckham, 49.

“But basically, I don’t really care about what people say, because what people say is not what I think,” the former midfielder says. “People can talk good about me and bad about me — whatever.”

The pair never met on the field for a professional match. However, their then-teams — Manchester United and Parma FC — played an exhibition in 2002, and the two have remained friendly over the years.

“Even today, when [David] comes to Japan, sometimes we meet up,” Nakata reveals. “The good thing about football is no border. Everybody can speak different languages, and we become friends.”

Nakata doesn’t use social media today, as he doesn’t like seeing others talk about him, but he admits that when he was a young pro athlete, he was more “naive.”

“I was listening to what people say. I was under big pressure, and I was really struggling dealing with my feelings,” he reveals.

The athlete continues, “With the time, you know how to deal with pressure and emotion that you have. So I think I had enough experience to keep my mind in the peace.”

The attention remained on him until his early retirement at age 29, cutting his contract with Italian club Fiorentina short. He stepped away from the soccer world but remained involved in fashion and launched a line of sake, the Japan Craft Sake Company.

When asked if he misses competing on the field, Nakata says, “Well, if I say no, maybe that’s lie. But I have a different type of passion and emotion today. And I’m kind of a person [who] never looks back. Always, I look forward.”

Earl Spencer shared a sweet snap from his childhood to Instagram

AN UNSEEN picture of Princess Diana has been released – and fans can’t help but spot the uncanny resemblance to her granddaughter Charlotte.

In a heartwarming post on Instagram, the image showed Earl Spencer on a garden swing, with Diana stood by his side and Frances behind them pushing the swing.

Mum Frances would have been 31 at the time, Earl Spencer was three years old and Diana was around six.

Earl Spencer reflected on the picture and the “happy” times with his older sister at Althorp estate in West Northamptonshire.

The post read: “My mother, Diana and I, in 1967. I would have been three, and Diana five or six. I love how happy each of us looks.

“At this stage of my life, my mother nicknamed me ‘Buzz’ – because she saw me as having the endless energy of a rather happy – and busy – bee.”

Hundreds rushed to the comments to agree how much a young Diana was the spitting image of Princess Charlotte.

One person said: “You can really see Princess Charlotte in Diana in this photo!!”

A second added: “Diana looks just like Charlotte. Great memory!”

Another wrote: “Princess Charlotte is the spitting image of Lady Diana. The memory of your wonderful sister lives on.”

A fourth commented: “That was the first thing I thought. Charlotte looks just like her grandma Princess Diana.”
Camilla and Diana are completely different. The new Queen is kind, lovely and supportive
And it isn’t the first time that the similarity has been drawn.

In 2020, Prince William and Princess Kate released a series of family snaps to celebrate Father’s Day and Wills’ birthday.

It showed the dad-of-three playing with George, Charlotte and Louis on a swing and rolling around on some grass.

Thousands commented on Charlotte’s smile and said it was similar to her grandma, who’s the inspiration behind one of her middle names.

Princess Diana sadly died at the age of 36 when the car she was travelling in crashed in a Paris tunnel on August 31, 1997.

It has been 27 years since she passed away – with members of the public able to visit a memorial to pay their respects.

Diana’s remote grave however, can only be visited by family.

THE FINAL INSULT Princess Diana’s intimate love letters to James Hewitt offered for $1m sparking fears they will be made public

PRINCESS Diana’s intimate love letters to James Hewitt are being offered for sale in the US in what is being called his “final insult” to her memory.

A US auction house has lined up a wealthy collector to buy the 64 notes with a price tag of up to $1million (£780,000) — raising fears they could be made public.

Former Army officer Hewitt, now 65, had previously offered the letters as collateral for a £500,000 loan.

They were written between 1989 and 1991, including the period Hewitt — who had a secret five-year affair with the princess until 1992 — was serving in the Gulf War.

They are in Diana’s distinctive script, are highly intimate and would cause embarrassment to the royals if released.

Ingrid Seward, author of royal book My Mother and I, said: “James Hewitt has betrayed Diana in so many ways so this is just the final insult.

“I presume Hewitt desperately needs the money and he sees the value in these letters.

“Diana was a prolific letter writer but none of this intimate nature.

“It is unthinkable these notes for such a sensitive time in her life could become public.”

The Sun on Sunday can reveal that in October last year intermediaries on behalf of Hewitt contacted top London auction house Bonhams with a view to selling the cache.

Experts at the firm valued the trove — which include many sent on distinctive military paper known as “Blueys” — at between $400,000 (£311,000) and $600,000 (£466,000).

In an email, the company stated: “We believe that open market auction would almost certainly be the best way to achieve the best price.”
Princess Diana’s lover James Hewitt denies he is Prince Harry’s father
However, Bonhams declined to sell them and advised seeking a buyer in the US.

An expert at the firm wrote: “We would recommend sale in the US because there do seem to be more potential buyers at this level there, and because the sale is likely to be less contentious than in the UK.”

Rival London auction house Sotheby’s was approached about the letters the month before.

They declined to estimate what they may be worth.

US auction house Heritage, based in Dallas, Texas, was then contacted.

It claims to be the “world’s largest collectibles auctioneer”.

A spokesman for Hewitt told The Sun on Sunday: “Heritage Auctions were approached on behalf of a representative of James Hewitt solely to value and authenticate the letters for personal reasons and insurance purposes.

“He has no intention to sell and is not soliciting offers to buy.”

But an email sent in late January by a Heritage chief states: “After much discussion, it was decided that the best way forward to proceed was to work with a likely potential buyer they already have in mind for a private sale.

“They (the Heritage partners) feel this would remove the letters from appearing at public auction for a long time and remove us from any negative fall-out.”

The email then discusses arrangements for “the material to be fully insured at $1million”.

The letters were written between 1989 and 1991, including the period Hewitt was serving in the Gulf War
When The Sun on Sunday approached Heritage Auctions’ executive vice-president Joe Maddalena, at their Dallas HQ, he said: “We can’t comment, I can’t comment.

“I really don’t know what you’re talking about. I can’t comment on that. No comment.”

It is not the first time Hewitt — a tank squadron commander in the Gulf — has been accused of trying to cash in on the documents.

Diana would later speak of her “utter betrayal” by Hewitt, who she believed had burned them.

The princess, who first met Hewitt at a party hosted by her lady-in-waiting, Hazel West, in 1986, confirmed the relationship in her 1995 BBC interview with Martin Bashir.

In it, she said: “Yes, I adored him. Yes I was in love with him. But I was very let down.”

She officially divorced from the then Prince Charles in 1996 before her death the next year in a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris alongside her partner Dodi Fayed and their driver, Henri Paul.

Two years later, in a deal with the Spencer family’s lawyers, Hewitt promised to store the letters in a safe place, to never be sold and to be destroyed when he died.

At that time they were reluctantly returned to him by the Royal Family, under threat of legal action, after they were handed over to police by a national newspaper which received them from another of his exes.

In 2000, Hewitt was involved in a newspaper sting where it was revealed he had suggested selling the mementos for £10million.

Three years later, he admitted live on CNN that he wanted to sell the 64 letters that the couple had exchanged for the right price.

He told talk show host Larry King that they were “important historical documents” and it might be “irresponsible” not to sell them.

He said they were “extremely well written and nothing to be ashamed of”.

It was reported around this time, that senior royals and Diana’s estate executors had considered exploring ways to acquire the letters.

Their existence had become public knowledge back in 1994.

Author Anna Pasternak said she had read them while researching her book, Princess In Love, about Diana and Hewitt’s affair.

The written words are the copyright of Diana’s estate, managed by her sisters and other family members.

However, legal experts have said that copyright would not be breached if they were displayed in a museum or exhibition, for example, rather than published.

Hewitt earned around £100,000 from Pasternak’s book and a substantial sum for his memoirs.

He also cashed in with reality TV appearances on the back of his affair with the princess.

He is now living under his widowed mother’s roof, sharing her two-bed flat in an old, converted mansion in the Devon village of Farringdon.
