EastEnders announces extra episode to highlight Phil Mitchell’s tragic mental health story

EastEnders fans said that Phil Mitchell’s mental health battle is ‘the most powerful, moving’ storyline they’ve seen, and the BBC soap is highlighting his journey in a Comic Relief special

EastEnders will air a special one-off feature focusing on Phil Mitchell, focusing on the heartbreaking issues he’s been dealing with over the last few months. Phil, played by Steve McFadden, has been struggling with his mental health in recent episodes, showing a different layer to the brash character we came to know.

Last month, after an emotional reflection through Phil’s childhood and the current state of his wellbeing, we even saw him attempt to take his own life after suffering through a psychotic episode.

The BBC soap is giving extra focus to Phil and his battle, and will air an exclusive five-minute episode with Comic Relief on Red Nose Day – Friday March 21 – to highlight the complexities of mental health issues and Phil’s own journey to find treatment.

In the episode, the broadcaster shared that following Phil’s harrowing experience aired during the EastEnders 40th anniversary week, he will be shown seeking the help he needs at a mental health unit.

While there, the soap stalwart will meet another patient named Andy – who has also experienced homelessness – and have an opportunity to bond and open up in a way he hasn’t done before.

EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw stated how important Phil’s journey was, sharing: “We’re thrilled to be working alongside Comic Relief and Brandon Centre as we continue to explore the complex realities of Phil’s journey with mental health. Whilst seeking treatment, Phil and Andy quickly realise they have more in common than they first anticipated.”

The CEO of Comic Relief, Samir Patel, also shared in a statement: “Comic Relief has a long and proud history of supporting incredible organisations who are delivering vital work to help tackle homelessness and the ongoing mental health crisis.

“We are extremely grateful to EastEnders and Brandon Centre for their work in helping to create this powerful and poignant film that will resonate with so many. Together with your support this Red Nose Day, we can help ensure support just like this is available to those who need it the most right here in the UK and around the world.

Fans were incredibly moved by Phil’s gut-wrenching journey in his recent story arc, and praised the show, writers, and acting for highlighting such an important issue.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, one person wrote: “Tonight’s #eastenders is pure cinema. Phil Mitchell’s agony, struggle and emotion is completely heartbreaking. Give Steve McFadden all the awards, and an MBE.”

A second fan shared after the character’s attempt to take his own life: “Watched today’s episode.. One of the most powerful moving episodes ever watched, Steve McFadden is arguably one of the greatest actors of all time, his portrayal of mental health/psychosis is incredible.. Well done to all involved can’t wait for next week #EastEnders.”
