Coronation Street and Emmerdale will not air this evening once again – as fans are left fuming over missing episodes. The two ITV soaps usually air on a regular pattern but it has been disrupted by the football coverage.

Normally, Emmerdale will air every day for half an hour with the exception of a Thursday where we get double the drama from the Dales in a hour long episode. Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for an hour usually.

However, this week we’ve seen a very interrupted schedule. Emmerdale aired on Tuesday night and will air on Thursday (hour long episode) and as usual on Friday night too. This means a total of two hours of Emmerdale this week.

On Coronation Street, we have got a new episode coming tomorrow evening (Thursday) at the later time of 9pm and then a further episode on Friday at the usual time. Again, this means two hours of Coronation Street this week.

Usually, we get extra episodes over the weekend to compensate for the lack of episodes in the week if there are scheduling conflicts, but it looks like fans might be missing out. The soaps are affected again next week so soap fans will be missing out over the coming two weeks, with a string of ‘missing’ episodes

It comes before a huge change takes place, which will see the soaps cut from six hours a week to five in a dramatic cost-cutting measure by the ITV. From 2026, the soaps will air a power hour of content from 8pm.

Instead of its hour long episodes three times a week, Coronation Street will now air every day for half an hour. Emmerdale will air before for half an hour, and the hour long Thursday episode will now just be half that time.

ITV’s Managing Director of Media and Entertainment Kevin Lygo said of the changes: “The new commissioning pattern is viewer-led. We already give more choice than ever to viewers on how they watch us through ITVX and we want to present their favourite soap to them, in the most digestible way. In a world where there is so much competition for viewers’ time and attention, and viewing habits continue to change, we believe this is the right amount of episodes that fans can fit into their viewing schedule.

“Whilst viewing is growing on ITVX, we know a significant proportion of our soaps’ audience still watch us via the schedule. This new pattern is in the DNA of the soap genre – nobody else does 30 minute drama this successfully. It creates a soap power hour that’s consistent, and easy to find in the linear schedule, for the UK’s biggest soaps.

“This new commissioning pattern will mean five hours of soaps a week, rather than the current six. We are conscious this will have an impact for the people who work on the soaps team. We will support our colleagues in ITV Studios as they work through these changes, and will do what we can to mitigate the impact on our people.”
