David Beckham fell in love with Victoria after watching her performance, but after learning about her family background, he considered giving up (video)

As one of Hollywood’s most enduring couples, David and Victoria Beckham have managed to not only stay together, but keep the entire world enthralled with their love story.

Yes, we all saw peeks of it with the soccer star’s Netflix docuseries, Beckham,

but during an appearance on SiriusXM’s This Life of Mine with James Corden, David opened up about the moment he knew that he’d marry his wife.

Corden and Beckham, who are longtime friends, talked about everything from soccer to the Spice Girls,

which encouraged the talk show host to ask his pal what his favorite song from the supergroup was. And while he didn’t have the right answer,

which is “2 Become 1,” he did have a very sentimental reason to choose the Spice Girls’ second single, “Say You’ll be There.”

Fans will remember that the video included the girls in a desert and, more specifically, Victoria wearing a skintight halter catsuit.

“’Say You’ll Be There,’” he said. “It’s my favorite, because it was the song that was on the TV when I was sat in my room with Gary Nevill and it came on the tele and that was when I turned around to Gary and said, ‘I’m gonna marry that one in the short black dress.’” Dress? No. Corden corrected him and David did end up remembering correctly, saying that it was definitely a “catsuit.”

Beckham went on to say that while he didn’t know anything about his bride-to-be at the time, he was aware that she was in the public eye and that he wasn’t the only one who was interested in her. Of course, he piled on the compliments, too, mentioning how strong and beautiful she is. The two famously got married on July 4, 1999, and have four kids together: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper Seven, their only daughter. The couple will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary this year.

“I really just fancied her. I did. I just fancied her. I didn’t know what she was like as a person. I just actually fancied her like most people did at that time and I didn’t know who I was marrying, who I was going to be with for the rest of my life. I didn’t realize what a strong woman she was and that is what really attracted me to her more than anything,” David said. “Yes, she’s beautiful. Yes, she was sexy. Yes, I fancied her, but in all honesty, I like a strong woman and I like the fact that she works hard.”

And if anyone’s wondering who is in charge of the Beckham household, it’s VB. David noted that she “runs the family,” not that anyone ever doubted that.

“I like the fact that she’s a great mum. I like the fact that she looks after me sometimes, most of the time, and you know, we’ve created this life with four amazing children, which are the most important things in our life; So that’s why I chose Victoria,” he said. “The way that she kind of runs the family, I think that is the most important thing to me because family has always been the most important, and the greatest thing she’s ever given me is my four children.”
