CAM ON King Charles was ‘so miserable’ married to Diana, they were always at loggerheads but Camilla has given him ‘backbone’

KING Charles was “so miserable” married to Diana but Queen Camilla has given him a “backbone”, according to a royal expert.

Royal editor Ingrid Seward revealed on The Sun’s Royal Show that the key to Charles and Camilla’s strong relationship is “laughter”.

Speaking to The Sun’s Royal Correspondent Matt Wilkinson, Ingrid shared: “Charles used to look so miserable when he was married to the gorgeous Diana – how could a man look so miserable married to someone so beautiful and lovely – but he was obviously very unhappy.

“He just looked so happy around Queen Camilla.

“And you can tell that she’s sort of given him a backbone.

“She is really a glass half full, and he is a glass half empty – and she said that – and she makes him laugh.”

Ingrid shared how King Charles and Queen Camilla’s London home Clarence House is a “really happy place” and it is “full of laughter” and a “little bit chaotic.”

The royal editor added: “I think that they really have a laugh.”

“And I know that being royal really separates you from the rest of the world – it’s a very lonely place to be.

“And if you have someone that you’re not getting on with, it’s even more difficult.”

Ingrid claimed that Queen Camilla is also “so supportive” of King Charles, which is something he “never had” growing up.

She continued: “She praises him all the time, ‘darling you were wonderful’, ‘your speech was wonderful’.

Diana told me the real reason her marriage to Charles failed just before she died – and it wasn’t Camilla
“And he needs that, because in his youth, he never had that.

“So in his dotage, I suppose you can say, he’s really being praised.

And you can see how happy he is when he’s meeting the crowds.

“I’ve never seen Charles look so joyous as he was over the Easter weekend, shaking hands and smiling, and every walkabout he’s done since he became king, he looks a really happy man, despite the fact his health isn’t great at the moment.”

King Charles married Lady Diana Spencer on Wednesday, July 29, 1981.

They tied the knot at St Paul’s Cathedral, in a traditional Church of England wedding.

It was thought to have been watched by a global TV audience of 750 million, and the UK had a national holiday on the day.

However, the couple split in 1992 and finalised their divorce in 1996.

King Charles and Camilla’s highly-publicised romance began at a party.

They were introduced in 1971 by Charles’ college girlfriend Lucia Santa Cruz and quickly bonded over their love of polo.

How King Charles’ year ahead may look

THE rejuvenated King could have a busy year. Here are some events he could attend…

MAY 8 and 21: Buckingham Palace Garden Parties.

MAY 21-25: Chelsea Flower Show. Charles would follow in his mother’s footsteps — she visited 50 times during her 70-year reign.

JUNE 6: The 80th anniversary of D-Day in France and UK.

JUNE 15: Trooping the Colour birthday parade in London.

JUNE 17: Garter Day parade, Windsor Castle.

JUNE 18-22: Racing at Royal Ascot.

JULY 3: Holyrood Week. The Ceremony of the Keys sees the monarch receive the keys from the Lord Provost of Edinburgh and be welcomed into the “ancient and hereditary kingdom of Scotland”.

OCTOBER: Two week state visit of Australia.

They started dating almost straight away and attended a number of polo matches together.

However, when King Charles left for the Royal Navy they split up, and Camilla got engaged to Army officer Andrew Parker Bowles, and they tied the knot in 1973.

Their love didn’t last and they divorced in 1995, with Camilla going on to marry King Charles in a civil ceremony in 2005.

Charles revealed on January 16 that he needed treatment for an enlarged prostate. While in hospital doctors discovered cancer and he later had treatment.

Buckingham Palace sources said the monarch is feeling “positive”, and medics “optimistic”, after he was able to go on a walkabout at Easter Sunday.
