The Sussexes have not attended the event, also known as the King’s Birthday Parade, since 2019 – a year before they quit their roles as senior working royals. And a royal expert now says there were brief talks on whether to invite the pair to this year’s ceremony, but the Firm is said to have quickly shot down that idea.

Royal expert Tom Quinn told The Mirror : “There was a brief discussion among the senior Royals about inviting Harry and Meghan to trooping the colour, but the idea was quickly dismissed because even if the couple accepted the invitation there is a feeling that they cast a dark shadow over everything.”

Princess Kate made a return to the public eye at the event following the news she is undergoing treatment for cancer. Kate, 42, beamed as she stood on the balcony at Buckingham Palace during the climax of the event. As the RAF flypast took place, Kate was seen waving to the cheering crowds as she stood shoulder-to-shoulder with King Charles, who is also having cancer treatment.

The princess stood on the balcony alongside her husband Prince William and the pair were seen chatting enthusiastically while their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis watched on.

While Harry was a no-show once again, another royal expert said he would have felt “regret” at his decision to stay away. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams believes the Duke of Sussex must harbour some nostalgia for his past duties, especially those linked to his time with the military.

Speaking after their absence, Fitzwilliams told the Sun: “I think when it comes to military matters Harry has always taken an interest.”

He also shared his thoughts on the Sussexes’ split from the Royal Family, adding: “I think that he does unquestionably view the way the break has occurred with the Royal Family. Which, as I say in my opinion, is the fault of the Sussexes. They’ve been hoping for an apology from the Royal Family regarding their treatment during their time as senior royals, which is unlikely to happen. There’s likely a touch of regret there.”

“Meghan has said she’s only prepared to return to England if she and Harry have a place of their own and the security they both feel is essential,” Quinn said. “Meghan will never return to the UK and stay with her husband‘s relatives.”

Quinn also said that it won’t be easy for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to befriend Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children, though it is possible. “If the couple manage to find a permanent home and sort out the security issue, they will certainly want to bring their children to the UK,” he said, “but it’s going to take a lot of diplomacy to get to the point where Archie and Lili are able to develop a genuine and warm relationship with their cousins George, Charlotte and Louis.”

Perhaps in order to secure a new home, Harry has to win his current appeal; Harry recently lost a lawsuit against Britain’s Home Office for stripping him of his security and is now trying to appeal the decision. For now, nothing is set in stone, but Meghan has made it clear that she has no intention of returning to the UK; she chose not to accompany Harry during his trip home in early May and instead met him overseas in Nigeria immediately after.

Over the weekend, Prince Harry’s close friend and fellow polo player Nacho Figueras posted pictures on his Instagram story of two new American Riviera Orchard products – raspberry jam and dog biscuits – just hours before Trooping the Colour.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams claimed this was a “ridiculous” PR stunt and a way to get more media attention on her, adding that current A-list support for her brand is dwindling.

He told The Sun: “If the Sussexes want to make an impression in the United States, particularly in Hollywood, they need A-list support, and they’re not getting it… To do anything on the day of Trooping the Colour was ridiculous.”

He also pointed to Royal Family protocol that ensures there are no diary clashes between members of The Firm – something he said Prince Harry and Meghan had “never cared” about.

The couple, who currently live in the US with their two children, have been at loggerheads with the Royal Family for some time – especially since making the decision to step down as senior working royals at the start of 2020.

However, despite tensions, Harry is reportedly keen on wanting to rebuild his relationship with his family but the couple are said to be stuck in a “grey area” over what the future holds.

Speaking to Sky News Australia, the Daily Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers said: “We know pretty much that Meghan has made a decision. She’s not going to be coming back to Britain as Harry has done over the last few months.

“Harry does want that relationship with his family so it’s a bit of a grey area at the moment, I think.”

Quinn then said how Harry has picked up the “mantle” for his mother as an adult. He said: “Diana famously fell out with ‘the firm’ as she called it and spent much of her adult life criticising an institution she felt had let her down. Harry has taken on his mother‘s mantle by carrying on exactly the same kind of criticism.”

Harry – who lost his mother in 1997 when he was just 12 years old after she was involved in a fatal car crash in Paris, France – has spoken at length about the impact of his mother’s death. Quinn added: “He hates that he feels he has to do this and he would like to be close again to his father King Charles and his brother Prince William, but like his mother he’s locked into a battle that has become an obsession for him.”

Tom also said Harry’s time in the military served as an escape for him from the ongoing battle he has had with his emotions not just over his mother but with feelings of isolation and not fitting in throughout his life. He added: “Harry‘s statement that fighting in Iraq was better than remaining in Britain makes complete sense given that we know one of the few periods in his life during which he was happy was his time in the military. Fighting in Iraq gave him a sense of camaraderie that he has never had with his family.”

There’s something about royal events that leads little Louis to be in his element.

Prince Louis stole the show at this year’s Trooping the Colour, but it’s not a huge surprise, it’s kind of his thing.

Trooping the Colour, also known as the King’s Birthday Parade, is a way for the nation to gather and celebrate the monarch’s birthday.

The day starts with a procession down the Mall, from Buckingham Palace to the Horse Guards Parade and then back to the Palace.

In years past, Louis has been seen pulling faces, in the carriage and on the Palace balcony, sticking his tongue out and waving, as small children do.

But, Louis just turned six in April, and he’s definitely a little more grown up, and his scene-stealing moment was a little more refined this year.

This year, it was actually at the Horse Guards Parade where Louis was spotted dancing with a TV presenter saying: “Kate, and the kids, were watching from a nearby window, with the youngest, up to his old tricks.”

It wasn’t known until Friday afternoon, if little Louis and his siblings would attending, but that all changed, when their mum, Kate, released a personal statement about her welllbeing.

The heartfelt letter addressed her preventative cancer treatment, saying she has her good days and her bad days, but when she is well enough, she likes to be out and about when she can be, and reveealed, she did plan to attend Trooping.

7News Australia’s Hugh Whitfield talked about the family reunion: “The Wales family of five, back together, back on the Buckingham Palace balcony, smiles for her husband and for her father-in-law.”

It was Mr Whitfield who spotted Louis in the window, doing a little dance, showing off a shoulder shimmy.

He is definitely bringing the “cute factor,’ as royal expert Pauline Maclaran so accurately put it.

Louis just turned six on April 23 with his mum, Princess Kate, taking his photo and sharing it with the world. In the photo, Louis is seen laying on his stomach in the grass, no shoes on, with his bare feet kicked up behind him.

He’s propped up on his elbows with face framed by his little hands, smiling widely at the person taking his photo, which is believed to be his mum, Kate, also laying on the ground, to capture that angle.

Kate stepped out for King Charles’s big day, but it’s not to suggest this is an official return for the Princess of Wales, she is still on medical leave and wil return to public-facing duties when the time is right for her, it’s been widely reported.

“This is a family moment, this is about Kate supporting her father-in-law and her father-in-law being really, really pleased that she could be there at all,” said 7News Australia’s Chris Ship.

The Duke of Sussex’s relationship with his father and brother remains extremely tense due to his and Meghan Markle’s tumultuous royal exit in 2020.

Since then, the Sussexes have launched several attacks on the Royal Family in Netflix shows and in Harry’s memoir – Spare.

Harry’s reported efforts to build bridges with his family are yet to reap reward, and royal author Christopher Andersen claimed this is beginning to anger the Duke.

He told Fox News Digital: “Harry has tried again and again to make amends with his father but to no avail.

“The King and William have really dug in, and the more Harry is rebuffed, the angrier and more frustrated he gets. He must be thinking, ‘Why should I keep quiet if my father and brother are stonewalling me?’ As far as William and the king are concerned, Harry has been banging his head against the wall.

“It seems inevitable that at some point he will throw up his hands and write another searingly honest book. At the same time, Harry is also well aware that now is not the time to talk out of turn about his family.

“People around the world are praying for the King and Princess Kate to make full recoveries. Harry surely would not want to be seen kicking them when they’re down.”

Harry returned to the UK for an Invictus Games event in May and reportedly turned down an invitation from King Charles to stay at Buckingham Palace during his visit.

The Duke and his father didn’t see each other despite being just a few miles away.

Mr Andersen claimed, however, that it is Charles and William who are “shunning” Harry to focus on the cancer treatment of both the Monarch and the Princess of Wales, Kate.

He added: “The King and the Princess of Wales’s cancer battles have made it easier for both King Charles III and Prince William to put Harry out of their minds.

“They are both shunning him now because they can’t afford not to – they simply can’t handle the distraction.”

“Charles and Harry aren’t speaking, period. The fallout from ‘Spare’ has been eclipsed by Kate’s and the King’s cancer battles. King Charles and William hadn’t got the time to worry about whether Harry would take more potshots at them.

“Harry has already gotten the message that there are consequences for his attacks on the royals; his entire family has turned its back on him.”

Meanwhile, royal expert Tom Quinn has told The Mirror that the King has sent a direct warning to Harry.

He claimed: “Harry has been asked directly by his father not to write or say publicly anything further about the family or his brother that might cause trouble. Everyone knows that when a King asks you to do something, there are going to be consequences if you do not obey.”
