Roman Kemp feeling ‘pressure’ from dad Martin as he admits he ‘doesn’t care anymore’

Roman Kemp has opened up about the pressure he feels to keep going and admitted there are times when he reaches breaking point and feels like he doesn’t care

Roman Kemp has opened up about feeling the “pressure” of a family trait, admitting there are times he feels like he doesn’t “care”.

On a recent instalment of their podcast, FFS! My dad Is Martin Kemp, Roman confessed to being “stressed” this week and often wanting to “turn everything off”. This led him to question his dad, Martin, about the idea of retiring, only to learn that Martin couldn’t imagine stopping.

The conversation took a turn when Roman pinpointed the source of the pressure: “You.” To which a surprised Martin responded, “From me? Why me? You’ve got a great work ethic. Is work ethic…is that another way of saying you work your b***s off?”. Roman clarified his view on what constitutes a good work ethic: “Good work ethic isn’t you working your b******s off. It’s about a balance between work and life split whilst maintaining drive.”

He then delved into his personal struggle: “Can you maintain drive and ambition alongside being true to yourself and understanding who you are? I struggle with that massively because I just…honestly, I just run myself into a moment where I’m like, ‘I don’t care anymore. I don’t care. Like, sack it all off’.

When Martin questioned why Roman didn’t just call in sick, Roman admitted he couldn’t bear the thought of letting everyone down, reports Gloucestershire Live.

The One Show’s very own has candidly shared his battle with depression, having admitted in the poignant documentary Our Silent Emergency that he once stood on the brink of suicide. Roman, now 32, opened up last year about a significant milestone: he had ceased taking antidepressants for the first time since he was a teenager at 15, and was embracing the journey to “understanding what [his] emotional side” really felt like

He delved into the nuances of his emotional shifts, noting that he was figuring out why he might “cry more” and “get a bit snappier at my friends”, while clarifying his stance: “I’m neither for or against taking anti-depressants, I’m about what is right for YOU and if it helps you then go for it.”

Metro reported on Roman’s reflections regarding how crucial medication had been in managing his mental health challenges. The former Capital Breakfast host disclosed that it supported him “through a long period of mental struggle”. In a message of solidarity and support, he mentioned that he was sharing this personal detail in hopes it might reassure others who are apprehensive about “anyone was ever worried about starting/stopping
