WBC champion Deontay Wilder believes he can knock out 1986 Mike Tyson

KO artist Deontay Wilder had no hesitation in suggesting that he could have knocked out 1986 Mike Tyson.

The WBC champ, 34, has become one of the most feared punchers in the heavyweight division and his punching power has led to interesting comparisons with a prime ‘Iron Mike.’

When TMZ specifically asked Wilder in 2018 if he would stand a chance against Tyson, he unequivocally responded: “Yes.”

But the ‘Bronze Bomber’ went on to proclaim that he fears no heavyweight, past or present, by adding that whether they’re “old school [or] new school, I knock them all out.”

Boxing fans have previously debated the idea of an epic clash between Wilder and Tyson and who would emerge victoriously.

But Wilder’s comments at the time also provoked a response from boxing legend Lennox Lewis, who KO’d Tyson in a blockbuster bout in 2002.

The 54-year-old former undisputed heavyweight champ wasn’t entirely convinced that Wilder would have what it takes to beat a younger Tyson.

“I just heard Deontay Wilder said he would destroy a young Mike Tyson,” he said.

“My thoughts are that it’s easy to talk until you actually get in the ring.

“I like Wilder, but he’s never been in there with someone that ferocious [and] who truly wants to break his ribs with every punch. I don’t see it!

“I love Wilder’s confidence [and] you need that to sit atop the heavyweight division.

“He’s hungry and shows up in probably best shape in the division, but there are levels to it and he’s still adding to his arsenal.

“My best advice to the entire crop of young heavyweight champs is to focus on being the best of YOUR era!

“Out of respect and reality. It’s unprovable.

“Of course, people asked but I found no need to speculate or compare myself to my idol Muhammad Ali or any other of the past greats.

“History will decide your place among the all-time greats, so go out there clean up the division and defend your title.

“Reign supreme and your work will speak for itself.”

When TMZ asked Tyson if he could see Wilder beating him in his prime, the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ responded: “I don’t think so.”
