Messi was gifted an enormous bottle of Catena Zapata, a more than century-old brand of wine from his native Argentina, posing with his boss for a celebratory snap.

Messi is celebrating his 37th birthday while away at the Copa America with Argentina. It is the 12th major international tournament of his career and he is hoping to win just his third title after Copa America success in 2021 and the World Cup in 2022.

“Happy Birthday to the greatest,” Beckham said. Messi replied with a simple: “Thank you very much David!!!”

WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI?

Messi and Argentina began their Copa America campaign with a 2-0 win over Canada and will continue on June 25 when they face Chile at MetLife Stadium, then Peru four days later. With the competition running until July 14 and alongside the ongoing MLS season, Messi is unlikely to play for his club again until the end of July at the earliest.
