Mike Tyson’s trainer insists 57-year-old has zero concerns about suffering possible brain injury against Jake Paul after doctor warned legend he could face potentially lethal consequences

Mike Tyson‘s trainer, Rafael Cordeiro, does not have any concerns about about Tyson suffering a possible brain injury when he returns to the ring to face Jake Paul on July 20.

Cordeiro signed off on Tyson’s first professional fight since 2005 despite a stern warning from doctor Stephen Hughes, who sounded the alarm about the potentially lethal consequences for Tyson.

There will be a 31-year age difference between the fighters when they square off in four months.

Despite Tyson being considered one of the greatest boxers of all-time and Paul having fought more celebrities than trained boxers, there are many who are concerned about Tyson’s ability to still perform at a high level.

One of those Tyson detractors is now Cordeiro, who is in the gym training with Tyson every day.

‘I believe we don’t have to be concerned about it. We’re talking about a two-time world champion,’ Cordeiro said on ‘The MMA Hour’. ‘The guy didn’t have 20 fights in two years, he knows how to fight.

‘He’s fought against the best guys in the world,’ Cordeiro continued. ‘When he steps inside the ring he knows what to do. It’s not something new for Mike, and this fight is no different. He works hard every single day to go in there and try to knock Jake out from the beginning to the end. He’s going to prove that in July.’

Yet, Paul has displayed legitimate punching power, which has given plenty of concern for Tyson’s health if ‘The Problem Child’ lands any haymaker clean.

‘In older people, the brain tends to lose volume,’ Hughes said per The Conversation. ‘This lengthens the bridging veins and makes them more vulnerable to rupture.’

‘Bleeding from these torn veins causes a collection of blood that presses on the brain. This causes confusion, loss of consciousness, neurological disability and, in some cases, death,’ Hughes added.

Paul has transitioned from celebrity fights against the likes of Nate Robinson and Anderson Silva, to trained boxers recently. His only loss is to a trained boxer in Tommy Fury.

Of Tyson’s 50 career wins, 44 came via knockout. In November 2020, Tyson fought Roy Jones Jr. in an 8-round exhibition that ended in a draw.

Paul was born two months after Tyson’s first loss to Evander Holyfield, dropping ‘Iron Mike’ to 45-2 at the time.
