Formula One Brit Watch: Four British drivers finish in the points for the first time since 2000 as Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Oliver Bearman, and Lando Norris claim top 10 spots

You have to go back to the last race of the 2013 season for the last time that four Brits started on the grid: Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Jenson Button (McLaren-Mercedes), Paul di Resta (Force India-Mercedes) and Max Chilton (Marussia).

And you have to go back to Suzuka in 2000 for the last time (before yesterday) that four British drivers finished in the points: David Coulthard (McLaren-Mercedes), Jenson Button (Williams-BMW), Eddie Irvine (Jaguar-Cosworth) and Johnny Herbert (Jaguar-Cosworth).

GEORGE RUSSELL (MERCEDES) — Started 7th, Finished 6th

A relatively comfortable afternoon for Russell, who did what he could with the Mercedes and go one better on his seventh-place finish in Bahrain.

OLIVER BEARMAN (FERRARI) — Started 11th, finished 7th

Bearman was fearless and showed a maturity well beyond his years with a memorable debut.

His two early overtakes to go from 11th to ninth underlined how he looks made for this level and he showed why Ferrari think he is the next big thing.

Oliver Bearman finished seventh on his Formula 1 debut and was congratulated by Russell and Lewis Hamilton afterwards

LANDO NORRIS (MCLAREN) — Started 6th, Finished 8th

Probably a missed opportunity for Norris, especially given his team-mate Oscar Piastri finished in fourth.

Despite starting in sixth, Norris ended in eighth and perhaps McLaren’s race strategy of going for 37 out of the 50 laps on medium tyres was to blame.

This was probably a missed opportunity for Lando Norris, who could only come home in eighth

LEWIS HAMILTON (MERCEDES) — Started 8th, Finished 9th

Hard to see how he could have done much more as he held off Piastri for much of the race, before finishing ninth.

It looks set to be another season without challenging for Mercedes but there was a wonderful moment after the race as Hamilton and Russell congratulated Bearman

Hamilton finished ninth and this will likely be another year without challenging for a title for Mercedes
