At the BAFTA Awards on the morning of February 19 (Hanoi time), David Beckham was invited to announce the winner of the Outstanding Debut category.
According to The Sun, the audience was upset when the former player used the term “soccer” (how Americans call soccer) on the stage of England’s top movie event.
Specifically, Beckham shared: “Some people say that practice makes perfect. Well, this may be true in soccer (using ‘soccer’ and ‘football’ at the same time), but it is not accurate for football.”

Some opinions say that the fact that Beckham has lived in America for many years makes him seem to forget his origins. Currently, Beckham is the owner of the Inter Miami football team in the US.
This is one of the many times Beckham has been involved in controversy. In 2022, the former famous player was criticized by netizens when he decided to take a flight from Qatar to Boston (USA) to attend the Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony.
Beckham’s brief appearance at the environmental protection event was criticized for hypocrisy, because he had previously committed many actions that negatively affected the environment.
