Miriam Margolyes admitted she had been left “heartbroken” as the actress discussed a romantic interest that never flourished.

The British-Australian actress, 83, is currently in a loving relationship with her long-term partner Heather Sutherland and the pair have been together for 54 years.

In a candid chat with Gyles Brandreth on the Rosebud podcast, the Happy Feet star revealed she had fallen for a married man decades ago. It comes after the on-screen star was quizzed about past relationships, before meeting her current girlfriend.

At the time, a 17-year-old Miriam had fallen for a married man, who she described as the “loveliest man”.

“The first boyfriend was a beautiful young man,” she explained. “It was, of course, at Oxford where I was born and brought up.”

She went on: “I don’t know how I met him – I think I picked him up in the street. He was wheeling his daughter, a little baby.”

“He was married with a child. He was the most beautiful, loveliest man. I think if I found him earlier, I wouldn’t be gay – I don’t know.”

Gyles quizzed the Harry Potter star on whether they ever had a liaison to which she replied: “No, I just fell for him. I loved him and I never stopped. I remember him affectionately.”

She recalled the moment he told her he was married, adding, “he said, ‘we can’t pursue our friendship.'”

“I was heartbroken,” Miriam uttered, “but there you go. You get on with it. I never had another man again.”Miriam is a well-known face across the nation, featuring on popular films and talk shows – where she often has the audience in stitches.

She is in a civil partnership with Heather – an Australian historian, who stays out of the spotlight.

The couple first met in 1967 and they have been together ever since.

In Miriam’s 2021 autobiography, This Much Is True, she says of her partnership: “We have been together for 53 years. It is a big achievement.

“An academic and a Scholar, Heather is my polar opposite: reticent, incredibly private and reserved”.
