Royal Family: Meghan Markle receives ‘new title’ after making major decision
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently travelled to Nigeria, but the trip left some royal watchers divided.
Meghan Markle was bestowed with a new title upon her trip to Nigeria.
Meghan Markle has been given a new title unconnected to the Royal Family, as she and Prince Harry travelled to Nigeria for a three-day tour last month.
She was bestowed the traditional Yoruba name ‘Adetokunbo’ by the Olowo of Owo, the Yoruba King of Owo, and has since spoken about receiving the honour in a letter.
The Duchess of Sussex stated: “Thank you for your warm welcome to Nigeria. I am deeply humbled by your blessing of the traditional Yoruba name, Adetokunbo.
“I treasure the name and appreciate your trust in me to carry it with grace and dignity. Our trip to Nigeria was significant for many reasons, not least because it provided us an opportunity to explore and understand my heritage, which extends to our children.”
Some royal fans online praised Meghan for her attitude, with one writing: “It’s cool that Meghan’s embracing her Nigerian heritage. Representation matters, and it’s nice to see someone in the spotlight acknowledging.”
However, another was less convinced, commenting: “Embracing? Nah. Just attempting to be relevant.”
