Actress Dame Joanna Lumley has spoken out in favour of assisted dying, saying she would not want to carry on if she couldn’t talk or eat or recognise her loved ones.

The 79-year-old star said she supports the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which was backed by MPs last month and is heading for the Lords this autumn. The new law would allow terminally ill adults with less than six months to live to apply for an assisted death.

Asked about the bill in an interview with Saga Magazine, Dame Joanna, best known for her role as Patsy in the BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, said: “People are terribly anxious about it and think one may be coerced. But I’m saying this now, when nobody’s coercing me – don’t let me turn into somebody who doesn’t recognise the people I love most, where I’m having a miserable time. When I get to the stage where I can’t speak and have to be fed, that won’t be me any more – and that’s when I wouldn’t mind saying farewell.”

One of the bill’s most high-profile supporters has been TV presenter Dame Esther Rantzen, 85, who has terminal cancer and is being backed by her daughter Rebecca Wilcox. Esther recently urged members of the Lords not to block the legislation.

Dame Joanna’s support has been welcomed by campaigners, including Louise Shackleton. Louise is being probed by police after reporting herself for going with her husband Anthony, 59, to the Dignitas group in Switzerland. Anthony, who had motor neurone disease, had decided to end his life, aided by Dignitas, in December.

Louise, 58, from North Yorkshire, told the Mirror how she would be burying his ashes today. She said: “Monday is my husband’s 60th birthday and it’s the day we lay him to rest.

“He would have been overwhelmed that such a huge star has spoken out. I would like to thank Joanna on behalf of fellow campaigners for having the courage to speak out and to represent the vast majority of people who are in agreement with what she is saying but haven’t got her platform.”

Louise said she hoped the bill would make it through the Lords. She said: “Hopefully, there will be measured, educated and community focused progress to move this forward.”

Dignity in Dying CEO Sarah Wootton said: “Dame Joanna’s comments show that just like the overwhelming majority of the public, she supports assisted dying for terminally ill, mentally competent adults, which puts power in the hands of dying people to choose how they die. People want to know that when they are dying, they will have the peace of mind of being able to ask for a safe, peaceful assisted death.

“We urge the Lords to listen to dying people, bereaved families and the public.”

But the bill does have its opponents. Gordon Macdonald, CEO of Care Not Killing, said after the last vote: “This is a deeply flawed and dangerous bill which fails to protect vulnerable and disabled people from coercion.”

However Louise responded: “The bill does not include disabled people, it does not include people with anorexia or the elderly, unless they have a terminal illness with an assessed sound mind and less than six months to live.”

Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) continued to pull away from the influence of his horrible mother Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) in Thursday (December 18)’s Emmerdale, when he defied her to help Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards).

Celia’s attempt to ruin Ray’s romantic relationship with Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy), and the way she totally belittled and humiliated Ray afterwards, has perhaps made him begin to realise that she doesn’t always have his best interests at heart.

When Bear gashed his hand while working and Celia brusquely told Ray just to fix him up enough for him to work, previously Ray would have done just that. But this time he secretly defied her, telling Bear he would drive him to hospital to get the wound cleaned and stitched up properly

Both Bear and Ray remembered that when Anya (Alia Al-Shabibi)’s wounds were left untended she eventually died from an infection. Ray has become quite fond of Bear – which Celia branded ‘pathetic’ – and didn’t want that happening to him.
Bear walks alone in a field in EmmerdaleBear was found by Ray in the summer (Picture: ITV)
At the hospital Ray reminded Bear – or Ted, as he calls him – that he couldn’t tell the hospital staff he was employed by Ray. They decided they would resend that Bear was his dad.

Then Bear spotted a sign on the wall, naming the hospital trust. ‘Are we in Leeds?’ he wondered. Bear has no idea where in the country he’s being kept, least of all that Celia’s farm is so close to his own family home that his granddaughter Eve once spotted him out in a field. Seeing that they were in Leeds must have made him realise that he wasn’t as far away as he thought.

A doctor came to look at Bear’s wound and noticed he had several other injuries, including a broken arm that had never mended properly. Bear only manages the pain from this injury because Ray constantly gives him painkillers, to which he’s now addicted.
Ray Walters confronting a struggling Bear Wolf in Emmerdale.Ray is often seen looking out for Bear (Picture: ITV)
Between them, Ray and Bear managed to give a convincing explanation of what had happened. Ray said his dad was often a bit clumsy in the garden.

Then he realised it was the first time in his life he’d called anyone ‘dad.’ Bear mentioned his own lad, without naming Paddy (Dominic Brunt), and Ray talked about his childhood and how he’d been a different person when his grandfather was alive, before he’d been ‘adopted’ by Celia.

In touching scenes, Bear gave Ray some fatherly advice, telling him he should still follow his dreams.

‘What if my dream included a lady?’ Ray said, thinking of Laurel. He talked about his vision of being a stepdad for Laurel’s children. Bear encouraged him not to give up.

Celia’s stranglehold on her empire seems to be crumbling by the day. In the same episode Moira (Natalie J Robb) had discovered that Celia had been defrauding her, and Moira and Cain (Jeff Hordley) are planning to confront her.

Ray has already defied her about Bear and he defied her again and went to see Laurel, asking her for another chance, which she agreed to. And when Laurel branded Celia as ‘toxic,’ Ray didn’t argue.

Celia is already making plans to leave the area and start again somewhere else – but can she count on Ray to be by her side?

And Bear now knows he’s in the same county as his son and the rest of his family, and his thoughts are turning back to Paddy more often. Could Bear possibly be home by Christmas?

“GIVE HIM THE JOB — NOW!” Viewers Beg ITV to Hire Tom Read Wilson After What Looked Like a Secret Screen Test!

This Morning viewers have issued a desperate plea to ITV over I’m A Celebrity favourite Tom Read Wilson.

Fans believe the 2025 jungle star may be destined for a regular slot on the show, after a successful debut appearance as an Agony Uncle on today’s (December 11) episode.

Tom Read Wilson impresses This Morning viewers

Having made his name on reality TV show Celebs Go Dating, Tom seemed the perfect candidate to give the audience at home advice on their juicy Christmas dilemmas. The segment followed Tom reflecting on his time in the jungle with presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard.

This Morning viewers were certainly impressed with how he fared, with many cheering him on on social media.

One person tweeted: “Tom for Agony Uncle #thismorning.” “I’m pleased we’ve got a bit more Tom today,” somebody else also agreed.

A third likewise gushed: “It is SO wonderful to see @TomReadWilson on this morning right now. You are fabulous, Tom!”

Others also speculated over whether the star was being ‘screen-tested’ for future appearances on the programme.

One fan said: “I have to say Tom is really good with this advice, I can see him doing the This Morning competition next week.”

“Tom for Fridays #thismorning,” commented somebody else, calling for a presenting shake-up.

Meanwhile, another fan also asked: “Is this a screen test for future presenting opportunities for Tom Read Wilson #This Morning (I hope so).”

A fourth fan was keen to go a step further: “Even better, can we have Tom instead of Cat and Ben?”

After the final dilemma, Cat and Ben then quizzed Tom on whether he’d come back to play Agony Uncle again. Were they dropping hints, we wonder?!

Reform UK has bagged another by-election win that could pave the way for greater gains in Labour’s heartland.

Reform snatched victory from Labour in a Sunderland by-election this week in a dramatic swing, taking home 45.2 per cent of the vote.

Sir Keir Starmer’s party, meanwhile, slipped to third place in the Hetton ward by-election, with a share of just 22.7 per cent of the vote, falling behind an independent candidate who finished up on 25.6 per cent.

The results will come as a blow to Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, whose Houghton and Sunderland South constituency encompasses the Hetton ward.

Why the win is so significant

The seat is regarded as a ‘bellwether’ ahead of Sunderland City Council’s May elections.

Bellwether seats are constituencies where the local result tracks a wider voting trend.

Reacting to the by-election results, GB News’ deputy political editor, Tom Harwood, said: “I spoke to the candidate in this by-election on Wednesday.

“Sunderland goes to vote in May, and Reform were looking to the Hetton by-election for clues in terms of how that might go.

“Looks likely to be another Durham moment.”

    Bridget Phillipson and Nigel Farage

Reform swept to victory in the by-election held in Bridget Phillipson’s constituency

Mr Farage said it was a “huge result” for his party.

“Labour pushed into third place. Bridget Phillipson would lose her seat if this was repeated at the next election,” the Clacton MP wrote to X.

“No wonder Keir Starmer can’t stop attacking me!”

    Hetton, Sunderland

As set out in our analysis above, Reform stormed to victory in the Education Secretary’s consistency, with candidate Ian McKinley elected.

Reacting to his win, Mr McKinley said: “From the bottom of my heart, thank you to the residents of Hetton ward for putting your faith in me to represent you on Sunderland City Council.

“I will absolutely not let you down!Thank you also to my Reform colleagues, I will never forget all you have done for me, and I look forward to working with you all in May.”

    The full results:

    Reform: 45.2 per cent
    Independent: 25.6 per cent
    Labour: 22.7 per cent
    Lib Dem: 4.2 per cent
    Conservative: 2.3 per cent

    Ian McKinley

Reform candidate Ian McKinley (middle) took home the majority of votes in the by-election

    Good things come in twos

Reform marked a second by-election victory in the Hunstanton ward on King’s Lynn and West Norfolk council, filling a previously independent-held seat.

The election had been called following the resignation of long-time councillor Paul Beal due to ill health last month.

Reform candidate Fred Pidcock bagged 29.2 per cent of votes, followed by the Lib Dems with 25.6 per cent.

Labour, meanwhile, plummeted to last place, with 3.2 per cent.

    The full results:

    Reform: 29.2 per cent
    Lib Dems: 25.6 per cent
    Independent: 18.2 per cent
    Conservative: 17.8 per cent
    Independent: 6.1 per cent
    Labour: 3.2 per cent

    Fred Pidcock

Fred Pidcock bagged 29.2 per cent of votes in the Hunstanton ward by-election

    Barnoldswick, Lancashire

It was a Lib Dem hold in the Barnoldswick ward on Pendle Council in east Lancashire.

Sir Ed Davey’s party stormed ahead, with candidate Bryony Hartley winning almost 60 per cent of the votes

Reform meanwhile fell behind with 26.2 per cent, while Labour again came in last place.

The by-election was triggered after the previous representative, Mick Strickland, decided to stand down from his role.

The host called it the “right time to hand over the reins.” As she prepares for her final episodes on the iconic BBC dance show, speculation has been swirling about her next move.

According to Closer, sources claim the long-time host is already being courted by ITV, and the deal could be worth a seven-figure sum.

“There is serious interest,” the insider revealed. “ITV know they need warmth, credibility and connection. Tess and Vernon tick every box.”

The source added, “They’re charming, relatable and real. Viewers loved Richard [Madeley] and Judy [Finnigan] because their connection was genuine. Tess and Vernon have that same spark. They bring a wholesome energy. People trust them, and that’s gold dust.”

    Tess and Vernon

Tess and Vernon, 51, first met in 2001 and married two years later. They’ve since welcomed daughters Phoebe, 21, and Amber, 16.

Tess began hosting Strictly Come Dancing in 2004, alongside the late Sir Bruce Forsyth. She later became part of a beloved double act with Claudia Winkleman after Bruce stepped down in 2013.

Meanwhile, Vernon has fronted everything from All Star Family Fortunes to his own BBC Radio 2 show. He’s also no stranger to This Morning, having stepped in as a guest presenter. The new role, insiders say, could be a “big-time” comeback for him.

Current hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard have held down the This Morning fort since March 2024, following the resignations of Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield in 2023.

But reports suggest Cat may be considering stepping back, potentially opening the door for Tess and Vernon to take the reins.

Joe Sugg Sends Fans WILD Teasing ‘Secret’ New Show With Dianne  The clues are cryptic, the chemistry is undeniable — and the internet is already in meltdown. What are they cooking up?

Strictly Come Dancing lovebirds Joe Sugg and Dianne Buswell have been together for seven years after meeting on the show.

Earlier this year, Joe and Dianne announced the exciting news that they are expecting their first baby together. And they have been giving fans insights to the journey – even showing the baby’s nursery a few days ago.

But now, it looks like that’s not the only exciting venture, Joe has also announced they are currently working on a new show. And fans have been sent wild trying to work out what it will be.
Joe has revealed exciting news (Credit: YouTube)

    Joe Sugg teases new show

This entire month Joe Sugg is taking part in ‘Vlogmas’, a term used to describe when content creators post a vlog for every day as Christmas approaches.

But while it’s usually just snippets of his life with Dianne, last night’s vlog teased something even bigger – a new show surrounding him and Dianne.

Speaking to the camera, the 34-year-old said:”Just finished meeting number one of the day. A very, very exciting meeting. All I am going to say is that is for – and brace yourselves – a new show. Involving myself. And Dianne.”

However, that wasn’t all he was actually going to say, as he revealed a little bit more about the details later in the vlog.

He told viewers: “I have just been going through the itinerary for the show. I don’t want to keep it all a secret. But the one thing I do have here, which I had to do a double take at.

“It says, in brackets and capital letters, ‘Only Joe enters the mine close brackets’. It sounds terrifying because I am claustrophobic.”

So, while Joe didn’t give away what the new show involves, it definitely got fans excited.

What is Joe Sugg and Dianne Buswell new show about?

While they met on the hit TV show Strictly, the couple haven’t actually been on their own show together.

Five years ago, in 2020, the couple were supposed to go on a UK tour together. The tour was called, ‘The Joe and Dianne Show’ and was scheduled to take place during March and April in 2020.

They had explained that there would be a mix of comedy, chats, and of course some dancing! But unfortunately, it never got to happen. The Covid-19 pandemic happened, so Joe and Dianne were forced to postpone. However, a year later, the show was cancelled completely.

So, while we don’t have any more information on the Joe Sugg and Dianne Buswell show just yet, fans have been speculating if it will be similar to that – or if we could more of a behind-the-scenes look.

One fan penned on X: “Joe and Dianne are doing a new show together!! I wonder if it’s a dance show like how their 2020 tour was meant to be. Or if it is something very different!”

Another added: “No way. Joe and Dianne show 2.0.”

“Say what? A new show for Joe and Dianne? Hell yeah. This is exciting” a third wrote.

An excited fan commented on the vlog: “Excited about the new show with Dianne. I can’t wait to hear more about it.”

“Oh I can’t wait to hear about the show. Will we get to see baby Sugg, I wonder?” another asked.

Hopefully they give us more information soon because it sounds amazing!”

“TELL ME IT’S NOT TRUE”: THE NOLANS RETURN FOR EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE AFTER LINDA’S DEATH!

The Nolans are preparing for a deeply emotional comeback as they reunite for their first public performance since the loss of their sister Linda. The concert, held in aid of Weston Park Cancer Charity, will take place on October 4 at Sheffield City Hall.

Sisters Denise, Maureen and Anne will step onto the stage for Simply The Best, a star-studded fundraising night also featuring Layton Williams, Dr Ranj, Strictly’s Janette Manrara, Hayley Tamaddon, Sam Bailey, Zoe Tyler and Rustie Lee.

The trio will perform Tell Me It’s Not True from the musical Blood Brothers—a song with poignant significance. Maureen and Denise once appeared in the West End production alongside their late sisters Bernie and Linda, setting a Guinness World Record at the time. Anne admitted that this will be her first time singing the number, making the performance especially moving.

The evening will close with the group’s timeless hit I’m In The Mood For Dancing. In a twist of fate, it will also be the first time Denise has ever sung the track, as she left the group before its release in 1979. “I’ve never sung I’m In The Mood For Dancing before,” Denise explained, “so to finally perform it alongside my sisters, and for such a meaningful reason, feels very special. Cancer has touched our family in the most devastating way, so being able to raise money for others going through it means the world to us.”

Anne echoed the sentiment: “This will be my first time performing Tell Me It’s Not True, which makes it incredibly emotional. To sing it with Denise and Maureen, knowing that Bernie and Linda once performed it too, will be such a powerful moment for us as sisters.”

The Nolans, whose family has been marked by tragedy with four sisters battling cancer, are proud to use this reunion to support vital cancer causes. Linda, who died in January from pneumonia after living with incurable breast cancer, remains at the heart of this tribute.

The sisters won’t stop there. On October 11, they will appear at the Talking Pictures Festival of Film & TV Roadshow at Hebden Bridge Picture House. Hosted by Sherrie Hewson and Mike Read, they’ll join a special Q&A reflecting on their extraordinary 50-year career. As Maureen put it: “We’ve had such a varied career in showbiz and our amazing fans have been there every step of the way. This will be the first time we really look back and celebrate our story.”

‘COVER-UP OR CHAOS?’ Leaked Documents Spark Westminster Panic After Robinson’s Explosive Claims 🔥 Robinson alleges City Hall ran a hidden strategy to protect senior figures and steer public perception. Critics urge caution over unverified material — yet allies are demanding answers, and the political fallout is already spiralling.

In a Stunning Political Unveiling, Tommy Robinson Exposes Sadiq Khan’s Alleged Secret Scheme to Manipulate Public Perception – Are We Witnessing the Collapse of Trust in London’s Leadership? Discover the Shocking Details Behind Robinson’s Leaked Documents that Claim to Reveal a Covert Plan to Control Information During Critical Times. As the Controversy Escalates, Will Khan’s Silence Lead to Political Ruin or Will the Truth Emerge from the Shadows?

In a bombshell revelation sending shockwaves through British politics, controversial figure Tommy Robinson has exposed what he claims are damning documents implicating London Mayor Sadiq Khan in a clandestine scheme to suppress politically sensitive information.

Robinson, known for his incendiary activism and fearless whistleblowing, came forward with a trove of confidential files that, according to him, reveal an orchestrated effort by Khan’s office to manipulate public perception. This covert plan, described as a “communications strategy” to manage and disguise critical details, threatens to upend trust in one of the UK’s most significant political figures.

The leak’s timing couldn’t be more charged. While media attention was diverted elsewhere, Robinson alleges, behind the scenes, a carefully crafted narrative was being deployed to conceal an explosive policy shift—details of which are now under intense scrutiny.

Instantly going live, Robinson brandished physical copies of the documents, highlighting key passages and declaring, “They didn’t want this out. They thought no one would find out.” His broadcast ignited a firestorm, sparking feverish debate across social media platforms, where supporters call it a monumental exposé and detractors dismiss it as politically motivated theatrics.

Khan’s office swiftly responded, labeling the claims “pure political theater” and asserting the mayor’s commitment to transparency. Yet a notable absence of outright denial regarding the documents’ existence fanned the flames of suspicion even higher.

Inside sources paint a murky picture. The alleged internal communications plan is said to involve controlling what information reaches the public, potentially rewriting narratives around contentious decisions. Critics argue this confirms long-held fears that political insiders prioritize image management over accountability.

The clash between Robinson and Khan is more than a personal feud; it resonates deeply across the nation. Sadiq Khan, a globally recognized figure and London’s first Muslim mayor, has his political future hanging in the balance, while Robinson’s supporters hail him as a fearless exposer of hidden truths.

Social media reactions have been electric: “If even half of this is accurate, heads must roll,” one user thundered, while another lamented, “This only deepens the crisis of trust in our leaders.” Conversely, many defended Khan, accusing Robinson of exploiting timing ahead of crucial elections.

The political fallout is swift and growing. Opposition parties demand full disclosure of the materials to restore public confidence. Even a Labour insider privately conceded that transparency would be the wisest course, warning the current defensive posture only raises more doubts.

What makes this saga even more riveting is Robinson’s tantalizing hint that this leak is merely the first chapter. He has promised further revelations that could deepen the controversy, signaling a protracted battle that shows no sign of abating.

eanwhile, Khan’s team seems intent on weathering the storm through terse statements and a low profile, opting not to engage in heated public debates or detailed clarifications—an approach some critics claim only intensifies the atmosphere of mistrust.

Political analysts suggest that silence might be a strategic misstep. As one former adviser put it, “Failing to fully address these allegations hands Robinson a powerful platform and feeds conspiracy theories.”

At its core, this confrontation underscores a critical and unsettling question: Who truly controls the narrative in contemporary politics? And more importantly, can the public rely on leaders to be forthright with information that shapes their lives?

As the story unfolds, it is clear the stakes have never been higher. The very fabric of political credibility in London—and potentially beyond—is under serious threat.

With Robinson poised to release more documents and Khan’s office bracing for sustained pressure, the next days and weeks could redefine political accountability in Britain’s capital.

One thing is certain: This explosive saga is far from over. The nation watches, waiting to see if the truth will finally emerge from the shadows or be buried under layers of spin and denial.

Stay tuned as this major story develops. The consequences of these allegations could reshape the political landscape in ways few anticipated—and the full extent of what Khan’s office sought to conceal may only now be coming to light.

Christmas Week: 15 Huge Twists (22–26 December) | Emmerdale

Emmerdale is pulling out all the stops this Christmas, delivering a festive week packed with danger, heartbreak, romance and haunting revelations. From a terrifying disappearance on Christmas Day to long-simmering grudges finally boiling over, the village faces a holiday season that is anything but peaceful. As secrets resurface and loyalties are tested, these 15 dramatic moments promise to leave lasting consequences well into the New Year.

. War Breaks Out Between Ross and Aaron

The festive calm is shattered as Ross reacts explosively to Aaron and Robert’s decision to bring Seb back to the village. For Ross, this isn’t just about logistics—it’s deeply personal. Letting go of Rebecca’s son was one of the most painful sacrifices he’s ever made, and the thought of seeing Seb every day reopens wounds that never truly healed. His unresolved grief quickly turns to anger, placing him directly at odds with Aaron. What begins as a bitter disagreement soon escalates into open hostility, with neither man willing to compromise.

    2. Robert and Aaron Come Under Attack

Tensions intensify when Aaron discovers his car windscreen smashed. Convinced Ross is responsible, Aaron’s fury pushes him dangerously close to retaliation. However, cracks appear in this theory when evidence suggests Ross may be innocent. Instead, a far more sinister possibility emerges: someone else is watching, lurking in the shadows. The sense of being targeted creates an atmosphere of creeping dread, signalling that this is only the beginning of a calculated campaign against Robert and Aaron.

    3. Robert Makes a Chilling Discovery

When pot plants outside the flat are deliberately set on fire, Aaron once again points the finger at Ross. But Ross has an airtight alibi, forcing Robert to look elsewhere. As the truth dawns on him, the realisation is genuinely unsettling—there is a dangerous enemy at play, far more methodical and threatening than they imagined. Robert now faces a race against time: can he uncover the truth before this unseen threat destroys his future with Aaron?

    4. Robert Disappears on Christmas Day

Christmas Day should bring unity and joy, with villagers gathering outside The Woolpack, mulled wine flowing and festive cheer filling the air. But the warmth evaporates when Robert abruptly leaves on a mysterious errand. When he fails to return, panic grips Aaron and Victoria. As hours pass with no sign of him, fear turns to dread. Robert’s disappearance casts a dark, ominous shadow over what should be the happiest day of the year.

    5. Paddy’s Heartbreak Over Bear

Elsewhere, Paddy is struggling with his own Christmas pain. All he wants is his dad, Bear, and the ache of his absence is overwhelming. The emotional contrast is stark when viewers see Bear spending Christmas at Celia’s farm, trapped in bleak conditions alongside the other forced workers. Paddy’s loneliness mirrors Bear’s silent suffering, underlining the emotional cost of their separation.

    6. Bear Becomes a Voice of Reason

Bear’s compassion shines through when he learns that Celia and Rhona plan to leave the village, sparking fears that he’ll be abandoned. During a heartfelt conversation, Rhona opens up about the devastation of losing Laurel. In an unexpected turn, Bear offers wisdom and encouragement, urging Rhona to take a chance on happiness while she still can. It’s a powerful moment that highlights Bear’s quiet strength and moral clarity.

    7. Laurel and Rhona Reignite Their Spark

Inspired by Bear’s words, Rhona reaches out to Laurel, inviting her for an early Christmas tea. The thoughtful gesture and festive spread visibly touch Laurel, and their chemistry is impossible to ignore. Hope flickers as Rhona dares to imagine they might still share Christmas together. Yet with Celia’s controlling presence looming, the potential reunion feels heartbreakingly fragile.

    8. Kim Rejects Joe’s Peace Offering

At Home Farm, Kim is reeling after learning the truth about her accident. When Lydia admits that she and Sam were responsible, Joe is furious. Kim responds by cancelling her family Christmas meal, bracing herself for a solitary holiday. When Joe attempts to extend an olive branch, she shuts him down coldly. Her bitterness runs deep, and forgiveness seems further away than ever.

    9. Kim Suffers a Dangerous Fall

Kim’s fierce independence proves costly when she suffers a fall and becomes stranded on the floor. Her cries for help bring Lydia rushing to the house, much to Kim’s frustration. Even as Kim orders her to leave, Lydia refuses, determined to stay and protect her. The moment underscores the complicated, emotionally charged bond between them.

    10. Kim Is Haunted by the Past

Joe makes one final attempt to reconcile, hoping to spend Christmas Day together, but Kim turns him away yet again. Alone at Home Farm, she is confronted by photographs from past Christmases—snapshots of happier times that now feel painfully distant. Surrounded by memories and regret, Kim is forced to face the stark reality of her isolation in a haunting, emotional reckoning.

    11. A Romantic Proposal Brings Hope

Amid the chaos, love finds a way. One villager gets down on one knee in a heartfelt proposal, offering a rare moment of optimism. The question of whether their partner will say yes hangs in the air, along with the tantalising possibility of wedding bells in 2026.

    12. Charity and Vanessa’s Tense Christmas

Charity is thrown into turmoil when she’s forced to spend Christmas Day with Vanessa. With alcohol flowing freely, Charity fears that Vanessa might reveal their recent intimacy. Later, Charity snuggles up with Mackenzie, unaware that a looming threat could soon tear her world apart.

    13. Sarah and Jacob Dream of the Future

Sarah and Jacob are filled with excitement as they plan their gender reveal party, brimming with hope and anticipation. However, their joy is short-lived when an unexpected setback leaves Jacob frustrated and angry. Suddenly, their celebration—and their future—feels uncertain.

    14. A Quiet Moment of Remembrance

At the graveyard, Charles, Claudette and Jimmy come together to honour loved ones they’ve lost. United in grief, they reflect on how absence has shaped Christmases past and present. It’s a subdued yet deeply moving reminder of loss, resilience and the enduring power of memory.

    15. Marlon Senses Trouble Ahead

As the week draws to a close, a life-changing decision looms for one villager, while Marlon is plagued by an uneasy feeling that something isn’t right. His instincts suggest that not everyone will find peace under the Christmas tree—and he may be right.

With danger closing in, relationships hanging by a thread and secrets threatening to explode, Emmerdale’s Christmas week promises high drama and emotional fallout. As joy and despair collide, one thing is certain: this festive season will leave the village forever changed.

  • Pauline Collins said she felt as though she’d had her “heart ripped out” and lived with guilt and regret over giving up her daughter every single day of her life.

Pauline Collins said she felt as though she’d had her “heart ripped out” and lived with guilt and regret over giving up her daughter every single day of her life.

In 1963, at the age of 22, Pauline Collins was a struggling young actress working in Ireland when she discovered she was pregnant. After a painful breakup with her then boyfriend, she found herself alone and frightened, unable to tell her parents — both devout Catholic school teachers. With no financial security or support, she turned to a convent in Killarney, where the nuns cared for her throughout the pregnancy.

Pauline spent six weeks looking after her newborn daughter, Louise, before making the heartbreaking decision to give her up for adoption, believing it was the only way to give her baby a stable and secure future. She would later describe it as “the most awful thing I ever had to do.”

Pauline wrote about the experience in her powerful 1992 memoir Letter to Louise, a heartbreaking yet hopeful account of her journey towards forgiveness and reunion.

“I had her adopted when she was six weeks old,” she said. “It was the most awful thing ever to do. It broke my heart. It was like having a piece of your heart ripped out. I think it floors you for the rest of your life.”

“I remember the last time I saw you,” she wrote in her memoir. “We were about six feet apart. Every day of my life I’ve relived that moment, replayed each second like a book of flicker pictures, clinging frame by frame to the last images of you.”

Pauline later admitted she had kept her secret for years, only telling her parents five years after the adoption.

“They felt very let down because I hadn’t been able to confide in them,” she said. “But they understood that I did it for what I then thought were good motives — really stupid motives, trying to protect everybody.”

The actress explained her reasons in painfully honest terms:

“My parents were teachers at Catholic schools and I hadn’t a penny in the world. I thought it would be harder for a girl — people would say she’d go the same way as her mother. For that reason, I decided on adoption.”

Despite her career success — first in Upstairs, Downstairs, later in Shirley Valentine — Pauline carried the memory with her always.

“Why did I give you away?” she wrote. “Even now, I feel a blow in the solar plexus when I consider that question. It was like my soul was punched out through my throat.”

Then, two decades later, came an extraordinary moment of healing. When Louise turned 21, she reached out to her birth mother. Their reunion was everything Pauline had hoped for.

“She’s been quite extraordinarily mature and compassionate towards me,” Pauline said at the time. “Even in her first letter, she gave me the option of not replying, which I think at 21 is very mature. We slipped back into each other’s lives with unbelievable ease.”

By then, Pauline had married actor John Alderton in 1969, and together they raised three children — Nicholas, Kate, and Richard. Her daughter Kate once told her she wished she had a sister. “Two weeks later,” Pauline recalled with a smile, “she had one.”

Their story — one of heartbreak, secrecy, and eventual reunion — became one of the most moving real-life tales ever shared by a British actress.

In her own words, Pauline said she always knew the day would come:

“I knew we would be reunited one day. I didn’t know when, but I knew it would have to be at her instigation.”

Pauline Collins, who passed away a few days aged 85, leaves behind not only a remarkable acting legacy but also a story of love, courage, and forgiveness that touched hearts far beyond the screen.

A mother’s love, once lost — found again.
