The Duchess of Sussex was on holiday in New Zealand with her then-husband Trevor Engelson, and they had rented a campervan to drive around the beautiful country over Christmas and New Year. They visited remote glaciers, seal colonies and wineries, and swam with dolphins before reaching Akaroa – a tiny village surrounding a dead volcano near Christchurch – and stopped at a campsite for the night. Meghan was having a shower when she suddenly realised a 13-year-old boy had crawled under the stall and was trying to steal her underwear.

She grabbed her towel and shouted: “Where is your mother?”

Eventually she told his parents about it, who were “mortified”, but she said the boy was “harmless”.

Meghan described the experience on New Zealand radio when promoting her role in the TV drama Suits.

She said: “When we got into the campsite, they had nice areas to take a shower.

“I was washing my hair and I hear something and I open the shower curtain and there’s this 13-year-old boy who had crawled under the stall and was trying to steal my underwear.

 

“I grabbed my towel and I had shampoo in my hair and I yelled, ‘Where’s your mother?’

“I found his parents, who were mortified, of course. I can laugh about it now but at the time I was so shaken up.

“He was just a little prankster, he was harmless ‒ probably bored to tears with his family.”

However, the boy reportedly managed to get a glimpse of her in the nude.

Meghan added: “To this day, oh my God, that kid will be sitting and home going ‘that’s the girl from Suits, I saw her naked.”

 

Of course, now he will be able to boast that he saw Prince Harry’s wife in the shower.

Meghan decided to go on this holiday after it was recommended to her by Gabriel Macht, one her co-stars on Suits.

Gabriel told her how he and his wife loved campervan holidays, and all about how amazing their trip to New Zealand was.

Meghan decided she wanted the same experience.

She and Trevor hiked over glaciers, visited wineries in Marlborough and rented a beach house for a few days.

It turned out to be one of her favourite ever holidays, despite the Peeping Tom incident.

Andrew Morton said in his 2018 book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’ that Meghan and Gabriel got talking about it during a group get-together with her castmates in Toronto.

“After listening to him wax lyrical about a trip to New Zealand, Meghan decided to follow suit.

She and Trevor too hired a campervan and spent two weeks driving around New Zealand’s sparsely populated south island.”

Meghan’s trip to New Zealand is believed to be her honeymoon, because she and Trevor got married that year, in 2011.

However, the couple’s marriage was not to last and they were divorced by August 2013.

Meghan moved on to date restaurateur Cory Vitiello in Toronto for two years before meeting Prince Harry in 2016 and the rest is royal history.

Meanwhile, Trevor dated Bethenny Frankel of The Real Housewives of New York City before meeting dietician Tracey Kurland in 2017, who he married last year.

It appears that Prince Harry was reminding his wife of the upcoming anthem to ensure she was prepared and facing the right direction by telling her to “turn around” twice, when she tried to turn her back on the crowds below. For Harry, maintaining protocol and smooth public appearances were taught from a young age.

The video gained huge traction on social media and has recently resurfaced as the Royal Family prepares for Trooping the Colour 2024 to mark King Charles’s official birthday on Saturday, June 15.

Footage shows the Sussexes are on the balcony during Trooping the Colour 2019 and Meghan Markle could be seen turning around to chat with her husband, just before the National Anthem was played.

As the National Anthem began playing Harry could be seen telling Meghan to “turn around” when she tried to engage with her husband and initiate a conversation.

The Duchess appeared to look quite upset when this interaction happened but much has been read into the interaction over the years, with some saying Harry was merely trying to look out for his wife, who may have been unaccustomed to the protocol.

Judi James, a professional body language expert, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk at the time to explain how Meghan may have been feeling at this moment.

She said: “It’s easy to forget how much pressure Meghan might have felt herself to be under, coming from the US which has no Royal Family, and immersing herself in both her husband’s family and the more formal side of his lifestyle.

“So events like the Trooping of the Colour might have even come as a bit of a shock to a woman who claims to have initially had little knowledge of skills like the curtsey.”

Judi added: “Her [Meghan Markle’s] blink rate does seem to have speeded though, which is a gesture that can hint at either some upset or irritation.”

She said: “During the hugely awkward and painful Commonwealth Service that was Harry and Meghan’s last public appearance before they quit the UK, Edward and Sophie seemed to have been enlisted to act as ice-breakers and air-bags between the Sussexes and the Cambridges.

“But that was before the Oprah interview and Harry’s book Spare wreaked their damage.

“This cold stare or glower might possibly have preceded a warm social smile of greeting from Sophie but, even if it did, there’s a stronger possibility that she was letting her authentic feelings be known first.”

Relations between Harry and his extended family did not appear to have improved much the following year, when he travelled back to Windsor for the funeral of his grandfather, Prince Philip.

 

Ms James shared her analysis of the event: “Harry was walking out of Philip’s funeral service alone and had to pass Sophie and her daughter on the way out.

“It was hard not to feel some sympathy for Harry, who was also about to have the famous awkward chat with his brother William that Kate very carefully choreographed.

“It might have been expected that Sophie would, like Kate, take some steps to break the ice, but she didn’t appear to acknowledge Harry at all.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle received a mixed reception when they flew back to London for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022.

Grant Harrold, a former butler to King Charles, told the New York Post: “I’d never say never, it’s always possible that one day he might want to come home, it’s possible that he might buy [a property] here if he wanted to come over [more] and Meghan didn’t want to come over.

“Meghan doesn’t really have any family here as such, all her family are in the States and that’s where Harry has decided he wants to set up his home.”

The unexpected revelation came from the Duke of Sussex himself, when recalling a conversation he had with his father about Meghan’s future in the royal family in his bombshell memoir, Spare.

When recalling a conversation he and his father had, King Charles reportedly asked his son, “Does she want to carry on working?” to which Prince Harry replied, “Say again?” King Charles then reportedly replied, “Does she want to keep on acting?” which led Prince Harry to say, “Oh. I mean, I don’t know. I wouldn’t think so. I expect she’ll want to be with me, doing the job, you know, which would rule out Suits… since they film in… Toronto.”

King Charles then allegedly said, “Hmm. I see. Well, darling boy, you know there’s not enough money to go around.” Prince Harry then wrote in his memoir that he “stared” at his father after he said this, and then thought, “What was he banging on about? He explained. Or tried to. ‘I can’t pay for anyone else. I’m already having to pay for your brother and Catherine.’”

Despite all the confessions in Spare and in the Netflix Harry & Meghan docuseries which aired in December last year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are still currently expected to attend King Charles’ coronation at Westminster Abbey on May 6th, which also happens to be their son Archie’s fourth birthday, even though many royal experts have warned that their attendance could be a distraction.

A royal insider reportedly told the Daily Mail that the Sussexes will “definitely” be at the coronation, but should not expect any apologies or reconciliation talks. “Members of the family have told me that both Harry and Meghan will definitely come. They fully expect that,” the insider said, adding, “And they should realize that there is only one subject that many members of the royal family will be willing to discuss… and that’s the weather.”

Another insider previously told The Independent that Prince Harry and Meghan would of course be invited, but noted that “it would be very hard” for them to be there “given everything that has been said.” Another source told The Mirror that Prince Harry doesn’t want to get on a plane to the U.K. until he has a summit with his father, King Charles, and brother, Prince William.

“Harry has been very clear and his position hasn’t wavered – he isn’t going to come if he feels the atmosphere will be as toxic as it was during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and funeral,” the source said. “He’s said he wants to reconcile with his family and it’s their call, but so far nothing has changed.”
