Although this is totally normal and nothing to be ashamed about, there’s no denying that for many losing hair can also have a huge negative impact on confidence.

But if you’ve tried every product on the high street and nothing seems to be working, fear not, as one expert, Luke Hersheson, has come to rescue with nine easy hacks.

According to the whizz, who’s worked with some of the biggest names in the showbiz industry, including Dua Lipa and Victoria Beckham, it’s all about creating the illusion of thickness – and there are plenty of simple ways to achieve this.

Don’t rely on shampoo and conditioner

Most beauty lovers will probably assume that your journey towards thick hair starts with volume-boosting products – however, you should be more concerned about what you don’t do at this showering stage.

“Using the wrong conditioner, or too much of it, can weigh hair down and make it feel flatter, which in turn will make it appear thinner,” he said, chatting to Vogue.

“I’d advise against using hair masks and heavy conditioner, to help maintain volume and body.”

Time for a haircut

One of the keys to thick-looking hair is, of course, a visit to the hairdressers for a much-needed snip.

As noted by Luke, ”a decent haircut is the foundation to any form of styling”.

”You need shape and a graphic cut to be there first, otherwise it’s a bit like a building without foundations – and badly cut hair won’t defy gravity, because its weight will pull it down,” the pro said.

Long VS short pieces

Whether you’re opting for a grown-out fringe or slight feathering to frame the face, incorporating some shorter hair at the front will also help make hair look thicker.

Luke explained that this simple change will instantly elevate the feeling of thickness – compared to something ”flat, straight and curtain-like”.

Make use of hair filler

It’s common to struggle with thinning hair around the temples, as well as the sides of the head, particularly once you start ageing.

For this, Luke shared a rather simple, yet effective, solution – using filler hair pieces or a patch of extensions at sides that can thicken it out a little.

According to the guru, a number of big stars wear then when attending the red carpet – ”and you’d never know”.

Just as easy is changing your parting and flip your locks over to the other side.

Luke noted that ”a middle parting will always make hair look flatter” and flipping it over is a super easy way to add more volume to your head.

Tease hair at the crown

Backcombing used to be all the rage in the 80s and 90s when many of attended wild disco parties – and if you’re looking to add a little oomph back into your hair, it’s time to return to the iconic decades.

The age-old technique works wonders when trying to create the illusion of thicker hair – but Luke advised to ditch the regular comb with a mixed bristle brush.

For this, the guru instructed to hold the hair up and push the brush downwards just behind the roots at the crown – ”it creates a Brigitte Bardot effect, and helps frame the eyes”.

Blow dry upwards

Drying your locks after showering is essential, especially if you’re heading to bed afterwards – as your hair is at its most fragile and prone to damage when wet.

But when you blow dry the hair, make sure you direct the airflow underneath the root and upwards, instead of blowing down on tops of the head.

It’s little things like this, Luke noted, that can ”make a real difference”.

Experiment with colour

It’s not just the cut and style that can instantly give the illusion of thick hair – well-placed highlights and the right colour work just as well, Luke said.

The hair pro explained that when you add texture or contrast with colour, you will notice more depth – and this, in turn, makes the hair appear full and lifted.
