David Beckham is getting candid about one of his most buzzed about hair changes.

The Netflix docuseries Beckham delved into several parts of the former soccer player’s life — including the dramatic story of what happened behind the scenes when he got a buzz cut in 2000.

“I had a hairdresser at the time called Tyler. I said to him, ‘I’m gonna cut my hair’ and he was like, ‘Are you sure? You really want to do that?,’ ” Beckham explained in the third episode of the docuseries.

He said his Manchester United Coach Sir Alex Ferguson confronted him about the change ahead of their match against Leicester City in March 2000. “And [Ferguson] said, ‘David take the cap off.’ And I said, ‘No.’”

“Stubbornness,” Ferguson recalled. “And then I said, ‘Oh well.’”

When Beckham debuted his new buzz cut on the field during the game, the commenters noted, “the blonde locks have gone” and “the sight of the skinhead will take a bit of getting used to.”

Though the former soccer player noted: “I never did it to create attention. I’m not that person.”

Despite his intentions, the new hairdo — along with his continued success on the field — drew lots of attention from his fans across the U.K. Hundreds of fans wanted to see his new look for the first time and footage showed them standing in long lines for an autograph.

“When David Beckham shaved his head, I honestly thought a member of my family had died. Because my phone went off.” said James Clarke, a Manchester paparazzi. “The panic in people’s voices that this… We haven’t got it documented yet.”

He noted that it became a huge pop culture moment in the U.K., as other men and even his young fans were hoping to become just like him.

“Literally kids, ‘I want to be David Beckham, I want to shave my head. And schools were having to write in, ‘No shaving of heads,’ “ Clarke said.

Victoria Beckham, 49, recalled in the docuseries that her husband shaving his head was a moment where he “starts going from a boy to a man.”

“And it’s only natural that you’ll start flexing your muscles right? And don’t all kids rebel against their parents?,” she said, alluding to Sir Alex’s role as Beckham’s secondary father figure.

“He was so open,” said director Fisher Stevens about Beckham. “He’s like, ‘I’m ready. I want to tell my story before someone else does.’ And then I started doing research and I was like, ‘Jesus, this guy’s life is nuts. Nuts.’ I had no idea.”

David and Victoria Beckham’s 4 Kids: All About Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper

While David’s mother still lives in England, the athlete, his wife, and his kids split their time between the U.K. and Miami, where he owns the Inter Miami soccer club.

The family has traveled to different locations over the holidays, spending time together in the Bahamas in Miami in the lead-up to Christmas.

On Dec. 21, David and Victoria’s son, Brooklyn Beckham, 24, shared a video on Instagram of the family’s trip to the Bahamas, which featured a sweet clip of his wife, Nicola Peltz, dancing with Victoria, 49, and some other clips of the group enjoying the tropical getaway. Brooklyn tagged his parents, wife, younger brother Cruz, and sister Harper in the post. His brother, Romeo, was notably absent.

Brooklyn wrote in the caption, “Miss you, Romeo,” acknowledging his brother’s absence from the trip.

One day later, Victoria shared a family photo of the same group, this time in Miami — and sporting matching pajamas. “Santa came early in Miami!!! 🎄x I love u all so much xxxx,” she captioned the photos, which included a group shot of her, David, Cruz, Brooklyn, Nicola, and Harper, as well as a shot of just her and David with their oldest child, and a solo shot of the couple.

Romeo, who plays soccer full-time in the U.K., following in his dad’s footsteps, was also missing from this gathering. “We miss u,” the fashion designer captioned the photos and tagged her 21-year-old son.

In one hilarious video, the former Spice Girls star revealed that one of her Christmas gifts to her husband was several chickens for their coop.

“What do you get @davidbeckham for Christmas??” she captioned the video, which saw David feeding the animals, which Victoria called “Beckham chickens.”

Victoria Beckham’s Instagram account has been hacked — by her husband David Beckham!

On Saturday, May 11, the soccer star, 49, posted a video and photo on his beauty mogul wife’s account, taking her millions of followers through his morning routine, which featured a cleanser, serum and moisturizer from Victoria’s eponymous beauty brand.

“THE DAVID BECKHAM MORNING SKINCARE ROUTINE,” the caption of the video began.

“My wife recently launched a cleansing duo, I like to use the @VictoriaBeckhamBeauty DAILY LACTIC ACID GEL CLEANSER. I then follow this by combining the @VictoriaBeckhamBeauty POWER SERUM with the @VictoriaBeckhamBeauty PRIMING MOISTURISER,” David, 49, continued. “That’s my skincare routine … how did I do @VictoriaBeckham? 😘 – DB x.”

The businessman, who was shirtless in the video, explained that Victoria, 50, nudges him about keeping up with his skincare.

“So, my wife will be very happy right now because I’m about to do the Victoria Beckham daily lactic acid gel cleanser,” David began narrating the video. “She’s always trying to get me to cleanse my face so… why not?”

The athlete said the product “smells good” and “feels good.”

“Let’s see how good it looks, or how good I look,” he continued, before washing the cleanser off of his face.

David joked that Victoria will probably tell him he didn’t leave the cleanser on long enough before saying that he actually does mix his wife’s serum with her moisturizer product and put it on his face every day.

“It makes a huge difference, especially when you’ve been traveling.” he said as he was applying the mixture.

He raved that his wife’s brand has “the best products,” before joking that the serum and moisturizer mixture “also doubles up as hand cream.”

“That will probably get edited out,” he joked with a cheeky smile.

A second post on Victoria’s Instagram grid featured a photo of David shirtless and laughing as he looked away from the camera while holding the Victoria Beckham Beauty products.

David Beckham is honoring his wife Victoria Beckham with some new ink.

“I’ve just had ‘Posh’ done … any of the tattoos I’ve got are of the family,” he told The Sun in a story published Friday. A recent close-up photo of the soccer star’s hand revealed the word “Posh” written in cursive on the lower part of his middle finger, right next to the finger on which he wears a gold wedding band.

The new tattoo is of course a nod to Victoria’s pop star past as Posh Spice of the girl band Spice Girls. David may have been inspired by his son Cruz, who got his own “Posh” tattoo on his arm in February to honor his mom, 49. On Sept. 3, the tattoo artist Certified Letter Boy shared black-and-white photos on his Instagram showing the 18-year-old’s forearm with the word “Posh” written in cursive.

When David was named “Sexiest Man Alive” by PEOPLE in 2015, he explained more about the placement and meaning of some of his tattoos.

The doting dad said that on his left shoulder there is a reclining angel with the motto “in the face of adversity.” He had Brooklyn’s name tattooed on his lower back after his eldest child’s 1999 birth. The names Romeo and Cruz bracket a large angel, and Harper’s name is tattooed on his neck.

David also addressed concerns about how he would look with all that ink as he grew older. “Many people have said to me, ‘When you’re 60, how is it gonna look?’ ” he said to PEOPLE at the time. “I’m not even worried about it.”

The actress shared a photo with Joanne and her mother-in-law Sandra on her Instagram Story, writing how much she missed her aunt and adding, “can’t wait to see you soon!”

In 2017, Joanne began dating former Big Brother contestant Kris Donnelly. The couple later welcomed their first child together, daughter Peggy, on Dec. 8, 2017.

Beckham introduced his niece Peggy to his fans on social media, writing, “Welcome to the world little Peggy ❤️ So proud of my little sis and congrats @krissydonners #Daddy such a beautiful family #prouduncle,” alongside two photos of him with the newborn.

However, six months after Peggy was born, Joanne and Donnelly split, the Daily Mail reported in June 2018.

Older sister Lynne has three children, Freddie, Georgina and Josh, from her previous marriage to Every, and younger sister Joanne has one daughter with her former partner Donnelly.

When Beckham’s niece Peggy was just 7 weeks old, Joanne shared a cute video of Peggy sporting matching hairstyles with the soccer legend, joking that he copied her look. “L O V E . M Y . Beckham also showed off his love for his young niece on her first birthday in 2018. He captioned a heartwarming photo of the uncle-niece pair, “Happy 1st Birthday to this gorgeous little one… Cannot believe Peggy is 1 already… Hope she has the most amazing day and Jo, don’t give her too much cake, she is still a little young 😁.”

According to the Daily Mail, Beckham also became a great uncle in 2018 when Lynne’s daughter Georgina gave birth to a baby girl around Christmastime.

Victoria and David Beckham don’t do anything casually. Case in point: their Instagram posts celebrating their 25th anniversary.

The couple, who got married on July 4, 1999, shared separate heartfelt posts to one another on July 4. Victoria, 50, shared a series of photos from the couple’s wedding celebrations and prep all those years ago. In her Instagram caption, she detailed what all the images showcased — with cheeky comments.

The former Spice Girl’s post began with a sweet photo of her and her then husband-to-be as they gave their reception thrones a whirl. In another photo, Victoria is seen beaming widely for the camera as she sits on the throne ahead of the wedding. She also shared a couple of photos documenting how they transported the luxe chairs via plane to the celebration.

“@DavidBeckham and I testing our iconic thrones for size,” she wrote in the caption. “Clearly, I loved mine from the start!

The fashion designer also shared a sweet photo taken on a private plane when their now 25-year-old Brooklyn was still small enough to sit on his dad’s lap. In the snap, David, 49, his mother Sandra and Victoria’s brother and sister, Christian and Louise, are all onboard as well.

“Flying in style,” she wrote. “Plenty of leg room as you can see 😂.”

She also shared a cheeky photo of David sitting shirtless at a kitchen table, writing his vows on a notepad, and she joked in the caption that he was “looking very concentrated!”

The carousel continued with photos of Victoria in her dress fittings, including her Vera Wang satin, strapless corseted ballgown and her iconic purple reception dress.

In addition to sharing the video, he posted a series of Instagram Stories commemorating the day, showing off the couple’s preparation for the wedding, along with their son Brooklyn’s prep.

These posts follow the already epic post that the couple shared on July 3 where the two of them slipped back into their iconic purple wedding reception outfits for an Instagram post.

“Look what we found…” the couple wrote on Instagram.

It’s hard to say whether or not it’s the original outfits, but the bold purple suit and body-hugging dress with floral accents look exactly the same as the Antonio Berardi looks that they rocked for their big day in 1999.

To modernize the looks for their 25th anniversary, Victoria wore silver stilettos that laced up her calves and wore her long brown hair down — a contrast to her short haircut from her wedding day.

David, on the other hand, is rocking many more tattoos in his updated photo — and far fewer highlights. Other than that, his styling is quite similar. He completed his suit with matching purple shoes and an affectionate look for his wife.

The rise (and rise) of padel: How rapidly growing racket sport beloved by David Beckham, Jurgen Klopp and Serena Williams is putting tennis ‘at risk’ – as padelmania sweeps across Britain

As Wimbledon battles on in SW19 you could be forgiven for thinking that tennis will always be the King of racquet sports in Britain.

But there’s a new form of tennis in town as stars including David BeckhamJurgen Klopp and even Serena Williams are leading the way in making the shift towards padel.

The sport – which is played on a smaller court and with solid racquets – has seen a meteoric rise since its invention by a Mexican businessman in the 1960s, with more than 500 courts across the country as padelmania sweeps across the UK and beyond.

And now athletes say they fear it could eclipse tennis altogether – with seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic saying the sport is ‘endangered’.

Padel professionals – delighted that so many people are coming to love their sport – now predict it could be on par with tennis within a decade.

The 37-year-old blamed tennis clubs for this growth – saying there is not enough effort to make tennis ‘accessible’ or ‘affordable’.

‘Tennis is the king or queen of all the racket sports, that’s true, but on a club level tennis is endangered,’ the Serbian number one said.

Invented in Mexico in 1969, padel has the same scoring system as tennis but is played with thicker, stringless rackets and lower pressured balls.

A game is started by bouncing the ball and hitting underarm below waist height. After the first return each player may use the walls much like in squash.

The court has what are called rebound ends (usually of toughened glass) and walls of firm rebound mesh and/or glass along the sides.

The ball can bounce and hit the wall only once on your side of the net before you return it.

Scoring in padel is the same as tennis and is most commonly played as sets and games.

To win a set, you must win six games and be leading by a clear two.

Similarly, to clinch a game, you must win four points with a two-point advantage.

Games are scored as 15, 30, 40. If it goes to 40-40 this is a ‘deuce’. You still have to win by two clear points. Whoever wins the next point will have ‘advantage’ and can seal the game by winning the following point.

The game is fast paced and often described as a mix between tennis and squash.

The British Padel Association was formed in 1992 by a group of expats wanting to play in that year’s World Championships.

In November 2020 the Lawn Tennis Association was confirmed as the national governing body for Padel.

‘If we don’t do something about it, as I said, globally or collectively, padel – or pickleball in the States – they’re going to convert all the tennis clubs into padel and pickleball because it’s just more economical.

‘You have one tennis court. You can build three padel courts on one tennis court. You do the simple math.

‘It’s just much more financially viable for an owner of a club to have those courts.’

With less ground to cover and a key focus on the social element, the game has been lauded as a perfect sport for those who have passed their sporting peak – particularly as it swaps out tennis’ serves for an underarm alternative.

But it is not just reserved for the elderly – with superfit athletes including Lebron James sharing their love for the game, and F1 stars Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz repeatedly picturing their shared games on social media.

Even Andy Murray has backed the growing game – investing in court-building company Game4Padel in 2019, as he called it ‘one of the fastest emerging racket sports in the world right now’. His mum Judy called the sport ‘sociable and fun’.

And former British number one Annabel Croft championed the sport – saying it is easier to pick up than tennis.

‘It’s a very inclusive sport, there’s no barriers to anybody trying to pick up a bat and trying to have a go. I would encourage anyone to give it a go,’ she told The Telegraph.

In ten years the number of people playing padel has doubled worldwide – from 12 million in 2014 to 30 million in 2024. It is played by 200,000 amateurs across the UK.

But in six years the number of people playing tennis in the UK grew by less than three per cent – from 889,000 in 2015-16 to 915,000 in 2021-22, according to Sport England’s Active Lives Survey.

The traditional sport still remains the dominant force, however, with 87 million players globally in 2017.

According to Women’s Health, you can burn between 700 and 1,000 calories a session, with particular benefits for the glutes and legs.

Nikhil Mohindra, who is ranked number three in Great Britain, started playing padel seven years ago after struggling with other sports because of his asthma.

The 23-year-old, from Chigwell, Essex, went on to make the Team GB team aged just 20.

He now believes padel could be on par with tennis in ten years – as he says Djokovic’s comments are now ‘all over’ the padel group chats.

He told MailOnline: ‘I started to really enjoy it because social aspects, the community – it’s always a doubles game, so that’s always fantastic.

‘Padel’s a very equalising sport. There’s not a shot where because you’re taller, because you stronger, because you’re smaller, you’ll be better at that.

‘It’s a very neutral sport and it’s very skillful – it’s tactical, more than anything.

‘It’s a smaller court and the ball doesn’t keep going flying everywhere. Everything’s contained within the 20 by 10 meter court and like Djokovic said it’s so much more viable for the owners.

‘Come the end of the decade, it will be close to tennis here in the UK, I believe.’

He says the game was transformed after the Lawn Tennis Club adopted padel as an official sport in the UK, which helped them get more support and funding.

And he has delighted in seeing the sport become more widely known – with England stars in the Euros posting photos of each other playing in between matches.

Mr Mohindra continued: ‘It’s really booming. And on the side of that, you’ve got all of these celebrities who are playing.

‘They’ve all been posting because it’s such a such a different kind of sport. It makes you think differently and it’s very easy and fun to play.’

Asked if he is prepared to become as famous as Murray as the sport grows, he laughed: ‘I would absolutely love that. That would be awesome.

‘I think we have a lot of grind to do first, in terms of developing the sport, but for sure. It’s like the informal version of tennis. That’s why everyone jumps on – it’s such a trendy sport and they love it.

‘I don’t know if I will experience what Andy Murray has but fingers crossed!’

The cost of booking a court ranges between £40 and £80 – more than twice as much as a tennis court, which can be booked for free through many local councils but otherwise costs between £8 and £20.

The more exclusive nature means it can also be more lucrative for tennis clubs – with the smaller courts also meaning that more can be packed in the same area.

And as many clubs struggled with plummeting participation, local teams have enthusiastically embraced the new sport as a way to survive.

Thistle Tennis Club in Edinburgh once had more than 350 members, and with six courts was one of the leading teams in the east of Scotland.

But as their membership fell to as little as 60 adults, in a bid to revitalise the club they opened courts in 2017 and saw membership rebound to even more than their original number – even producing Britain’s number one pair.

Michael Gradon – a former Director at The All England Lawn Tennis Club, who run Wimbledon – helped build the courts as part of Game4Padel, of which he is co-founder and CEO.

But he said that tennis will not be threatened by padal – and the two sports can be played happily together.

He said: ‘Spain has had padel now for some 55 years, and is still producing Nadal, Alcaraz and tennis is still an incredibly strong sport.

‘There’s no obvious logical reason as to why somehow tennis is going to get killed everywhere else.

‘I’ve now introduced several hundred of my tennis friends to padel and almost nobody has given up tennis.

‘I do think, absolutely, the padel is exploding, and obviously not just in the UK. When we started our business, there were only 30 courts in the UK, and there’s now slightly over 500 and I reckon that that number will probably double each year from now on.’

And Mr Gradon says that the padel being so easy to pick up and the sociable element make it really appealing to new players.

He added that rugby clubs are now also lining up to try and build padel courts on their grounds as struggling organisations try to cash in on the sport’s appeal for a sustainable source of income.

He continued: ‘It’s definitely accelerating rather than slowing. We’re very much at the early stage of our journey. Even places like Belgium and Holland have way more courts than we do.

‘The RFU have written to all their clubs saying you’ve got to find a sustainable source of income – you’ve got big playing fields, you know, find ways to use them. And they said padel is a really good way to do that. So if we’ve been inundated with rugby clubs.

‘The challenge here is that land is so expensive, and our planning rules are so incredibly tight.

‘The health of our nation in the Covid, if it’s taught as anything, is that being healthy and fit and active is your best conceivable protection.

A former top-50 professional rackets player, he argues padel can be a ‘nice addition’ to tennis.

He told MailOnline: ‘I believe that there’s certainly a way that they can coexist peacefully and actually help one another in terms of their popularity.

‘I think padel has got some advantages – it’s a little bit easier than tennis so potentially can appeal to a wider range of abilities.

‘I think padel has got a long way to go to sort of establish itself the way that tennis is established.’

They started playing three years ago after a local club in Cheltenham set up a few courts, and they realised the potential for expanding the network of places to enjoy the sport.

He continued: ‘It’s been very popular – we’re pretty busy. I’d say we run at about somewhere between like 85 to 90 per cent capacity

‘I haven’t found the sort of traditionalist tennis crowd have in any way had a problem with it.

‘I don’t think it’s pulled anybody away from tennis clubs, or had an effect on tennis numbers around Wimbledon. I think it’s just been a nice addition for other people.

Djokovic was quizzed on whether tennis should switch to a three-set format to try and gain more young fans.

The sport has tried to change its image to attract new supports in recent years with an insider Netflix series, Break Point.

It was hoped the show would do for tennis what Drive to Survive did for F1.

Djokovic argued that tennis should keep five sets at least in the last rounds of a grand slam because of the ‘excitement’ but agreed the sport needs innovation.

‘When we look at Formula 1, for example, and what they have done in terms of marketing, in terms of growth of the sport, in terms of the races around the world and how popular they are, I think we need to do a better job on our respective tours,’ he said.

Padel was invented in 1969, by Mexican businessman Enrique Corcuera, who wanted a tennis court at his Acapulco home, but didn’t have the space – and was worried about losing the ball into his neighbour’s garden.

His wife Viviana, a former Miss Argentina, helped put together the rules, based on a 1920s pastime played on British cruise ships.

A friend of Corcuera’s, Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe, has been referred to as the grandfather of padel for bringing it to Spain in the 1970s and opening courts at the Marbella Club hotel.

It’s now hailed as the country’s second most popular sport after football – and is loved by national tennis hero Rafael Nadal.

Unsurprisingly, international investors are flocking to padel, including several famous faces. Andy Murray backs Game4Padel, which is bringing the sport to Westfield London, and Cristiano Ronaldo has put money into a giant facility in Lisbon.

And it’s not just swarming with pro athletes – famous faces such as Hugh Grant, Shakira and Pippa Middleton are also game.

Padel was recognised by the International Olympic Committee in 2019, was officially designated a discipline of tennis in Britain in 2020.

It was played at the European Games in Poland in 2023, in its first appearance in a major multi-sport event.

Snobs may once have complained it was a ‘dumbed-down’ version of tennis – the sport’s equivalent of crazy golf – but the well-heeled (such as the Chipping Norton Set) are installing courts in their homes.

Even Royal hangout The Hurlingham Club has four padel courts in its West London grounds.

It’s especially popular with footballers including Mo Salah, David Beckham, who played while living in Miami, and Lionel Messi, who has a court at his Barcelona home.

When London’s Battersea Park recently announced free introductory sessions at its new padel facility, slots were booked solid. (Weekend sessions are still chocker, despite costing £32 an hour.)

In Leeds, a Grade II listed railway engine shed is being converted, while Manchester is building a £2.5million complex dedicated to the sport.

And the UK’s hot new Estelle Manor hotel in Oxfordshire is a hub, having gone for padel rather than tennis courts.
