He became head of state immediately upon the death of his mother, the nation’s longest-reigning monarch, who died peacefully at Balmoral Castle on September 8 2022 at the age of 96.

The King, who is still considered a “newbie monarch” in comparison with his mother’s record-breaking tenure, endured a bombshell second year as sovereign.

He was diagnosed with cancer and had to deal with ongoing treatment, while his daughter-in-law, the Princess of Wales, was also being treated for the condition.

But a source said brave Charles had coped with the past year with a “determination to be as public as he was able” to reassure the nation about how much he could still do.

He has also been buoyed by Queen Camilla’s support.

A source said: “Her natural warmth, resilience and sense of humour, as I’m sure any patient will tell you, is a wonderful thing to have.

“Of course it’s been a stressful year for Her Majesty, too, but there was never a sense of despondency, only a determination that they would get through this, as with so many other challenging issues in the past.”

Charles is expected to attend church, spending time in private prayers and reflection, on the anniversary, which falls during his summer break on his Aberdeenshire estate in the Scottish Highlands.

The source added: “There will be personal thoughts, prayers and reflections.

“I’m sure it will be a very poignant day for all. How could it not be, not least given the year of challenge that the whole family has had?”

The King and Queen are gearing up for an important tour to Australia and Samoa in the autumn – their first major overseas trip since news of Charles’s cancer was announced.

“Health has to remain the number one priority, albeit heading in a very positive trajectory,” the source said.

Camilla gave an insight into the King’s treatment this week when she opened a new cancer centre in Bath, revealing he was “doing very well”.

Down-time will be incorporated in Australia and Samoa, with not too many back to back meetings, consideration given to the time difference, and a hoped-for trip to New Zealand removed to reduce the travel demands, but Charles’s programme is still expected to be “pretty full on”.

The King spent around three months away from public-facing duties and returned in April with a visit to a cancer centre in London.

He had a high profile run of engagements through the next few months including D-Day 80th anniversary commemorations in Portsmouth and Normandy.

Other such events included Trooping the Colour, the incoming Japanese state visit, a short trip to Jersey and Guernsey, and the appointment of a new Prime Minister.

“The best way of seeing how the King has coped is through his actions and words – everything that you’ve seen, everything that he’s said, and everything that he’s done,” the source said.

“From the earliest outset of the health challenge, it was the King’s determination to be as public as he was able, so that people could be reassured by just how much he was still able to do in the circumstances, under his doctors’ advice.

“That has obviously slowly dialed up as the program of treatment and recovery continued, with the result that the King is off on a 12,000 mile trip to Australia and Samoa in a few weeks’ time.”

‘Cancer didn’t bring me to my knees,’ said Hollywood star Michael Douglas after he survived oral cancer a few years ago, ‘it brought me
to my feet.’

I thought of that inspiring quote when I saw King Charles making his
comeback public engagement on Tuesday.

He almost danced out of his state Bentley, beaming happily, and
sporting his favourite Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur pattern tie.

I suspect the tie wasn’t an accidental fashion statement: the T-Rex was known as the king of the dinosaurs, and one of the toughest, most durable creatures in history, only rendered extinct by a massive asteroid hitting Planet Earth.

Charles was clearly absolutely delighted to be back out and about
again, with his beloved loyal wife Queen Camilla at his side, doing
the job he loves.

And it was perfectly fitting that he chose London’s world-famous
Macmillan Cancer Centre to reappear on the public stage, given that
he himself has spent the past few months being treated for cancer.

The first part of the visit was very much royal business as usual, as he posed for photographers, waved at waiting crowds, and went inside to greet cheering staff.

But it was when he met fellow cancer sufferers upstairs as they sat
in armchairs for their chemotherapy treatment that I realised
something profound had changed in our new Monarch.

I’ve been at numerous events with Charles over the years and his
interactions with the public have always been reasonably perfunctory.

He’ll exchange a quick word, or joke, maybe shake a hand or pose for
a photo, then swiftly move on.

He rarely stays with one person for more than 30 seconds or so.

But this looked and felt very different.

He spent significantly longer periods of time talking to the patients,
and with a far greater intensity and focus on what they said to him.

It wasn’t difficult to work out why: he’s in the same health boat
they’re all in, stuck in the same choppy and dangerous cancer ocean,
paddling for his life.

Cancer is the greatest of levellers; it doesn’t care how rich,
famous, old, or privileged you are, it can strike anyone at any time.

And that has given the King and his people shared a raw and visceral
experience that he’s never had before now.

He sat with 63-year-old Lesley Woodbridge, in for her second round of chemo, and they had a lengthy conversation.

“How are YOU?” she asked, after he’d asked her about her own condition.

“Not too bad,” he replied. “It’s always a bit of a shock isn’t it,
when they tell you?”

She nodded knowingly.

Then, as Charles got up to move on a few minutes later, he suddenly
took her hand in his and held it for several long seconds.

It wasn’t his normal handshake, with his right hand.

He used his left hand, which seemed way more personal and intimate.

I’VE NEVER SEEN HIM SO AT EASE

And it was a profoundly moving moment between two people who’d never met before, and will almost certainly never meet again, but who felt instantly bonded because they’re both enduring a very tough physical, emotional and frightening time.

I can’t remember ever seeing Charles be so touchy-feely with the
public, but then he’s probably never felt so at one with regular
Britons.

There was even time for laughter, as he exchanged wry chuckles with a man who’d lost his hair from the chemo.

That man got the special left hand shake too.

As did many others.

And all the patients he met understood the significance of this
markedly more tactile approach.

“Charles held my hands for quite a while, and patted me on the
shoulder,” said one lady afterwards, “and I found myself also patting
him, and asking him how he was, and he said he’s getting there.

“So, there was a connection because he knew what it feels like to be a
patient and I know that he’s going through something.”

One of my best mates is very sadly suffering from brain cancer and
gets very irritated by well-intentioned people telling him to ‘keep
battling’ or asking him about his ‘journey’, or horror of horrors,
pondering about the ‘learnings’ he’s gained from his ordeal.

As he explained to me, he doesn’t have any choice about whether to
‘battle’ cancer, he’s on an endlessly grim ‘journey’, and the only
meaningful ‘learning’ he’s gleaned is that red wine tastes awful on
chemo.

CHARLES WAS ONE OF THEM

But what he has found incredibly helpful is speaking to others in his
situation, because only they can really know what he’s going through,
and how he’s feeling.

Looking at Charles during his hospital visit, I’m sure it’s been
exactly the same experience for him.

You can have all the family and friends in the world get cancer and
feel great sympathy for them, but only those who’ve had it themselves can properly understand the importance of empathy based on shared experience.

Suddenly, King Charles didn’t see the people he met as his subjects,
or mere commoners whose lives are hugely vastly detached from his
rarefied, palatial royal world.

He just saw them as fellow patients and cancer sufferers, people all
going through the same thing as him, with the same fears and worries, all having to face up to their mortality in the same way he’s now had to.

And that gave them a real, tangible, searingly honest emotional
connection which I’ve honestly never seen before between Charles and the public.

ECHOES OF DIANA

Ironically, it reminded me so much of his late ex-wife Princess Diana
who had such a natural, easy warmth with people.

There was also a higher purpose to Charles’s visit, and his accompanying announcement that he is to become Patron of Cancer
Research UK, a patronage previously held by his late great mother
Queen Elizabeth II.

He wants to use his own health crisis to make a real difference.

Several times, quite deliberately knowing the cameras were on him, he made a point of saying it’s so important that people get seen and
treated early enough to survive cancer.

This, the Palace has briefed to the media, is one of the main reasons he went public with his diagnosis – to raise awareness and make people see a doctor and get tested if they have any symptoms.

A DEEP BOND

“I appreciate what you’re doing,” said one male patient, “thank you
so much. We’ve all got to stick together!”

“Yes!” exclaimed Charles (who revealed to another patient that he was
going for more of his treatment later the same day.)

And he meant it.

I doubt the King has ever felt a deeper or more relatable bond with his people.

As he left, he met and exchanged gifts with two young children being treated for cancer at the hospital – Ellis, 11, and Della, 6 who has a brain tumour.

He put his hand comfortingly on Della’s shoulder and didn’t need to
say anything.

They’re in this together.

The third year of his reign will see a continuation of his so-called “4Cs” – his guiding principles of “culture, Commonwealth, community and climate” – with an additional sideline theme of “cancer”.

The King is said to have been greatly encouraged by the way his personal health has been able to broaden discussion and engagement around the issues of all forms of cancer.

This includes the rise in prostate screening after he had surgery at the start of the year.

He hopes to be able to show how people diagnosed with cancer can, if it is right for them, carry on with as much of their normal lives as possible.

Saturday sees the staging of the annual Braemar Gathering when the royals usually take front row seats to watch the traditional highland games, a short drive from Balmoral.

The King has been enjoying his summer break, and looked happy and relaxed when he attended the Aberdeen flower show last Saturday.

Gun salutes are usually fired on Accession Day, but this year the anniversary falls on a Sunday, when salutes traditionally do not take place.

As such, the military tribute by The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery at Hyde Park and The Honourable Artillery Company at the Tower of London has been moved to Monday.

Both regiments taking part were responsible for firing the Death Gun salutes to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II two years ago.

Almost all of the soldiers and horses taking part played a part in the Queen’s state funeral and the proclamation of the King.

A US think-tank plans to take further action after the latest ruling regarding Prince Harry’s US visa application.

The latest ruling regarding Prince Harry’s US visa application has been labelled “suspicious” by the same conservative Washington DC think-tank which initiated the requests to have the Duke’s immigration documents published.

Earlier this week, a judge ruled that the Duke of Sussex’s US visa application should remain private despite him admitting to taking drugs in his memoir, Spare.

Harry found himself in hot water after he released his memoir Spare in January 2023 and revealed he had previously used recreational drugs like cocaine, marijuana and magic mushrooms. Under US law, drug use can be grounds to reject a visa application.

The Heritage Foundation filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security demanding the publication of Harry’s visa documents following his explosive claims, claiming that the request was of “immense public interest”.

But in his latest ruling seen in court documents on Monday, US judge Carl Nichols said: “The public does not have a strong interest in disclosure of the Duke’s immigration records”.

The latest update prompted the executive director of the think-tank’s Oversight Project, Mike Howell, to say that the “Prince Harry scandal just got a lot more suspicious”.

He told Newsweek that the think-tank’s case is not over as they will seek to appeal the ruling, adding: “President Trump has already suggested that Prince Harry will be deported next year – and the case for that just got a lot more compelling! Americans deserve an immigration system with both secure borders and also fairly applied rules for high-profile immigrants like Harry.”

Mr Howell added: “It certainly appears that Harry was given special treatment… and now we know it for something so serious that it involves extensive redactions. Americans will know the full story soon enough… Perhaps, Mr and Mrs Markle will tell us what’s beneath the redactions on their next Netflix special.”

Judge Nichols’s ruling said: “Like any foreign national, the duke has a legitimate privacy interest in his immigration status.

“And the duke’s public statements about his travel and drug use did not disclose, and therefore did not eliminate his interest in keeping private, specific information regarding his immigration status, applications, or other materials.”

He went on to say the public’s interest in the disclosure of Harry’s immigration records is “outweighed by the Duke’s privacy interest.

“Public disclosure of records about a single admission of a foreign national in the circumstances described above would provide the public, at best, limited information about the department’s general policy in admitting aliens.

“And the marginal public benefit of knowing that limited information is outweighed by the privacy interest the duke retains in his immigration status and records.”

Queen Camilla’s son, Tom Barker-Bowles has opened up about how his mother is coping in the months since King Charles received his cancer diagnosis.

Tom also gave a brief health update on King Charles as he travels the country promoting his new cookery book, Cooking and The Crown.

The food critic and writer said His Majesty’s “treatment is going well” and spoke about how his mother was coping with the diagnosis.

The King began treatment for cancer in January and has been resting in Balmoral Place with the Queen Consort. Asked about how his mother is doing, Tom said she had thick skin, saying: “She’s tough, my mother”.

Despite the diagnosis earlier this year, the King has been receiving outpatient care and appears to be on the mend. A source close to the Royal family has indicated that Charles’s health is “heading in a positive trajectory”.

The King’s positive health news comes at a good time as he is ready to embark on a royal tour of Samoa and Australia next month.

Charles and Camilla will arrive in Australia on October 18 and will spend six days in the country before flying to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

It will be the most extensive royal trip for the 75-year-old monarch since he took over but rest days will be added in between.

Buckingham Palace has commented on the planning of the trip, stating: “We’ve had to, as you would with any visit, think about how you can ensure Their Majesties energies are preserved to be at their best.”

The schedule Down Under encompasses just three days of engagements to allow sufficient time for the King to rest.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “We’ve had to, as you would with any visit, think about how you can ensure Their Majesties energies are preserved to be at their best.

“There had been some hope earlier in the year for Their Majesties to be able to visit New Zealand and on doctors’ advice that unfortunately wasn’t able to take place. We’ve had to make some tough decisions with the Australian Government where [Their Majesties] can get to.”

It comes after a report earlier this month cited sources who laid into the royal’s leadership style, with one source calling her “absolutely relentless”.

People who have worked for Meghan Markle have leapt to her defence after a bombshell report claimed disgruntled staff refer to the former Suits star as “Duchess Difficult”.

A piece by The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month cited sources who laid into her leadership style, with one source calling her “absolutely relentless”.

“She marches around like a dictator in high heels, fuming and barking orders,” they said, adding: “I’ve watched her reduce grown men to tears.”

A source close to the couple further claimed: “Everyone’s terrified of Meghan. She belittles people, she doesn’t take advice. They’re both poor decision-makers, they change their minds frequently.

“Harry is a very, very charming person — no airs at all — but he’s very much an enabler. And she’s just terrible,” they opined.

But employees of the 43-year-old have now launched a passionate defence of her, emphasising the “concern and care” she shows staff.

A report by US Weekly titled “What It’s Really Like to Work for Meghan Markle” quoted former and current staff members who shared examples of the couple’s efforts to engender a happy workplace.

“When I adopted my dog, the next day, I had a luxury brand leash and new collar on my doorstep,” one ex-employee told the outlet.

New parents at Archewell, the Sussexes’ group of for-profit and not-for-profit business organisations, have also reportedly been given brand-new gifts and posh second-hand baby items from the couple.

An unnamed source who currently works for Meghan said the Duchess “will do things like: ‘You mentioned on the call your skin is bothering you… I put together a kit for you.’”

Staffers claimed that they leave with “a basket with fresh flowers, fresh fruit and fresh eggs” after meetings at the couple’s Montecito mansion.

Mandana Dayani, former Archwell COO spoke out against the reports, and described the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as “kind, decent, caring people”.

Speaking to US Weekly she said: “Part of the profound injustice of having to speak publicly on this in light of these endless and damaging narratives is that so much of the kindness, mentorship, and support that Prince Harry and Meghan share with others happens quietly behind closed doors.”

“Throughout every global crisis, their first question was always: ‘How can we help?’ Whether they were veterans, women, refugees, animals in harm, they both showed up,” she continued.

King Charles is “keener than ever” to have a normal relationship with his estranged grandchildren, sources say.

King Charles is “committed” to building a normal relationship with his estranged grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, as the monarch “values family above everything”, sources have claimed.

The King’s relationship with his younger son, Prince Harry, may be frostier than it used to be after the latter’s explosive claims against the Firm since his sensational exit and move to the US in 2020, however, he is “keener than ever” to be as involved as he can be with Archie and Lilibet after telling friends he is “not content” with only seeing on video calls.

Charles has only seen the eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a handful of times and his granddaughter only once.

A source told the Mirror: “The King is absolutely committed to being present in all of his grandchildren’s lives.

“He values family above everything and whatever the course of his ­relationship with his son he would never be content with just seeing his grandchildren on the odd video call.”

Meanwhile, royal author Ingrid Seward claimed family “has always been important to the King” and added that it’s “sad” he doesn’t see more of his grandchildren from across the pond.

She said: “Family has always been important to the King. He remembers his own somewhat fragmented childhood as his parents were always busy doing their duty.

“It is a great sadness to him he doesn’t see more of Archie and Lilibet.

“That is why he will never break ties with Harry. He does not want a FaceTime relationship with his son’s children.

The 48-year-old has an estimated net worth of £372million ($450m).

It is fair to say that the Englishman is a big presence on social media – having 86m followers on Instagram and 57m followers on Facebook.

He has over a dozen properties in his portfolio – including a luxurious penthouse in Miami which was bought for £17.15m.

The jaw-dropping pad in Miami is situated on the 59th floor of One Thousand Museum. He bought the property through his firm Beckham Brand Ltd when he was in the process of setting up Inter Miami.

According to the Daily Mirror, by the time he retired, Beckham had earned £659m ($800m) on and off the field, making him the seventh highest-paid athlete ever at the time.

Sponsorship deals

Even after retiring from football, it is fair to say that Beckham is still penning incredible endorsement deals.

The British sensation has banked millions in commercial endorsements from sponsors including Adidas, Coty, H&M, Sainsbury’s, Samsung and his newest partner, Breitling, according to Forbes.

His deal with Adidas was inked in 2003, which was in the form of a lifetime contract – which is worth £132m ($160m). At the time of its signing, it was one of the largest endorsement deals in sports history.

It has also been reported that he has made over £247,000 ($300,000) as the ambassador of the Swiss luxury watch company Tudor – which he signed a deal in 2017.

He has also been the face of Haig Club scotch whisky for the last nine years, advertising the alcoholic drink in a slew of promotional campaigns.

However, Beckham ended his partnership with the booze brand earlier this year, with all of the social media profiles set to inactive.

The Englishman signed a mega-money deal with the drinks company in 2014 but is now seeking to venture out into his own range of drinks.

A source told The Sun: ‘Haig confirmed that David wouldn’t be renewing his contract with them earlier this year.

‘It is now officially over and Haig is on the lookout for someone new.’

In 2014, David launched his own company DB Ventures – which handles his multiple sporting and fashion endorsements.

With a reported net worth of $450 million (£370 million), he’s thought to bring in a hefty sum each year with brand partnerships and his own ventures.

But last year, he sold 55% the company to Authentic Brands, the owner of Juicy Couture, for around £200m.

At the time, it was reported that the deal would help him to crack into the US with his financial ventures.

A new book has claimed that Meghan Markle issued an exclusion order regarding David and Victoria Beckham.

The explosive claim was made by author Tom Bower in his book The House of Beckham: Money, Sex and Power.

Although the Beckhams attended Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not in touch with them anymore due to a feud.

Bower claimed in his book that Meghan banned Harry from being photographed with David at an Invictus Games event because she was afraid it would upstage her husband.

“Beckham found himself alone at the Invictus Games stadium,” Tom wrote. “Arriving on the agreed day to meet Prince Harry he was perplexed [as to]

why officials were playing a dance to keep him happy, but away from Harry.”

“Photographs of the two together were forbidden. The royal snub was brutal. David Beckham was puzzled,” Tom continued. “The exclusion order, it later transpired, was issued by Meghan.”

“She did not want any competition in the media from Beckham, and especially not from his wife Victoria,” he added.

Another explosive claim

Elsewhere in the book, Tom claimed Victoria gave Meghan thousands of pounds worth of clothes and accessories to promote the former Spice Girls star’s brand. As part of a marketing drive, Meghan was given a “coat, dress, boots and a handbag worth £6,000” for royal Christmas festivities at Sandringham House, the book claimed.

“Victoria agreed to provide a coat, dress, boots and a handbag worth £6,000 to Meghan for the Royal Family’s traditional Christmas Day parade in Sandringham,” Tom wrote. “Later, Meghan wore a Beckham custom-made pregnancy outfit and a white coat and dress for a service in Westminster Abbey.”

Former Spice Girls star Victoria Beckham was reportedly reduced to tears by her husband David Beckham’s heartfelt speech at her 50th birthday party.

Posh Spice is said to have ‘welled up’ after hearing the England football star praising Victoria as a “role model” in front of 100 guests, including the rest of the Spice Girls.

The 48-year-old dad-of-four was also seen looking delighted as he filmed all five of the Spice Girls reuniting to sing and dance the choreography to their hit song Stop.

A source who attended the party, which is reported to have cost an estimated £250,000, revealed what David had said in his speech.

They told the publication: “David told the party how Victoria’s always been a huge inspiration to him.

“He talked of what an amazing role model she is and what an incredible mum she has been. The kids also did speeches — it was very informal but they spoke of how grateful they are for everything she’s done for them.”

The source added that there was a big Spice Girls theme at the bash, with hits such as Wannabe, Say You’ll Be There, and Who Do You Think You Are all making the playlist.

“They had to make up for lost time – and they did exactly that. The girls were ­having the time of their lives,” said the party insider.

David and Victoria’s son Cruz, 19, who is following in his mum’s footsteps by pursuing a career in music, also sang a cover of their 1996 track Mama at the birthday bash at Oswald’s in Mayfair.

According to reports, guests were treated to a tasty meal of steak, sea bass, and Italian-style sharing platters as well as £500 bottles of champagne to warm them up before hitting the dance floor.

Victoria’s birthday was a star-studded affair with the likes of Jason Statham and his partner, model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Hollywood str Tom Cruise and Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria, all in attendance.

Victoria was of course joined by her family, husband David Beckham, sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz and daughter Harper.

At the end of the Netflix docuseries “Beckham,” David Beckham opens up about his love of cooking.

As he discusses his barbecue tent and checks on his roast chicken, a voice interjects.

“Did you put thyme in there as well?” asks Brooklyn Beckham, the soccer star’s eldest son.

“Yes chef!” he replies with a laugh.

It’s the younger Beckham who’s made headlines in recent years for his cooking skills, but the 24-year-old told Insider that his father has taught him a lot in the kitchen.

And Brooklyn Beckham, who sat down with Insider recently to discuss his new partnership with the kitchen-appliance company Typhur,

revealed that his dad’s best dish is his spaghetti bolognese.

Beckham said his father learned how to make the dish while he was living in Italy to play for AC Milan from 2009 to 2010.

“My dad and I, we took this Italian pasta-making class when my dad lived in Milan,” Beckham recalled. “He learned from, obviously, the best place you could learn how to make pasta.”

“My dad loves cooking, so he used to cook it all the time when I was a little kid,” he added. “I would be so excited coming home from school and seeing my dad make spaghetti bolognese.”

Beckham has since taken his dad’s recipe and made a few tweaks, which he’s working to perfect for his wife Nicola Peltz.

As he continues to pursue his passion for cooking, Beckham said his dad has been a huge source of inspiration.

“Growing up, my dad has always loved being in the kitchen,” Beckham said.

“And as a very young baby, I was lucky enough to travel with him to different places in the world and try different cuisines.

I think my love for cooking and trying different cuisines definitely came from my dad.”

When his dad isn’t whipping up a great spaghetti bolognese, Beckham said he also makes a delicious Sunday roast — as well as an incredible truffle risotto.

“He actually taught me how to make truffle risotto, which I’m still trying to perfect,” Beckham said. “I still need a few more lessons.

I don’t know what he does to it, but it’s just a little bit better than mine.”

While Beckham has faced plenty of criticism for his cooking videos, he told Insider he isn’t fazed by the haters.

“To be honest, I’m used to the hate,” Beckham said. “It doesn’t really bother me. Cooking makes me happy. I have more important things to worry about than people saying a little bit of rubbish about me.”

Beckham plans to keep improving his skills with the help of Typhur’s new line of appliances, which he said has helped Peltz start learning how to cook as well.

“I’m not a professional at all, I’m just starting out,” he added. “So I’m just gonna continue doing my videos and see where it takes me.”

David Beckham reportedly shares a very cordial bond with his youngest kid, Harper Beckham.

As fans will be aware, David Beckham and his wife Victoria Beckham share a brood of four with their daughter, Harper being the youngest of kids.

Previously, the legendary footballer revealed that his daughter is the “boss” of the Beckham family,

but now the father of four reportedly fears losing his innocent daughter, who has started to act more like a teenage girl.

An insider shared in this regard, “David and Harper have such a special bond,” per Heat Magazine.

Elaborating on what he thinks of his daughter being romantically involved with someone,

the source also claimed, “He is naturally a protective dad, so obviously he’s nervous of anyone hurting his little girl.”
