David Beckham has spoken out about the criticism levelled at him last year for acceptingan ambassador role for Qatar during last year’s World Cup.

The decision to hold the football tournament in Qatar was met with a backlash at the time due to the country’s human rights issues,

particularly with regards to migrant workers and the LGBTQ+ community.

In the lead-up to the event, David came under fire after signing a deal – reported to have been worth £100 million – for his ambassadorship role.

While David’s reps issued a statement shortly after the controversy, he was asked directly

about it during a red carpet appearance at the UK premiere of his new Netflix documentary series – titled Beckham – on Tuesday.

According to Sky News, he was asked if he had done his homework about what life is like for LGBTQ+ people in Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal.

“I always do that,” he insisted. “Let the football do the talking, it was a great tournament, a lot of people were happy.

“I had a lot of conversations with the LGBTQ community when I was there. They said they had enjoyed the games and they felt it was the safest World Cup they’d had for a long time, it was an important competition and one I was proud to be a part of.”

He continued: “Once we were there we knew that there was going to be people that spoke about it a little bit more.

“I’ve always said that football is a game that should be shared around the world. This was an opportunity for the Arab world to get a World Cup.”

Last year, comedian Joe Lycett publicly called out the former England captain for accepting the ambassadorship role and, issued him with an ultimatum ahead of the start of the football tournament.

In a video posted on social media, Joe claimed that if David pulled out of the deal he would donate £10K of his own money to charities supporting queer people – but if he didn’t, the comic would shred the money instead.

The stand-up comedian later released a video after the former footballer failed to respond, in which appeared shred the cash. However, he eventually revealed the video was a hoax, and he’d already donated the money to LGBTQ+ charities.

In a special Channel 4 show documenting Joe’s stunt, David’s reps issued a statement insisting he understood there are “different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East”.

The full statement read: “David has been involved in a number of World Cups and other major international tournaments both as a player and an ambassador and he’s always believed that sport has the power to be a force for good in the world.

“Football, the most popular sport globally, has a genuine ability to bring people together and make a real contribution to communities.

“We understand that there are different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East but see it as positive that debate about the key issues has been stimulated directly by the first World Cup being held in the region.

“We hope that these conversations will lead to greater understanding and empathy towards all people and that progress will be achieved.”

  • David Beckham once angered Victoria to the point of inducing labor when he announced he might miss the birth to shoot a Pepsi commercial with J-Lo and Beyoncé (video)

David Beckham once angered Victoria to the point of inducing labor when he announced he might miss the birth to shoot a Pepsi commercial with J-Lo and Beyoncé (video)

Victoria Beckham was “p***** off” when her husband David Beckham almost skipped the birth of one of their children

to shoot a Pepsi advertisement with Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé.

In the former Spice Girls singer and her former footballer husband’s new ‘Beckham’ Netflix docuseries, Victoria, 49, tells how she was pregnant with their son Cruz, now 18,

when doctors told her she needed to schedule a C-section – which is when David, 48, told the singer he had a prior commitment.

Victoria recalled: “(I asked David) ‘What do you mean a shoot?’ I was like, ‘Seriously, I’m about to burst. I’m on bed rest! Are you kidding me?

You’ve got a damn photo shoot with Jennifer Lopez, who is gorgeous and not about to have a baby?’”

Even though David was able to change the date of the shoot, Victoria, who had Cruz in a Madrid hospital in February 2005, was still furious when she saw photos from the set.

She added: “So I had my C-section, and I remember lying there, don’t feel at my most gorgeous, let’s just say.

“And I remember someone showing me the front page of the newspaper, which was a gorgeous picture of David between Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé, and the headline was, ‘What would Posh say?’

“Let me tell you what Posh would say – ‘Posh was p***** off!’”

The commercial saw Jennifer, 54, and Beyoncé, 42, sent on a mission to defeat a mob of bad guys at a restaurant where David was dining.

After tackling the villains as the ex-footballer watched on in awe the glamorous pop stars sipped on some ice-cold Pepsi.

David then pulled up a chair to sit next to them as sexy music started to play.

Jennifer tells him: “You are…” with David interrupting her to smirk: “Yes, I am.”

The singer then adds: “… sitting on my purse” – before she is seen grabbing her bag and leaving the restaurant along with Beyoncé.

Victoria also addressed David’s alleged infidelities for the first time in the four-part Netflix show.

In 2003, David, who now co-owns Inter Miami, moved to Spain to play for Real Madrid while she remained in the UK with their two older sons – Brooklyn, now 24, and Romeo, 21.

Soon after, Rebecca Loos, 46, and Sarah Marbeck, 48, claimed they had affairs with David.

Victoria admitted: “It was the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life.”

She added even though she “resented” David at the time, she “internalised” the trauma for the sake of his career, adding: “I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me.”

Victoria relocated to Spain and the pair “got through” the heartache, even though David doesn’t know “how” they did.

He said on the show: “Victoria is everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters, and at that time, we needed to fight for each other. We needed to fight for our family, and what we had was worth fighting for.”

David ended up surprising her with a wedding vow renewal in London.

Cruz was born about a year later, and the couple welcomed their now 12-year-old daughter Harper in July 2011.

Michael Harte reveals inaccuracies in David Beckham’s documentary film, triggering a wave of criticism from the Beckham family’s fan community (video)

Directed by Fisher Stevens, the documentary miniseries Beckham has been a hit for Netflix, charting David Beckham’s rise as a Manchester United star, England team captain,

and player for Real Madrid and the LA Galaxy. But football (we’ll call it that here, as Beckham, his family, his mentor Alex Ferguson,

and dozens of teammates and fellow celebrities do throughout the miniseries) is only one way into the star’s life,

with the relationship between David and his wife of almost 25 years,

Victoria Beckham (née Adams, and still oft known as Posh Spice) central to framing the mind-blowing level of celebrity heaped upon the couple after they got together in the 1990s.

Beckham is considered one of the best midfielders of all time and has won league titles in England, Spain, the US,

and France, but his fame transcends even this level of spectacular professional success. Through its star’s candor and sincere interviews with Victoria, his parents,

and former teammates like Gary Neville and Landon Donovan, Beckham explains Beckham as a new kind of football star and celebrity in one. Explaining the toll this takes on his family is something Stevens embraces rather than elides over, and ultimately, the documentary is as compelling a commentary on the alarming downsides of global stardom as it is a biography of Beckham’s career and personal life.

Given the sheer volume of footage of the Beckhams, culling the most salient gems and matching them to over 70 interviews was a mighty undertaking. We spoke with editor Michael Harte about reworking the entire initial edit, abandoning his standard approach to archival footage, and letting Beckham’s most important relationships shape what came to life on screen.

How did you even approach such a massive amount of footage?

I’ve worked on some projects with a huge amount of archives before. I have a good method to get through it, but I’m slightly obsessive and have to watch everything. When it came to this, it was like, am I going to be able to? You’ve got the most photographed man in the world who then marries the most photographed woman in the world. I also had 30 years of football matches, the buildup before it, the celebrations after, the fallout, and the news. This was, without a doubt, my Everest in terms of archive. Every shot can change a documentary if you use it in the right way, and I can’t sleep properly unless I go through all the material and have it organized.

How, in particular, did you manage all the games?

I did have an assistant for the matches. We would go through every game he ever played, from the season before he scored the goal at Wimbledon, from 1996 onwards, and every time he touched the ball, we’d mark it. What I realized was that when I was watching the games, I got more interested in the moments when he didn’t have the ball and the camera was on him. He’d glance at his manager, Alex Ferguson, and Alex Ferguson would look at him. It was a film not just about football but about family and father figures, and Alex Ferguson really was one of his father figures. Those shots became key. That was a whole new layer of archive we needed to pull in, which was Alex Ferguson on the sidelines whenever he shouted at David or called to him.

At some point, Ted Beckham, David’s father, mentions that he also has every single kiddie football match David has ever played on tape.

The funny thing was, he was the last interview I watched. I’d thought I had a handle on all the material and then he dropped that line, I’ve got 1300 videotapes.

How did you even know when it was time to move from the archive into the edit?

It sounds a little bit cheesy, but I’ll wake up one day and feel it’s time to start playing with the material. Normally, that time is when I’ve seen everything. But I realized with David’s story that there is no end. There are so many different lanes in this story that the decision was made: What are we focusing on here? And that would tell us when we’d seen enough material. You’re just not able to watch every bit of material from David Beckham. About six weeks in, I realized that my method had to go out the window.

Beckham’s image went up and down with his fans, particularly after the red card at the 1998 World Cup. How did you hit those emotional beats?

That became pivotal to the story. The reaction from the fans in England is so intense. I’m a huge football fan, and I kind of get it, but not to that extent. There was something else going on that was more than football. Everything in Episode 1 is building up to that moment. It’s an ascent to the top, and watching the dynamic between him and Victoria and Alex Ferguson is fascinating. The footage came in and it was just endless of fans almost rioting. Fisher really recreated a very comfortable space for him to discuss 1998. It almost felt like therapy. That, to me, when I watched all the interviews, was the bit that stood out the most emotionally. It felt like you could well and truly tell it was the first time he said a lot of the things he said about 1998. I wanted to lean into Fisher’s voice a little more in those sections because you wanted it to feel like he was telling someone, that it wasn’t just an interview for a camera. The relationship between Fisher and David, particularly in that section, was really important.

Were you particularly interested in the Beckhams going into this project?

I’m a Liverpool fan. And I’m from Ireland, so England, we tried to beat for years. But look, even though I was a Liverpool fan and Ireland fan, in the 90s, I dyed my hair and grew it long because I wanted to be Beckham, as many people did. He transcended football. I wanted to beat him, but I also wanted to be him. And the Spice Girls and Manchester United were huge. So when [he and Victoria] got together, we hadn’t seen that before. And I haven’t seen that again, to that extent.

The documentary really conveys that level of extreme stardom. How did you ensure that you showed the highs and the lows?

That was a big focus for us when we were cutting to really lean into that. Initially, the first cut we had was very much focused on football. It was about Manchester United and David being within that. As a football fan, it was fascinating, but I remember realizing we’re isolating so much of the audience here. This is not doing justice to David Beckham’s story. We asked, what is this actually about? Two things emerged: one is celebrity, especially in the 90s, and the second is family. The initial first cut was using David to understand football. I remember watching it with my partner; she was totally uninterested. We then leaned into his relationship with Victoria, his relationship with his family, and with his father figure, Alex Ferguson. It really helped. And then we used the celebrity world as a kind of backdrop to see how a family navigates this world, which was very intense in the 90s, especially in the UK. We didn’t ignore the football, but it became a way in as opposed to the endpoint.

I particularly loved Victoria’s interviews. Were they key to getting the story across?

I thought she was incredible. Sometimes, if I’d get stuck at story points in the edit, inevitably, the answer would be, what’s Victoria doing right now? Where is she? Are the paparazzi on her case? Ultimately, she’s very insightful and very funny, and she did give it all to Fisher in the interview. I knew the Beckhams from the 90s because they were so famous, but I didn’t really know the Beckhams. I had an image of Posh Spice, but when I started looking at her archive and interviews, I realized this is a very complex person who has gone through a huge amount that I can relate to, which is trying to make it work for your family. David was the same. That’s what it always came down to for them. Their interviews really came alive when they talked about each other and their family. I think the peak of it all is when David pops his head in the door, and it’s the “be honest” moment. You just see the dynamic between the two of them. It felt real.

David Beckham shares the key to successfully persuading Messi to join Inter Miami (video)

By Simon Evans BRIDGETOWN Barbados (Reuters) – Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber says an apparent lack of political will is making the bid

to set up a franchise in Miami “complicated” and that David Beckham will need to find a stadium — or no club will be formed in the city.

Former England international Beckham has an option for an MLS franchise, which he has intended to use in Miami.

But he has so far had two proposals for stadium sites rejected by local politicians. “I’m neither optimistic (nor) pessimistic,” Garber told Reuters in an interview.

“It really is a very simple position we are in – if we can’t get the right stadium, we can’t go to Miami. “We have been challenged to find a site that we believe will be successful.

“We had two sites on the waterfront. Both were supported by the city mayor and the county mayor,

and then we lost that support, so it is clear to me that it is a complicated market in a wide variety of ways,” Garber said on the margins of the Soccerex Americas Forum, where in a panel discussion he had described Miami as a “conundrum”. MLS will expand to Florida next year when Orlando City join the league, and the growth in the south-east will continue with the addition of Atlanta in 2017. In both cases local governments backed new stadium plans and supported the creation of MLS teams in those cities, and Garber says that is the missing ingredient in Miami. “Politically I am not sure that there is the same alignment on developing a vision in the way that there has been in a city like Orlando or a city like Atlanta.

    “If we can’t find an alignment we aren’t going to be able to go there,” said Garber, who declined to comment on whether Beckham’s option could be transferred to another city if his Miami plans do not come to fruition. The MLS chief said that the south-east, which saw a Miami and a Tampa Bay team removed from the then struggling league in 2002, was now a key part of the league’s growth plans. “Many years ago when we were establishing our expansion plan, we knew we needed a team south of Washington D.C.. We have 80-100 million people who live in the south-east;

there is lots of soccer interest, lots of demographic shifts where people from soccer-loving countries are coming in to cities like Orlando, Atlanta and Miami, so it has been a deep focus for us,” he said. “Orlando City has hit the ground running. They have a passionate fan base that will be great supporters, Kaka is joining the team, we have got a strong ownership group. “Then Atalanta joins in 2017, which will be the second team, and I would like to see a team in Miami if the stars could align and we were able to get the stadium that we believe is the driver of our success in that market.” (Reporting By Simon Evans, Editing by Neville Dalton)

He wants to be seen to “lead from the front” and is determined to saddle-up on his horse Noble for the big event in June.

It came as Buckingham Palace released a new picture of the King and Queen on Friday to mark their 19th wedding anniversary.

Charles could ride alongside Prince William, Princess Anne and Prince Edward from Buckingham Palace, up The Mall, and take the salute at Horse Guards Parade.

But despite the King’s determination, the mounted comeback could be scuppered as doctors and aides are still urging caution.

The spectacular sight would provide a huge boost to the nation.

His mother, Queen Elizabeth, stopped appearing on horseback in 1986 when she was 60.

So last year the King became the first monarch in 37 years to arrive on horseback for Trooping the Colour.

He will officially return to public duty on Tuesday, visiting a cancer treatment centre, joined by Queen Camilla.

A trip to France in June to stand on the Normandy beaches with world leaders, marking 80 years since D-Day, and attending five days at Royal Ascot are also on the cards — but not guaranteed.

It comes after The Sun this month exclusively revealed His Majesty had ordered aides to “supercharge” his diary as he is “raring to go” after treatment.

Buckingham Palace insists the monarch has not been given the medical all-clear and his cancer treatment continues.

An insider said: “It is a sign of the King’s desire to get back to work and follow the mantra of the late Queen Elizabeth II that a monarch needs to be seen.

    ‘Raring to go’

“The King wants to lead from the front.

“He’s been quite clear that he is raring to go.

“He doesn’t need to appear on horseback at Trooping the Colour because his mother did stand down when she was 60, but believes if it can be achieved — and with the agreement of royal doctors — then he wants it to happen.

“There will obviously be a lot of nervousness and an extraordinary amount of checks to make sure appearing on horseback will not be detrimental to his health or recovery.

“But the King rightly believes it is important he is at least there in some capacity.”

All 8,000 tickets for the royal event on June 15 have already sold out.

It will see members of the Royal Family on horseback join 250 soldiers from the Foot Guards.

Number 9 Company Irish Guards will Troop their Colour and there will be more than 1,350 soldiers of the Household Division and King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, including over 300 musicians from the Massed Bands.

Last year, Charles attended his first Trooping as King in his bearskin and tunic.

He took the salute mounted on his horse, Noble.

He was flanked by Prince Edward, Princess Anne and Prince William, all mounted on horses on the parade ground.

William’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, travelled in a royal carriage.

The three youngsters also joined the King and their parents to line up on the Buckingham Palace balcony for a traditional fly-past, while crowds on The Mall sang God Save The King.

The ceremony is one of the most important in the King’s calendar.

The birthday party celebrates the bond between the monarch and the Armed Forces.

It has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign for more than 260 years, although the King’s actual birthday is in November.

His Majesty has pencilled in a string of major events in May and June after being told he can return to work, including Buckingham Palace garden parties, the Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Ascot and the D-Day 80th anniversary commemorations.

Planning is also under way for the King and Queen to embark on a tour of Australia in the autumn.

Along with Tuesday’s cancer treatment centre visit, the Palace has also confirmed the King and Queen will host a State Visit from the Emperor and Empress of Japan in late June.

It comes after he appeared at the royals’ Easter Sunday service and spent several minutes shaking hands with well-wishers outside St George’s Chapel, Windsor.

On Friday, Buckingham Palace said doctors were “sufficiently pleased” with the King’s recovery and are “very encouraged by the progress” of his cancer treatment.

The King is said to be “greatly encouraged” by his return to front-line work and hailed his medical team for their expertise.

A spokesman for Charles did not comment.

Prince William and David Beckham seemed to have anticipated Gareth Southgate’s resignation, given his recent peculiar statements, leading fans to believe they were the reason behind Gareth stepping down (video)

Celebrities have been quick to jump on social media and share their thoughts

about Gareth Southgate stepping down as England manager following the Three Lions’ heartbreaking defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin last week.

Southgate announced his decision to quit in a statement issued by the Football Association on Tuesday morning (16 July)

with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe rumoured to be under consideration to become his successor.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” Southgate said.

“It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for a change and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”

Former England captain David Beckham shared his admiration for Southgate on his Instagram story in wake of the news, writing: “Thank you, boss. You wasn’t just one of our most successful managers but you also did it with elegance.

“Congratulations Gareth to you and your staff.”

Football pundit Gary Lineker, who was critical of Southgate’s tactics during the tournament, also wished the former England manager well following his resignation on X/Twitter.

“Wishing Gareth Southgate all the very best in the future,” he wrote.

“He brought pride, respect and a togetherness to @England that we hadn’t seen for a long time. He was close, very close to footballing immortality and he always did the job with humility, decency and dignity. Thank you, Gareth.”

Meanwhile, broadcaster Piers Morgan who had previously stated Southgate “should resign” bluntly told his followers “UPDATE: Gareth’s gone,” before joking he should be appointed as the next England manager ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Britain’s newly appointed prime minister Keir Starmer also offered Southgate his thanks upon news of his departure. Gareth’s time as England manager will be remembered for bringing back the hope and belief the country had been crying out for so long,” he wrote on X/Twitter.

“I join with everyone today in saying thank you to both Gareth Southgate and his team for all they have achieved and for laying the foundations for future success.”

Prince William, who previously went viral for his theatrical reaction to England winning their Euro 2024 quarter-final match against Switzerland on penalties and attended the heartbreaking final in Berlin on Sunday, also thanked Southgate as an “England fan”.

“Thank you for creating a team that stands shoulder to shoulder with the world’s finest in 2024,” he said. “Thank you for showing humility, compassion, and true leadership under the most intense pressure and scrutiny.

“And thank you for being an all-round class act. You should be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved.”

OMG! Princess Catherine Mentioned Baby No.4 After Kensington Palaces ‘Big Announcement’

Catherine looked beautiful in a green patterned dress while her little royal enjoy the large ice cream. The family remained in their paid suits as George wore a football kit and Charlotte wore a white polo shirt and black shorts. They looked amazing in their matching outfits as Princess Catherine reportedly bought ice cream for her kids as the family recently went out to enjoy the spring sunshine in London.

Speculation surrounding Princess Catherine, the Princess of Wales, has reignited after Kensington Palace’s “big announcement” and recent public appearances that have left royal fans buzzing about the possibility of a fourth royal baby. The headline-making images showing Catherine cradling her stomach during public outings have fueled rumors that she may be expecting her fourth child with Prince William. While neither the royal family nor Kensington Palace has confirmed the news, the excitement has led many to wonder if the royal couple is preparing to expand their family once more.

Catherine and William, who are parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, have always emphasized the importance of family. The couple’s dedication to their children’s upbringing is well-documented, with Catherine known for her hands-on parenting approach. In recent years, there have been multiple instances when rumors of a potential pregnancy have made headlines, but the royal family has consistently kept their personal matters private until official announcements are made.

The renewed speculation comes shortly after a significant announcement from Kensington Palace that left fans wondering if it could be linked to a royal baby. Princess Catherine’s fashion choices at recent events, including a stunning white gown that closely hugged her figure, have only added fuel to the fire. The images circulating online show Catherine with a subtle hand gesture on her stomach, a classic sign often associated with early pregnancy.

Royal watchers have pointed out that this gesture, combined with her glowing appearance, is reminiscent of how she carried herself during her previous pregnancies. Furthermore, the Princess of Wales has mentioned in past interviews her love for children and the possibility of having more, which only adds credibility to the growing speculation.

However, some insiders have noted that the timing might be questionable given Catherine’s busy schedule of royal engagements, charitable work, and her increasing role within the monarchy as King Charles III continues his reign. With her current workload, it’s unclear how she would manage another pregnancy alongside her existing duties.

Nevertheless, royal fans around the globe are eagerly awaiting further news from the Palace. Whether or not there is a baby number four on the way, it is clear that Catherine continues to capture the hearts of the public with her elegance, grace, and dedication to her family. Until any official confirmation, the public can only speculate, but the anticipation is certainly growing.

The coming months will likely shed more light on the situation, and if true, it would mark another joyful chapter in the life of the royal couple. Until then, all eyes remain on Kensington Palace and any forthcoming announcements.
