Prince Harry ‘showed he feels at home with the Spencers’ by staying with Uncle Charles on UK visit, royal experts say – after he turned down King Charles’ invite to stay at Buckingham Palace

Prince Harry ‘showed he feels at home with the Spencers’ by staying with his uncle at Althorp House during his trip to the UK last week, a royal commentator said today.

The Duke of Sussex is thought to have visited Charles Spencer at the ancestral home and final resting place of his late mother Princess Diana in Northamptonshire.

Harry stayed with Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, at Althorp after going to the funeral of Diana’s brother-in-law Lord Robert Fellowes last Thursday, according to People.

And royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told MailOnline today that Harry staying at Althorp ’emphasises his links with his mother’s family’ – far more so than with his father King Charles III as he remains estranged from most of the Royal Family.

Last Thursday’s service took place two days before the 27th anniversary of Diana’s death on Saturday. Her final resting place is on an island on the Oval Lake at Althorp.

The Duke has remained close to Diana’s family – and her brother Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, also attended a service in May for the tenth anniversary of Harry’s Invictus Games at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, when no senior royal was in attendance.

It was claimed by The Times on August 15 that Harry decided to stay in a hotel during this trip in May after turning down an offer of lodging at Buckingham Palace.

Today, Mr Fitzwilliams said that Harry’s decision to stay at Althorp last week ‘is, of course, understandable so near to the anniversary of his mother’s death’.

But he continued: ‘It does, however, throw into sharp relief the apparent breakdown in relations not only with his brother, to whom he has reportedly not spoken for two years, but with his father, who is fighting cancer.’

ANALYSIS: Prince Harry clearly feels at home with the Spencers

    By RICHARD FITZWILLIAMS

People magazine has now replaced Omid Scobie as the Sussexes’ unofficial source to disseminate news.

It has reported that after his surprise visit to Britain to attend the memorial service of his uncle Lord Fellowes, he stayed at the Spencers’ family home of Althorp where his mother Princess Diana is buried.

This is, of course, understandable so near to the anniversary of his mother’s death on August 31.

It does, however, throw into sharp relief the apparent breakdown in relations not only with his brother, to whom he has reportedly not spoken for two years, but with his father, who is fighting cancer.

Reports are unanimous that William and Harry did not speak at the memorial service.

As soon as he heard of his father’s cancer diagnosis Harry flew over, though he only spent under an hour with him.

On his second visit, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Invictus at St Paul’s Cathedral, there were contrary briefings as to why the two of them, despite being in close proximity, failed to meet.

What made it bizarre is that Harry, having called Britain ‘too dangerous’ for him and his family, rejected an offer of Buckingham Palace from his father and stayed in a hotel instead.

The Spencers supported him at St Paul’s, Earl Spencer attended, as did his aunt Lady Jane Fellowes to whom the late Lord Fellowes was married. No member of the royal family was present.

The announcement of his staying at Althorp after the memorial service intentionally emphasises his links with his mother’s family.

Perhaps it will be they, and not members of the Royal Family, who will support him when the Invictus Games are held in Birmingham in 2027.

It has apparently been clarified that Harry is not seeking some form of role within the royal family.

Although the paperback of Spare, published in October, contains no new material and he will be giving no interviews promoting it, it will nonetheless attract more publicity which will be detrimental to the royal family.

It remains to be seen if and when Harry will return again to Britain during his father’s illness.

What is clear is that he feels at home with the Spencers and who can forget Earl Spencer’s oration at his mother’s funeral. Who knows where that might lead in the future?

RICHARD FITZWILLIAMS is a royal commentator and public relations consultant

Harry made a surprise appearance at Lord Fellowes’s memorial service at St Mary’s Church in Snettisham, Norfolk, and is then reported to have travelled to Althorp.

The funeral was also attended by Prince William, but witnesses claimed the estranged brothers kept their distance and sat apart at the back of the church.

One member of the congregation told People: ‘Most people were astounded that Harry came. He was on remarkably good form – and you could tell he was very pleased to see everybody. And he was very pleased that he had come over.’

And Mr Fitzwilliams added: ‘The announcement of his staying at Althorp after the memorial service intentionally emphasises his links with his mother’s family.

‘Perhaps it will be they, and not members of the Royal Family, who will support him when the Invictus Games are held in Birmingham in 2027.’

He also said: ‘It remains to be seen if and when Harry will return again to Britain during his father’s illness.

‘What is clear is that he feels at home with the Spencers and who can forget Earl Spencer’s oration at his mother’s funeral. Who knows where that might lead in the future?’

MailOnline has requested comment from Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, and representatives of the Sussexes about reports that Harry stayed at Althorp.

But the claims are likely to be true given the US publication’s close links to the couple.

Last month, The Times reported that Harry was offered lodging at Buckingham Palace while visiting the UK in May but turned the rooms down to stay in a hotel.

Prior to this report it had been believed that Harry had asked his father to stay in a royal residence on the trip, but appeared to change his mind and instead opted for a hotel.

But the Times article suggested Harry was offered rooms in Buckingham Palace while his father was staying at nearby Clarence House.

A source told the newspaper at the time: ‘I don’t know what more the King could have done. He offered Harry to stay at Buckingham Palace but that it seems even that wasn’t good enough.

‘It was far from clear what the duke’s plans were. When it came to it there was no space in the King’s diary in between treatment and other scheduled events.’

Harry did not see the King during the trip, with the Duke releasing a statement that said his father did not have time to meet with him.

The source added: ‘It makes Harry’s decision to stay in a hotel all the more strange when the Palace would naturally offer all the security you could wish for.

‘It would also have made more sense from a point of view of seeing his father as it would be easier for the King to see his son if they were staying nearby.’

On his latest trip, Harry chose to stay at Althorp – the 13,000-acre estate where Earl Spencer and Diana grew up with their two sisters – which is a hugely poignant location for him.

Harry revealed in his controversial memoir Spare in January last year that Meghan kneeled and put her palms on Diana’s grave at the estate in 2017 and asked his late mother for ‘clarity and guidance’.

On the 20th anniversary of her death, Harry and Meghan had rowed out to Diana’s final resting place on an island. After some time reflecting, he sensed Meghan wanted a moment to herself by the site.

‘When I returned, she was on her knees with her eyes closed and her palms flat against the stone,’ Harry wrote.

In May, Earl Spencer revealed he was overcome with emotion when a friend gave him a hand-made canoe as a present for his 60th birthday.

The gift was constructed by the friend’s husband who said: ‘I just thought it would be useful when you visit your sister.’

Diana was buried on a small island in the middle of the lake, which can be reached only by boat.

Earl Spencer had originally planned to lay Diana to rest in the family tombs at a local church, but said he was concerned about her safety.

On Saturday, he marked the anniversary of his sister’s death in 1997 by paying tribute on on Instagram, sharing a series of newspaper cuttings from her early life.

Diana died in a car crash in Paris when Harry was just 12 years old.

It comes as separate reports emerged last night that Harry has ‘no interest’ in leaving the US and returning to royal duties in Britain.

The Duke has reportedly sought advice from trusted former aides on how to mastermind a return to the UK – nearly five years after he and Meghan stepped down as senior royals.

But sources close to Harry, who turns 40 this month, told the Daily Telegraph that he is settled in California with Meghan, 43, and their children Archie, five, and Lilibet, three.

They also claim that Harry has an ‘amazing’ new set of friends in the US and several projects on the horizon. He is preparing for a trip to New York where he will take part in charity engagements.

According to The Mail on Sunday, he has turned away from his ‘Hollywood publicists’ and resorted to texting former confidants ‘from his old life’ on how to mastermind a return from exile in the US.

They are reportedly willing to help him build bridges with his old life in Britain, with some referring to it as ‘Operation Bring Harry In From The Cold’.

It was said that marked the first stage in a potential strategy to ‘rehabilitate’ Harry and repair his relationship with King Charles.

Harry has also chosen not to update Spare ahead of its release in paperback next month, nor to give interviews to publicise it, which could be seen as an olive branch.

But William is still understood to be deeply hurt by Harry’s sustained attacks on his family.

According to friends, he does not discuss Harry, and is instead focusing on his wife, Kate – who is still undergoing treatment for cancer – their children and his work.

The brothers are not believed to have spoken properly for two years.

Harry flew out of Los Angeles on Tuesday and slipped into the UK without fanfare.

The prince, who is suing the UK Home Office for withdrawing his police protection when he quit royal duties and left the UK and says it is unsafe to bring his wife or family here, then travelled to Norfolk to attend the memorial.

Harry, whose PR team had previously briefed friendly media to say he would not be flying to the UK for the funeral, is not believed to have travelled on to meet with his father at Balmoral.

King Charles III has been in residence at his Scottish estate with Queen Camilla.

Harry and Charles last saw each other briefly back in February, when the prince flew to the UK from California for a meeting that lasted barely 30 minutes after Charles’s cancer diagnosis was announced.

Harry then returned to London once more, in May, but his father’s diary was full with work and his cancer treatment, and they did not meet.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Harry and Meghan have parted company with another American PR adviser, Christine Weil Schirmer, the tenth staff member to leave in three years. She has joined PR giant Brunswick.

Lord Fellowes, who died on July 29 aged 82, was married to Diana’s sister Lady Jane Fellowes.

He was a long-time Buckingham Palace courtier who worked for Queen Elizabeth II for 22 years until 1999.

This was a period which covered both the breakdown of his sister-in-law’s marriage to then-Prince Charles and her death in 1997.

David Beckham holds the belief that the United States men’s national team will eventually, one day, win the World Cup.

He also believes that his acquisition of Lionel Messi to Inter Miami will help inspire younger generations in order to achieve that goal.

Speaking on an episode of First We Feast’s ‘Hot Ones’, Beckham shared with host Sean Evans that he believes acquiring Messi will help the USMNT towards that ultimate goal.

‘There’s only so far you can go on the business talk and contract talks. I think player to player, I think it makes a huge difference. And I came at it as a player that had obviously moved from Real Madrid to the LA Galaxy.

‘It’s a gift in the sense of, I want to inspire the next generation of young kids that are playing in this country, because at some point, the US will win the World Cup. At some point.

‘It needs moments like this where you bring someone of Leo’s magnitude. He’s good on the field, he’s good off the field, he’s the perfect professional.

‘If you bring someone like that, then all of these young kids that are watching throughout America, going to watch him in their stadiums, in their city, get inspired. That’s really what we wanted to do.’

At the present moment, the United States men’s national team is at something of a crossroads.

Over the summer, they crashed out of the Copa America in the group stage after a win over Bolivia was followed up with a stunning loss to Panama and, ultimately, another defeat to Uruguay.

That embarrassment led the USMNT to firing coach Gregg Berhalter and began an international search for its next coach before hosting a majority of games at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Multiple sources have reported that the next manager of the team will be Mauricio Pochettino, however no official announcement has been made or planned.

The United States will be playing its next game in Kansas City when they take on cross-border rivals Canada in a friendly.

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: King Charles is saved some awkwardness thanks to a low key memorial service for the late Queen’s private secretary Robert Fellowes

The low key memorial service for the late Queen’s private secretary Robert Fellowes saved the King some awkwardness.

Fellowes was Princess Diana’s brother-in-law and guided the Queen through her death and its aftermath. He earned the ire of the King when he led opposition to Camilla coming out of the shadows and being accepted as the King’s wife-in-waiting.

Had his funeral and memorial services been public, events protocol dictated that the King and Queen – who were absent and not represented – would have had to send an emissary to formally represent them.

And Prince Harry’s appearance also thwarted Lord Fellowes’ plan for a no-fuss send-off.

The service, in a Norfolk church close to Sandringham, might have passed unnoticed if nephew Harry hadn’t flown in to say his farewells.

Post memorial Harry clearly wasn’t invited to stay overnight at brother William’s Anmer Hall less than ten miles from the church.

Instead, he opted for the 90-mile journey to stay with his uncle Charles at Althorp. A far cry from Meghan’s first Sandringham Christmas in 2017.

The Ocean’s 11 star has been the coffee brand’s face in Europe since 2006.

As part of the deal, the David will give fans an insight into the coffee moments he has alone or shares with family and friends.

In November last year, he shared a promotional clip to his Instagram and captioned it: ‘Things have been brewing… ☕️ As somebody who loves coffee, I’m very excited to be joining the Nespresso family.’

The star also posted a coffee advert in January.

David’s New Year campaign saw him sipping on the brand’s Vivida B12 coffee and reading a newspaper in a leafy garden as he modelled a cable knit jumper.

And David’s love of coffee could be part of his move to swap the bright lights of celebrity and stardom with the quieter life of the countryside.

The sportsman is seemingly living ‘The Good Life’ in the £6million Cotswolds farmhouse he shares with his wife Victoria.

Over the years, and more frequently in recent times, he has shared snippets of what he gets up to at his rural home with his family, following his retirement from football more than a decade ago.

David’s relaxing new way of life includes getting excited at his chickens laying ‘lovely’ eggs and showing his followers how to plant a rose shrub, as well as showing off his latest harvests.

Back in June David joked his wife Victoria, 50, would be eating spring onions for lunch and dinner after a successful harvest.

He wrote: ‘Looks like @victoriabeckham has a few spring onions for lunch and dinner for the next few weeks How am I doing @alatichmarshmbe.’

David added he was suffering from hay fever, but it certainly didn’t stop from continuing his outdoor occupations.

The Loose Women live studio audience erupted as a piece of the set, while host Jane Moore joked about the ‘scenery falling down’

The Loose Women studio was thrown into chaos on Wednesday morning as part of the set collapsed during the live show.

The panel in the ITV studio consisted of host Jane Moore and Linda Robson, Denise Welch and Paris Fury.

Yet as the women made a transition to the next segment of the midday show, a panel behind Paris fell to the floor in the studio.

The live studio audience erupted as the set piece collapsed, while Jane joked about the ‘scenery falling down’.

The panellists remained calm as part of the set hung suspended in the air, and Denise cackled with laughter as she joked: “No expense spared on this show.”

The show producers then cut away from a wide shot of the studio and when Loose Women returned from an advertising break, the panel had been replaced.

The moment came after earlier in the show, Denise said she is ‘fuming’ over Matt Hancock ’s casting on the upcoming series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

The ITV panel turned their attention to the highly anticipated reality show as Denise ripped into the former Health Secretary’s decision to enter the jungle.

She said she is ‘disgusted’ at the news and has been unable to ‘find the humour’ in the announcement of his inclusion in the line-up.

She said: “As far as I’m concerned we are still suffering the repercussions of what happened over the last few years.

“I was very vocal about Covid restrictions – some being incredibly unnecessary and the impact they would have on people’s livelihoods and mental health.”

She continued: “Matt Hancock was at the forefront of those. We all know now that we weren’t allowed to see our granny or anybody who had a family member in hospital or a home during Covid.

“My dad subsequently died of pneumonia. I wasn’t allowed to see him at certain times. I live with the pain of that every day.

“We could say, I will do a test before I go and visit my dad who is lonely in his house – no.”

“I’ve never envied people going in the jungle – I love the show and I’m a huge viewer – but I’d go in there for nought for one hour.”

Loose Women star Denise Welch has slammed Matt Hancock after he joined the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! cast

Loose Women star Denise Welch has said she is ‘fuming’ over Matt Hancock ’s casting on the upcoming series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

The West Suffolk MP has defended his decision to appear on the ITV reality show in Australia, saying it is a ‘powerful tool’ to reach young people.

Yet Mr Hancock – who has arrived in Brisbane ahead of the show’s launch on Sunday – has faced criticism over the decision and was yesterday suspended as a Conservative MP.

On Wednesday’s Loose Women, the ITV panel turned to the highly anticipated reality show as Denise ripped into the former Health Secretary’s decision to enter the jungle.

She said she is ‘disgusted’ at the news and has been unable to ‘find the humour’ in the announcement of his inclusion in the line-up.

ITV)This comes after the independent MP’s colleague Isabel Oakeshott opened up about the behind the scenes decision-making process after Mr Hancock touched down in Brisbane ahead of the show launch this weekend.

She said the decision was ‘very last minute’ but noted she did discuss it with Mr Hancock before it was made known to the public yesterday.

She said: “He did ask me what I thought and whether I thought it was a good idea. Obviously I presented the pros and cons.

“Before I knew it, he had disappeared off to Australia. So I think this was a pretty last minute decision. Although, he has said publicly he’s twice turned it down before.”

Strictly’s Fleur and Vito address ‘fix’ row as they confirm dance-off fall allowed restart

Strictly Come Dancing has been hit with fresh claims the BBC One show is “fixed” after Fleur East and Vito Coppola fell while performing – but viewers at home never saw it

Strictly Come Dancing stars Fleur East and her professional dance partner Vito Coppola have addressed a fix row that has erupted around reports footage of their dance-off was cut from the broadcast.

The latest Halloween special episode, which was recorded on Saturday and aired the following day, saw Fleur, 35, take on EastEnders actor James Bye in the dreaded dance-off.

However, there was one moment which didn’t make the final broadcast, as a source claimed this week that the pair fell to the ground.

The pair were then reportedly allowed to restart their dance, and went on to win the dance-off against James Bye and Amy Dowden, who became the latest stars to exit the show.

The pair addressed the reports during an appearance on Loose Women on Thursday afternoon, as they sat down with host Kaye Adams, who was eliminated from the BBC One ballroom dancing show in the first week.

Explaining the fall, Vito clarified it had been him that took a tumble, as opposed to Fleur, as was previously reported.

He told the panel: “Basically, in the first few seconds of our number, I just fell down on the chair.

“Everyone was gasping there. But luckily they made sure that I was okay, so we were able to restart. I’m fine. I’m here today.”

Panellist Denise Welch clarified the decision to restart was made due to health and safety, as the pair were checked by medical staff on hand.

Vito continued: “We were continuing, because we always say to each other, ‘If anything happens, let’s just keep going’.

“I was trying to stand up and continue, when I turned Fleur was spinning away.”

Smiling, Fleur added: “I was ready. I was like, ‘The show must go on’. Then production decided to stop the music and we were like, ‘Oh, okay’.”

“As they had not begun to dance before the incident occurred, it was decided they could start the performance again, once it was confirmed they were fit to do so.”
