In a brutal take-down, the usually placid television industry bible The Hollywood Reporter has labelled Meghan ‘Duchess Difficult’

Whether they didn’t get an invite or declined to go, their attendance at the event would have made the couple appear at least sanguine in the wake of the article which talked about her working practices, saying she was ‘just terrible’, ‘a dictator in high heels’ and had ‘made grown men cry’.

However, for whatever reason, the pair stayed home.

It matters if you work in TV and don’t go to the Emmys. People notice and judge which rung of the ladder you are on accordingly.

One senior figure, who has watched Harry and Meghan’s progress in Hollywood with interest, said this week that they seem to be reaping the kind of ‘schadenfreude with extra venom’ at which the entertainment business excels.

He adds: ‘It was only a matter of time before the industry Press started taking shots. It’s hard to find anyone with a good word to say for their film and television credibility.’

The article in The Hollywood Reporter was published on September 12. Headed: Why Hollywood Keeps Quitting on Harry and Meghan, it was ostensibly about their chief of staff, Josh Kettler, leaving after only three months, as first revealed in this newspaper by Richard Eden in his diary pages.

It mentioned their woeful record in hanging onto staff with those leaving including Toya Holness, their global press secretary until 2022, Christine Weil Schirmer, who quit as Harry and Meghan’s PR head in 2021 and Keleigh Thomas Morgan of Sunshine Sachs who stopped looking after the couple around the same time. Others who have left include Catherine St-Laurent, once head of the Sussexes’ charity Archewell, Archewell COO Mandana Dayani; content chief Ben Browning and marketing chief Fara Taylor.

A source claimed to the ­Hollywood Reporter: ‘Everyone’s terrified of Meghan. She belittles people, she doesn’t take advice. They’re both poor decision-­makers, they change their minds frequently. Harry is a very, very charming person — no airs at all — but he’s very much an enabler. And she’s just terrible.’

Another source said: ‘She’s ­absolutely relentless. She marches around like a dictator in high heels, fuming and barking orders. I’ve watched her reduce grown men to tears.’

The startling allegations – described by a source close to the couple as ‘inaccurate’ and ‘one-sided’ – recall the kerfuffle in 2018 over whether Meghan had bullied staff at Buckingham Palace. There was an investigation after complaints and concerns were raised, but its results have never been made public.

Meghan strenuously denied the ­allegations and denounced them as part of a ­’calculated smear campaign’.

In all, the Hollywood Reporter article was just the kind of ­unflattering ‘hit piece’ which you might expect the talent agency WME to have strangled at birth for their client, Meghan. One senior Hollywood publicist tells me: ‘First of all, everyone industry-wide, EVERYONE reads The Hollywood Reporter. It’s really striking that WME did not stop this running.’

She adds: ‘WME normally – you would think – would have been threatening and denying access to other stars. Was this done here?

‘The only thing the Sussexes could rally with was ‘no comment at this time’ from a spokesman.’

And perhaps even worse it came only weeks after another take-down in an industry publication.

That was part of a feature about the ‘worst deals’ of the ‘peak TV period’ which ran on the Hollywood news website, Puck. Again, the site – run by former Hollywood Reporter editor Matt Belloni and with a quarter of a million subscribers – is a must-read in the industry.

Harry and Meghan’s reported $100 million Netflix deal (which runs out next September) was mentioned in the same breath as Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who signed a mega-deal with Amazon in 2019 that has yet to yield a single minute of ­television drama.

Published on August 20, it woundingly misspelled Archewell as ‘Archwell’.

Of Harry and Meghan it notes: ‘The streamer is not expected to renew its five-year, $100 million deal signed in 2020 . . . Meghan’s passion project, the animated kids show Pearl, had already been canceled’.

A senior producer says: ‘I don’t think mainstream Hollywood ever took them seriously. From day one Archewell felt to most industry onlookers more like a brand ­building exercise than a genuine production operation. Netflix were handing out vanity deals like candy at the time and so everybody just shrugged their shoulders and assumed their company wouldn’t get much done despite the generous backing.

‘But even Harry and Meghan ­naysayers would have been shocked at how little they’ve ­actually achieved.’

‘And in the more austere climate of the industry in 2024 when thousands of people have lost jobs and the entertainment industry economy is struggling, there’s now a genuine dislike and distrust towards them by some.’

All of which might make their handlers feel a little nervous about the fate of that cookery show which will embrace Meghan’s love of ‘gardening’, ‘entertaining’ and ‘friendship’ alongside recipes. It is as yet untitled.

The show will mark a significant moment for Meghan as it’s also going to launch her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard (ARO). All that has happened so far is that lawyers acting for the ­Duchess have sought to trademark the name and a logo for dozens of uses – and not been approved on various grounds.

Not, perhaps, the most promising start.

Netflix is understood to have offered to run the ARO brand for Meghan, which makes sense as it has huge experience of global marketing and merchandising. And Netflix boss Ted Sarandos, in London this week for the Royal Television Society conference, is a voice on her side. He said of Meghan: ‘I’ve been out with a lot of famous people before – the way that people react to Meghan is otherworldly.’

What are we to expect from Meghan’s cookery offering? The episodes are being directed by veteran Michael Steed, who worked with the revered chef Anthony Bourdain.

The show-runner with overall responsibility for it is yoga enthusiast Leah Hariton, who previously made Selena + Chef in 2020 featuring actress Selena Gomez. The shows are being produced for Netflix by The Intellectual Property Corporation, an off-shoot of Sony Pictures Television.

Archewell’s head of unscripted content, Chanel Pysnik, will be one of the executive producers, as will Meghan. Unusually, none of this information has been lodged with the production website IMDB, which is what you would expect to happen as standard.

It’s a very Meghan way of working – she likes to keep everything she can secret until the last possible moment.

Her working practices, according to a source with direct knowledge, are a little unorthodox. I’m told there is little separation between different projects and different arms of Archewell, so those involved in TV production can find themselves talking about charity work and vice versa.

Along with the desire for secrecy about projects, there is a passionate engagement with the manner and timing of any announcements. There are no offices – the couple take meetings at home, both often barefoot.

For the cookery show, which will be accompanied by a cookbook, I hear Meghan is taking advice from model Chrissy Teigen, who’s made cookery shows and released cookbooks herself in the past.

She and Meghan seem to have become close – she was given some of the early batch of ARO jam that went to famous friends.

Others on Meghan’s side include Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner and comedian and TV host Ellen de Generes, probably one of her closest remaining friends in Hollywood. Another is make-up magnate Victoria Jackson, whose brand she plugged for free by wearing it at the ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) awards in July, where Harry won an award for his work with military veterans via the Invictus Games Foundation.

Meghan allowed her make-up artist and Ms Jackson to post on Instagram about it.

TV producer Tyler Perry, godfather to daughter Lillibet, also remains on side.

Some notable friends may have fallen away, though. The Clooneys, who attended their 2018 wedding, and hosted the couple in Lake Como the summer after, seem to have less connection to them nowadays.

Harry and Meghan were not seen at the Clooneys’ annual humanitarian awards in New York. They have also not been spotted at any parties thrown by their neighbour Oprah, who conducted that interview with the Sussexes back in 2021.

The Obamas haven’t been pictured with them for years – Harry and Michelle Obama were once close but the Sussexes were not guests at Barack’s star-studded 60th birthday party on Martha’s Vineyard in the summer of 2021.

Despite all this, a source close to the couple has said that Meghan could be set to reveal even more in a new tell-all memoir after the family were not invited to Balmoral this summer.

A source told Closer: “The talk among their friends is that it’s time to take the gloves off and do away with the diplomacy.

“There’s so much demand for Meghan to speak out, whether that’s in the form of another sit-down interview or even her own memoir. She has the potential to make an absolute fortune and clear up a lot of questions.”

The source said the memoir could be a “big tell-all from Meghan where she completely lays out her side of the story.”

Carole’s son James has reflected on his testing time at school which left his mother distraught and his father lamenting the cost.

Carole Middleton was left “reduced to tears” as she became concerned about her son’s education, according to a new biography.

The concern came about as Carole and her husband Michael discussed whether their son James’s £32,000-a-year education was worth the sizeable fee they were paying.

James, who is Princess Kate’s younger brother, has told of how he had to retake an A-level chemistry course four times. He studied at the prestigious Marlborough College in Wiltshire, the same school his sisters Kate and Pippa went to.

In his memoir titled ‘Meet Ella’, James recalled how his mum was left distraught after his father said the private education was a “waste of money.”

He wrote: “Meanwhile, I do so badly in my final school exams that my poor mum is reduced to tears. Dad says my expensive education has been ‘a waste of money’.

“After a year of resitting my A-levels, I scrape into Edinburgh University with the minimum permitted grades.” Speaking to The Times, James added: “Mum and Dad just wanted the best for me.”

The outlet added: “Today Middleton studiously avoids criticising his school or his beloved parents — he learnt valuable survival skills at Marlborough, he tells me.”

James says he sought happiness from his interest in nature and dogs as the pressure of school took its toll. He continued: “I was an outcast … alienated from my classmates. But dogs never judged me.

“Mum asked repeatedly if I wanted to bring friends home to stay at weekends. But truthfully all I wanted to do was to see Tilly.”

James eventually went to Edinburgh University to study Criminology, Environmental studies, and Geography modules.

He joked that he chose these because he was “pretty certain they would all be multiple choice”.

He then went on to fail his first-year exams. Reflecting on this, the Times added: “More crying from Mum, more exasperation from Dad, more solace from a dog, this time his own.”

Prince Harry spoke about the importance of mental wellness and climate action as he kickstarted his whirlwind solo trip to New York.

The Duke of Sussex, 40, took to the stage for a Diana Award event in Manhattan on Monday afternoon as part of the 14th Concordia Annual Summit.

The charity, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, was set up in honour of the Princess of Wales and works to create positive change for young people.

His wife Meghan Markle has stayed at home with their two children, Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three after she skipped a benefit organised by Kevin Costner on Saturday evening, leaving Harry to attend on his own.

At the panel event, Harry was joined by the charity’s chief executive Tessy Ojo and two winners of the Diana Legacy Award, Chiara Riyanti Hutapea Zhang, 18, from Indonesia, and Christina Williams, 27, from Jamaica.

Wearing a gold Diana Award badge on the lapel of his dark suit, the King’s youngest son spoke about the importance of mental wellness at a panel event where participants talked about climate anxiety.

Discussing mental health, Harry said: “It affects every single one of us, from the top to bottom, from the youngest to the oldest.

“And I think you guys are leading the charge in hopefully being able to break down the stigma to be able to continue these conversations.”

He also suggested replacing the well-known phrase “mental health” with “mental fitness”.

The duke added: “I know that my mum would be incredibly proud of you guys, not just you, but all of the winners, and, Tessy – you’ve been in this for a very long time so thank you for that as well.

“But the way that you do it, your activism, your compassion, those two things are so true to how my mom led her life and what she believed in. And the way that you do it is incredible. So thank you.”

Harry followed the panel discussion by attending an with the Halo Trust, the landmine clearance charity supported by Diana, and attending a private engagement with conservation group African Parks.

Harry arrived in New York on Sunday for a jam-packed visit supporting his patronages and causes he cares deeply about.

His trip started with a dinner organised by the World Health Organization on Sunday night, where he warmly greeted Queen Mathilde of Belgium and chatted with other dignitaries, UN Agency Heads at an event which focused on violence against children and its impact on mental health.

The duke, who celebrated his milestone 40th birthday a week ago, is forging ahead with his charity work after describing how fatherhood has given him a renewed sense of purpose to make “this world a better place”.

Tomorrow Harry will discuss finding solutions to global challenges with former US president Bill Clinton, his daughter Chelsea Clinton, WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, US broadcaster Katie Couric and primatologist Jane Goodall.

Other events on Tuesday see the duke focus on Lesotho, the impoverished southern African country where he set up his Sentebale charity to support Aids orphans, and the Travalyst organisation, which aims to encourage the tourism sector to become more sustainable.

‘He made sure we had no nerves at all… He is just so kind-hearted. Not only was he helping us get comfortable with speaking on stage, but he comforted us after as well,’ added the award recipient.

Harry, who cracked his knuckles and looked nervous as he sat down on stage, spoke of the importance of mental wellness at the event, where participants talked about their climate anxiety.

He personally interviewed Chiara Riyanti Hutapea Zhang from Indonesia and Christina Williams from Jamaica, who received The Legacy Award in memory of Princess Diana, joking: ‘For some reason I’ve been given the microphone to ask the questions.’

He told them: ‘I applaud you for having the confidence to be on this stage. I know my mother would be incredibly proud of you guys. Your activism is true to how my mother lived her life.’

Harry, wearing a navy suit and tie with a Diana Award pin on his lapel, asked: ‘Do you feel like leaders and people in positions of power are listening to you?’, adding that he wanted the The Diana Award to help their campaigning to tackle climate change and bring influence around the world.

And when asked what gives him hope for the future he said: ‘I have said it before years ago and I’ll say it again. The younger generation is what gives me hope. The courage you have gives me hope.

‘Everyone of us needs courage to move the dial in this world, probably more than ever. We need to listen and act on what you say because it is your future that will be stolen and that is unacceptable’.

The Duke of Sussex is away from Montecito for the next eight days and went to a California benefit organised by Kevin Costner on Saturday, without his American wife.

Before his attendance at Monday’s event, the night before Harry was seen greeting Queen Mathilde of Belgium, actor Forest Whitaker, several UN Agency Heads, and other dignitaries, for an event to honour survivors of childhood violence.

All are in New York for the UN General Assembly, which kicked off Monday morning in Manhattan.

Officials from countries like Sweden, Colombia, Zimbabwe, Georgia, Canada, Iceland, and Brazil were also present, as were survivors of child abuse to discuss the important issue.

Also in attendance were high-profile figures like Whitaker and Shudu Musida, who, along with the survivors, helped pen an open letter last week demanding urgent action from world leaders to end violence against children.

This comes ahead of the first-ever Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, which is set to take place in Colombia in November.

Signatories of the letter included Harry, Mathilde, and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, who was seen conversing with the Duke of Sussex and actor at length during the event.

The Belgian royal spoke to the crowd as well, urging for more to be done to help kids facing corporal punishment, bullying, online violence and sexual abuse.

Other forms of violence singled out by the group include gang violence, child marriage and child labour.

Meghan, meanwhile, was nowhere to be seen, after championing efforts designed to halt online bullying earlier this summer.

The gathering came a day after Harry attended Kevin Costner ‘s charity concert at his beachfront estate solo, all the way across the country in California while Meghan was said to be ‘sick.’
