Kym Marsh breaks down in tears as she presents midwife Agnes Nisbett with a Pride of Britain Award

The Pride of Britain Awards, sponsored by TSB, were held on Monday and were hosted by Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo – with a host of stars in attendance

Actress Kym Marsh was moved to tears when she presented incredible midwife Agnes Nisbett with an award at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards this week.

The yearly event celebrated its 25th anniversary on Monday night, with the UK’s fundraisers, awe-inspiring children, community heroes, young achievers and brave people being recognised with well-deserved awards. The night, hosted at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Monday, saw a host of stars celebrating the achievements.

One of the winners, Agnes Nisbett, was made the Community Hero thanks to her years of dedication to grieving mothers. The 87-year-old was a young midwife when she went through the heartbreak of stillbirth in 1973 and went on to provide women who experienced the same thing a sanctuary for grieving.

When Agnes returned to work many years ago after losing her son John, she was desperate to make a change as she had no keepsakes of him. She pioneered the Born Whilst Sleeping programme at Leicester Royal Infirmary and set aside a room for women where they could grieve away from other mums and their newborns in the main maternity ward. She also encouraged mothers to take photographs and palm prints to serve as treasured keepsakes.

The entire room was in tears watching Agnes’ story, with host Carol Vorderman telling Agnes that ‘two women grateful to you’ was going to present her award. Kym Marsh and Sue Johnston walked up on stage and were emotional as they thanked Agnes for her years of hard work.

Kym, who experienced the tragic loss of her child herself, was in tears as she told Agnes: “From one mother who has experienced baby loss to another, thank you. My son would have been 16 next year and there is no doubt you made the experience more bearable so from the bottom of my heart. Thank you.”

The mum-of-three, 48, and her ex-husband Jamie Lomas were heartbroken when their baby boy died in 2009 after being born prematurely at 21 weeks. Speaking previously about her loss, she shared: “It was the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. I was absolutely devastated. It’s the most painful thing I’ve ever felt.”

Monday night saw the Pride of Britain Awards host a number of A-listers to tears as they honoured the country’s unsung heroes. Celebrating a quarter-century of touching tributes, the glittering gala spotlighted community champions, remarkable fundraisers, brave youngsters and real-life rescuers, thanks to public nominations whittled down by a panel.

The winners were held at London’s luxurious Grosvenor Hotel with dinner and accolades presented by veteran hosts Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo, who’ve teamed up for the past five years. It was a star-studded evening with guests including Pete Wicks, Sam Thompson, Strictly’s shining stars, Simon Cowell and a bevy of other celebs, all moved by the powerful occasion.

Coleen Nolan caught off guard as Brenda Edwards mentions their ‘feud’ live on Loose Women

During a discussion about friendship, Loose Women stars Coleen Nolan and Brenda Edwards reacted to suspicions they didn’t get along off-screen, speaking of their real-life bond

Coleen Nolan was surprised when Brenda Edwards told her their differences had sometimes led people to believe they were embroiled in a full-blown feud.

Taking the helm of ITV’s Loose Women, Coleen, 59, hosted a special “prom” instalment of the programme, showing up to the studio alongside co-stars Katie Piper, Brenda Edwards and Frankie Bridge dressed to the nines in a sequined navy blue dress and chic up-do.

The presenter kicked off this Wednesday’s episode – shortened to half an hour due to horse racing – with a conversation around friendship, prompting Brenda, 55, to confess her “unlikely” friendship with Coleen was significant to her.

Coleen asked: “What is your most significant friendship?” to which the former X Factor star said: “Unlikely, with you”, leaving a surprised Coleen to retort: “Well, I don’t know where that’s coming from.”

Brenda went on to explain that the feud was only theorised by certain fans of their show. “A lot of people come to me and they keep saying ‘ so are you really friends with Coleen?’

“I think they think I’m so serious and you’re so funny so we can’t mix”, she added. “Are you serious? Well, that’s where they’re going wrong”, muttered Coleen, sipping from her mug.

The pair dismissed these suspicions with Brenda saying: “It surprises me when people say that because I think you’re lovely.” Coleen concluded: “We have got a really good friendship.”

But while Coleen and Brenda are on good terms, feuds have often shaken things up behind the Loose Women scenes and rumours of behind-the-scenes disagreements are far from recent.

Kaye Adams, who has recently taken a break from the panel due to her health, once told Metro.co.uk that tensions between hosts do sometimes exist.

She admitted that “there have” been times of tension between hosts, adding: “I’m not going to deny that there are occasions when people maybe have a bit of a beef with somebody else but it’s nothing that hasn’t been fixable.”

Kaye then added that no host ever refused to work with any one of their co-stars: “There’s nobody who will walk out of the door when somebody else walks in. Nobody refuses to work with anybody else.”

Back in 2022, reports also alleged that several Loose Women stars had refused to work with Coleen Nolan after it was reported she and her agent had clashed with co-star Nadia Sawalha.

However, an ITV spokesperson soon denied the rumour at the time, saying: “This story is untrue. Panellists are chosen for each show by the Loose Women Editor and senior production team, not the panellists themselves.”

Coleen herself had also spoken out on social media, most notably on X: “Nothing printed in The Mail article today is true & I am taking legal advice about the slurs on me personally. We’ll also be addressing it on @loosewomen. Thanks for your support. Love Coleen.”

Coleen Nolan, Brenda Edwards and their Loose Women co-stars celebrated a prom episode of their daytime show, prompting Katie Piper to reveal their dates to the rest of the studio

Two George Clooney and David Beckham lookalikes were invited to share the spotlight with Brenda Edwards and Coleen Nolan but viewers had nothing good to say about them.

Taking the helm of Loose Women, Coleen, 59, hosted a special “prom” instalment of the programme, showing up to the studio alongside co-stars Katie Piper, Brenda Edwards and Frankie Bridge dressed to the nines in a sequined navy blue dress and chic up-do this Wednesday.

Katie beamed in a red gown as she announced: “Please welcome Coleen your prom date, George Cloney. And Brenda, we didn’t you’d be able to resist his golden balls, it’s David Peckhim!”

Two men appeared in the studio, suited up and somewhat resembling the A-listers, but viewers at home took to X, otherwise known as Twitter, unimpressed.

“When you order George Clooney and David Beckam off Temu”, one of them quipped, while a second added: “Fella in a plastic Beckham mask.”

A third amused TV watcher chipped in: “David Beckham? More like David Peckham”, just as another slammed the “Worst lookalikes ever!” One final fan chimed in: “He looks sod all like George Clooney nor does the other one look like David Beckham.”

Messi and his wife caused an online uproar by revealing the downside behind the glamorous facade of Inter Miami and David Beckham (video)

Messi and Suarez’s absence from the MLS All-Star game (taking place at 7am on July 25 and accompanying events) gives them valuable time to enjoy a well-deserved vacation,

after playing continuously from the beginning of the year until the Copa America that just ended recently.

During this time, Inter Miami, after a series of 7 consecutive matches, winning 6 and losing only 1, to continue to lead the MLS Eastern Conference rankings

with 53 points after 25 matches, will also have a short break before returning to play the Leagues Cup group stage matches from July 28.

Messi and his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, along with Suarez’s family and friends, had a much-needed break and relaxation in Florida (USA).

The images of Messi enjoying his days off, posted by his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo on social network Instagram, have recently caused a stir among viewers.

Many people were surprised to see Messi still wearing protection on his injured right ankle while on vacation, despite his rapid recovery. According to Marca (Spain): “The fact that Messi is still wearing protection on his ankle does not mean that his injury is more serious than expected. It is just a precautionary measure, to avoid collisions and will help the injury recover on schedule”.

Messi and Suarez are expected to return to play for Inter Miami from early August, possibly in the Leagues Cup group stage matches.

Meanwhile, Messi’s long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, is also having a long vacation with his family in an area on the Red Sea, before returning to focus on Al Nassr Club to compete in the Saudi Pro League (Saudi Arabia).

Ronaldo and the Portuguese team said goodbye early in the quarter-finals of EURO 2024. The 39-year-old player determined that it would be the last EURO of his career, but left open the possibility of retirement. He will still play with Al Nassr in the 2024-2025 season, and is ready to negotiate a contract extension until June 2026. It is likely that Ronaldo still intends to play for the Portuguese team in the 2026 World Cup, when he is 41 years old.

David Beckham hopes to make fans understand him better after his documentary: “Perhaps they have always thought I’m just a handsome womanizer” (video)

David Beckham hopes his Netflix documentary shines a light on the importance of mental health.

The 49-year-old former soccer star faced a huge amount of criticism from fans

and pundits during his playing days, and David hopes that some lessons have been learned from his experience.

The former England captain – who released ‘Beckham’ in 2023 – told Variety: “I think that my takeaway from my documentary was how important mental health is.

Because, 20 years ago, nobody was talking about it. And nobody was taking it seriously.

“Now, it’s so great that people can actually talk about their feelings.”

David confessed to being hurt by some of the comments made about himself and his wife, Victoria.

He shared: “There were many things said about us over the 27 years. It can be hurtful.”

Despite this, David recognises that he still has a lot to be “thankful for”.

The sporting icon – who played for the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid – said: “I was never one of these people that was going to sit back and complain.

“I was very fortunate to live the life that I did through my career. And I’m so thankful for that.”

Meanwhile, David has admitted to feeling proud of his children, insisting that they’re not affected by their own fame.

The soccer legend observed that his kids are all “humble” and “passionate” people.

David – who has Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 12, with Victoria – said: “They’re humble, hardworking, passionate. They’ve got drive. And ultimately, they’re good human beings.

“Living the life that they’ve lived, living in different countries, being around the whole circus that went on for our life, they could have been a lot different.”

Christine Lampard had to step in and issue an apology to Loose Women viewers as Linda Robson swore during her interview

Linda Robson joined stand-in Lorraine host Christine Lampard on Friday to discuss a number of topics including her dream soap role, family life and supporting NHS workers.

But the host had to issue an apology when Linda revealed which soap she most wanted to work on.

Christine remarked: “There’s one thing on the list and it’s EastEnders isn’t it?”

“Oh yeah, I did do one wartime one Sibby Street years ago, I played Lou Bill’s sister Flo Bill but I have hinted a few times that even a little cameo role or whatever but I’d love to play a real b***h,” Linda replied.

Christine began laughing as Linda continued: “Or someone really nasty because I always get light parts.”

The host cut in: “You know it’s a funny thing because I thought, she knows it’s early morning, she’s not allowed to swear for me and you just let a little one slip so I’m sorry if no one likes that word.”

“What the B word?” asked Linda, as Christine scolded: “Don’t say any other words!”

The Loose Women host replied: “I didn’t realise it was a bad word,” as Christine explained they often had to tell her not to swear on Loose Women.

Linda’s appearance comes after she opened up on Loose Women co-star Ruth Langsford’s split from Eamonn Holmes. Speaking at the National Reality TV Awards, she told OK!: “We’re staying out of it because it’s not our business but we’re supporting her in any way we can and just keeping her happy. It’s sad for the both of them but just keeping her spirits high.”

Ruth returned to hosting duties on Loose Women last month but failed to address the split live on air.

Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes announced their split in May after 14 years of marriage, and now Ruth’s Loose Women co-star Linda Robson has opened up on how she is doing

Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes decided to part ways after 14 years of marriage, a decision announced back in May.

Linda Robson, Ruth’s colleague on Loose Women, has now opened up about how she’s been there for Ruth during this tough time. Speaking at the National Reality TV Awards, 66-year-old Linda shared that Ruth is “keeping her spirits high” following the breakup.

“We’re staying out of it because it’s not our business but we’re supporting her in any way we can and just keeping her happy. It’s sad for the both of them but just keeping her spirits high,” she told OK! Magazine at last night’s ceremony.

Post-split, Eamonn, 64, who is now with GB News, seems to be finding solace with counsellor Katie Alexander, 42. Meanwhile, Ruth has been immersing herself in her work commitments.

The former couple, parents to 22-year-old Jack, have remained quite private about their separation, offering only a brief official statement which read: “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”

Speculation had been rife about the state of their relationship as they hadn’t been seen together for some time before the confirmation of their divorce. Although neither Ruth nor Eamonn have publicly disclosed the reasons behind their split, there’s been plenty of gossip about what might have led to the end of their union.

Ruth’s role as a ‘carer’ rather than wife has been highlighted due to Eamonn’s ongoing health struggles, with one insider revealing the strain it’s put on their marriage. Eamonn has faced a tough time with his health, having had spinal surgery in 2022 and a double-hip replacement in 2016, which Ruth has acknowledged as affecting their dynamic.

Linda is also familiar with the challenges of a public breakup, having recently ended her 33-year marriage to Mark Dunford. Addressing the rumours last November, Linda declared “Enough is enough” and assured everyone she was “fine”.

In an interview with Woman magazine, Linda opened up: “He’s a really good dad and we had some good years, but enough is enough. I’ve got my family and my kids around me.”

The couple, who tied the knot in 1990, share two children, Louis, 31, and Roberta, 27. Linda, who also has daughter Lauren, 40, from a previous relationship with Tony Tyler, expressed her disinterest in dating: “I’m not interested [in dating] honestly. I can’t be a***d with all that”.

Meghan Markle is seen wearing her £140,000 engagement ring for the first time in 9 months – after having it ‘serviced because a setting came loose’

Meghan Markle made a dazzling appearance in the Whistler ski resort in British Colombia yesterday, thanks to the reappearance of her £140,000 engagement ring.

The Duchess has not been seen publicly wearing the glittering band, comprising one huge Botswana diamond and two from Princess Diana‘s collection since May 2023.

Her ring was conspicuously absent at recent events, such as the premiere of Bob Marley biopic One Love in Kingston, Jamaica last month, and her attendance at the Variety’s Power of Women gala in November 2023.

According to People magazine the reason behind the ring’s long hiatus is that a setting came loose and it needed to be serviced.

Prince Harry proposed to Meghan in November 2017, with the ring comprising of a solid yellow gold band set with three diamonds, but Meghan has made several tweaks to the design since.

As she appeared on the slopes with Prince Harry (plus their cameraman) and larked about on skis, the Duchess’s dazzling diamond complemented a chic winter outfit.

She donned a quilted cream coat from Calvin Klein costing $295, layered on top of a $695 cashmere jumper from CO.

Ensuring her feet were toasty in the freezing Whistler temperatures, the Duchess wore a pair of furry boots from Sorel – quirkily named the Joan of Arctic design.

However, the Duchess’s stunning rock was the star of the outfit, and instead of covering up her hands with a pair of heavy-duty gloves, she proudly displayed the ring on her finger.

It is the first time mother-of-two Meghan has been spotted wearing the band for around nine months amid reports she was having it fixed.

She has instead been spotted wearing different, subtle yet chic rings on her finger – such as when she had lunch in California with her pals Cleo Wade and Kadi Lee. They are believed to be her wedding band and an eternity ring.

Harry waves to cheering fans as he and Meghan depart Whistler

During the Invictus Games in Germany last September, the Duchess was still without her engagement ring – but made up for its absence with a Shiffon and Co. pinky ring on her little finger.

In May, the Duchess was spotted hiking without her husband Prince Harry near their $14million Montecito mansion – hours after missing King Charles’ coronation.

Meghan was joined on the fresh-air outing by her friends, Markus Anderson and Heather Dorak, in California after celebrating her son Archie’s birthday.

However she was not wearing her glittering diamond ring for the occasion.

Later that month, the jewels were missing for a second time as she arrived at the Ms Foundation for Women’s 50th anniversary event at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in Manhattan.

During the event, Meghan was simply wearing her wedding band, which is in yellow gold to match Prince Harry’s, and an eternity ring, which she began wearing after her son Archie was born. It’s unknown why the ring was missing.

The tennis pinky ring, which is 18 carats and set in white-gold, retails for $2,800.

At the time of their engagement, the Duke spoke about creating Meghan’s ring with the help of jewellers Cleave and Company.

The custom design featured one diamond originally from Botswana (where the couple took a trip for their second date) and two smaller stones from Princess Diana’s collection.

At the time, he said: ‘The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s [Meghan’s] favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewellery collection, to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.’

Meghan called it ‘incredible’, explaining: ‘Everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of [Princess Diana’s stones] and obviously not being able to meet his mom, it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us.’

‘It’s incredibly special to be able to have this [ring], which sort of links where you come from and Botswana, which is important to us. It’s perfect.’

However the Duchess chose not to wear her engagement ring for a number of public engagements back in 2019 while pregnant with her son Archie.

When she appeared at Trooping the Colour that year, it emerged Meghan had altered the custom made engagement ring that Prince Harry designed for her.

At Trooping the Colour and at her Windsor Castle photo call with Prince Harry and newborn son Archie, the Duchess wore her three engagement diamonds set on a thin micro-pavé band.

Jewellery expert Arabel Lebrusan confirmed the ring had changed, and suggested it had been tweaked to make the original diamonds look bigger.

Arabel, owner the ethical jewellery brand Arabel Lebrusan, called the thinner band a popular trend, revealing: ‘Many celebrities do this, as the central stone looks bigger in comparison getting the wow factor.’

The jewellery expert pointed out the difference in the band, saying: ‘She now has little diamonds set down the sides of her engagement ring and the band also seems thinner than before.’

She also revealed that the glittering band only emphasised the Meghan’s diamonds, and added: ‘The diamond setting on the band looks like micro-set, this means there is very little metal in between the stones maximising the sparkle of the tiny diamonds.’

Arabel continued that she thought the new style suited the Duchess’ style ‘perfectly’, saying: ‘It does suit her style perfectly, and it fits her dainty fingers as well.’

Leora Moreno, owner of jewellery brand Leo With Love, said at the time the changes could have been changed to match Meghan’s eternity ring.

She explained: ‘It looks like the eternity ring has a channel pavé setting. The engagement ring looks to have an even smaller pavé setting, but perfectly matches the eternity band.’

The jeweller went on to explain the change may have been complex, saying that it required ‘fine skill and craftsmanship to change the band to something more delicate like a pavé setting.’

She added that that the modern style would suit Meghan for ‘years to come’ and was ‘the perfect combination of eye-catching and dainty’.

In 2022’s Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie claimed it was the Duke who altered Meghan’s ring.

In the biography, jeweller-to-the-stars Lorraine Schwartz said: “‘He’s the loveliest person ever. So romantic, so thoughtful.’”

The authors continued: ‘(So much so that Harry also thought to have Lorraine resize and reset Meghan’s engagement ring with a new diamond band.)’

Bryan Adams met Princess Diana on a plane and they instantly hit it off – but it was a song about her doomed marriage to Charles that really bonded the pair

He described her as ‘queen of all my dreams’ in his song Diana, declaring ‘The day that he married you, I nearly lost my mind’.

Now Bryan Adams has spoken for the first time about his friendship with the late Princess Diana, revealing it was sparked by her amusement at the lyrics he wrote about her.

The Canadian singer, now 64, was rumoured to have embarked on an affair with Diana in the 1990s, speculation which grew after his ex-girlfriend Cecilie Thomsen said publicly that ‘ours was a stormy relationship and Bryan’s affair with Diana didn’t make it any easier.’

But speaking recently, he avoided addressing the rumours, instead painting a picture of a touching friendship in which the pair ‘had a lot of really, really good conversations’ after meeting on a plane.

He told her he had used her name in a song and she replied: ‘Yes, I know, very funny. Actually I’d like to hear it again.’

He sent a copy to Kensington Palace and she invited him round for tea.

‘In fact it’s strange and surreal to think about. I really, really liked Diana, she was an amazing woman and a super-great inspiration,’ he said during the interview with the Sunday Times.

‘Meeting her was truly one of the greatest things that ever happened to me.’

Adams, best known for hits including Everything I Do (I Do It For You), Summer of 69 and Heaven, was one of several major pop stars who got to know Diana before her death in 1997.

A huge music fan whose love of pop began during her time at West Heath boarding school in Sevenoaks, Kent, she was delighted that her position as Princess of Wales gave her the opportunity to mingle with many of her idols, from Duran Duran to Elton John.

Duran Duran were famously her favourite group and she was believed to have danced in front of her mirror at Kensington Palace listening to their hit Girls On Film on her Sony Walkman.

She attended a string of their live shows and met them several times. At Diana’s memorial concert in 2006, Simon Le Bon said: ‘We are honoured that she always referred to Duran Duran as her favourite band as she was certainly our favourite princess.’

One of the band’s gigs, at London’s Dominion Theatre in 1983, could have ended in disaster due to an IRA plot to assassinate the princess and her then husband Prince Charles, but the man due to install the gelignite bomb was actually a police informant who foiled the plan.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, Duran Duran’s bassist said: ‘They wanted to kill Diana and Charles and everybody in the room. It was so shocking. We were only made aware of it years later, but it was very frightening.’

Last year, Taylor also revealed that the band’s music was a passion Diana shared with her two children.

‘When we met William and Harry, they said, ‘Oh, we used to sit in the back seat and mum would play Wild Boys and we’d sing along,’ he recalled.

‘That stuck with me, that the little boys would be going ‘Wild Boys!’ and that would be a moment for them.’

George Michael was another star with whom she shared a deep bond. The last series of The Crown features two of his songs – Fast Love and Spinning the Wheel – reflecting her longstanding friendship with the former Wham! star, who died in 2016.

The pair – two of the biggest celebrities of their time – first met in 1985 at the Live Aid concert at Wembley.

She reportedly had a crush on Michael and told him she found him ‘very gorgeous’, to which he responded: ‘Thank you ma’am – you’re pretty smashing yourself.’

According to Michael’s biographer James Gavin: ‘Thus began the awkward 12-year friendship between a smitten aristocrat and a closeted sex idol.’

The pair called each other ‘darling’ and Michael gave her a gold watch.

In 2011, he spoke of their relationship, saying: ‘I think we clicked in a way that was a little bit intangible, and it probably had more to do with our upbringing than anything else.

She was very like a lot of women that have been attracted to me in my life because they see something non-threatening.

Maybe because I take care of my sisters and I’m so protective of my sisters, women seem to smell that.’

He also suggested Diana would have liked the friendship to turn romantic, despite him being gay:

‘There were certain things that happened that made it clear she was very attracted to me. There was no question,’ he said, adding that they were never intimate as ‘I knew it would be a disastrous thing to do.’

He was devastated after her death in the Paris car crash in August 1997. Speaking after her funeral, he said it reminded him of the death of his mother, Lesley, six months earlier.

‘I bawled my eyes out. It was almost like I was reliving my mum’s funeral,’ he said.

It’s impossible to think about Diana’s funeral without recalling Sir Elton John’s moving performance of Candle in the Wind, with new lyrics written especially for her.

They met for the first time at Prince Andrew’s birthday party in 1981, and Sir Elton was struck by what he described as her ‘incredible social ease, an ability to make people feel totally comfortable in her company.’

They ‘immediately clicked’ and became firm friends. At Gianni Versace’s funeral just weeks before Diana’s own death, she was photographed leaning over to comfort Sir Elton, although he later claimed that what she’d actually said was, ‘God, I’d love a Polo.’

Just six weeks later he was devastated again when he learned of her fatal car crash.

It was Sir Richard Branson who, with the blessing of the Spencer family, approached Elton with the idea of rewriting his 1973 song Candle in the Wind – originally about Marilyn Monroe – for Diana’s funeral.

The opening lyrics were changed from ‘Goodbye Norma Jean, though I never knew you at all’ to ‘Goodbye England’s rose, may you ever grow in our hearts’ – ensuring Diana would be remembered as England’s rose.

Today is Prince Andrew’s birthday. But what is there to celebrate for the beleaguered royal?

At one time, Prince Andrew had it all.

Not just the Queen’s favourite son, he was a naval officer and decorated war hero whose dashing looks made him the ‘Playboy Prince’ – one of Britain’s most eligible men.

Recently, however, the Duke of York has become better known for one of the most extraordinary falls from grace ever experienced by a member of the Royal Family.

Today, he turns 64. But it is not clear how much celebration there will be at Royal Lodge, his grand home in Windsor Great Park.

Andrew’s ill-advised association with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein led him to be stripped of his royal patronages and military affiliations, and to his forced retreat from public life.

In 2015, Virginia Giuffre (formerly Roberts) claimed in a lawsuit that she had been made by Epstein to have sex with Prince Andrew on three separate occasions when she was 17.

Later, in 2021, Giuffre filed a lawsuit against the prince over the alleged encounters. He denied the claims repeatedly, but in 2022, settled the case – while making no admission – with a payoff to Giuffre.

The Prince has strenuously denied all wrong doing and continues to do so. There is speculation that he had been under pressure to settle so as not to overshadow the Platinum Jubilee of his late mother, the Queen, that same year.

His reputation, however, remains in tatters.

The Epstein affair is far from the first time Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s third child has found himself at the centre of controversy.

Here, on his 64th birthday, Mail Online looks back over his life.

Born on 19 February 1960 at Buckingham Palace, Andrew Albert Christian Edward was the was the first child born to a reigning monarch in 103 years.

For the first 22 years of his life – until the birth of Prince William – he was the second in line to the throne: the spare to Prince Charles’s heir, enabling him to enjoy a freedom never available to his brother.

After his education at Heatherdown Preparatory School and Gordonstoun in Scotland, the latter famously loathed by Charles during his own time there, he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Navy in 1979.

In 1981, he achieved his childhood dream of becoming a pilot when he received his ‘wings’ and the best pilot award from Prince Philip.

In April 1982, he was sent to the Falkland Islands as part of the Royal Navy task force tasked with evicting Argentine invaders from the British territory, cutting a brave, adventurous figure as a helicopter pilot during the 10-week war.

It was for a particularly daring sort of mission that Andrew became famous: ‘decoying’ enemy anti-ship missiles. By the time Britain was victorious, causing the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s approval ratings to soar, Andrew had become a national hero, earning the nickname Randy Andy thanks to his liaisons with a string of beautiful women including the actress Koo Stark.

Soon after, Prince Andrew met Sarah Ferguson. Though they had known each other since they were children because Fergie’s father, retired army major Ronald, had played polo together when they were children, and her father was also the polo manager for Prince Charles, it was Princess Diana who set up her brother-in-law with the vivacious red-head in 1985.

‘We were made to sit next to each other,’ Andrew said of Diana’s matchmaking during their engagement interview. ‘It was at Ascot, as it were, that the whole thing took off.’

Andrew and Fergie were engaged just nine months later, and in July 1986 they were married at Westminster Abbey and given the titles of the Duke and Duchess of York by the Queen.

They had two children together, Princess Beatrice, born in August of 1988, and Princess Eugenie, born in March of 1990.

However, the marriage was soon beset by troubles, the most memorable of which involved pictures of Fergie having her toes sucked by American businessman John Bryan being splashed over the front pages of the newspapers in 1992.

Later, she said of that year, which the Queen dubbed her ‘annus horribilis’: ‘From early on that year, Andrew and I had been discussing a separation. Not because we’d stopped caring for one another, but because I had reached the end of my royal rope.’

They divorced in 1996, but remain close to this day, even sharing a home at Royal Lodge in Windsor.

After leaving active military service in 2001, Prince Andrew became the UK’s special representative for international trade and investment, but his 10 years in the role generated a great deal of controversy.

His associations with corrupt politicians in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tunisia, Libya and Turkmenistan raised concerns.

His judgment was questioned after he held meetings with Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s son Saif, and when he entertained the son-in-law of Tunisia’s ousted president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali at Buckingham Palace.

His relations with Timor Kulibayev, son-in-law of the president of Kazakhstan, were also scrutinised after Mr Kulibayev purchased the duke’s Sunninghill Park home for £3 million more than its £12 million asking price in 2007.

He also became known as ‘Air Miles Andy’ after spending thousands flying everywhere by helicopter, often managing to work a visit to the golf course into his working trips.

Indeed, it was often wondered what exactly the prince was doing on all these foreign jaunts. Simon Wilson, Britain’s deputy head of mission in Bahrain from 2001 to 2005, wrote in the Daily Mail that the duke was ‘more commonly known among the British diplomatic community in the Gulf as HBH: His Buffoon Highness.’

In 2010, Fergie had to apologise for a ‘serious lapse in judgement’ after she was exposed by a News of the World sting operation by Mazher Mahmood, the ‘fake sheikh’, in which she promised to obtain access to her former husband in return for £500,000.

The following year, Andrew’s trade envoy career came to a halt following the revelation that he was friends with the American financier Epstein, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2008 for soliciting a minor for prostitution.

Photographs of the two walking in Central Park surfaced — after Epstein had served his time in jail. It was later revealed that Andrew had previously stayed at Epstein’s homes in Florida and Manhattan.

Following Epstein’s suicide in August 2019, the duke decided to give a ‘no holds barred’ interview to BBC’s Newsnight about his former friendship with the convicted sex offender. It was an unmitigated disaster.

He denied ever meeting Giuffre, offering a series of bizarre excuses to demonstrate why her claims he had sex with her were false, including that he was not able to sweat, that he was in Pizza Express in Woking, and that he had a tendency to be ‘too honourable’.

It has been reported that, failing to realise the interview had been a catastrophe,  Prince Andrew had initially been pleased with his performance.

But his words opened the door to Giuffre’s legal action against him, which was settled, apparently with his mother’s money, in 2022.

Devastatingly for him, it was with the Queen’s approval that he was stripped of his royal duties and titles.

Following the Queen’s death and Charles’s accession to the throne, it seems even less likely Andrew will regain a prominent public position within the family. The King and Prince William are both said to be determined that, while he remains part of teh family, there is no way back to royal duties.

There has also been speculation that the King wishes Andrew to leave his home of more than 20 years, Royal Lodge.

More recent reports, however, suggest the brothers have reached an agreement which will permit Andrew and Sarah to stay in the 30-room mansion.

The Yorks have a lot on their plates .

Last summer, Sarah was treated for breast cancer, and then in January, she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer. She continues to support her former husband, recently saying that she promised the Queen prior to her death that she would be there for him.

The pair have three grandchildren: Princess Beatrice’s baby girl Sienna Mapelli Mozzi, born in September 2021, and Princess Eugenie’s two children, August Brooksbank, born in February 2021, and Ernest, born in May 2023.

Their focus will no doubt be on Sarah’s health in the coming months, but if Prince Andrew was hoping the dust was starting to settle on his disgrace, that’s unlikely: Scoop, the Netflix drama based on his Newsnight interview, is set to screen in the spring.
