Exclusive: BBC Casualty’s Lucy-Jo Hudson left ‘sobbing’ after devastating child cancer storyline amid blood shortages

Lucy-Jo Hudson has revealed she was left ‘sobbing’ after discovering just how emotional her part would be in the recent BBC Casualty Christmas special episode last month

A BBC Casualty star “sobbed” as she read through her script for the Christmas special.

Lucy-Jo Hudson made her return to the Holby City emergency department, 14 years after she last appeared on the show. But this time, the Leeds-born actress had no idea just how much of an impact her involvement in the All I Want For Christmas episode would have. Throughout the episode, which aired on December 21, viewers at home were given an insight into the goings on of a real working hospital – dealing with low supplies of blood.

Over the years, Casualty has never shied away from giving viewers a glimpse of the chaos behind the scenes that patients often don’t see. But this time, the level of impact the show had saw a staggering rise in people signing up to give blood. Viewers heard from people who had previously relied on blood donations as people realised just how important it was to donate in order to save lives.

The show also received praised for the sensitive ways it handled the infected blood scandal which saw more than 30,000 people in the UK be given blood which had been infected with HIV and hepatitis C between the 1970s and 1980s. Speaking about her role on the show Lucy-Jo, 41, who played Adele in the special said: “It was amazing, they haven’t done a Christmas special for about seven years, when I read it and read the bits of the documentary style inserted into the drama, I thought ‘Oh my God, this is amazing,’ I was blown away by it, I thought it was very relatable.

“The fact that we brought in real life people who have gone through what we’re dramatising, I felt it was mega and something different. It set up the whole new series.” Fans saw Adele young daughter, Leah, display symptoms of meningitis, including a headache and tiredness. However, Adele had no idea what was in store for her. Leah was later diagnosed with leukemia and required an urgent blood transfusion.

“I’ve got kids myself, so you instantly resonate with the fact ‘This could be me, this is other mums out there,” Lucy-Jo said. “You’ve seen that in the special, you’ve seen that with the mother whose daughter has been diagnosed and how traumatic it is. I loved how it was written, I took my daughter in thinking ‘She’s not great, maybe its chickenpox or measles, or she’s got a viral bug. Never, ever did she expect to hear the C word – you don’t hear it or you don’t see it much, children getting diagnosed with it.

“You don’t want to hear or see that kids are going through such horrific times but it is, there’s children out there.” Lucy-Jo went on to reveal that she was aware of a young boy, known as Mighty Max who was going through something similar since a young age. “You don’t want it for the kids, you just want tot take it away from them. So to read it, I was sobbing, I resonated with my kids and thought ‘God, if this was me with mine, how do you cope?’”

But while such a devastating diagnosis is often delivered by a doctor in a quiet room, Adele was told her daughter had the awful disease in the packed emergency department by Stevie Nash, played by Elinor Lawless, who had initially hoped to delay delivering the diagnosis in a bid to not ruin Leah’s Christmas.

Reflecting on this, Lucy-Jo added: “I think the doctor, Ellie who played the doctor, she didn’t want to spoil it for Adele or the daughter, she wanted to wait til after Christmas. But it was so chaotic in the hospital with the big accident on the motorway, it was a case of ‘We need to move, this is happening’ but she understands that they’re all human beings and she’s got to take care of her emotions.

“So it was a case of how do I say it, it sort of just happened – it was a there and then, it happened in the corridor.” Lucy-Jo revealed that her direct messages had since been flooded with responses from people who explained that her reaction was extremely authentic as they had also reacted the same when being delivered the news.

“I’ve had loads of people saying they experienced this years ago when the children were younger,” she said, before adding that the children had “come through it.” Lucy-Jo went on to explain that a mother’s instinct is never wrong, but a mother never expects to hear such devastating news on Christmas Day.

“My inboxes have been inundated with people saying they’ve tried to get through to donate blood, or there’s a 45 minute wait on the phone,” she said, adding: “Which is amazing because the message got out without saying donate blood – specifically the message behind it and the education behind int made you feel like ‘I need to help, I need to do it.’”

But while Lucy-Jo resonated with the child cancer storyline, she also had her own experience with requiring a blood transfusion – unbeknownst to the producers and writers. The actress received blood transfusions last year as she battled chronic anaemia. She explained: “When I got it, I instantly thought ‘Oh my God, this is me, in need of that,’ I’ve lived for years not feeling very well for all sorts of reason, just thinking it’s life, stressed, kids and being busy – you never plan to put yourself first.

Leah required an urgent blood transfusion but supplies were incredibly low across the area

    Image:
BBC)“It wasn’t until I actually did need the transfusion, I realised how poorly I was. If they hadn’t had the blood there and then, you just don’t know – you don’t realise. Especially that time of year, Christmas time when everyone’s busy, preoccupied, they’re all getting Christmas sorted, there’s more accidents because it’s darker is getting colder and there the ice and snow and people don’t have the time to give as much. Then in the New Year, resolutions, ‘Going to start giving blood again’, Christmas time is when people are so preoccupied with Christmas, that is when we really need it, around the winter time, the winter months.

“I think it was good that we put it out at Christmas time, to make people realise this is going on, there is a need, massively around Winter, obviously it’s needed all year round but I think they’re kind of low in the winter months.” Lucy-Jo admits she was “blessed” to have a part in the show which brought awareness to so many people, explaining that she wanted it to appear “real” on screens.

Although she squirms watching herself back on screens, the actress watched the show with her partner in order to see how the storyline played out across screens. She said: “It was amazing, we were all so engrossed watching it because it was such a fabulous story.” One scene in particular made her well up, when viewers saw a real-life young girl who had battled the same condition as her on-screen daughter and required blood transfusions.

Since the episode aired, over 10,000 appointments have been made to donate blood

“We all welled up, I was so upset watching it,” she said before continuing: “I was upset watching it thinking ‘What I’ve just done is actually, there’s someone out there living that, I don’t know how they cope with it. I thought it came across brilliant, I thought Steve Hughes who directed it, how it was shot – it was very real, they didn’t have to dramatise it. I was really proud to be a part of that.”

During our exclusive chat, Lucy-Jo discovered that over 5,000 new people had singed the blood donor register, with over 10,000 appointments made to give blood. “Wow, that is amazing, I didn’t know that figure. That is all through one episode, that is sensational, that’s going to change so many people’s lives. That’s brilliant, we’ve done a good job, the message has been put out there, which is amazing.”

She continued: “We didn’t want to say ‘Go donate blood’, but we wanted the message to be in the story, to make everybody make their own decisions.” Lucy-Jo’s own mother-in-law explained that she was struggling to get through on the phone lines as they were “absolutely mental”. The actress added: “That is the power of telly, social media, that sort of thing – to get the message out pretty quick. That was the Saturday before Christmas when everybody is so busy.”

Casualty airs tonight at 9.20pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. You can sign up to donate blood or plasma on the Give Blood website here.

The Traitors stars fume at Claudia Winkleman as she drops shock announcement

The Traitors stars were left visibly stunned and questioning host Claudia Winkleman on Friday night, as she dropped some big news after the latest banishment round table

The Traitors fans saw the cast left rattled on Friday night, after some news from host Claudia Winkleman.

Claudia dropped an unexpected announcement leaving them all reeling and shouting out. Leon had just been banished by them all, after wrongly being accused of being a Traitor.

The Faithful left them all in tears as he declared who he was, and they realised they’d got it so wrong once more. But just as they were trying to process the information and who was lying out of the rest of them, Claudia has some news.

She stopped them in their tracks, declaring the night wasn’t over. Claudia announced: “Faithful, you have lost one of your own. He was such a team player.

“It’s getting so dangerous for the innocent. You are gonna need to think about that when you get into bed, but it’s not time for bed yet. You need a pick me up. I’m throwing you a dinner party. So get ready, have a drink, eat delicious food.”

It’s then that the contestants began laughing before realising she was being serious, with them looking shocked. Some of them called out at her, not happy with having to head off and party after losing Leon.

As several of them shouted out: “What?!” Freddie was heard saying to Claudia: “What, tonight? What? You’re taking the p**s.” Claudia defended this, saying: “You need it, have a party if you can.”

Leanne also fumed, saying: “What the hell. I am not in the party mood at all to be honest, and I’ve got to have a great time with people lying to my face.”

It comes as former player Dan shared his thoughts on Traitor Minah’s gameplay. He told The Mirror: “Really proud of the game that she’s playing because she’s balancing strategy and social excellently, in my opinion. I did have a suspicion in those last few days [that a Traitor would be someone I was really close to].” Dan noted that up until his banishment, he hadn’t received a single vote and the bank risk manager said he suspected he would have been “taken out of the game unless there was a reason for it”.

Dan – who also shared his thoughts on how Linda played the game in the interview – suggested that Minah had stayed under the radar through “acting like a team player” and “not bringing any attention to herself”. He continued: “She’s having lots of conversations with individuals across the whole castle. She’s really building those social bonds.”

The Traitors airs on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights from 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.* Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok , Snapchat , Instagram , Twitter , Facebook , YouTube and Threads .

Tina entered the villa as a bombshell on day 20 of the 2016 series, but failed to hit it off with Kady McDermott, who referred to her as a “Made in Chelsea reject” after she appeared on the E4 reality show in 2014.

The then 21-year-old was then dumped on day 40 after Adam Maxted decided to couple up with Katie Salmon.

But with Tina’s return, fans are calling for her to come face-to-face with Kady eight years after they clashed on the show.

One wrote: “If these producers are on s***, they’d put Kady in there.”

A second posted: “Kady needs to come in and light the fire again.”

“I want see this Kady! Get Kady in there – she sounds wild,” a third said.

Another added: “I’d pay good money for Kady to come in now, even act I just want to see the series two scenes again.”

Tina and Scott appeared on the second series of Love Island back in 2016.

In last night’s episode she also picks Luca and Nas to date and it looks like she hits it off with all three of them.

When she asked if Luca was excited she had come in, he told her: “Yeah I am, I needed it, with you I’ve got that instant attraction right away, I’m excited…”

  • Coleen Nolan shouted, “Don’t touch me!” leaving Ruth Langsford stunned after Ruth’s ‘unintentional physical contact’ with Coleen – What caused Coleen to instinctively fear her co-host?

Coleen Nolan shouted, “Don’t touch me!” leaving Ruth Langsford stunned after Ruth’s ‘unintentional physical contact’ with Coleen – What caused Coleen to instinctively fear her co-host?

n a shocking moment that took *Loose Women* viewers by surprise,

Coleen Nolan dramatically snapped at her co-host Ruth Langsford with a sharp “don’t touch me!” after being unexpectedly cut out of a heated debate on the popular talk show.

The tense altercation quickly became a talking point among fans, sparking widespread discussion on social media as the dramatic exchange unfolded live on air.

The heated moment took place during a discussion on a topical issue, with the *Loose Women* panel engaging in their usual candid banter and debate.

However, the mood shifted when Langsford, who was moderating the conversation, made a decision to cut Nolan out of the debate.

Nolan, known for her outspoken and passionate opinions,

was clearly frustrated by the exclusion and responded with an intense outburst that stunned both Langsford and the studio audience.

As Langsford attempted to move the conversation forward, Nolan, visibly irritated, fired back with an unexpected response. “Don’t touch me!” she snapped, reacting to Langsford’s attempt to calm her down or perhaps offer a reassuring gesture. The tension in the studio was palpable as the two co-hosts exchanged surprised glances, with the rest of the panel momentarily at a loss for words.

Viewers watching the live broadcast were quick to react, taking to social media to share their shock and confusion over the heated exchange. Many expressed their disbelief, with some questioning what had led to such a dramatic response. Others speculated that the tension had been building throughout the discussion, leading to an emotional outburst from Nolan, who has been known for her frankness and unapologetic style.

The incident marks a rare moment of tension between the *Loose Women* panel members, who are usually known for their lively yet friendly debates. While disagreements and differing opinions are common on the show, this particular exchange seemed to strike a chord with fans, as they watched the on-screen chemistry between Nolan and Langsford falter in real time.

Langsford, for her part, appeared taken aback by Nolan’s response. The veteran TV presenter, who has been a part of *Loose Women* for many years, tried to regain control of the situation by attempting to redirect the conversation. However, the damage had already been done, with Nolan visibly upset by being excluded from the debate. As the two women attempted to continue with the discussion, it was clear that the tension between them was not easily resolved.

Despite the tense moment, both Nolan and Langsford managed to maintain their professionalism and continued with the remainder of the segment. The exchange was a brief but powerful reminder of the dynamics at play behind the scenes of a live talk show, where emotions can run high, especially when personal opinions and passions are involved.

Following the incident, many fans took to social media to express their support for Nolan, with some commenting on her boldness in standing up for herself in the heat of the moment. Others noted that *Loose Women* thrives on the unfiltered opinions of its panelists, which is part of what makes the show so relatable to its audience. Nolan’s outburst, while surprising, was seen by some as a reflection of the honest and raw conversations that *Loose Women* is known for.

In the aftermath of the tense moment, both Nolan and Langsford have not publicly addressed the incident in detail. However, fans are eagerly awaiting any follow-up comments from the co-hosts to better understand what led to the exchange and whether it was an isolated incident or a sign of underlying tensions.

In conclusion, the dramatic turn of events on *Loose Women* has certainly caught the attention of viewers. The unexpected tension between Coleen Nolan and Ruth Langsford was a reminder that even on a talk show known for its lively debates, emotions can run high, and not everything is always as calm and controlled as it appears on-screen. Fans will be watching closely to see if this altercation leads to further fallout or if the two co-hosts are able to move past it and continue their chemistry on the panel. Regardless, it’s clear that *Loose Women* will continue to keep audiences on their toes with its unpredictable and often captivating exchanges.

The celebrity chefs who got away with scandal as Gregg Wallace scrambles to save his career after stepping down from MasterChef

Gregg Wallace has stirred up a storm in the world of TV cooking with his very public cancellation – but he’s not the only celebrity chef to be mired with controversy.

In November, the former BBC presenter, 60, stepped down from MasterChef after it was revealed that 13 people, including Newsnight host Kirsty Wark, had accused him of ‘wrong’ and inappropriate ‘sexualised’ behaviour during filming.

He later made things worse by saying that backlash had come from ‘middle class women of a certain age’, blaming them for his downfall.

The TV personality later apologised after his controversial comments on Instagram caused another PR storm, blaming ‘a huge amount of stress’ and ‘a lot of emotion’ for the error.

It appears that London-born Wallace has been unequivocally cancelled for his behaviour and subsequent doomed scrambling to save his reputation.

Experts have previously spoken out about the ‘angry’ culture of celebrity cooking – expressing concerns that future generations may even put off by a legacy of scandal and a harsh environment in the kitchen.

Gregg Wallace has unequivocally been cancelled after stepping down from MasterChef. But who are the famous foodies who have avoided the same fate?

Indeed, big names including Gordon Ramsay, Rick Stein, James Martin and Marco Pierre White have all been at risk of being cancelled themselves over the course their lengthy careers.

From raging temper tantrums to allegations of sexism, bullying and cultural appropriation, it appears TV cooking has barely gone a day without some form of controversy.

Here, FEMAIL takes a look at all the famous foodies who have managed to avoid being cancelled – despite risking their reputations.

If there’s one chef known for being able to control their temper, it’s certainly not Gordon Ramsay.

Though fans tend to view the chef’s angry outbursts as a source of hilarity, his tempestuous tellings off have risked his reputation in the past.

Ramsay has in the past been accused of ‘glamorising bullying’ and promoting a culture of being aggressive in the kitchen.

His famous angry outbursts on shows such as Hell’s Kitchen have helped him secure his spot in the the cooking hall of fame.

A famous meme, born from a parody sketch on The Late Late Show with James Corden in 2015, shows Gordon Ramsay holding two pieces of bread against the ears of a ‘member of staff’ while asking ‘what are you’ – before she replies ‘an idiot sandwich’.

The theme of shouty chefs has been shown in TV series such as the BBC’s Boiling Point and US hit show The Bear.

But in 2018, after Channel 4 tweeted a highlights reel video featuring Ramsay’s best meltdowns, food experts said his aggressive style has permeated the industry over the last few decades – and said that it is now outdated.

Food experts said that Ramsay’s aggressive style is symptomatic of an ‘abusive’ restaurant kitchen culture that has permeated the industry over the last few decades – and said that it is now outdated.

Critics have previously slammed the way notorious Michelin-starred restaurateur Gordon Ramsay rants at cooks on TV shows such as Hell’s Kitchen.

Food critic Jay Rayner and chef Stevie Parle, who owns three British restaurants, were among those to criticise Ramsay’s style of harshly attacking anyone who disappoints him on camera.

Jay Rayner called Ramsay a ‘sad, inadequate man’ for the way in which he rants at other chefs.

He tweeted: ‘This is everything that has been wrong about restaurant kitchen culture.

‘Because he suffered violence and abuse as a young cook, Ramsay thinks it’s character building and so the cycle continues. All he’s doing is glamourising bullying.’

Simon Parle tweeted: ‘Glamourising this type of bull**** really sets us back. No wonder we can’t find any chefs.’

Last year Michel Roux Jr said that the industry would need to move on from the shouty era to make sure the next generation of cooks would ‘fall in love’ with the business.

In 2009, the chef’s swearing got so out of hand that viewers were subjected to a curse word every two and a half seconds in his show.

In an episode of Gordon’s Great British Nightmare, he swore 243 times, with the first arriving just 31 seconds into the programme.

Ann Widdecombe led calls for Ramsay to be sacked at the time.

‘Anybody who swears that much on a cooking show must be fired,’ said the former Tory minister. ‘Most people were already fed up with him. This is the final straw.

‘Just how far does he have to go before Channel 4 bosses accept that he has caused real and genuine offence and broken all acceptable boundaries of good taste? What is their limit?’

Rick Stein owns five restaurants in Padstow which are popular amongst tourists

Rick Stein is best associated with his business ventures in Cornwall – but he’s sparked fury from residents on multiple occasions.

Stein’s string of success in the port town of Padstow on the north coast of Cornwall has even led to it being nicknamed ‘Padstein’.

He’s been accused on multiple occasions of trying to take over Padstow – setting up Rick Stein’s Cafe, Ruby’s Bar, St Petroc’s Bistro, Stein’s Fish and Chips, The Cornish Arms and a fishmonger – all in the upmarket coastal town.

In May last year the 78-year-old was forced to abandon an ‘eyesore’ extension to his luxury hotel on top of his flagship seafood restaurant after the proposals left locals gently simmering.

The multi-millionaire runs a 16 bedroom hotel from the establishment which has spectacular views over the harbour and the Camel Estuary.

Stein wanted to replace a rooftop terrace which had been popular with diners with a large extra en-suite room at the property, parts of which date back to the 19th Century.

The restaurateur said the terrace had not been used since the start of the Covid pandemic and staff shortages meant it had not been possible to reopen it since then.

He commissioned a detailed 56-page heritage assessment report highlighting how the proposals would serve to ‘conserve and enhance’ the Conservation Area the building is set in.

The celebrity chef withdrew the planning application following complaints by conservation experts

But Stein withdrew his application after conservation experts and the local council disagreed and insisted the development would be out of character for the town.

In 2022 the chef revealed that he’d be driving across Cornwall for his BBC Two series.

But residents soon expressed concerns that the publicity he would bring would encourage more ‘rich people’ to buy ‘second homes’ – thus ousting ‘real people’ from the area.

One person wrote on Facebook: ‘Unfortunately this will just inspire more rich people to buy second homes in Cornwall leaving less and less housing for the real people of Cornwall and thus spoiling the very place Rick claims to love so much.’

In 2020, he upset people again after refusing to pay staff wages when his restaurants closed for the coronavirus pandemic.

The seafood king told staff they would not be paid for over a month while his restaurants were closed.

Workers voiced anger at how Stein – whose restaurant empire started in Cornwall and now stretches across the country – had talked publicly about their importance while leaving them unable to pay their bills.

On the company’s Instagram page he wrote: ‘Our attention is now on how we get through this challenging time so we can continue to look after our people and customers for many years to come.’

But in a message on the company’s internal message board, managing director Ian Fitzgerald told staff: ‘We cannot afford to pay anybody after March 21. If we were to do that the company will be gone within a few weeks.’

He added: ‘This is a terrible thing to be telling you, but it is the most responsible thing we can do to save your job.’

Stein met first wife Jill in Padstow and they married the year they opened the Seafood Restaurant. They are still in business together along with their three sons, Edward, Jack and Charles.

Stein married second wife Sarah Burns following a five-year affair in October 2011.

But in February last year Stein confessed he doesn’t believe he’s going to ‘last much longer’ after he had open heart surgery.

He said that despite this, he is determined to live life to the full and enjoy the time he has.

Reflecting on the outburst, James admitted that he was dealing with the death of his last living grandparent, his grandfather, a robbery and a cancer diagnosis

In the summer of 2023, James Martin risked being cancelled when he found himself at the centre of a very public scandal when he was accused of bullying and intimidating behaviour by crew working on his ITV food show.

Reports then emerged of a second incident with ITV, as it was claimed the broadcaster had previously been made aware of James’ conduct following a separate incident in 2018.

Subsequently, James apologised for his behaviour and admitted the turmoil that was going on his personal life.

He opened up about unfortunate events in his life, which began with the death of his grandfather, then was followed by a home invasion by masked burglars, and then a shock cancer diagnosis.

Last July, ITV were forced to confirm they had spoken to the star after concerns were raised over the treatment of crew members during the filming of James Martin’s Spanish Adventure in May.

Reports then emerged of a second incident with ITV in 2018, when he launched a foul-mouthed tirade against staff after a drain was blocked at his home during the production of his show, James Martin’s Saturday Morning.

After investigating the matter, ITV chiefs told the programme’s production company Blue Marlin that changes would be made immediately, online news website Deadline reports.

James responded by saying ‘lessons have been learned’ and apologised for ‘acting emotionally’.

Sources at ITV told the Mail that bosses would be taking a ‘close interest in any future filming’ featuring the chef, whose affable demeanour has earned him a huge fan base.

Regarding the reports of this being the second outburst James had been accused of, a Blue Marlin spokesperson addressed the first incident.

Martin (pictured in 2018) said before the abusive rant he was dealing with the death of his last living grandparent, his grandfather, and that he could not attend his funeral due to work commitments

They said: ‘An unfortunate incident occurred after filming James Martin’s Saturday Morning in 2018 where James’ home was badly damaged.

‘Blue Marlin Television accepted responsibility. James was shocked by what had happened and on reflection acknowledges he responded emotionally, which he wholly regrets.

‘James apologises for any offence or upset caused, as he did at the time to the crew involved.’

They added: ‘Following this and some issues filming James Martin’s Spanish Adventures, James and Blue Marlin Television agree that lessons have been learned which have been discussed with members of the team and with ITV.

‘Blue Marlin Television and James Martin have taken on board ITV’s recommendations and their sharing of best practice, and are in the process of fully implementing.

‘Since the 2018 incident, Blue Marlin Television has continued to film over 500 shows at James’ home.

‘Blue Marlin Television remains committed to ensuring the welfare of all those with whom they work is of the utmost priority.’

An ITV spokesman said: ‘At ITV people and their welfare are our highest priority. The production companies who make shows for us have primary responsibility for the duty of care of everyone they work with, both on and off screen.

‘We make clear our expectations in this regard as part of our pre-greenlight duty of care processes. This includes having appropriate independent controls in place to enable everyone who works on their shows to confidently and confidentially raise concerns.

‘Following a complaint we received in May from members of the Blue Marlin production team about the filming of James Martin’s Spanish Adventure, we contacted Blue Marlin to discuss these concerns and to understand how the issues raised were being addressed and what actions were being taken.

‘As a result, we made a number of recommendations for Blue Marlin to implement as soon as possible, sharing best practice of some of our own relevant procedures around staff welfare and reiterating our Supplier Code of Conduct.’

Audio footage of his shocked rant was then leaked to The Sun, and in response to the shock outburst, James said that the end of 2017 was ‘one of the most fraught and difficult periods of my life’.

In the recording, he swore 42 times and says his staff should be ‘f***ing fried’ and orders them to take their lunch break standing in the ‘f***ing rain’.

He demanded that his team showed him and his house ‘more f***ing respect’, adding: ‘If not, you’re gone.’

Reflecting on the outburst, he admitted that he was dealing with the death of his last living grandparent, his grandfather, and that he could not attend his funeral due to work commitments.

James added that he was burgled by masked men later that month who entered his home while his partner Louise was at home alone and he was away working.

He then shockingly revealed his cancer diagnosis, adding that he was in a ‘very emotional state’ from all the stress.

James told The Sun: ‘I was then diagnosed with cancer on my face and I had to have surgery, which I couldn’t do until two days before Christmas when we had finished filming. Since then it has returned on several occasions and I have to have regular treatments.’

He said that he became ‘extremely upset’ when his home flooded while filming in 2018. The chef claims the drain blockage caused £30,000 worth of damage.

‘I can only say I am human and following a build-up of personal life pressure, I admit that I overreacted regarding the damage to my home,’ he told The Sun.

Kora by Tom Kitchin opened its doors in the summer of 2022 in Edinburgh , where the 47-year-old was born and bred

Tom, who is one of Scotland’s leading chefs, revealed on Thursday he had made the ‘very tough’ decision to close his Edinburgh restaurant, blaming the ‘current economic climate’.

In 2022 Tom was forced to hit back after his restaurant staff claimed they were bullied and abused.

A social media page – set up to ‘name and shame’ so-called toxic workplaces across the country – carried allegations by former employees that they had suffered historical incidences of physical and verbal abuse, as well sexual harassment, in Kitchin’s award-winning restaurants in Edinburgh.

Worse still, the celebrity chef himself was personally accused of presiding over ‘a climate of fear and intimidation’, as well as manhandling staff.

However he vehemently denied the allegations. He exclusively told The Mail On Sunday that year that he never got physically violent with staff, though he had lost his temper a few times.

He said: ‘We live and breathe what we do.

‘It is a tough environment, it is full on, 110 miles an hour, especially back when we started our business.

‘Nowadays it is a much different place but don’t get me wrong, and I think this is really important, we still work extremely hard.

He previously admitted losing his temper with staff and was accused of creating a climate ‘of fear’

‘It’s an environment that’s not for everyone and I’ve a lot of long-serving members of staff who understand the commitment required to operate at the highest levels. If I was such an ogre, I don’t think they would stick around.’

Kitchin, a well-known face on television with appearances on BBC shows Master Chef and Saturday Kitchen, added: ‘Yes, there have been moments in the past where the way I acted was not correct.

‘Shouting and screaming at someone over a carrot….because it’s not cut correctly. Do I shout and scream like that now? No, I do not and the way I was then is not acceptable in today’s modern world and I put my hand up to that.

‘Like many of my fellow chefs, we’ve been striving to make our kitchen and restaurant environments better. Our industry, and this restaurant in particular, has already changed so much in recent years, moving away from the work cultures of the past. We are not perfect but, equally, we have nothing to hide.’

The allegations, which emerged in June 2021, included claims by one former chef, James Dunn, 28, who worked at The Kitchin for six months in 2017, that he witnessed a co-worker being pinned up against a wall by the head chef, while Kitchin was present.

He also claimed the head pastry chef made him catch a hot iron tray on his forearms, burning him, while David Sunderland, 32, who worked at The Kitchin as a commis chef between 2011 and 2012, claimed confusion over a tomato and mackerel dish for a table of VIPs led Kitchin to ‘throw all the plates’, grab him and push him against a door.

In a post on Instagram this week, Kitchin wrote: ‘Thank you to everyone who has supported KORA over the years.

‘We have made the very tough decision to wrap KORA up at the end of this month..

The reasons behind the decision remain unclear, but the eatery did hint at a ‘new project’ in the future when addressing their customers in a statement released on their website

‘KORA by Tom Kitchin has always been a restaurant which we felt really passionate about and we are proud of the great food, service and experiences we have provided to our guests over the past few years.

‘Our regular diners and our suppliers have been instrumental in KORA’s success.

‘Our incredible team has really shown visitors to Edinburgh how incredible Scottish fare is and how proud we are to promote Scottish hospitality.

‘We have every intention to bring the KORA concept back to Edinburgh one day, but there is no hiding that the current economic climate contribute to this difficult decision.

‘We have no option but to exercise our lease break clause which is now due.’

Kitchin has faced tough financial situations previously, having had to close the doors of the Castle Terrace restaurant in 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Michelin-starred chef Sat Bains (pictured) refused to offer vegan food at his Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottinghamshire

Double Michelin-starred chef Sat Bains has put himself at risk of cancellation several  times – including his belief that vegan food is the ‘biggest rip off’ with cheap ingredients.

In fact, he made headlines in 2020 for refusing to serve vegan food in his £120-a-head restaurant.

Mr Bains, who opened the restaurant nearly 18 years ago, said: ‘It’s not just 10 dishes thrown on a menu – it’s thought about so much in minute detail.

‘We want to give our customers the best food we can.’

Customers visit the ‘niche’ eatery knowing what to expect and the types of ingredients they use on the seven-course menu, costing £105, or ten course at £120.

For this reason, the Great British Menu winner refuses to do ‘certain dietaries’ just as he ‘doesn’t go to a vegan restaurant and ask for a steak’.

He told the Mirror: ‘The amount of research to get the same flavour and texture as fat to give that luxurious mouthful is phenomenal.

‘You can’t go to a heavy metal concert and expect classical music. It’s my business and my business model to do what I want. I don’t do vegan, halal or kosher.’

Mr Bains suggested his restaurant bent over backwards trying to cater for one diner who had a allergy to vegetables from the potato family.

The restaurant (pictured) would 'never' set out to be vegan, according to the Great British Menu winner. He suggested the chefs bent over backwards trying to cater to a diner with a nightshade allergy to certain vegetables and was 'almost forsaking' the cooking style

The restaurant (pictured) would ‘never’ set out to be vegan, according to the Great British Menu winner. He suggested the chefs bent over backwards trying to cater to a diner with a nightshade allergy to certain vegetables and was ‘almost forsaking’ the cooking style

He admitted finding it ‘so hard to get right’ and ‘almost forsaking [the restaurant’s] style’ to meet their needs.

The double Michelin-starred chef is not a ‘specialist’ in vegan food and would ‘never set out’ to be.

MailOnline then went to review the restaurant – and found it lived up to the hype.

In 2016, a mother claimed Bains’s restaurant had sent her a ‘threatening email’ after she cancelled her £95-a-head reservation because her asthmatic daughter, six, was feeling unwell.

Helen Hall had booked a table for the ten-course taster menu at Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms, Nottingham, as a Christmas present for her and her husband Neil.

But, on the day they were due to go, her asthmatic six-year-old daughter Eleanor came down with a chest infection, a condition for which she had previously been hospitalised.

Not wanting to leave her with a babysitter, Mrs Hall , who had paid a £90 deposit per person, phoned the establishment to ask if they could re-book for another day.

However, she claims they told her she would have to find her own replacement for the table, or face losing the £180.

When she posted unhappy comments on social media, the restaurant agreed to a refund – before sending her ‘offensive’ email in which she claims they accused her of being a bad mother.

In the personal email, the restaurant manager also told Mrs Hall, who works at Center Parcs, that she would be warning her boss about her ‘rude behaviour’.

The email then accused Mrs Hall of ‘prioritising a cancellation policy over a severely poorly child’, adding: ‘May I suggest that you spend more time looking after your daughter than writing hilarious remarks about us on social media.

‘What does surprise me is that if my child was as poorly as yours, i’d be at my wits end and not pestering a restaurant.’

Speaking to MailOnline at the time, Mrs Hall said she was ‘shocked’ when she read the email.

‘I spent the night in A&E with my daughter until 3am. I had obviously really wanted to go to the restaurant but Eleanor was severely unwell and I didn’t want to leave her,’ she said.

‘The next day, I saw this email and it was the last thing I needed.

‘They were basically accusing me of being a bad mother. I also got quite worried about what they were going to say to my manager.

‘I found it very threatening and a personal insult. I don’t care how well respected the restaurant is – no one should go around saying things like that.’

Marco Pierre White has displayed some controversial behaviour over the years.

In 2013, the chef was even accused of ‘cultural appropriation’ by Lola Okolosie in The Guardian.

During an advert for Knorr stock cubes, the chef showed viewers how to make a Jamaican dish of rice and peas with chicken.

One commenter told him to ‘kindly refrain from referring to that mess you made as a Jamaican dish lest you get sued for defamation of our good cooking reputation’.

This sparked an online petition demanding a public apology from Knorr and the chef.

Okolosie pointed out White had used brown rice, garden peas and stock cubes in the dish, which would never be used traditionally.

She wrote: ‘I may not be Jamaican, but you don’t have to be to recognise that this is as close to the original as chicken, tinned tomatoes and a few Knorr jelly blocks is to chicken tikka masala.’

She added: ‘Beneath the tears of laughter at the hilarity of the video was the palpable and justified anger at an attempt to disregard the expertise behind Jamaican cooking.

‘The community’s outrage at the hot mess cobbled together by MPW as “Jamaican-style” is however not just about the misrepresentation of their culinary skills.

‘The evident lack of respect, mingled with an intention to create a marketable product was another example of cultural appropriation for wider consumption.’

White later apologised for the video.

He first got his big break in the culinary industry when he was just 16, becoming an apprentice chef with Albert and Michel Roux.

But as reported in HELLO! Magazine, he’s had no hesitation in removing customers from his restaurants if he disagrees with their verdict on his food.

Other stories include charging his customers £25 when they ordered chips with their lunch.

He told the Observer in 2001: ‘This guy was just trying to show off in front of his city boys – there were no chips on the menu, but he asked for some. Fine.

‘So I spent a long careful time on them – hand-cut, blanched, lovingly fried, served up with a little silver plate of sauce.

‘An hour of my time. £25. He hadn’t thought to ask the price.’

In 2019, Pierre White came under fire for claiming men are better than women at handling pressure in the kitchen, and saying women are too emotional to be chefs.

In an interview with the Irish Independent, he said: ‘The real positive with men is that men can absorb pressure better, that’s the main difference, because they are not as emotional and they don’t take things personally.

‘Look at the size of some of the pans you are carrying. Can you imagine you’re a lady in the kitchen and saying: ‘Will you carry that pan for me?’

Just a week previously, he hit headlines for calling Jamie Oliver ‘delusional’ for blaming the collapse of his restaurant chain on uncertainty resulting from Brexit.

In 2017, during an appearance on Hell’s Kitchen, he came under fire for comments on a contestant’s salmon dish.

Clearly not impressed with the meal, which was made by a female contestant, he said: ‘And you hope to keep a husband.’

Fury erupted last month after it was revealed Pierre White’s trendy London steakhouse restaurant was charging £1.50 per head for tablecloths and napkins.

The restaurant, located near Liverpool Street train station, has stated that this will be a fixed fee ‘to cover the cost of table linen and napkins’, with a discretionary service charge of 9.5 per cent also appearing on bills.

The charges for the linen are displayed on the restaurant’s à la carte menu, with the set menus seeing additional charges such as a £1 head cover fee.

A 12.5 per cent service charge is also added to set menu bills, as the self-proclaimed ‘linen-topped table dining’ establishment seemingly seeks more ways to charge patrons.

Consumer specialist Jane Hawkes told the Telegraph that the introduction of such fees is unfair on diners and that customers should be made to feel valued by businesses, rather than ‘bamboozled’.

Meanwhile the chef’s convict son, whom he shares with third wife Mati Conejero, has repeatedly made headlines over the years thanks to his wildly rebellious antics.

He was arrested again in December after a spate of burglaries but avoided jail after being sentenced to a suspended 30-week prison sentence for a spate of burglaries in his hometown.

He admitted the offences and was sentenced at North Somerset Magistrates’ Court.

His multiple previous offences include shoplifting, possessing a knife, and possessing drugs.

In 2019, Heston Blumenthal came under fire for claiming fewer female chefs make it to the top because their ‘biological clock’ kicks in

In 2019, Heston Blumenthal came under fire for claiming fewer female chefs make it to the top because their ‘biological clock’ kicks in and they’re ‘not as good at lifting pots and pans’ after childbirth.

London-born Blumenthal, 58, who has five Michelin stars across two restaurants, made the comments after being asked why there aren’t more women represented at the top level of the industry.

He told the Economic Times: ‘I have always employed female chefs, but historically and ultimately, the body clock starts working.

‘It’s evolution, and it is one thing to have a 9-5 job and quite another to be a chef with kids. So, that makes it difficult, the physical strain of lifting heavy pots and pans.’

His comments provoked a backlash on social media, with some people accusing him of sexism.

One irate commentator wrote at the time: ‘Thank goodness they can find the strength to lift their children.’

Another wrote: ‘Blumenthal, who followed his biological clock in marrying a woman 20 years his junior. This is hilarious.’

Despite his comments, the celebrity chef added he believed the industry was much better than 15 years previously, when women had to be ‘tough as old boots’ to be successful.

He said they are less likely to put up with sexist behaviour in the kitchen and fight back when it does occur.

In March 2023 Blumenthal tied the knot for a third time after previously marrying Stephanie Gouveia in 2018 .

The owner of the Michelin-starred Fat Duck restaurant, who’s known for delighting diners with surprising dishes such as snail porridge and egg-and-bacon ice cream, exchanged vows with entrepreneur Melanie Ceysson in her native France.

In 2017 he was granted a divorce from his now ex-wife Zanna after 28 years of marriage.

Blumenthal has also been criticised in the past for his expensive prices at his restaurants.

In 2023 he introduced a £425 Christmas menu, which even included edible mould for dessert.

Diners finished off their meal with ‘Botrytis Cinerea’ – which is more commonly known as mould.

In 2022, New York restaurateur Keith McNally was slammed after going on a bizarre rant where he said London restaurant critics were ‘corrupt with Putin-like power’.

McNally launched a tirade against Evening Standard and Tatler food critic Fay Maschler, claiming she only gave his restaurant a ‘stupendous’ review because they were good friends.

In a scathing attack posted to his Instagram page, he said that ‘four or five of London restaurant critics have so much Putin-like power that the people who slave away cooking and serving the food are scared s***less to publicly find fault with them’ and said that Italian restaurant Brutto ‘greatly benefited’ from the owner’s friendship with Sunday Times’ restaurant critic Marina O’Loughlin.

In he own Instagram post, Ms O’Loughlin said: ‘I’m not sure he realises the horrible story he paints about himself’ before accusing him of speaking ‘utter b*******’ for accusing her of ‘fictitious corruption’.

Taking to Instagram, Mr McNally – who describes himself as a ‘Deadbeat New York Restaurateur’ posted a pictured of Faye Maschler receiving her MBE and wrote: ‘LONDON RESTAURANT CRITICS ARE RIFE WITH CORRUPTION. ME TOO.

‘In 2013, a few months before opening Balthazar in London, I became friends with the restaurant critic, Fay Maschler MBE, and her husband, the painter Reg Gadney.

‘We met for dinner – once with AA Gill in Barnes – and watched one or two movies together. My then wife, Alina, sat for a portrait painting, for Fay’s husband. I even cooked dinner for the two of them. All in all, we were good friends. The elephant in the room, of course, was the opening of Balthazar and Fay’s impending review of it.

‘Balthazar opened in the spring of 2013 and Fay gave it a stupendous review. The rest of the English critics gave it a f****** awful one. (And perhaps deservingly so.)

Mr McNally is no stranger to controversy and feuding and has previously banned high-profile guests from his New York restaurant.

‘Without Fay Maschler’s ‘bought’ review, which I take 50% responsibility for, Balthazar would have closed. Despite my suspect character, I’ve felt guilty about this ‘bought’ review ever since. However, Fay Maschler MBE is not the culprit. The culprit is the immense – and unchecked – power of London’s restaurant critics.

‘In London’s food industry it’s an open secret that many of London’s restaurant critics are open to corruption.

‘The recently opened Brutto – an excellent restaurant – greatly benefited from the owner’s friendship with Marina O’Loughlin, the Sunday Times food critic.

‘After exposing this fact on Instagram I was deluged with emails and D.M.s from the owners, chefs and managers of London restaurants – Hawksmoor, The Delaunay and St John included – agreeing with me, but absolutely terrified to talk about it publicly.

‘Four or five of London restaurant critics have so much Putin-like power that the people who slave away cooking and serving the food are scared shitless to publicly find fault with them, or even talk openly about the restaurant critics’ colossal power. Something is Extremely Rotten in the State of Russia’.

He has also received criticism in the past after banning high-profile guests from his New York restaurant.

That same year, he wrote a furious post on Instagram denouncing the behaviour of former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter who had booked a table for 12 on a Wednesday lunchtime but not showed up.

‘Unless Graydon kisses my feet, the ban’s forever,’ he said.

He also nearly banned brazen real estate developer Michael Shvo who barged into his restaurant, claiming he had waltzed past staff and sat himself at the eatery’s best table.

Strictly’s Kai Widdrington announces ‘new partner’ in career announcement

Kai Widdrington has had a busy week, having taken to the Strictly dance floor during Saturday’s final before immediately moving on to his next role upon the conclusion of the series.

Strictly Come Dancing’s Kai Widdrington has been seen teaming up with a new partner following his stint on everyone’s favourite dance competition this year.

The pro dancer made waves during the grand finale of the BBC One dance competition this past weekend, where he dazzled audiences as part of the 2024 cast with one final exuberant performance.

He also joined forces with singer-songwriter Raye for a special performance of Oscar Winning Tears.

But as soon as the final wrapped up, Kai was quick to dive into his new role, having previously revealed his plans to join the pantomime scene this holiday season.

He’s all set to embody Captain Hook at Liverpool’s The Auditorium at the M&S Bank Arena, sharing the stage with ex-Corrie star Kimberly Hart-Simpson, who will be sprinkling her magic as Tinkerbell in their rendition of Peter Pan.

Earlier on, Kai excited fans by posting the event’s poster on Instagram, which starts on Tuesday (December 17).

In the post, he flaunts an impressive moustache and invites followers with the caption: “It’s panto season! Come see me us at the M&S arena Liverpool for Panto this Christmas – fun for the whole family – oh yes it is! ”

As he got back into rehearsal mode ahead of the opening night this week, Kai shared a snap of his script inside the auditorium, calling it: “My new office for the rest of 2024.”

He also re-posted a picture with Kimberly, who played Nicky Wheatley on ITV’s Corrie, originally captioned by her: “@kaiwidd Panto week,” to which he responded: “Here we go! ! “, as reported by Manchester Evening News.

Kai recently hit the headlines as he broke a world record on the Strictly 2024 Pro Challenge, showcased on the spin-off show It Takes Two.
The yearly competition sees the Strictly professionals trying to perform as many repetitions of a specific dance step in 30 seconds, with the winner setting a new record.

This year’s challenge had the talented dancers performing a Time Step from the cha-cha-cha, under the watchful gaze of judge Craig Revel Horwood and adjudicator Will Munford, who were in charge of counting and verifying each attempt.

The final results were revealed by host Janette Manrara, who invited Kai and fellow Strictly pro Neil Jones into the studio.

They were given the task of beating the previous record of 14 steps, set by Nadiya Bychkova.

After their attempts were shown, it was disclosed that both male pros had achieved 15 Time Steps in 30 seconds. However, one of them had a disqualification, leaving a clear winner for this year’s record.

Janette then declared that Kai had clinched the top spot on the leaderboard after one of Neil’s steps was disqualified, pushing him down to second place for the third consecutive year. “It feels good. I might retire early because I feel it doesn’t get much better than that,” an ecstatic Kai said after his win.

“I’m gutted [for all my fellow professionals]. I feel so bad, but I’m very happy. Thank you Mum and Dad, all my family. Thank you for everything.”

Vera star Brenda Blethyn reveals reason she’s quitting show after 13 years

Brenda Blethyn has lead ITV’s Vera since 2011, and revealed that one major realisation about her life sparked her desire to leave the series

Beloved Vera star Brenda Blethyn, 78, has described in detail why she’s leaving the show.

Brenda joined the ITV series back when it first started in 2011, as title role DCI Vera Stanhope. Now, the show is coming to an end, with two finale episodes airing on January 1 and 2, followed by the documentary ‘Vera, Farewell Pet,’ on January 3 at 9pm.

The Outside Edge actress revealed that thoughts of missing time with her family – particularly husband Michael Mayhew – were vital to her big decision. “It was a lovely summer back in 2023, and I came to realise I hadn’t had a summer with my husband for 14 years,” she shared.

“Naturally, I missed my family. And my dog Jack, although he was with me in the North East, but I didn’t see him much because I was working all day.”

Brenda shared that due to filming Vera she hadn't spent summer with her husband for 14 years, and admitted she 'missed her family'

Brenda added: “I love my Vera family, but I love my other family too. And when you consider I was already thinking about packing work in when I was offered the job back in 2010, 14 series of working on Vera is pretty good going! I wasn’t actually going to do any more after series 13, but of course ITV said they needed to wind the series up. So I said: ‘Oh, go on then, I’ll do a couple more episodes.’”

Brenda also shared how she felt about shooting the final ever episode, teasing: “It was very appropriate that the last day of filming was scheduled to take place in the police incident room where so much of the drama has happened. I think our producer Will Nicholson contrived that – incidentally, that is not where the final scene of the episode takes place.”

She divulged: “You could hear a pin drop when we were filming. Then when I heard ‘that’s a wrap’, I was emotional. As, indeed, Vera would have been. There were a lot of people behind the cameras and at the end I thanked everybody. I said: ‘We’re all as important as one another.’

“I might be the one playing the title character, but it’s only an ingredient in a great big pot. And all of the ingredients are necessary, everyone contributes to it, and it’s the sum of all of those parts that made Vera a success.”

This isn’t the first time Brenda has given a tiny hint about what to expect in the Vera finale. In an emotional chat with RadioTimes this month, she revealed that one particular scene with Jon Morrison, who plays DC Kenny Lockhart, was especially poignant. “One scene involved Vera and DC Kenny Lockhart, played by Jon Morrison. It broke my heart when I read the script and it was emotional to film,” she shared.

Alongside Brenda’s hints, we know that the gripping finale will see Detective Vera called to investigate a body found by the Tyne, entangling her in a case of “a broken relationship, secret love, grudges, regret and fraud.”

Exclusive: Linda Nolan ‘laughing and joking right up until the end’, sister Denise shares

Mirror columnist and pop icon Linda Nolan died at the age of 65 on Wednesday, with her heartbroken sister Denise now sharing how she kept her loved ones laughing until the very end

Singer and actress Linda Nolan was laughing and joking right up until the end, her sister Denise reveals today. The Mirror columnist and pop icon, who died on Wednesday aged 65, had been rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties last weekend, eight years after being told she had secondary breast cancer in her hip.

Doctors diagnosed double pneumonia and put her on oxygen, advising her to rest quietly and let it work. But Denise, 72, reveals Linda instead lived up to her “Naughty Nolan” nickname, saying that rather than do what she had been told, the star spent her final waking hours doing what she loved best – entertaining those around her. Recounting the last few hours in the life of her “beautiful, brave, hard-working and talented sister”, Denise says: “She’d been laughing and joking, although the medical team had told her she had to stay quiet to let her treatment do its job. Everyone was being quietly optimistic as she’d seemed so cheerful. Then at 3.30am on Tuesday, we got the dreaded call, ‘Get to the hospital asap’.”

Linda had been told two years ago that the cancer had spread to her brain. Yet just two days before being taken to hospital last Saturday, she had said in her weekly Mirror column how she was feeling better after a Christmas “bout of flu”.

With her trademark positivity, Linda wrote: “I feel so grateful to be feeling well again. It feels like a whole new world out there. There’s nothing like the sensation of starting to feel better after an illness. I wake up every morning and I think, ‘This is another day to celebrate’.”

But within 48 hours she began having trouble with her breathing. Denise – who had been caring for Linda at her home in Blackpool – summoned help. She says now: “I can still see her struggling to breathe, and the lovely nurse who got the doctor out. He took one look and rang an ambulance.

“I went with her and spent hours at the hospital as she was poked and prodded. It was something she’d got used to over the years. She was a model patient, apologising for any inconvenience to myself and the lovely hospital staff. Eventually, she was settled. And I left… not knowing that would be the last time I would see her conscious.”

While Denise returned home to care for husband Tom Anderson, 77, who suffers from Parkinson’s, other family members and friends stepped in. As they kept Linda company at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, they reported back on how lively she had been. Denise had been set to visit again on Tuesday but, on Monday night, Linda began to deteriorate as her weakened immune system fought the pneumonia.

She slipped into unconsciousness in the early hours and doctors made the decision to start end-of-life care. Linda’s siblings – brothers Tommy, 75, and Brian, 69, and sisters Anne, 74, Denise, Maureen, 70, and Coleen, 59 – were called urgently to her bedside. Yet, as with the cancer that had circled her for 20 years, Linda defied expectations. Denise says: “Friends and family sat by her bed, holding her hand, for 36 hours. She wouldn’t give up.”

After 14 hours keeping vigil over Linda, Denise had to leave to give her husband his medication. Before she could return on the Wednesday morning, she got the call to say Linda had passed away. The other sisters had all been at her side. It is a phone call that will stay with Denise for ever.

She says: “At around 10.20am we got the worst news – our beautiful, brave, hard-working, talented sister was gone. We’re numb. My husband Tom can’t speak about her without crying. We’ll love and miss her for ever.” Still reeling from the news, along with the rest of the family, it will be a long time before Denise is ready to talk fully.

But she felt it was important for Linda’s fans to know of her bravery and positivity in her final few days. That is why she wrote a statement which she gave to the Sunday Mirror to use. The siblings lost their sister Bernie to secondary breast cancer in 2013, at the age of just 52. In the wake of that loss, Denise and Linda had spent the last few years in each other’s pockets.

    Image:
OK!/David Cummings)Denise went with Linda to hospital appointments, and earned the nickname “Deliveroo Denise” for taking her meals on the rare times when bad news left her hiding away in her bedroom. In return, it was Linda who gave Denise and Tom the nudge to get down the aisle after 47 years together. Losing her has left an unimaginable hole in her life – and her home. Denise tells us in her statement: “We’ve been here before, with our beloved Bernie.

“But this has been harder because Linda lived with us. I’m looking round the room – everywhere there are reminders. Her tablets on the table… even her bath towel which I’ve just washed and she will never use again. Each time the alarm for Tom’s daily medicine goes off, I smile sadly. She would always shout ‘medication time’ – I can almost hear her saying it! She loved hospital documentaries, so whenever I came in, she’d be on the couch engrossed. I could never understand how she could enjoy them.”

But no image is more striking than the delivery Denise received as she wrote. She says: “Her hospital case, which I packed, has just been brought back. With no Linda.” Linda had found fame alongside her five sisters as The Nolans, later carving out a name in the West End and on TV.

Her death was covered around the world, from NME Japan to People magazine in the US, and as far afield as Mexico and Australia. Moving from Dublin to Blackpool as children, the sisters had worked up through the clubs to become 70s and 80s pop icons. They sold more than 30 million records, with catchy hits like Spirit, Body and Soul, Attention to Me and 1979’s disco classic I’m in the Mood for Dancing.

They toured with Frank Sinatra, sang for US President Gerald Ford, Princess Margaret and the Queen Mum, and had No1s in Japan, South Africa and Hong Kong. In Japan, they outsold Michael Jackson and The Beatles combined.

But Linda also faced adversity. Her husband Brian died of liver failure in 2007 aged 60. She once struggled with suicidal thoughts. And in 2005, was diagnosed with breast cancer. By 2011 she was cancer-free. But it returned in 2017, with secondary cancer in her hip, then her liver, and finally in her brain. She raised more than £20million for breast cancer and mental health charities, as well as Samaritans. Her sister Anne, who had breast cancer twice, 20 years apart, joined her for chemo.

Now cancer-free, Anne wrote in a tribute online: “The most generous, loving, beautiful, annoying at times, helpful, brave, forthright, person. You found humour in life’s darkest corners.” Youngest sister Coleen, a Loose Women panellist, added: “Her wit, humour and laughter was infectious. Linda had a heart full of compassion.”

Maureen wrote: “I am heartbroken, as we all are.” On Wednesday night, Blackpool Tower was lit up pink in honour of the town’s “shining star”. Dermot McNamara, Linda’s manager and long-time friend, said: “A pop icon and a beacon of hope. She faced incurable cancer with courage, grace and determination, inspiring millions. She will never be forgotten.”

James Martin’s Saturday Morning turns awkward as new chef refuses to share secret recipe live on air

ITV chef James Martin was joined by a new face on his Saturday morning cooking show – but things took an awkward turn

James Martin’s Saturday Morning took an unexpected turn when chef Corrin Harrison joined the show to whip up a fish dish with a twist. As he prepared a sumptuous madai fish with buttery callaloo and a champagne sauce, Corrin left James surprised by keeping tight-lipped about his secret ingredient.

While demonstrating how to create the luxurious sauce, James probed Corrin about the components of his concoction. “Now I’m going to make the champagne sauce.”

“This isn’t like a Frenchman would do a champagne sauce,” James cut in before Corrin continued: “So my idea behind this is, I use very good quality champagne, so I don’t see why I would want to cook that out.”

He detailed his unique method: “So I just infuse cucumber, trim some shiso and bronze fennel and shallot into champagne and cream, maybe warm it to 60 degrees, then heat it up, and then serve it.”

He added, “So it’s fresh. You’re getting your alcohol that you put in there, so a good glug,” reports the Express.

James noted the unusual approach, saying, “It is a very different way to doing a champagne sauce, though,” and quizzed further, “So there is a combination of two things in here. What’s this in this little magic pot?”

“Dashi powder,” Corrin responded, hinting at a culinary mystery: “It is like a chef’s secret.”

When James pushed for more, “Are you going to give it away?” Corrin playfully rebuffed him: “No, not really.”

The studio burst into laughter when James quipped, “You can have the champagne sauce, but not the rest of it.”

Corrin explained, “It is basically powdered dashi, we use it as a seasoning.”

Viewers were delighted to see a fresh face in the kitchen, with many expressing their excitement online.

“Wow, amazing, Corrin is so talented,” gushed one admirer.

Another praised, “Superb,” applauding Corrin’s culinary creation, and another viewer chimed in: “Corrin was a great addition to the show.

Exclusive: Strictly’s Katya Jones breaks silence on BBC show axe rumours as she issues plea

Katya Jones has broken her silence after rumours she is set to be axed from Strictly Come Dancing alongside fourth other professionals including Neil Jones and Gorka Marquez

Katya Jones has been rumoured to be one of the Strictly Come Dancing professionals set to be axed from the show.

Reports have suggested that the likes of Neil Jones, Gorka Marquez and Katya Jones all could be exiting the programme, with Johannes Radebe also expected to leave this year but of his own accord.

Sources have claimed that Johannes could be signing up for a big on stage production, which would need him to commit for several months and meaning he couldn’t take party in the new series of Strictly.

A source said recently: “The review of the line-up has always been about making a fresh start, and that was always going to be affected by which dancers performed well this series. Of the five names in the mix almost all of them went out in the first half of the series, which is very much seen as a landmark point for Strictly. It couldn’t have come at a worse time for them, because Strictly bosses feel they need to make some major changes, even if that means big names leaving.”

Katya has now broken silence on returning for another series of the hit BBC show. She exclusively told The Mirror: “Am I hoping to be back? Well this year would be my 10th on Strictly so I am hoping for a round number.”

Katya and her dancing partner Wynne Evans hit the headlines during the most recent series, when the pair made a ‘silly joke’ after fans claimed Katya was uncomfortable when she moved Wynne’s hand from her waist in a live TV moment.

Speaking on It Takes Two at the time, she said: “I just want to get something out of the way that I feel overshadowed our performance for absolutely no reason. Quite frankly I can’t bear sitting here watching this man being portrayed as someone he is no. And in fact it couldn’t be further away from the truth, so I have to make this absolutely clear, that this whole incident with the hand and the high-five on Saturday night, it was an inside joke between Wynne and I. Was it a silly joke? Yes. Was it a bad joke? Yes.”

Wynne added in a separate interview: “I’m absolutely heartbroken by the things that have been written about me in the last day. It’s not nice to live in that time, but basically Katya and I are really, really close and we’re really good friends, and on Saturday we made a stupid joke. It was a stupid joke that went wrong, OK? We thought it was funny. It wasn’t funny. It has been totally misinterpreted.”
