Abbey Clancy claims she was snubbed by ITV show after agreeing to join cast

Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Abbey Clancy shared on the latest episode of the podcast she hosts with Peter Crouch that she was approached for a role on ITV’s G’Wed

Podcast host Abbey Clancy has shared that she was once approached by ITV to appear in one of its shows. She however teased recently that she was snubbed by the broadcaster after agreeing to take part in the project.

Abbey, 39, announced on the latest episode of the Therapy Crouch podcast that she had been approached to appear on G’Wed. The sitcom, which launched last year, follows a group of teenagers and is set in her home city of Liverpool. The BAFTA nominated comedy was brought up on the podcast, hosted by Abbey and her husband Peter Crouch, 44, amid a discussion about Scouse representation on TV. The BBC’s This City is Ours was referenced and then G’Wed.

Abbey Clancy, in a stripey top and jeans, and Peter Crouch, in a white top and blue trousers, sat on a sofa recording a podcast with microphones in front of them.

After the ITV2 sitcom was mentioned whilst recording the episode, Abbey shared: “They asked me to be in that.” Then asked if she had declined the offer to appear on the show, she replied: “I said yeah but they never got back to me.”

Abbey and Peter, who launched the podcast in 2023, were both seen laughing moments later. Whilst a producer in the background appeared to tease over the news: “Fair enough.” Abbey then teased: “Come ‘ed, lad. Get in touch, will ya!”

Her comments come after G’Wed returned for its second series just a few months ago. The acclaimed show, which centres on the lives of characters including Reece Duffy (played by Dylan Thomas-Smith) and Aimee Morris (Amber Harrison), launched with its first series in February last year.

The second series was released by ITV in February this year. It was announced last year that the show had been renewed for two more series following the release of the first. Writer Danny Kenny said then: “It’s amazing and exciting that we get to do this again and I can’t wait for series 2 and 3 next year.”

And Nana Hughes, Head of Comedy ITV, praised Danny in a statement that was released at the time. Nana said amid the renewal news: “It is great to see that G’wed has resonated with our audiences across ITVX, ITV1 and ITV2!

“[Danny’s] writing had us crying with laughter one second, crying real tears the next and then back to laughter. And the hugely talented cast brought so much charm and cheek to the show, we can’t wait to welcome everyone back to Liverpool for a second and third series when G’wed returns in 2025.”

G’Wed is among the nominees at this year’s BAFTA Television Awards, which will be held at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London next Sunday. The event, broadcast by the BBC, is set to be hosted by Alan Cumming.

The Scripted Comedy category includes G’Wed as one of the nominees. It’s up against Alma’s Not Normal, Brassic and Ludwig for the accolade at the awards ceremony.

Whilst cast member Dylan is nominated for Male Performance in a Comedy. The actor is in the category alongside Extraordinary’s Bilal Hasna, Mr Bigstuff’s Danny Dyer, Kaos’ Nabhaan Rizwan, Changing Ends’ Oliver Savell and Smoggie Queens’ Phil Dunning.

Christine McGuinness quits Celebs Go Dating just days into filming E4 series

Christine McGuinness has announced that she’s quit the new series of Celebs Go Dating – which is set to feature the likes of Kerry Katona and Olivia Hawkins – days into filming

Reality TV star Christine McGuinness has announced that she’s quit Celebs Go Dating just days into filming of the new series. She’s issued a statement on her departure, including sharing that she made a realisation during production.

Christine, 37, had been unveiled as part of the line-up last week, with her having been set to appear in the fourteenth series of the E4 show alongside the likes of Kerry Katona. Filming was already underway for the show and the cast are understood to have jetted off to Ibiza for a trip recently

She however revealed on her Instagram Story tonight that she’s decided to walk away from the dating show during production. Christine told her followers that she had “great intentions” but feels the experience is “too soon” for her.

Christine said in her statement: “I joined Celebs Go Dating with great intentions but have realised that dating on a public platform and the attention that brings is just too soon for me. They’ve said the door is always open for me which I’m so grateful but for now I’m returning home to my family.”

A spokesperson for Celebs Go Dating said in a statement that those behind the show have “loved” working with Christine and “respect her feelings”. They said: “We have loved having Christine on the show and completely respect her feelings and decision to return home and have told her that the door is always open for her in the future at the agency.”

Christine’s involvement with the show comes three years on from the news that she had separated from Paddy McGuinness. The former couple, who have three children together, announced that they had split up back in 2022.

The model has been romantically linked to other people since the end of her romance with TV presenter Paddy. When it was announced that she had signed up for Celebs Go Dating, Christine revealed that she hasn’t “really dated much before” but was looking forward to a “summer of fun”.

She said about having joined the reality TV show: “I’m really excited to be joining the agency, I’m going to have a summer of fun! Who knows what might happen? I’ve not really dated much before, so I feel like I’m doing a crash course!”

Christine added in a statement released last week: “I’m looking forward to getting to know the other celebs and I’m especially looking forward to the coaching side of things with the agents. I think that’s going to be good for me.”

The line-up for the new series of Celebs Go Dating, which is said to feature a “brand-new agency,” was unveiled last week. Six celebrities were named in the announcement and it was later reported that another had signed up.

Christine was joined by the likes of Atomic Kitten member Kerry Katona, who first did the show in 2019, and Too Hot To Handle’s Louis Russell in the line-up. Love Island star Olivia Hawkins and S Club member Jon Lee are also in it.

It was previously revealed that the Chase’s Mark Labbett – known as ‘the Beast’ – will join the agency at a later date. More recently, it was reported that Made in Chelsea’s Sam Prince has joined the line-up as a “last minute” addition.

Coleen Nolan details heartwarming moment by sister’s bedside day before her death

Loose Women star Coleen Nolan opened up on the importance of laughter while she recalled a touching moment she had with sister Linda before her death.

At the beginning of the year, it was announced that singer Linda Nolan died at the age of 65 after a long battle with secondary breast cancer.

During Thursday’s instalment of Loose Women, the presenters discussed King Charles’ recent event at Buckingham Palace honouring cancer charities.

During the show, ITV’s Christine Lampard referred to a poignant statement from the programme of the Royal gathering where King Charles noted: “The darkest moments of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion.”

Looking towards Coleen, Christine mentioned how impactful and powerful those words must have been given the recent death of her sister Linda.

Coleen nodded in agreement before opening up about how humour has kept her going over these last few months, reports Belfast Live.

She candidly shared: “It always is! I’ve kind of got this thing where if I don’t laugh about it sometimes, then I won’t stop crying, and that’s getting nowhere.

“Life does have to go on, everything is the same the next day and people carry on with their lives.”

Coleen then relayed a comical incident involving Linda shortly before she died.

The Loose Women star recalled: “We were all with Linda at the hospital and we didn’t know at this point that we were going to lose her the next day. She was on oxygen, she was sitting up in bed, eating what she said was revolting rice pudding.

“They told her to stop talking because they couldn’t get her oxygen levels up. So, she was sitting up, she had a 100 per cent oxygen mask on and then she’d move it and start talking.

“So, I’m talking to her, and I’m watching the thing go down and down, then I’d go, ‘Linda, please shut up and put your oxygen mask on!’”

“We were just crying laughing because she’d take it off, wait until it got to a certain level while she could get her story out then put it back on. We laughed and what a great memory to have before, 24 hours later she passed away.”

At the start of February, Linda was commemorated with a heartfelt memorial service at St Paul’s Church in Blackpool where she had tied the knot with her husband Brian Hudson.

The funeral witnessed an incredible turnout as hundreds congregated in the streets to show their love for the Nolan family during such a poignant time.

Reflecting on the immense support on Good Morning Britain previously, Anne Nolan mentioned: “My sister Maureen started crying. I mean, we were all very emotional, but she started crying because of all the people that were there.

“She said, ‘I’m so glad because Linda would’ve been so disappointed if all these people hadn’t turned up.’”

Victoria Derbyshire admits violent father ‘put hands around her throat’ in emotional interview

BBC journalist Victoria Derbyshire has opened up about the violent and abusive childhood she suffered at the hands of her father, who she described as a “violent bully”

BBC journalist Victoria Derbyshire has opened up about the dark times she faced with her “vile” father Anthony, who passed away five years ago after a stroke. She called him a “violent bully” and described how her family constantly lived in fear of his unpredictable temper and infamous rages.

Speaking to ITV’s Loose Women, she recalled the harrowing experiences: “On occasion he put my hands around my throat [and] he would drag me out of bed in the middle of the night to shout at me. He was vile, frankly. He would put his key in the door when he was coming in from work and we would all scatter because we just didn’t want to be around… we were walking on egg shells as we knew he would probably start an argument, or he would be shouting to cause tension.

The seasoned journalist further explained that she had come to view violence as normal during her formative years. When her mother sustained a broken rib due to the domestic abuse, the medical notes shockingly only indicated “husband trouble”.

On another gut-wrenching instance as a young teen, Derbyshire fled two miles to seek police intervention during one of her father’s attacks on her mother, resulting in the bizarre situation where the officers were nonchalantly invited in for tea upon their arrival.

She also revealed the isolation tactics used by her father, noting: “Our phone had been cut off because my father hadn’t paid the bill – which I now know was a way of isolating us,” reports the Express.

Concluding with a reflection on the inadequate police response, she lamented: “[When the police came after a two hour wait], they never spoke to my mum. When you think back, it’s unreal.”

The 56 year old opened up with raw honesty during an episode of Loose Women for their anti-domestic violence initiative, Facing It Together. She shared her relief with panellists Christine Lampard, Coleen Nolan and Olivia Attwood, confessing that it wasn’t until her parents separated that she finally found peace.

Victoria, who previously stunned viewers in 2020 when she showed up on live TV with the national domestic abuse hotline inked on her arm, revealed: “They got divorced when I was sixteen, and honestly that was liberation! It was an incredible feeling…” and added, “She fell in love with someone else and thank God she did… the man who became my stepdad was like a proper father.”

Presenter Emma Willis will be back on TV next month just weeks after announcing that she had surgery on her heart. She has teamed up with her husband Matt Willis for a new project and details of its release have now been confirmed.

Emma, 49, and Matt, 41, will front the four-part BBC series Change Your Mind, Change Your Life. It’s been teased that the show, which is centred around mental health, will see them work with therapists to “explore how they can help us navigate the challenges that modern life throws at us”. The show is set to launch with its first episode on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on May 13 from 10.50pm. According to a schedule for the channel, the second episode of Change Your Mind, Change Your Life will then air from 11.40pm.

The BBC first announced the upcoming project, which had a working title of Inside Therapy With Matt and Emma Willis at the time, back in February. It was described then as a “groundbreaking new format” offering “unprecedented access” to “mental health experts behind closed doors”.

Details of the show were released at the time. The BBC said: “For the first time, cameras capture real therapy in action, as people from different backgrounds and life experiences work through the issues shaping their lives at a specially-created clinic, capturing the raw, real-time breakthroughs and genuine moments of change as they unfold.”

Emma and Matt said in a statement released at the time: “Therapy has played a huge role in both of our lives, not just individually but as a couple too. It’s given us the tools to understand ourselves and each other better, and we know first-hand how powerful that can be.

“With this documentary series we’ll hear from incredible experts and see what really happens in the therapy room, to help break down the stigma and start conversations. We’ll meet those taking part and follow the process each step of the way, which we hope will show the benefits of talking and prioritising mental wellbeing.

Matt Willis, in a white top and black vest, sat beside Emma Willis, in a grey hoodie, in a selfie.
The couple, seen in a photo shared by Emma in her post announcing the surgery, are now set to appear together in a BBC show airing next month(Image: emmawillisofficial/instagram)

“We know that therapy isn’t always easy to access, so by bringing it to TV, we hope to give people a window into the process and share tools that could help them navigate their own challenges. Asking for help is never a weakness; it’s one of the bravest things you can do.”

The release of the show comes after Emma announced last week that she had surgery following the discovery that she had a hole in her heart. The former Celebrity Big Brother host shared the news with fans in a post on Instagram.

It included a series of photos showing her in hospital. Emma was joined by her husband Matt – whom she said had been supporting her in the caption – in some of the photos that were part of the presenter’s post on the platform.

Emma wrote: “A big humungous THANK YOU to the team at the Royal Brompton Hospital for their care and support. A few weeks ago, I had keyhole heart surgery, which feels very strange to write, and even stranger when I say it out loud. From investigations last year, to diagnosis and then surgery, they were absolutely incredible. As was [Matt] who never left my side.”

Emma continued: “Turns out, I’ve been pottering around for 48 years blissfully unaware I had a hole in my heart. Isn’t it bonkers what’s happening in our bodies that we have no idea about…”

She added: “What blows my mind even more is the wonders of modern medicine, and the spectacular people that save, fix and help us every single day. Can you imagine what it must feel like to have a pair of hand that can do that job?! They are the real superstar…”

Emma went on to name people whom she had met through the experience in the post shared a week ago. The Voice host wrote about their support in the caption that accompanied her photos and expressed gratitude for her surgeon.

Just a day later, Emma was seen for the first time since the news whilst attending events in London. She was at a BAFTA nominees’ party last Thursday evening, after reportedly going to a press night for the musical the Great Gatsby, which has now opened at the London Coliseum.

Adam Collard has revealed he was hospitalised and required surgery as his fiancee returns to her TV work. The former Love Island star revealed he underwent back surgery, while also praising his partner Laura Woods ahead of her return to TNT Sports.

Adam took to his Instagram Stories to share the surgery update. He uploaded an image of him in a hospital gown on crutches, simply writing: “Back Surgery…

He went on: “Proud of her after only 13 weeks getting back into the mix and I can’t tell you how much she’s been my rock throughout this whole injury, process and the last six months in general on all fronts.”

Laura revealed her mum was looking after the pair’s son Leo while Adam was in hospital and she was working. She took to her own Instagram to share a sweet snap of the grandmother and Leo waving her goodbye for her “first day back at work”.

Laura and Adam announced they had welcomed their son back in January.

Sharing a sweet post at the time, the duo shared snaps alongside their newborn son and wrote: “Leo Ernie Collard, our boy,” with a love heart emoji.

They have continued to update their followers on their parenting journey in the months that followed. Laura recently revealed she has found it difficult to wear anything but a tracksuit since giving birth.

However, the presenter appears to be thriving now and she shared photographs ealrlier this month from a friend’s wedding featuring her newborn Leo Ernie Collard and fiance Adam.

She was seen on bridesmaid duty for the day. She wore a floor-length pink dress for the occasion, while Leo sported a suit of his own.

Ruth Langsford breaks silence on ‘painful’ Eamonn Holmes split – ‘I don’t want to be alone’

Loose Women host Ruth Langsford has admitted her divorce from Eamonn Holmes is ‘painful’ in a candid new interview but also insisted she is moving on with her life

Ruth Langsford has spoken for the first time about her split from husband Eamonn Holmes – admitting it has been “very painful” but insisting she refused to “crumble” and is moving on with her life.

The Loose Women star and Eamonn announced their break up last year amidst reports they had been living separate lives for some time already. Since then Ruth has had to watch on as Eamonn began a new relationship with girlfriend Katie Alexander. Ruth said: “A break-up of a relationship is hard enough for anybody to deal with.

“A divorce is very difficult and it’s very painful, but most people don’t have to do it in the public eye, with everybody having an opinion about you and writing things about you and commenting things about you. But that’s the nature of my job. I’ve always had that and if you can’t cope with that, you shouldn’t be doing this job.”

Asked how she is feeling now, Ruth added: “I’m all right. Relationship breakdowns are very difficult – marriage, friendship, whatever it is – but you just deal with it and you have to move on. You can either let yourself crumble or you pick yourself up and get on with life. It’s a choice.”

Ruth, who shares son Jack, 22, with Eamonn, added: “I’m not delighted my marriage is over but I’ve accepted that my marriage is over, so I am trying to now embrace the fact that I’m single and can make choices that are just about me.”

Ruth gave the interview to woman&home magazine with sources close to her saying she felt it was the right time to speak, choosing to promote her clothing range at the same time as touching on the break up. In the magazine, honest Ruth also says she has lost weight in part due to the divorce, which came after 14 years of marriage. Cracks had started to appear in their relationship before the formal announcement of the split and they had not been photographed together for two years.

“I have lost weight,” she said, confirming she is now a size 14. “Divorce obviously has something to do with it but I also went for a hormone check and rebalance, which helped. It could also hopefully mean that I’m coming to the end of menopause. I feel better when I’m a bit lighter.”

Admitting some self-doubt, she added: “I know I’m supposed to be empowered, look in the mirror and love my 65-year-old body. Well, I don’t always and, actually, I don’t think many women do. When I’m with my friends, we all complain about trivial stuff but it’s how we feel and that’s OK. Then, we pick ourselves up and get on with our lives because we have so much to be grateful for. We have a good moan, then another bottle of wine!”

Ruth took time off work from Loose Women when the split was first announced in May and returned in July with sources saying at the time she had been left devastated by what had happened and how quickly Eamonn moved on. Her presenting jobs on ITV and with the QVC shopping channel have helped her to look forward with a positive outlook. She said: “For a lot of people, whatever troubles you have, work is something that you have to get up and do. For me, it’s always been a good thing to dust myself down and concentrate on something else.”

She used her first interview to pay tribute to her friends who have had to help her through the split and sometimes been there during tearful late night conversations. Ruth said: “My female friendships are very important and, by God, have they stepped up. They did before, when my sister died, particularly. I’ve always known they’re there, but when the chips are down, they’re really there. They lift you up from the floor. They dry your tears, they bring food around, they phone you all the time to make sure you’re OK – and I would do the same for them. I can probably count those friends – the 2am friend – on one hand.”

By contrast to Ruth’s pain, soon after the split was announced, Eamonn was photographed with girlfriend Katie, although his friends insist they only became close after his split to Ruth. Speaking in June last year, Eamonn “I’m not OK. This is not a good time at all.” When asked about whether he and Ruth will continue to have a relationship of any kind, Eamonn added: “It’s too early to say but I hope we can still be friends.” He has since gone on holiday with his new partner Katie and has continued to work on GB News throughout the break up.

Ruth is now planning holidays herself, considering a visit to Thailand to see her best friend from school. Another option may be to go on a girls trip abroad to celebrate turning 65 as she says she would like to travel more. She said “As for the future, there is a certain feeling of liberation but I’m definitely not planning my next 10 years in finite detail!”

Ruth also suggested she will look to date again like Eamonn when the time is right. She said: “I’m quite fine being on my own, but not forever. When you’re in a relationship, it’s easy to say, ‘Great, I’ve got a weekend to myself,’ but when you think that might be every weekend, it’s a different story.”

In the magazine she names Coronation Street actor Jacob Roberts as a celebrity crush describing him as “hot, tall and dark”. Ruth, who turns 65 in March, also speaks in the interview about her dementia fears, as both her parents had Alzheimer’s, with her dad passing away in 2002 and her beloved mum now 94.

She could be tested to see if she is more likely to suffer with the disease when she gets older but she “would rather not know” for the time being as there is currently no medication to treat it. Ruth has found some comments about her looks on social media hurtful but has no plans to go under the knife just yet.

“I’m not saying that I’ll never have a neck lift or a chin lift because, who knows? By the time I’m 68, I might not be able to stand it any more. My grandma and mum were against vanity. If ever I said to my mum, ‘My knees are so chubby,’ she’d say, ‘You’re lucky to have knees.’ Perhaps somewhere in the back of my mind I’ve got a conditioning that to do anything like that is vain. There are times when I think, ‘Am I just cutting my nose off to spite my face?’ I say I don’t want injectables or fillers but I could look great.”

Eamonn and Ruth met in 1997 when they were introduced by mutual friends and they then dated for over a decade before Eamonn popped the question and they married in 2010. Sources close to the former couple admit their divorce has not been finalised and it is unclear how much longer that will take, with one source saying they expect it will be months before they have settled everything.

Loose Women star forced to apologise after swearing live on air

Craig Doyle was left red-faced after he accidentally swore while hosting a special edition of ITV’s Loose Women, which featured an all-male panel

A Loose Women star was forced to apologise to TV viewers after accidentally swearing live on-air. A special edition of the hit programme aired on Wednesday, 5 February, fronted by Craig Doyle.

For the Loose Men episode, he was joined by Danny Jones, Pete Wicks, and Jordan Banjo. The spin-off show airs throughout the year with an all-male panel highlighting the importance of male mental health struggles.

As they made their way through a series of discussion topics, the stars began to speak about a new trend, which sees men aim to grow the size of their glutes at the gym.

As each panellist discussed their body shape, Craig exclaimed: “There’s one thing we Irish are blessed with, being catholic and a huge a**e!”

    Craig Doyle
Craig apologised after making a huge blunder

“I am blessed with both!” Craig jokingly added before realising his huge blunder. “Huge bottom, sorry! Beep!”

Elsewhere in Wednesday’s instalment of Loose Men, the panel discussed romantic relationships, commitment, alcohol, tattoos and more.

The panel got candid about their own struggles during certain discussions, with TOWIE favourite Pete opening up about being single and shunning commitment in romantic relationships.

“I’m the only one on the panel that’s not married with kids. I am probably well known for being a bit of a commitment-phobe, and I’ve never hidden that fact,” the reality TV star – who is rumoured to be dating Love Island’s Maura Higgins – admitted before delving into the possible reasons behind his hesitation to commit to somebody.

He continued: “I think there are loads of different reasons why. I do think men are often described as being commitment-phobes and not as much women, but I do think that is rubbish. I’ve got to say I do think women are, I would say, just as bad, but I don’t necessarily see it as a bad thing either.

“I think everyone assumes that you have to commit, you have to do this [and] to do this because society tells us you have to be married and you have to have kids – and you have to do all this sort of stuff by a certain age.”

The Duke is set to miss out on his son Prince Archie’s special day when he turns 6 on May 6 – but it’s all for a very important reason, as he honours his late mother, Princess Diana

Prince Harry loves nothing more than being a dad to Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet – but he is set to miss out on a major milestone next month as he honours his late mother, Princess Diana.

On May 6, Harry and Meghan’s son Archie will celebrate his 6th birthday. But his father will be away from the family home and instead he will be in Las Vegas to launch a new youth initiative with the Diana Award.

Given that Archie’s special day falls on a Tuesday – and he will likely be at school – Harry and Meghan will likely hold a weekend celebration instead. And the Duke will no doubt make sure he FaceTime his son to mark the occasion.

Harry is heading to Vegas to launch the Pledge To Invest drive, which aims to put a spotlight on the future of youth leadership and how forward-thinking businesses can support it. He will meet with two young people, who are holders of The Legacy Award in memory of his late mother – Sikander ‘Sonny’ Khan, from Michigan in the US, and Christina Williams, from Jamaica.

Sikander works in artificial intelligence at Microsoft and also heads up the Paani Project, an organisation that supports diverse humanitarian efforts in Pakistan, including the construction of over 20,000 wells. Christina, meanwhile, is an attorney and advocate from Jamaica who champions youth empowerment and marginalised groups’ equitable access to education, healthcare and technology.

Harry will also be joined by Paul Fippsat, President of Global Customer Operations at ServiceNow, at the event, which is being hosted by Dr Tessy Ojo, the CEO of the Diana Award.

Dr Ojo said: “Companies that invest in youth leadership today are cultivating the workforce, innovators and consumers of tomorrow.

“The Diana Award is proud to launch Pledge To Invest – an opportunity for forward-thinking businesses to make a strategic, measurable and high-impact investment in the future of youth leadership.

“For over 25 years, The Diana Award has invested in young people, empowering them to tackle the pressing issues of our time.” Mr Fipps, meanwhile, said he is “proud to partner with Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, and The Diana Award to provide a platform that encourages other business leaders to invest in young people”.

The Diana Award is an international award that honours young people who work to improve the lives of others. The award was launched in 1999 by the former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown in honour of the late Princess.

Both Harry and his brother Prince William regularly attend Diana Awards events. In March this year, the future King attended the awards ceremony at the Science Museum in London.

In his touching speech, William spoke of remembering his mother through the work he and his wife Princess Kate are committed to. He said, “She taught me that everyone has the potential to give something back; that everyone in need deserves a supporting hand in life.

“That legacy is something that both Catherine and I have sought to focus on through our work, as have the 50,000 young people who have received a Diana Award over the past 25 years.

“I am so proud to see this belief of my mother’s manifested in the amazing young people receiving the Legacy Award tonight.”

Shortly after William’s speech, Harry also made a virtual appearance at the awards from his home in California. He spoke with the award recipients, virtually, to celebrate their accomplishments. Notably, Prince William departed before his brother’s appearance.

  • Expert gives definitive answer on Meghan Markle’s use of HRH title

Expert gives definitive answer on Meghan Markle’s use of HRH title

Since it emerged that Meghan Markle sent a gift basket to a friend with a card that described her as ‘HRH The Duchess of Sussex’ controversy has grown – now a constitutional expert has weighed in

Meghan Markle has ‘blurred’ the lines when it comes to using her HRH title, according to an expert, amid a furious row. Controversy has grown over Meghan’s use of HRH after it emerged she sent a gift basket to make-up entrepreneur Jamie Kern Lima last year, with a monogrammed card reading: “With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex”.

Jamie showed an image of the present in footage of her podcast interview with Meghan which she released on Monday. As part of their Megxit negotiations with the Palace, Meghan and Harry agreed to stop using “Her Royal Highness” and “His Royal Highness” at the end of March 2020.

They still retain the styles, with Harry having had his since birth, but they are essentially held in abeyance, as is the case for Prince Andrew, who also no longer uses his HRH style. The duchess’s representative denied on Monday that the couple used them, but a source said on Tuesday that the Sussexes did not use HRH publicly but retained the style, and did not use it for commercial purposes.

But according to constitutional expert Craig Prescott from Royal Holloway University of London, Meghan can use the title – but it is somewhat of a grey area. He explained to the Mirror: “Clearly when they stepped back from royal duties, one of the agreements was that they would not use these HRH titles but they still retained them.

“That’s because to strip them of their HRH titles is a little bit complex and maybe the Palace didn’t want to do that and to sort of keep the door open. If we remember they were stepping back for a year and then there would be a review.

“So they still have their HRH titles and the formulation was that they would not use this in an official capacity so that commercial activities don’t have a royal seal of approval.

“In that sense, this was a personal message and so she could and I don’t think there is anything legally to prevent her from using this in a personal capacity. I think what is unusual about this is that it has come out in the open – and it’s that blurring of the personal and the private.

“But this is a friend, with whom she is doing a public appearances with so that’s really where the controversy lies. You would have thought that discretion being the best part of valour, you would not use it in a way that could easily become public.”

In January 2020, the late Queen issued a statement after Harry and Meghan announced they wanted to step down as senior royals, saying that “together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family”.

Buckingham Palace outlined “the new arrangement” for the “next chapter” in Harry and Meghan’s lives. It included the statement: “The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the royal family.”

No documents were signed or laws passed, but the decision was seen as a blanket ban, with no suggestion that Harry and Meghan were permitted to use the style privately.

And it could have been the nature of how Harry and Meghan quit royal duties that meant there was no formal action in removing their HRH titles, as Mr Prescott explained: “To revoke a HRH you would have to pass a letters patent and the palace didn’t want to do that because again i think there was always the possibility at the very least that they were coming back. Now that seems as unlikely as ever.

“Your concern is maybe that now there is no indication they are going to come back, is there any indication they are going to push against that gentlemen’s agreement so to speak and maybe start to use this HRH a little bit more? That will be the concern I think from the palace’s point of view.”
