This Morning’s Vanessa Feltz quits after 33 years as she launches rival show

Vanessa Feltz has been a regular on This Morning for 33 years, where she has appeared as a news commentator and agony aunt. The presenter will now launch a rival daytime show on Channel 5

Vanessa Feltz has quit This Morning after 33 years.

The 63-year-old broadcaster has been a regular contributor to the ITV morning show but will be stepping away to focus on her brand new Channel 5 series Vanessa, which will launch on 24 March at 12.45pm. The show is set to ‘rival’ ITV’s flagship morning show, currently presented by Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard.

Vanessa told the Daily Star newspaper: “I’ve been on ‘This Morning’ since 1992. It’s been a long time . But I’m now doing my own show and I can’t do both.”

As she made her announcement, Vanessa praised the presenters and crew on This Morning for being “so lovely” about her decision.

She added: “When I told everyone I wouldn’t be able to do the show anymore, they were lovely about it. I heard from Alison Hammond and Holly Willoughby immediately and the bosses were charming. I’ll miss working with them all.”

The veteran broadcaster says she has learned a lot from her time on the show.

She said: “I have learned lots of stuff on This Morning. When I first did it, I had never been on TV before. I didn’t know what was going on. I was bamboozled but they gave me a contract.” And Vanessa “couldn’t be more excited” about her new talk show. She gushed: “This is a fantastic opportunity and I couldn’t be more excited. It feels marvellous.”

Vanessa will be produced by ITN productions, the producers behind the Jeremy Vine Show, and promises ‘heart-warming, hard-hitting, straight-talking’ discussion and interviewers.

Vanessa follows Holly Willoughby out the door on This Morning, with the former host quitting in May 2023. Holly left following a string of scandals for the show and said at the time she’d made the decision for ‘me and my family.’ Six months prior, long-serving host Phillip Schofield left following a media storm when he admitted to an ‘unwise but not illegal’ affair with a younger colleague.

Vanessa – who became a household name with her eponymous ITV daytime show, which ran from 1994 until 1998 before moving to the BBC for a short-lived show for several months the following year – announced her new show earlier this month.

She said in a statement: “I cannot wait to get started on this sparkling adventure with Channel 5. This show is all about YOU – your stories, your opinions, your emotions, and your triumphs. Television’s never been so real, honest, or unpredictable.

“Life isn’t perfect, so let’s not pretend it is – let’s help each other out, have a giggle, and make every show a conversation worth having so kick off your shoes and come and join me for lunch, relax with a bit of me time and let’s have a ball!”

The programme will cover a wide range of topics including celebrities, gossip, fashion, relationships and parenting.

Meanwhile, commissioning editor of Channel 5, Federico Ruiz added: “We are thrilled to have signed Vanessa, an award-winning broadcaster and bona-fide national treasure, to our daytime line-up. Our audience love her, and there is nobody better for viewers to spend their lunchtimes with every single weekday.”

ITN’s managing director of content, Ian Rumsey commented: “Vanessa defined the genre with her first talk show and this new slot on Channel 5 is a brilliant and unique opportunity to work with one of the pioneers of talk shows, and take all that talent, energy and experience to create a fresh twist to daytime chat.”

    Image:
Ken McKay/ITV/REX/Shutterstock)Vanessa’s new role comes after This Morning viewers branded her brave for undergoing a mammogram live on the ITV show. Last month, Vanessa highlighted the importance of the test which is used to detect breast cancer in a live segment. “Fair play to Vanessa for doing this, it’s a little uncomfortable (literally for a few seconds) but not painful, and can save your life!” wrote one fan on X, formerly Twitter, while another commented: “Well done to Vanessa!!! Love that woman!”

While in November, Vanessa announced she was taking over Carol Vorderman’s Sunday slot on LBC on a permanent basis.

Former Countdown star Vorderman said she would not continue with her radio show last month after suffering “burnout” from seven-day working weeks. In a video to Instagram, Vorderman said she had a “tight feeling in my chest and I was utterly exhausted”, but “after many scans and checks, we know that I don’t have any underlying health issues whatsoever”.

Feltz, 62, joined LBC in May and presents a Saturday afternoon show where she offers opinion, analysis and a deep dive on what matters to the British public.

  • BBC EastEnders fans gobsmacked over Kathy Beale’s age and dramatic comparison

BBC EastEnders fans gobsmacked over Kathy Beale’s age and dramatic comparison

EastEnders fans have worked out Kathy Beale’s ‘real age’ and discovered that she’s the same age as one of the soaps icons who appeared four decades ago

EastEnders fans have been left blown away by Kathy Beale’s real age. In recent days, viewers of the hit BBC show have seen a love triangle unfold between Kathy, Harvey Monroe and his partner, Jean Slater. In the past, Kathy and cab driver Harvey shared a kiss but tension has been brewing recently, with the pair deciding to embark on an affair behind Jean’s back.

Harvey has made it no secret that he feels pushed out by Jean, who is currently helping to plan the funeral of Martin Fowler, who died during the live episode to celebrate the 40th anniversary. But while Kathy’s steamy affair is set to take centre stage, some fans have been left stunned after discovering that the Beale matriarch is in fact, the same age as her on-screen mother-in-law, Lou Beale.

Social media sleuths have dug up a picture of Lou, played by the late Anna Wing and placed it side by side alongside Kathy, who is played by Gillian Taylforth. Lou was described by the BBC as a “stereotypical dominant East End matriarch.” But the picture seems to be much older than Kathy, who is said to be around 75-years-old.

During a 2020 episode, it was revealed that Kathy, the mum of Ian Beale, was 70. But fans couldn’t believe that the characters were the same age in both snaps, while looking very different. “Isn’t it funny how people looked older back then? I think the hairstyles had a lot to do with it,” said one.

A second commented: “Seems unfair to compare anyone to Gillian Taylforth. She clearly defies any and all conceptions of the ageing process.” Meanwhile a third fan went on to say: “I feel like not only have expectations of beauty changed, women don’t ‘have to’ age anymore and the fashion is just younger. I think it’s been a fairly quick change, even women in their 50s were depicted quite old back then (think Dot was late 40s?)”

However, one fan went on to comment that Gillian has spoken openly about having cosmetic enhancements over the years. The viewer said: “She’s open about having cosmetic work done. Gillian’s work is very well done, very naturally so people don’t realise.” But, there is scientific research behind people looking younger nowadays.

McGill at the University of Canada credits this to a variety of things including the environment, better health treatments and fashion choices. Lou first appeared on the soap on February 19, 1985. Tragically, she was killed off on July 26, 1988 having appeared in 232 episodes of the hit soap opera.

Meanwhile, Kathy who at the time was known as Kathy Cotton also appeared in the very first episode and married into the Beale family, tying the knot with Peter Beale. However, Gillian was dismissed from the role of Kathy due to her young age but bosses later reconsidered their decision.

Over the years, Kathy has faced a string of strong storylines, including her exit in 1997 when she moved to South Africa with her youngest child, Ben Mitchell. But in 2006, Kathy was believed to have been killed off during a road collision. Nine years later, she returned to the show – despite her character supposedly being dead as part of the programmes 30th anniversary.

Kathy’s return was confirmed on August 17, 2015, and was inspired by the John Darwin disappearance case. Since then, the businesswoman has found herself unlucky in love, with her latest husband, Rocky Cotton, landing himself behind bars after setting fire to Kathy’s café.

BBC star shares emotional statement as hit show is axed amidst ongoing cuts

The end of an era arrived for BBC viewers as the network’s Click aired their final show with host Spencer Kelly becoming visually emotional during the broadcast

A BBC broadcaster reflected on past moments as he signed off from his morning programme, admitting it had been the “time of my life.” Click, the BBC’s technology programme, had been delivering the latest gadget news to viewers for almost 25 years since it first arrived on screens in 2000.

Click’s regular weekend spot on BBC One was discontinued due to major budget reductions of £24 million. The cost-cutting spree also scrapped HARDtalk, the long-running interview programme that lasted 28 years, and removed the Asian Network’s dedicated news bulletins. Click was founded by former BBC presenter Stephen Cole.

Each episode runs for about 30 minutes, and since its launch on 6 April 2000, a fresh episode has been broadcast weekly, celebrating its 1,000th episode on 6 July 2019. In October 2024, the channel declared it would end the program after 25 years, alongside its interview series HARDtalk.

This Saturday morning marked Click’s final episode, with its longtime host Spencer Kelly getting visibly emotional with the audience one last time. Spencer kicked off talking about the digital revolution brought about by AI, musing: “Every so often, we reach a tipping point in certain technology where many, many new things suddenly become possible and it does feel like we are reaching one of those milestones.

“Now AI is starting to change the world and the next generation will both be using it as a tool and facing the consequences of it getting better and better at the tasks we once thought were uniquely human. I wonder how different their world will be to that of the early 21st Century when I first welcomed you all to Click, 1,000 programmes ago.”

Presenter Spencer took viewers down memory lane by flashing back to his first days on Click in 2006 before cutting back to the present. The tech show’s veteran host continued: “But that is it from me on Click. It has been such a privilege to see the things that I’ve seen and bring those stories to you.

“I have had the time of my life and I hope you’ve enjoyed the ride too. So thank you so much for watching and goodbye.” His co-presenter, Lara Lewington previously shared her own regrets over the show ending, particularly at such a pivotal time, saying, “at this moment of AI transformation and incredible acceleration in innovation

Back in November, Keir Starmer claimed artificial intelligence offers a “golden opportunity” to boost the economy. The Prime Minister said the technology could impact almost every area of people’s lives across the country, as he encouraged young people to get involved. During a visit to Google’s new AI campus in London, Mr Starmer insisted: “There is a race on now, for AI, we are well-placed in that race.”

He said: “Whether that’s better treatments for cancer and other diseases and faster diagnoses, or in education, with personalised learning helping every child go as far as their talent will take them. Or in defence, ensuring our national security in a more volatile world.” The PM added: “Make no mistake – this is a golden opportunity to drive growth, raise living standards, and put money into people’s pockets.”

Coronation Street star lands huge role in BAFTA-winning drama 10 years after leaving soap

Coronation Street’s Maddie Heath star Amy James-Kelly is set to star in BBC One drama Industry as a new character after being killed off the ITV soap over a decade ago

Coronation Street star Amy James-Kelly has landed a role on rival channel BBC One in the award-winning drama Industry after leaving the cobbles 10 years ago.

Amy joined Corrie in 2013 as Maddie Heath – a love interest for Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) who she met at a soup kitchen while sleeping rough. She left the ITV soap two years later, with Maddie dying after being attacked by Kevin Webster’s then-girlfriend Jenny Bradley (Sally Ann Matthews).

Ten years on, Amy, 29, is set to play the role of Jennifer Bevan, a newly promoted Minister in the Labour government, in the upcoming series of Industry.

She’ll be joining the critically-acclaimed drama alongside Twisters star Kiernan Shipka, Towards Zero’s Jack Farthing and Ted Lasso’s Toheeb Jimoh. Kiernan will play Hayley Clay, an executive assistant at payment processor Tender, while Jack plays Edward Smith, troublemaker and long-time friend of Henry Muck, played by Kit Harington.

Meanwhile, Ted Lasso’s Toheeb will plays Kwabena Bannerman – a trader at Mostyn Asset Management.

They will join Industry stars Myha’la, Marisa Abela, Kit Harington, Ken Leung, Sagar Radia, and Miriam Petche in the cast for series four, which begins filming later this month.

The BBC One drama follows a group of young investment bankers working at prestigious company Pierpoint and Co.

Last year, the series edited one particular scene in the BBC show after it was deemed too explicit for UK audiences. The moment, which featured a fully nude Kit Harington, has been cut from the BBC version, however it still aired in the American version of the episode, which aired on HBO.

Earlier this week, Coronation Street spoilers hinted that there could be more exits on the way – with one resident asking another to flee the cobbles with them.

Rob Donovan is returning to Weatherfield after escaping from prison last month, bumping into his ex Tracey Barlow. As she’s pulled into helping him, Tracy finds herself in trouble with the law once again – and old feelings resurface between the former couple.

Rob suggests that Tracy flees with him and they make a life together. But will she commit to a life on the run?

Yesterday, Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver opened up about leaving the ITV soap – and how she “nearly killed” her co-stars Simon Gregson and Craig Charles during a stunt gone wrong.

“I remember in the early days when you slapped someone – you used to do it,” she said.

“Now, you’ve got stunt people in and it’s all magic but we used to do it. I remember banging Steve McDonald and Craig [Charles]’s heads together and there was an almighty bang. Honestly, I nearly killed them. I got carried away.”

Billy’s secret revealed in Manpreet twist?

Viewers know that Manpreet Sharma is being terrorised by a mystery blackmailer over some images she posted online. Manpreet signed up to a subscription site where she posted racy and empowering content.

But someone found the images and has begun threatening her, with a money demand soon made. With more than one character tipped to be to blame, fans are speculating Billy Fletcher is hiding something.

It emerges that Billy has found Manpreet’s profile, and amid him hitting the rocks with wife Dawn Taylor he and Manpreet have a charged moment. Fans are starting to wonder if Billy is secretly targeting Manpreet and that’s why he was on her online profile.

    Steph’s revenge?

Dramatic scenes this week saw Steph finally find out the horrifying truth about her grandfather Anthony Fox, and her true parentage. Her mother Ruby Miligan told her how she was raped by her father Anthony as a teenager, and that this led to her falling pregnant with Steph.

With Steph now in on the murder cover-up it seems, it’s yet to be seen how she will cope after the earth-shattering discoveries. With upcoming scenes seeing her take action and forming a plan, some fans have wondered if it will be her who lands her father Caleb Miligan in hospital, after he was shown flatlining in a flashforward clip.

    ‘Killer John’s next target’

John Sugden has gone a little quiet ever since he revealed where he’d buried Anthony’s body in a recent episode, after Ruby killed him. John featured in tense scenes with boyfriend Aaron Dingle feeling betrayed after Aaron and his mother Chas Dingle plotted behind his back.

Amid John fearing Chas doesn’t like him, some fans are still convinced he is the person who killed Nate Robinson whose body was shown at the bottom of a lake last month. Now they’re predicting his next victim after spoilers teased Jai Sharma would get closer to the truth about Anthony’s disappearance – so will John silence him?

    Dylan’s ‘real identity’

Viewers are convinced April Windsor’s new pal Dylan is linked to the Dingles. This week he overdosed after being set up by April’s father Marlon Dingle.

Feeling bad, Marlon paid for Dylan to go to rehab and Dylan appeared to exit the show amid calls for him to stay. Around this, fans are sure it will turn out that Dylan is actually a Dingle and could be the secret son of Marlon’s brother Eli Dingle or even his cousin Tina Dingle who made a recent comeback.

Prue Leith’s Bake Off absence explained as real reason for exit revealed

Prue Leith has told viewers that she will not be judging the latest series of Celebrity Great British Bake Off and explained why she has been replaced by one of her close friends

As Celebrity Great British Bake Off hits our screen this weekend, viewers will be wondering why Prue Leith isn’t judging the contestants alongside Paul Hollywood like usual.

The first episode of this year’s Stand Up To Cancer special will air on Sunday 16th and will include a host of stars such as presenters Amelia Dimoldenberg and Kate Garraway, as well as actor Jim Howick and comedian Adam Buxton. Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond will be returning to host the show, and Paul will be ready to offer his signature handshake to the celebrity bakers. However, Prue will not be in the tent this year

Last year, it was revealed that Prue, 84, had chosen to focus on the regular series and would therefore be stepping away from the special editions of Bake Off. She will be replaced by Caroline Waldegrave OBE – one of her close friends.

She confirmed in an interview with This Morning last year that she would not be leaving the show for good, but simply found it difficult to keep up with the challenging schedule and would therefore be stepping away from hosting the celebrity version.

She explained: “These things are filmed back-to-back all the way through summer from April to August so you don’t get any time off. I’m getting quite old and there’s places I want to see. So I’m not doing this year’s.”

In an episode of Loose Women at the start of the year, Prue said “old age stinks”. “It takes me 10 minutes to get myself out of bed in the morning. If I don’t do the exercises I can’t move. There’s all sorts of things that are wrong with old age,” she explained.

Caroline, also known as Lady Waldegrave of North Hill, will be taking over from Prue. She is a managing director of Leiths School of Food and Wine, which she co-founded with Prue, and has co-written a range of cookery books such as Leiths Cookery Bible and Leiths Seasonal Bible.

Speaking of taking over from Prue on this season, Caroline said she was “completely terrified”. “Then, when I turned up, I went to the shepherd’s hut I was allotted and there were banners outside saying ‘Welcome!’ and flowers,” she said.

Prue advised her to say what she thought and to “be brave” and Caroline explained: “She is brave and says what she thinks and I think I got braver.”

During this season of celebrity Bake Off, contestants will make classic scones, an old-school favourite, and a cake that symbolises their career highlight. Also competing in this series are Sarah Beeny, Scarlette and Stuart Douglas, Ellie Goldstein, Gloria Hunniford OBE, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Roman Kemp, Jamali Maddix, Maxine Peake, Chris and Rosie Ramsey, Self Esteem, Meera Syal, Tommy Tiernan, Phil Way and Sophie Willan.

Sad signs Jacqueline Jossa and Dan Osborne split months ago amid marriage woes

Jacqueline Jossa and Dan Osborne have reportedly split after after eight years together, with them reportedly dealing with the matter “privately”

Jacqueline Jossa and Dan Osborne are said to have called time on their eight-year marriage.

The EastEnders actress, 32, and The Only Way Is Essex star, 33, tied the knot in 2017 at a manor house in Cheshire having met each other back in 2013. The couple share two daughters, Ella, nine, and Mia, six, while Dan is also the father of 11-year-old son Tommy from a previous relationship.

After months of speculation from concerned fans, signs of a breakdown in their marriage began to emerge. Jacqueline and Dan were spotted without their wedding rings, and reports surfaced that they were living apart. In January, sources close to the couple revealed that they had decided to go their separate ways and were living apart.

A statement read: “Jacqueline and Dan are handling things privately, choosing to keep their lives and relationship out of the public eye,” It added: “They kindly ask for respect and privacy as they navigate this together. Their children remain their top priority, surrounded by love and care from both parents — something that will never change. Above all, Jacqueline and Dan have each other’s and their children’s best interests at heart. There will be no further comment.”

A source close to the couple said: “Jacqueline and Dan are on a break and are spending time apart from each other. It’s not been easy for them lately and they have made this difficult decision.” They added that neither Jac nor Dan know what will happen in the future but their break was “needed.”

    Removing wedding rings

While the pair had seemed to be going strong over the years, Jossa and Osbourne fuelled speculation they had split after having both been seen without their wedding rings recently.

It comes after their last public appearance at the Sonic 3 premiere in December, where they posed with their kids. Jacqueline shared a red carpet photo, while Dan posted pictures with Jim Carrey, giving the impression of a united front.

However, another major sign that their relationship had been on the rocks is that they put their £2 million Essex mansion up for sale. Reports also suggest that Dan had reportedly moved out, while Jacqueline remained, signaling further strain in their relationship

    Contrasting social media posts

Just hours after news of their split broke, the couple left fans surprised with their contrasting social media posts, reports Manchester Evening News. On Saturday, March 15, Dan shared a mirror selfie on his Instagram Stories, showing himself working out with his 11-year-old son Teddy at Ripped Gym in Basildon, Essex. Dan’s beaming smile was impossible to miss as he snapped the photo with Teddy.

Meanwhile, Jacqueline appeared visibly upset as she took to social media. The mother of two posted a series of somber photos on her Instagram Stories, simply captioned “Saturday.” In the images, she wore a black and white striped short-sleeved top paired with light blue jeans while appearin glum.

    Rumours of infidelity and split

In January reports emerged that the couple had broken up, however, mum-of-two Jacqwauline brushed off rumours they had split as she told The Sun: “People seem to think they know more about my life than I do.

“They were saying: ‘Jacqueline didn’t spend Christmas with Daniel.’ But all I have to do is post pictures of us together with Christmas hats on. We lie in bed next to each other, laughing and reading stuff online about us.

“The speculation is ridiculous, but at the same time, I know it comes with the job, so I do understand it.” Meanwhile in a social media post she praised her family writing: “I couldn’t ask for a better family, filled with strong women! My girls are my absolute world and I can’t actually get over how lucky I am.”

The pair have had a rocky relationship
The pair have had a rocky relationship
Meanhwile back 2019, the couple were plagued by reports of Dan’s infidelity, prompting the reality star to issue a public apology to his wife – where he admitted to making errors. Taking to Instagram, he wrote: “So after weeks, months, years of constant articles & rumours, some true, some very untrue I want to publicly say, I know I have made mistakes, we all do as humans.

“But I’ve made some that have almost cost me my family. I have seriously learnt from these massively, so I want to publicly apologise to my beautiful wife and my family for the mistakes I’ve made.” Following the apology, Jacqueline moved out of the family’s home temporarily the following year.

She told The Sun: “It felt like everybody wanted to watch me fall apart. I kept it in for a while, but then over lockdown it was a really good time and place for Daniel and I to go through everything — an opportunity for us to talk through it all. For me, this meant turning to therapy. And because of that, I couldn’t be in the same house as Dan. There was no big argument or bust-up, and there were no other girls. Moving out was literally how I had to deal with it.”

Gene Hackman bombshell as wife’s doctor says ‘Betsy called me 24 hours after police say she died’

Besty Arakawa, 65, was found on the bathroom floor of the isolated Santa Fe home she shared with Gene Hackman surrounded by pills with her husband on the floor of a utility room 20ft away

The mystery surrounding the deaths of Gene Hackman and wife Besy Arakawa took a disturbing new twist overnight as Betsy’s doctor made claims that eerily contradict police accounts to far.

A doctor for 65-year-old Betsy, who was said to have died of a rare virus linked to rodents, has claimed she called his private clinic 24 hours after police claim she died.

The Santa Fe medical examiner claimed a post-mortem examination showed Betsy died of hantavirus, a rare rat-borne respiratory disease, on February 11 – seven days before Hackman died of heart failure combined with Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr Josiah Child, a former emergency care specialist who now runs Cloudberry Health in Santa Fe, New Mexico, told The Mail on Sunday: “Mrs Hackman didn’t die on February 11 because she called my clinic on February 12.”

He explained: “She’d called me a couple of weeks before her death to ask about getting an echocardiogram [heart scan] for her husband. She was not a patient of mine, but one of my patients recommended Cloudberry to her. She made an appointment for herself for February 12. It was for something unrelated to anything respiratory.”

Dr Child said Besty called him two days before her appointment to cancel it, saying she couldn’t attend as her husband was not well.

He added: “She called back on the morning of February 12 and spoke to one of our doctors who told her to come in that afternoon. We made her an appointment but she never showed up. She did not show any symptoms of respiratory distress. The appointment wasn’t for anything related to hantavirus. We tried calling her a couple of times with no reply.”

Experts fear Gene didn’t realise Betsy had died given his Alzheimer’s

Besty was found on the bathroom floor of the couple’s Santa Fe home surrounded by pills. Gene died on a utility room floor with his pacemaker showing he died on February 18.

Tragically, a post-mortem examination revealed there was no food in his stomach, and investigators believe his Alzheimer’s meant he may not have realised his wife of 34 years had died.

One of their three dogs, which was in a crate recovering from surgery, died of starvation and dehydration.

The shock claims comes after it emerged that the late Gene Hackman’s will does not include provisions for his three children, setting the stage for what could be a stark tussle over his $80 million estate.

In a surprise turn of events, it appears all Hackman’s wealth was designated to his wife Betsy, bypassing the Oscar winner’s three children: son Christopher and daughters Leslie and Elizabeth.

Should both Hackman and his wife have passed within 90 days of each other, the entirety of Betsy’s assets would go to various charities. US media report that Hackman’s son has hired a leading solicitor experienced in legacy disputes, hinting at a possible challenge to the current state of affairs.

Dr Heather Jarrell, chief medical examiner for New Mexico, told a press conference in Santa Fe it was “reasonable to conclude” that Besty had died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The condition is a rare but potentially fatal disease which spreads to humans through infected rodent droppings or saliva.

She reported that Hackman died a week later on February 18 of “hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributory factor.”

Dr Jarrell said: “Hackman showed evidence of advanced Alzheimer’s disease. He was in a very poor state of health. He had significant heart disease, and I think ultimately that is what resulted in his in his death.”

Hackman’s body was found in a mud room, and his wife was found lying on the floor in a bathroom, detectives previously said.

Dr Jarrell said: “Based on the circumstances, it is reasonable to conclude that Ms Hackman passed away first with February 11 being the last time that she was known to be alive.

“Lastly, clinically, hantavirus infection is characterised by flu-like symptoms consisting of fever, muscle aches, cough, and sometimes vomiting that can progress to shortness of breath and cardiac or heart failure and lung failure.”

Hantaviruses are transmitted to humans through the infected urine, droppings or saliva of certain species of mice and rats. The mortality of the hantavirus strain in the south west of the United States is about 38% to 50%, and is not transmissible from person to person, Dr Jarrell added.

The Mirror told this week how the actor’s dogs heartbreakingly led paramedics to the actor’s body in a final act of loyalty. Bear, a German Shepherd, and Nikita, an Akita-shepherd mix, kept running up and barking at the crew attending the scene, before running off. Cops thought the dogs wanted to play before realising they were leading them to the mudroom where Hackman’s body lay.

Paramedics had found Betsy’s body but had spent 30minutes searching the house to no avail until the dogs’ intervention.

“They realized (the dog) was trying to say, ‘Hey, come over here! Come over here!’” Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya told USA Today. Hackman was found in the mudroom which was in the far end of the house. A back door was propped open, allowing the dogs to go in and out.

The surviving dogs are currently in a state of “limbo” and cannot be rehomed until the couple’s wills have been read. They are presently residing at a dog boarding facility in Santa Fe, New Mexico, after being rescued from the couple’s home

Queen Camilla behind closed doors – Charles marriage, health struggle and staff secrets

From sending a personal letter to rape survivor Gisele Pelicot to ‘energizing’ her husband King Charles behind closed doors, Palace insiders and those who have met Queen Camilla reveal her true impact

Queen Camilla’s limousine stops in front of the crowd of cheering supporters. An aide pulls open the Bentley’s armor-plated door, letting in a rush of cold air. It’s showtime.

Her Majesty, wearing a heavy coat, hat and gloves, exits the vehicle to greet the schoolchildren who have waited outside on the clear, frosty February morning in Middlesbrough, northeast England, to catch a glimpse of their Queen. It is just one of a couple of hundred events Camilla will attend this year.

Camilla’s journey into royal life has been perhaps the most complicated of any, from her early relationship with King Charles III through his later marriage to Princess Diana and then the gradual move to bring her out of the shadows and into the light.

Much is said about the significance of the moment Queen Elizabeth II in February 2022 said it was her wish that Camilla would be known as Queen rather than princess consort, regarded as a ringing endorsement months before the long-reigning monarch died.

An aide brushes off the suggestion that Camilla sees such moments as significant. “It wasn’t the role or title – whether as duchess [of Cornwall] or Queen – that appealed to her, it was being with the man she loved.

“That meant accepting the duties that would come with him, even at a time of life when most of her contemporaries were deadheading roses in the garden or having lovely cruises in the Med.

“She was very willing to undertake the role and responsibilities, but it was never part of the goal of what she wanted from life. And of course, it’s come with a lot of hard toil and quite a lot of sacrifice as well because everything she does is now in the public eye.”

Far from retiring, Camilla is looking to the future, taking a powerful message on domestic violence to new audiences. It is a subject that clearly affects Camilla deeply and she was moved by the recent case of Gisèle Pelicot, whose husband Dominique Pelicot repeatedly drugged and raped her for nearly a decade and recruited dozens of men to do the same, filming more than 200 such attacks and storing the files in a folder he named “abuse.

“She was tremendously affected by the Madame Pelicot case in France and that lady’s extraordinary dignity and courage as she put herself in the public eye,” a palace source said, “because, as she rightly put it, why should she be made to feel like a victim or hide away in shame?

“And, of course, she helped highlight a very significant societal problem despite all the personal suffering she’d been through. So, as a long-term supporter of survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, the Queen wrote to Madame Pelicot privately. It was very much her instigation and determination to write to express support from the highest level.”

Gisèle Pelicot is not the only traumatized woman in need of comfort, as Camilla was shown during a visit to Exeter, in southwest England, where victims are hoping for a dedicated refuge. Charity Brave Spaces right now offers support from a room at the back of CoLab, a one-stop shop providing support services for a host of vulnerable people. A royal visit, though, is a royal visit and police sniffer dogs still combed the rooms and corridors before the Queen arrived and met with staff.

“Sorry, I’m a bit nervous I must admit,” a staff member said as she stumbled over her words. “I wouldn’t worry,” Camilla replied, in typically dry fashion.

A woman, Sarah, tells Camilla she survived a 10-year abusive relationship but Brave Spaces helped her find housing. She now has her own apartment. Later, the emotion got too much and Sarah cried as a posed picture was being set up. Camilla brought her to the front, ensuring she had pride of place in the photograph, and touched her affectionately on the back. “Big smile,” Camilla said as the cameras flashed.

“The Queen is a great advocate for woman, so it was a privilege to be invited to meet her,” Afnan Tellesy, 37, who needed help from Brave Spaces, said. “She’s got compassion. It was lovely, I’m proud of all the ladies in this room. I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”

Camilla began 2025 with chronic fatigue – a potent reminder of just how much the monarchy had survived the year before. An aftereffect of pneumonia, it had left her too tired at points even to pursue her love of reading. But it did not keep the 77-year-old down for long and Camilla, a palace source explained, is not known for wallowing: “She’s a stranger to self-pity. It’s something she’s inherited really I think from her late father and his wartime experiences.

Getty Images“They are the ultimate ‘never complain’ family. She’s weathered some pretty stiff criticism over the years but she’s very good at not letting it get to her and just cracking on, driven by a sense of duty and purpose, and self-pity is not seen as an attractive quality in anyone.”

Some storms passed more recently than others. Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, were very much not the never-complain royals, but their broadside is now finally drifting into the rearview mirror, a full two years after his book, Spare.

The King’s cancer is being managed effectively, Princess Kate’s is in remission and 2025 looks set to be a year of rebirth. Aides hope against hope that the storm has passed. By January 23, Camilla was ready for one of her biggest speeches of the year, as patron of the Anne Frank Trust, days before the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Camilla arrived at the London Hilton to a frenzy of journalists, lineups and warm words with dignitaries, then schoolchildren, who had readings about challenging prejudice.

Photographers and people with smartphones swarmed behind the kids as the Queen said hello to each one. A boy jumped up and down with excitement, while a girl took several deep breaths to still her nerves as her conversation finished.

Rob Rinder, a lawyer and U.K. TV presenter, said at the event: “Anti-Jewish racism, antisemitism really, in my lifetime has never been worse and so to have the Queen arrive, for her to speak amongst us, has not just a power, not just resonance, it doesn’t just mean there’s a platform and it gets amplified, it means she validates the work of this charity.

“It’s a fascinating thing about my own grandfather, the idea that you would have told him as he was a slave laborer at Buchenwald [concentration camp] that 80 years on the Queen of England would be at an event talking about and reflecting on his lost family, it’s an extraordinary thing.”

Anne Frank loved the royals. She had postcards of Princesses Elizabeth (later Queen) and Margaret on her wall and guests were reminded in the speeches of just how much Camilla’s presence at the event would have meant to a teenage girl in hiding from persecution. Camilla has included Frank’s in The Queen’s Reading Room, which started out as her book club and is now her charity.

Rinder said her passion comes from the heart: “When someone’s being inauthentic you can feel it instantly. The thing about Queen Camilla is she’s entirely authentic.”

Authentic it may be, though a degree of composure is also required when making small talk with children as a staff member shouts and grabs the pack of journalists to stop them knocking over a sound system. There was, though, time for Camilla to have a quiet moment with two survivors of the genocide to hear their stories.

Eva Clarke, who was born in Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria in 1945, later said: “She’s a very gracious person, interested, sympathetic. All the things that you expect.”

Mala Tribich, 94, who survived Bergen-Belsen, the same concentration camp where Anne Frank died, welcomed the high-profile support: “For me that’s very important because I sometimes wonder, for how long will they remember? Because when all the survivors have gone and the children grow up and no one’s said anything with a personal touch, I think it will gradually fade. But I hope it is never forgotten.”

Camilla used her speech to give a warning: “The deadly seeds of the Holocaust were sown at first in small acts of exclusion, of aggression and of discrimination toward those who had previously been neighbors and friends.

“Over a terrifying short period of time, those seeds took root through the complacency of which we can all be guilty: of turning away from injustice, of ignoring that which we know to be wrong, of thinking that someone else will do what’s needed—and of remaining silent.”

It is an emotional event and not the only one in recent times. King Charles’ cancer diagnosis must have pushed her aversion to self-pity to its limits. On the one hand, she wanted to help the King but there was a job to do, and these things cannot just be paused.

“It was astonishing how she balanced both of those roles alongside her own private anxieties, in particular during the first period of about a week or 10 days,” an aide said.

Poignantly, Camilla visited a London cancer center when she knew Charles’ diagnosis but the public had no idea. “She had to undertake public duties knowing that the King had been diagnosed with cancer, including a visit to a Maggie’s center in London, and yet not be able to show the slightest flicker of vulnerability when she went there knowing what she knew privately.”

That was on January 31, 2024, during a period in which Prince William had stepped back from public duties to help Princess Kate, who was recovering from abdominal surgery, which would also lead to a diagnosis of cancer. For a while, Camilla appeared to be carrying the monarchy virtually single-handedly.

“It was exhausting,” the aide continued. “It would have been draining for a woman half her age. But I think if one is to attempt to see a benefit from that period, actually it did give a chance for the media, and the world, to see some of the work that she had always been doing with greater interest and clarity.”

Another key area for the Queen is reading and in February she got to see real-world impact through the National Literacy Trust. Camilla is a book lover but only around 34.6 percent of British children read in their free time. In some of the most deprived areas, including Middlesbrough, where Camilla spent the day on February 13, the trust, with the Queen’s help, has bumped this figure up to 41.8 percent.

A little girl joined Camilla on stage at the town hall, one of five given certificates for being star readers. She did a perfect curtsy, one foot neatly behind the other, back straight, while a boy collecting his certificate bowed and was jokingly anointed, as if receiving a knighthood, by author Frank Cottrell-Boyce.

Jonathan Douglas, chief executive of the National Literacy Trust, said: “I remember the first time, probably about 15 years ago now, we invited the Queen to meet families on one of our projects. She walked into the room and within minutes was sitting on the floor talking to some of the families.”

She did the same at Middlesbrough Town Hall, where she kneeled on a play mat while younger children busily worked on a craft project. “Oh, it’s leaves,” Camilla said as she deciphered their work. The picture book Stick Man, by Julia Donaldson, lay on the floor next to them.

On another visit in 2019, Douglas said she brought gifts: “She rocked up to meet foster families in Swindon and it had to be a secret meeting, due to safeguarding for the children and families. She brought hampers of goodies from Highgrove [the King’s estate], she brought books for them. It’s not just a passion for reading; it’s a passion for reading linked with a deep empathy for families.”

The trust has opened 1,500 libraries in schools but Camilla’s work with them has also taken her into prisons, where she’s talked to inmates in reading rooms.

A unique feature of King Charles’ reign has been a rise in protests by Republic, Britain’s anti-monarchy campaign group, and Camilla’s visit to Middlesbrough was no exception.

During her “walkabout” with the King, police packed away a small yet noisy gathering of protesters. However, there were far more royal supporters, and Charles and Camilla shook hands and had quick-fire conversations with many of them. The couple also stopped to wish 100-year-old Rona Grafton a happy birthday. “Here’s a card from both of us,” Charles said, offering the centenarian the note traditionally given by the monarch to subjects who reach the milestone.

As they were about to drive off, the Queen stopped the driver so they could say hello to a familiar face in the crowd, who had been following the royals for around 30 years. Sheila Clark, 67, from Glasgow, traveled with a friend 190 miles south across the Scottish border just to see the king and Queen.

“They were both in the car,” she said, “and she saw us and deliberately came out to see us because she knows us from Glasgow and London and various other places. We’ve met her behind the barriers for many, many years. She said she wanted to come out to see us.”

Palace insiders say Camilla brings life to her husband: “She has a calming effect but also an energizing influence in that they really do take enormous pleasure in each other’s company. They share a very keen sense of humor. She can jolly him long with great affection—and at the other end of the spectrum, she’s about the only person in the universe who can try to rein him back when he’s undertaking too much because of his insatiable appetite for work.” Is she successful? “Partially.”

“She has a fabulous friendship support group,” the aide continued. “She relies very much on their support and takes enormous pleasure in the company of extended family. If she had one wish in life, it would be to spend more time with her children and grandchildren but every moment that they are together is precious.”

Not all the work is taxing, though, and the Queen was treated to a rather unconventional evening at Buckingham Palace during a reception for the National Theatre on February 18. Andrew Garfield and Cate Blanchett were among the stars to grace the palace’s red velvet carpets, looked down upon by a famous painting of Queen Charlotte, who served as inspiration for the Netflix hit Bridgerton.

Rufus Norris, the National Theatre director, introduced Camilla, who worked the room for half an hour before actress Sharon D. Clarke entered in character as Lady Bracknell, the embodiment of upper-class Victorian respectability, from Oscar Wilde’s play The Importance of Being Earnest.

“Ah—there you are, Your Majesty. So delighted you could join me,” Clarke said. “Now, there is a very eager young man awaiting us in the next room. He desires my daughter’s hand; I do not have high hopes. I would value your opinion.”

Later, Camilla told Clarke the play is “one of my favorites, it’s so funny, it really makes me laugh. You are brilliant at it; you got her spot-on.

Before then, the Queen was escorted into the throne room, where she was treated to a performance of a scene from the Max Webster production, with Clarke being joined by Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa and Hugh Skinner, both her co-stars from the show’s recent run in London’s West End theater district. The scene ended with an exasperated Gatwa, playing Algernon, asking Skinner, playing Jack, what they should do with their evening: “Shall we go to the palace?” “No,” Jack replied. “I can’t abide the palace.”

The Queen laughed, while Blanchett clapped and Garfield played things more low-key at the back of the room. It was all in good humor and Camilla – and the royals in general – are well-accustomed to far more stinging barbs than that.

Exclusive: Kate Middleton’s nervous whisper at Six Nations rugby clash uncovered by lip reader

Prince William and Princess Kate are cheering on opposing sides at tonight’s Wales vs England Six Nations match, and now a lip reader has revealed a nervous comment from Kate

The Prince and Princess of Wales have become unlikely rivals as they cheer on opposite sides at the Wales v England Six Nations match tonight – and Kate appeared to let slip a “nervous” whisper ahead of the game.

The pair are at the match at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, with their patronages seeing them back opposing sides. While Prince William has been patron of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) since 2016, Kate has been patron of Rugby Football League (RFL) since 2022 after taking over from Prince Harry.

The couple, who are famously competitive, have previously joked about supporting different teams during the tournament, with William supporting Wales and Kate rooting for England. In 2023, William remarked it would be a “tense journey home” with his wife after a Six Nations Wales v England match in Cardiff.

As they took their seats in the stadium, the Princess of Wales could be seen sitting next to Rob Udwin, president of the RFU, and the pair appeared to share a “nervous” whisper. Turning to him, Kate said: “He is nervous, I can see he is”, a lip reader told the Mirror.

It’s unclear which player they are discussing, but in response, Rob said: “He is certainly not an amateur” leading Kate to agree, “he certainly is not”. Rob then said: “He is very impressive”, with Kate nodding in agreement, saying: “He plays very well as I imagined”. Meanwhile, Prince William sat next to Kate and was joined by Terry Cobner, president of the WRU, on his left.

Ahead of the highly-anticipated game, the Prince and Princess of Wales met with injured players who’d been supported by the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust inside the Sir Tasker Watkins Suite at the stadium. The suite is a space dedicated for use by the players and their families ahead of games.

William is patron of the trust, which was set up to help players who have been severely injured while playing rugby in Wales, and their loved ones, inviting them to every Wales home game and hosting an annual family day.

The pair’s joint appearance comes as Kate makes a gradual return to public duties after revealing in January that she is in remission from cancer. In a message shared on social media at the time, the Princess of Wales explained she remained “focused on recovery”, though opened up on the “relief” she felt.

“I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year. My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything. We couldn’t have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional,” she said.

“It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”

As well as attending Saturday’s match, she
