Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to become permanent part of National Portrait Gallery

A portrait of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle captured by her pal Misan Harriman will soon be on display in London.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to become a permanent fixture at the National Portrait Gallery as a photograph of them taken by Misan Harriman will become part of its collection.

The image captures them just after it was announced they would be stepping down from their roles as working members of the Royal Family.

The black-and-white picture shows the Duke and Duchess of Sussex holding hands as they symbolically look ahead to their new lives together.

Famed photographer and Meghan’s close friend Mr Harriman posted the news on his Instagram, saying: “I am humbled and proud to announce that my portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is now part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Dare to dream, folks!”

Mr Harriman has captured many intimate moments of Harry and Meghan’s lives, including the announcement of her second pregnancy and a portrait of Princess Lilibet taken on her first birthday.

Fans were quick to congratulate Mr Harriman in the comments, with one posting: “Congratulations! A beautiful portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. I’m so pleased it is your portrait that was chosen.”

Another added their praise: “Congratulations to you! Well deserved. The love, tenderness and togetherness you captured of them is magical.”

It is not known exactly when Mr Harriman first became friendly with Meghan but it was before she met Harry, as he told Vogue they had met “long ago at a charity event”.

The photographer explained: “Meg reminded me that had I not introduced her to a mutual friend then she wouldn’t have met Harry. I’m grateful for whatever small part I played.”

The pair were reunited at the end of last year for a special Netflix panel hosted by the Duchess, where she and Mr Harriman discussed his directorial debut The After.

They were joined by the film’s star David Oyelowo, with the project later going on to be nominated for Best Short Film at the Oscars 2024.

Whether the Duke and Duchess will travel to London to view the portrait themselves remains unclear, with Meghan apparently having no interest in coming back to the UK.

Royal historian Marlene Koenig told GB News: “I don’t think Meghan will be visiting the UK anytime soon. I think she’s done with that. Unless there’s something major like a funeral. But Harry and Meghan’s life is in the US.”

Meghan has not been back to the UK since September 2022, having skipped both the King’s Coronation and Harry’s 10th anniversary Invictus Games service.
