ITV Good Morning Britain host forced to apologise as tense Tory row erupts live on air
Tory MP Steve Baker appeared on Friday morning’s episode of Good Morning Britain on ITV moments after losing his seat in Wycombe
Good Morning Britain got off to an explosive start on Friday as results poured in from this year’s Labour landslide General Election.
Speaking to hosts Ed Balls and Susanna Reid, Baker was interviewed about the result as former Chancellor of the Excheque George Osborne sat in the studio. In an awkward turn live on air, Steve thought one question had come from Osborne, sending him into a scathing rant – but it was actually host Ed that had asked, “So the voters got it wrong?”

Steve slammed, “George, I’m not getting into an argument with you.” Chaos erupted in the studio as Ed attempted to intervene, telling Baker it was him that asked the question. Susanna stepped in, “no that’s Ed,” but Steve couldn’t hear the clarification.
“George you and I have got a lot of history,” Steve continued. “You know, and if only you’d fought a better Reform campaign.” As he stopped, Ed insisted again: “Sorry about that,” as he apologised to George for landing him in the argument with Steve. “I have to just apologise to you and to George Osborne, it was me Ed Balls asking that question.”

Steve finally realised what had happened, admitting: “Oh, Ed… well.” The awkward ordeal didn’t go unnoticed by viewers who flocked to X, formally Twitter, after the truly embarrassing moment played out on the live ITV programme earlier this morning.
“Steve Baker having a msssive hissy fit on @ GMB right now,” one posted. (sic) While someone else said: “If you’ve missed it, look out for the Steve Baker GMB interview on here later. Absolute car crash, shouting at George Osbourne when Ed Balls asked the question. Blamed everyone and everything except Sunak.

“He even blamed it on the 1911 National Insurance Act. Baffling.” Another added: “I sat watching it swinging between laughing at him and raging at his arrogance! Ed balls threw him a lifeline at the end, sympathising how hard it is to lose his seat and Steve just threw it right back in his face. What a child.”
A fourth viewer commented: “A Steve Baker Masterclass on why the Tories lost.” While someone else concluded: “Steve Baker on @GMB sounded like a right sore loser then. Still though, brilliant to hear him having a massive rant at George Osborne even though it was Ed Balls who asked him a question.”
