The injury occurred in the 64th minute, causing Messi to limp off the field and then could not control his disappointment with tears.
However, his Argentina team still successfully defended the South American throne thanks to Lautaro Martinez’s brilliant goal in the 116th minute.
After the success with the national team, Messi did not return to celebrate the championship title but stayed in the US to treat the injury.
“After a medical assessment, we have determined that Leo Messi has suffered a ligament injury in his right ankle,” Inter Miami’s medical team confirmed.
“The captain’s ability to play will be determined through periodic assessments and his recovery progress.”
Coach Gerardo Martino said: “He has a sprained ankle and the injury is still there so we need to evaluate it.
We will wait for the results. There will be scans to determine the severity of the situation.
We have invited kinesiologist Walter Insaurralde, who is also the kinesiologist of the national team (USA). He is very cautious in making the final diagnosis of Messi’s injury.”
Inter Miami is currently ranked 2nd in the Eastern Conference. They just lost 1-6 to Cicinnati, in a match in which Messi did not play because he was busy playing in the Copa America. This defeat shows how much Miami needs the Argentine superstar.
According to the diagnosis, Messi will have to miss 4 matches, including the MLS All-Star match on July 24 as well as the League Cup match against Puebla Mexico (July 27). In addition, there are 2 matches against Toronto (July 18) and Chicago Fire (July 21).
Messi has scored 12 goals and contributed 13 assists in 12 MLS games this season. He set a record as the fastest player to reach 25 goals in MLS history.
