Prince Harry says he and Meghan are unlikely to have more children in frank admission

As the seventh Invictus Games enters its final days, The Duke of Sussex has spoken candidly about his and wife Meghan Markle’s future family plans

Prince Harry has suggested he and wife Meghan are unlikely to have any more children. The dad-of-two, 40, described parenthood as “amazing” in a new interview at the Invictus Games. But he admitted: “I think one or two kids is probably enough… I definitely think that.

“I know some people who’ve got five. I just say, ‘Well, that’s your own fault!’. Having kids is amazing, but it is… it’s a journey every single day, every single week, they just grow, and they change”. Harry added: “I love the questions that they ask and the experiences and the challenges that they give you. It’s great.” Prince Harry made the comments in a 30-minute CTV News special ‘Prince Harry and the Canadian Heroes, screened late on Thursday night.

The programme was filmed to promote this year’s Invictus Games, which are being held in Vancouver and Whistler.

Speaking about how the Games help him, Harry, who himself served ten years in the army and completed two tours of Afghanistan, said: “Being around this community is my fix.

“When you’re around these people, you hear other people’s stories, and you can make that connection with your own experience. There’s just a lot of weight that gets taken off your shoulders because a lot of these individuals feel or have felt very lonely.

“I think over the course of our service, we’re led to believe that the problems that you have encountered or the issues that you are carrying are somehow unique to you within that service, and when you come to the Games, you suddenly realise that actually, that’s not the case at all.

“I get so much out of hearing their stories, and that may sound weird, but I get my own sort of cure and confidence from them, knowing that what we’re doing is working.

“And being able to serve, I guess, is part of my service, and being able to use the position, the platform, and the spotlight gives these guys all the attention and the opportunity.”

Speaking about the Games, which began last Saturday with a star-studded opening ceremony in front of 40,000 fans, Harry said: “One of the things I care most about is the atmosphere because maybe it doesn’t mean that much to them, but for me to be able to create the atmosphere for them makes them feel like superstars.

“The harder thing to do is to merge the general public with the military. And for them to feel like: ‘I don’t have any connections to military families, but I went to this sporting display and it was incredible!’. And we never knew how good this sport.”

This Invictus Games is the seventh held since Harry founded it in 2014. It is being held in Canada for the second time – eight years after the 2017 Games in Toronto. And it comes five years after Harry and Meghan quit the UK to move to the country’s Vancouver Island with their son Archie, who is now aged five, in what became known as ‘Megxit’.

Meghan, 43, had also previously lived in Toronto while starring in the hit TV show Suits for five years. Harry said: “Canada’s been really good to my wife over all these years and its been really good to us as well.

“Certainly, in 2020, it was amazing for us to be able to be in Canada – Vancouver Island – with Archie and be able to go for hikes and be in amongst the local town and feel protected by that.

“We lived there for more than six weeks before anybody found out. We were bumping into people the whole time – nobody told anybody, yes they told other people, but there’s not too much of a media, kind of pap culture on Vancouver Island.”

They included Harry talking about how he speaks to his son Archie about his late mother Princess Diana and has shown him iconic footage of her walking through minefields.

Harry also spoke about how he is keeping Diana’s memory alive by telling the five-year-old about her life and achievements, including bringing international awareness about landmines in Angola.

Harry said: “Archie was asking about landmines so I talked about how some of these guys were blown up. I found myself talking to him about mines when he was five years old. Interestingly it gave me a chance to talk about my mum, his grandma, which I didn’t even really consider. He wanted to see videos and photographs of his grandma Diana out doing her thing with land mines all those years ago.”

Diana died aged 36 in a car crash in Paris in August 1997. She triggered a worldwide conversation that saw a turning point in the fight against the lethal devices by walking through a minefield in Huambo, Angola, on January 15, 1997.

Harry added: “It’s hard because kids don’t always ask the right questions, so you either shout it down right away, which I will never do, or you engage in the conversation and try to explain things.”
