Princess Diana‘s former butler has revealed that the late royal haunts his mock Tudor mansion in Cheshire and that the late Queen also believed in the supernatural.

Paul Burrell started working in Charles and Diana’s royal household in 1987 and was the Princess’s personal butler until her death in 1997.

The 65-year-old was having his home inspected by a group of ghost hunters on an episode of Celebrity Help! My House is Haunted on Discovery Plus when he made the claims.

Mr Burrell and his husband, litigation lawyer Graham Cooper, 64, called in the paranormal experts after being kept up at night by shadowy figures, wafts of cigarette smoke and unexplained bumps.

But the team hardly put the couple’s mind at ease when their special EVP recorder, which they claim allows them to ‘hear beyond the human ear for any nearby spirit contact’, received some disturbing messages.

The machine reported back with the words ‘sorry’ and ‘France’ and Mr Burrell believes that the latter might be a reference to the Princess’s death in a car crash while being driven through the Pont de L’Alma tunnel in Paris.

The Mirror reports that the former royal butler said: ‘I don’t understand why it would say “France” other than the fact that the Princess died in France and the fact I went to France to bring her home.

‘I had been introduced to this world before by the Princess – she was heavily involved in spirituality.’

Diana’s ex-butler has previously described himself as the late Princess’s ‘best friend’ and has alleged she referred to him as ‘the only man she ever trusted’.

And Mr Burrell is convinced that Diana is still reaching out to him more than 26 years after her death.

‘When you have loved someone in life – and I did love her – and they pass very quickly, a little piece of them remains behind and you carry them with you for the rest of your days,’ he said.

Mr Burrell added that he dreams about Diana regularly, usually at around 3am, but that he is not obsessed with her as he only has one photo of the two together although he has hundreds of pictures of the Princess.

The former royal servant also said that Queen Elizabeth II believed in ghosts and would only stay in Allt-na-giubhsaich, the cottage in Balmoral, if her corgis were with her as they would sense a supernatural presence before she could.

This comes after Mr Burrell applauded King Charles for being so open about his prostate condition on Monday.

Mr Burrell got the ‘all clear’ from doctors last year after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine, he said:

‘His issues and his condition is very different to mine but similar in other ways, it will be uncomfortable for him but his message is clear, he wants people to know about it and he wants people to come forward.

‘This is also what I am saying but he has a bigger platform than me, people are following him and going to the GP, people are going in droves.’
