“Our Hearts Are Broken”: Gabby Logan Bids Farewell to Her Father — Terry Yorath ‘Reunited’ With His Late Son

Heartbroken Gabby Logan has paid an emotional tribute to her father, football legend Terry Yorath, following his death aged 75 after a short illness.

The devastated Match of the Day presenter was forced to leave the programme mid-broadcast on Wednesday evening due to what was described as a “family emergency”. Just hours later, the football world learned of Yorath’s passing, triggering an outpouring of tributes from across the sport.

In a deeply moving family statement, Gabby and her siblings said their grief is softened by the belief that their father has now been reunited with his son Daniel, who died tragically more than 30 years ago. Daniel passed away in 1992 at just 15 years old after suffering from the inherited heart condition hypertrophic cardiomyopathy while playing football at home with his dad.

The family said that while Terry was admired publicly as a footballing hero, at home he was something far more precious. To the outside world he was a revered figure of the game, but to them he was simply Dad — a quiet, kind and gentle man. They admitted their hearts are broken, but found comfort in believing he is now reunited with Daniel.

Terry leaves behind four children — Gabby, Louise, Jordan and Daniel — and a legacy that spans decades of British football. He captained Wales 42 times as a player before hanging up his boots in 1986, later moving seamlessly into management.

As boss of Swansea, Yorath famously guided the club to promotion from Division Four while simultaneously serving as part-time Wales manager. In 1991, he took full charge of the national side, overseeing famous victories against Brazil and Germany and lifting Wales to a world ranking high of 27th.

Despite that success, his contract was not renewed after Wales narrowly missed qualification for the 1994 World Cup — a decision that angered many supporters at the time. The Football Association of Wales later issued a tribute, saying the thoughts of everyone connected with the organisation were with Terry’s family and loved ones.

Yorath also enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Leeds United, where he scored 11 goals in 199 appearances across a nine-year spell beginning in 1967. Leeds United said they were deeply saddened by his death and extended their sympathies to his family, friends and former team-mates.

Gabby’s sudden departure from Match of the Day earlier this week now carries heartbreaking context. After she introduced Manchester City’s draw with Brighton, she was forced to rush off during the highlights. Mark Chapman stepped in, explaining on air that Gabby had a family emergency and that he had come from the radio studio to finish the show.

For viewers, it was a jarring moment. For Gabby Logan, it marked the beginning of one of the most painful chapters of her life.
