“No Parent Should Ever Face This” — Jesy Nelson’s First Outing With Her Twin Daughters Since SMA Diagnosis, Standing Strong With Her Mother as Britain Looks On

For the first time since revealing her twin daughters’ devastating health diagnosis, Jesy Nelson has been seen stepping out in public — a quiet moment that carried extraordinary weight.

The former Little Mix star, 34, was supported by her mother Janice Nelson as she took eight-month-old twins Ocean Jade and Story Monroe out for a walk in Essex, marking her first appearance with them since confirming both babies have been diagnosed with SMA Type 1 — a rare and severe neuromuscular condition.

Earlier this month, Jesy bravely opened up about the diagnosis, explaining that Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 causes progressive muscle weakness and can require lifelong, round-the-clock care. She revealed that her daughters may become wheelchair users and face significant physical challenges as they grow.

A Mother’s Strength, on Display

Pushing a double pram alongside her mum, Jesy appeared composed yet visibly emotional — a powerful image of motherhood unfolding in real time, just days after she also faced another personal blow.

The outing came shortly after reports emerged that Jesy had split from her fiancé Zion Foster, whom she became engaged to in September 2025. Sources close to the former couple confirmed that while their romantic relationship has ended, they remain “fully united” in co-parenting Ocean and Story.

The pair are said to have separated just weeks after publicly revealing their daughters’ diagnosis, choosing to focus entirely on their children’s needs during an unimaginably difficult period.

“If We’d Known Earlier…”

Jesy has also revealed that her twins were not tested for SMA at birth, as screening for the condition is not currently routine across the UK. She admitted that earlier diagnosis could have offered a chance to intervene sooner — potentially altering the course of her daughters’ mobility.

That realisation has become the driving force behind her campaign for change.

Appearing on This Morning, Jesy spoke through tears as she explained that SMA Type 1 can often be largely prevented if treated pre-symptomatically — thanks to life-changing treatments now available when the condition is identified at or near birth.

Taking the Fight to Westminster

Just days later, Jesy brought her campaign directly to Westminster, meeting with Health Secretary Wes Streeting.

During their meeting, Jesy broke down as she insisted that “no parent should ever have to go through this,” urging the government to make SMA screening part of the routine heel-prick test for all newborns.

She showed the Health Secretary a video of a child living with SMA Type 1 — footage that reportedly left him visibly shaken. Wes Streeting later admitted the images had deeply affected him, acknowledging that earlier diagnosis could have made a profound difference and pledging to push for faster progress.

The UK National Screening Committee is currently reviewing SMA testing once again, with an evaluation underway until 2028. Jesy questioned why families have spent years “screaming and shouting” for change — and why it took someone with her public platform to finally force the issue into the national spotlight.

Holding the Line as a Family

Despite the heartbreak, Jesy has continued to show resilience, leaning heavily on the support of her family. Zion Foster also addressed the situation publicly this week, sharing a self-written poem on Instagram about acceptance, unconditional love and learning to live with his daughters’ diagnosis, while praising Jesy’s strength as a mother.

The former couple, who were together for three years, have made it clear that Ocean and Story’s well-being remains their absolute priority.

As Jesy balances motherhood, advocacy and healing, her first public outing with her twins has come to symbolise far more than a walk in the park — it stands as a moment of quiet courage, and a reminder of why her fight is resonating so deeply with parents across Britain.
