Kelsey Anderson is taking a stand against the franchise that made her famous, and it involves walking away from a massive paycheck.
Days after the Bachelor Season 28 winner and fiancé Joey Graziadei were expected to announce their televised wedding date, Kelsey, 26, has reportedly informed network executives that she is canceling the TV special in favor of a private, secret ceremony.
Kelsey described the decision as a necessary escape from what she calls ABC’s “toxic control,” insisting that the pressure to perform for cameras has begun to erode the foundation of her and Joey’s real-life relationship.
“I think people will be surprised, but I have to protect our peace,” Kelsey reportedly told a close friend in a conversation leaked on January 29. “The internet is going to do its thing, but we didn’t sign up to have our most sacred day turned into a scripted production for ratings.”
“There’s still a lot of love between me and Joey, but the show’s involvement is making the simple act of getting married feel like a job,” she added.
According to Kelsey, the desire to flee the spotlight began when production started demanding creative control over everything from her guest list to her bridal gown.
“It started with them wanting to invite people we barely know just for the drama,” she admitted. “We were being told who to have in our wedding party and what to say at the altar. It was like the worst kept secret that the ‘dream wedding’ was actually just a marketing event.”
“We weren’t lying when we said we wanted to get married, but we weren’t ready for the network to own the rights to our vows. Ultimately, we decided we don’t want to give fans a false version of our love just to satisfy a contract,” she continued.
Although there have been rumors that ABC offered the couple a lucrative “wedding bonus” to keep the cameras rolling, Kelsey confirmed the decision to go private was a line in the sand for her.
“We decided to just rip the band-aid off and tell them ‘no’,” she explained. “The last thing I was ever going to do is make the biggest decision of my life based on a television schedule or a renewal deal.”
Regarding the future of her relationship with Joey, Kelsey said they are more united than ever now that the “televised” pressure has been lifted.
“We don’t know when the secret ceremony will happen, but it will be on our terms. There’s no playbook for this, but we knew we needed to create some space from the ‘Bachelor’ world,” she reasoned.
That said, Kelsey confirmed that while they won’t be filming a special, they will still share a few personal photos with fans on their own social media accounts once the deed is done.
“We’re gonna do things our way. This isn’t a breakup; it’s a breakout,” she shared. “We care about the fans, and we still love each other, so in a world where we can be a normal couple without a producer in our ear, we’re going to take that chance.”
Kelsey then acknowledged the “toxic control” she felt within the contract and mentioned the videos she’d seen speculating on whether Joey was on board with the cancellation.
“We don’t really plan to let the network dictate our narrative anymore,” she noted. “I just hope that we both find a way to stay happy, away from the roses and the bright lights.”
