The news that Red Bull Racing have parted ways with team principal Christian Horner took the Formula 1 world by surprise on Wednesday morning.
Red Bull and Christian Horner are synonymous with each other in Formula 1 circles, and the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix will be the first time he’s not been in charge of the Anglo-Austrian outfit.
The constructors’ championship makes for painful reading for the six-time champions at the halfway stage of the campaign.
They sit 288 points behind McLaren, while Max Verstappen is attempting to make up a 69-point deficit to Oscar Piastri in the driver standings.
One of the biggest difficulties Horner faced before his exit was speculation surrounding his star driver’s future.
Horner’s final answer on Verstappen’s future didn’t fill any Red Bull fans with much confidence.
After his sacking, it could be that Mercedes driver George Russell is somehow the biggest loser from Horner’s departure.

Why George Russell could lose out from Christian Horner’s Red Bull sacking
The most persistent rumour in the F1 driver market right now is linking Verstappen to Mercedes.
It’s been said that Mercedes have given the green light to signing Verstappen, which would be a major coup.
However, that wouldn’t necessarily be good news for Russell.
It’s been suggested that Toto Wolff would let Russell go to make way for Verstappen if a move is on the cards.
Russell has had a phenomenal season, with the highlight being his victory at the Canadian Grand Prix.
He’ll be as aware as anyone that no matter what form you’re in, Verstappen is always the best option.
However, while many expect Horner’s exit to make Verstappen’s staying at Red Bull more likely, it’s not a guarantee.
Verstappen’s manager has sent a warning about his future after Horner’s sacking which could be even worse news for the British driver.

What is the worst-case scenario for George Russell after the Christian Horner news?
If Verstappen does decide to leave Red Bull and take Russell’s place at Mercedes, his best option might suddenly be off the table.
Horner was ready to make an offer for Russell should Verstappen move on, but there’s no guarantee that his replacement, Laurent Mekies, has the same feelings towards the 27-year-old.
Mekies arrives from Racing Bulls, where he’s worked with Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar this season, and has been tasked with developing Red Bull’s young talent in his previous role.
It means that Russell might be overlooked, and then he would be scrambling around for a race seat for 2026.
His options would be limited to Alpine, who haven’t confirmed their second seat for next season and newcomers Cadillac.
Alpine have been in contact with Mercedes over Valtteri Bottas, but Russell would be a far better option if he became available.
It’s an incredibly unlikely scenario, but Russell will want his Mercedes contract wrapped up before it becomes an issue.
