Diana and Charles tied the knot in the summer of 1981
Princess Diana reportedly felt “let down” by her mother’s behaviour during her wedding to Prince Charles.
On July 29, 1981, Princess Diana and the now King Charles (then Prince Charles) tied the knot in a glamorous royal wedding. The day was full of love – and Diana’s dress was even inspired by a fairytale dress.
But while the day is one that will always be remembered, it turns out Diana was apparently upset at the way her mum behaved. And it caused a lot of contention during the big day.

Princess Diana was ‘let down’ by mother at royal wedding
In the biography Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words, author Andrew Morton discussed how Princess Diana wasn’t pleased with her mother Frances Shand Kydd’s behaviour at her and Charles’ wedding.
It seems it all came down to how her mother reportedly wouldn’t stop crying. But Diana felt she was the one who was supposed to be feeling the way her mum was.
According to Andrew, Princess Diana explained: “She kept crying and being all valiant and saying that she couldn’t cope with the pressure. I tended to think i was the one under pressure because I was the bride.”
But the wedding wasn’t where tensions between the mother-daughter duo began, as Diana claimed her mother drove her “mad” during her engagement. She reportedly explained that Frances was “hurt” that she wasn’t involved in the wedding preparations.
How old were Charles and Diana at their wedding?
The relationship between Charles and Diana actually included a huge 12-year age gap.
Princess Diana was really young when she and Charles had their wedding. The young bride was only 20 when she stood in front of millions of spectators and married into the royal family.
She kept crying and being all valiant and saying that she couldn’t cope with the pressure.
This differed from Charles, who was already 32 when he and Diana got married.
The couple went on to have their sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. But their relationship didn’t last and they split in 1992. Their divorce was finalised in 1996.

What did Diana call Charles at their wedding?
While their marriage didn’t last, the wedding day was still one for the history books. The behind-the-scenes drama with Diana and her mother wasn’t the only thing to go a bit awry.
During the ceremony, in front of the 600,000 spectators lining the streets and the 750 million people watching worldwide, Diana made a huge blunder and got Charles’ name wrong.
Diana mistakenly called her partner by his middle name “Philip Charles” instead of the other way around.
Not long after the ceremony, the BBC explored the mishap in an analysis in 1981.
It read: “Wedding day nerves were apparent during the ceremony. Diana mixed up the prince’s names, calling him Philip Charles Arthur George, rather than Charles Philip.”
However this wasn’t the only mishap in the ceremony, as Charles got his wording wrong when saying his vows.
Instead of saying “with all my worldly goods, I thee endow”, he said it was “thy goods” he would “thee endow”.
And to top it all off, one of their bridesmaids, Clementine Hambro – who was just five – fell and banged her head. This led to her bursting into tears following the ceremony, but Diana herself made sure the little one was okay.
