Mercedes driver George Russell must be wondering what he has to do to earn a new contract for next season.
Outside of the two McLaren drivers and Max Verstappen, George Russell is the only person to win a Grand Prix this season.
Considering how dominant McLaren have been in 2025 and the inconsistency of Mercedes this year, Russell’s victory at the Canadian Grand Prix should be seen as a serious triumph.
The 27-year-old currently sits fourth in the drivers’ championship, but his future at Mercedes is under threat.
Verstappen is being heavily linked with Mercedes, with a move for the 2026 F1 season being touted.
Team principal Toto Wolff has a choice to make, and the suggestions are that Mercedes are leaning towards keeping Andrea Kimi Antonelli over Russell should they land Verstappen.
Ralf Schumacher has been discussing Russell’s future, and among the various teams who might have a vacancy for the Brit, he believes Alpine chief Flavio Briatore will try and make a move for him.

Ralf Schumacher sees Alpine as a potential suitor for George Russell
It was put to Schumacher on the Backstage Boxengasse Podcast that Russell might lean towards signing for Aston Martin as opposed to Red Bull should he lose his seat at Mercedes.
He responded: “Yes, that is also a good alternative.
“Of course, Lawrence Stroll always tries to have a world champion in the car. That’s been his concept from the beginning, and of course, that’s not Russell.
“Whether he’s his type, with his dress code, his whole demeanour, he could be a good fit for Aston Martin.
“Yes, that’s true, and of course, he’s a super fast driver, and they are not on the market that much, that’s clear, and let’s not forget Flavio Briatore.
“He also wants to get a new driver. That would also be a conceivable combination.”
Alpine are considering replacing Franco Colapinto with Valtteri Bottas before the end of the season.
Pierre Gasly is also considering his options, meaning that it wouldn’t be difficult to find a way to fit Russell into their 2026 line-up.
George Russell ‘more worried’ than ever before in the Austrian Grand Prix media pen
The £1.2bn-valued Alpine team are currently bottom of the constructors’ championship, which doesn’t make them the most enticing prospect for Russell.
However, speaking on the F1 Nation Podcast, journalist Lawrence Barretto saw a shift in Russell’s body language during the previous race in Austria.
He explained: “I think it would be fair to say that Toto and Max, or Max’s management, are having conversations, whether or not that is about him joining next year, in several years’ time, they are having conversations about something, because otherwise I just don’t see how this would start bubbling up.
“I think when George came into the TV pen on Thursday and he faced the media, he was probably the most worried, I feel, like he’s come across since we’ve started asking him about his future.
“And that was telling, I thought. Then obviously, as that day progressed, and I think he then did that Sky interview towards the end of the day, that’s when those comments about Max came out.
“And interestingly, I think up until that point, people were thinking if Max comes in, it would be for George.
“So it was interesting that George made the point that it would be for Kimi, and those two would be racing alongside each other.”
Russell still has a strong chance of signing a new contract at Mercedes, with no guarantees that Verstappen will enact any exit clause in his deal.
However, Russell will already be exploring his options elsewhere in case his time with the Silver Arrows comes to an end.
