Helmut Marko has been one of Red Bull’s most influential and most prominent figures for decades and is a big part of their success story.
He has helped to transform them from being a backmarker outfit to a leading title contender in almost every Formula 1 season for the last 15 years.
It’s safe to say that Red Bull wouldn’t be where they are today without him. He made significant contributions to the careers of Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel.
But with Christian Horner’s recent departure, and the fact that he’s now 82 years old, it’s valid to question what Marko’s future now holds.
Marko did something damning in Horner’s departure speech and stayed in the neighbouring Racing Bulls factory as he said goodbye to many of his colleagues.
It follows a Marko u-turn on Verstappen’s future, after the team’s recent struggles have seen him linked more intensely with German rivals Mercedes.

Helmut Marko has ‘no intention’ of leaving Red Bull before 2026 after Christian Horner’s departure
Marko believes Verstappen would not have ‘freedom’ at Mercedes if he decides to switch allegiances for 2026.
It’s believed that the Brackley-based outfit are in a good position with their power unit, and are ready to be the leader on the engine front again from next season.
After a recent assessment of the situation, Marko said Verstappen ‘can’t’ sign for Mercedes. He’s trying to keep his driver, whom he has close ties to, focused.
Any bid for a fifth consecutive drivers’ championship seems far-fetched for now. Red Bull’s development has been too poor. It does beg the question, how long will Marko stay, especially if Verstappen goes?
According to Analisi Tecnica F1, the Austrian has ‘no intention’ of leaving the team he has been with for nearly 20 years.
They report that he will assume his position until ‘at least’ the end of 2026, which will be when everyone knows the new running order for the grid after the new regulations.
How long has Helmut Marko been with Red Bull’s programme for?
Marko has been with Red Bull from the very start, when their junior team was founded in 1999. He founded RSM Marko in 1989, which morphed into Red Bull’s programme in 1999.
Since then, he has uncovered some great talents and has helped to set the benchmark for teams recruiting young talent.
The likes of Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo were all nurtured from a young age and prospered thanks to his system.
It can be intense and pressure-filled at times, but those situations have helped to make some diamonds along the way. The longer he continues, the longer Red Bull stands a chance of winning.
