At 65, Carol Vorderman is rewriting the rulebook on love, independence — and what happiness looks like after marriage, motherhood, and decades in the public eye.
The former Countdown icon has made one thing crystal clear: she has no intention of settling down — and she couldn’t be more content with that choice.
Instead, Carol has embraced a life she says finally belongs entirely to her.
“Maybe When I’m 82… With a 45-Year-Old”
Speaking with her trademark wit and confidence, Carol recently joked that the idea of settling down simply doesn’t appeal — at least not now.
“I have no desire to settle down right now,” she said. “Maybe when I’m 82 — with a 45-year-old!”
But beneath the humour lies a deeper message. Carol insists this isn’t about rejecting romance or men — it’s about rejecting expectations placed on women, particularly as they age.
“There’s this idea that women need a man to travel, to live, to enjoy themselves,” she explained. “You really, really don’t. That’s not anti-men — it’s pro-women.”
Five ‘Special Friends’ — And No Apologies
Last year, Carol raised eyebrows when she openly revealed that she has five ‘special friends’ — long-term romantic connections that exist without labels, jealousy, or pressure.
She’s quick to clarify: this isn’t about fleeting flings or one-night stands. In fact, she’s firmly against those.
Instead, these are meaningful, ongoing relationships built on honesty and freedom.
“One’s been a friend for 11 years, one for seven,” she shared. “My kids know most of them.”
All five men are single. None are promised forever. And if any of them fall in love with someone else? Carol says she’d genuinely be happy for them.
“I’m not a jealous person,” she explained. “The goal of my life is to be happy — not to be in love.”
Life After Marriage — On Her Own Terms
Carol has been single since her split from journalist Des Kelly in 2007, following two marriages earlier in life. Looking back, she sees her 60s as a chapter many women never get the chance to fully enjoy.
“In your 30s, you’re building careers, answering to bosses, surviving,” she reflected. “But in your 60s? You finally get to choose which bits of life you enjoy.”
And she’s choosing joy.
Friendship, Freedom — And France
Fresh from a sun-soaked family holiday in France, Carol shared a makeup-free selfie with her best friend of 35 years, Craig Burton — a reminder that love doesn’t always come wrapped in romance.
“I’ve known Craigy B for over 35 years,” she wrote fondly. “We’ve laughed ever since.”
No glam. No pressure. No apologies.
For Carol Vorderman, happiness isn’t about settling down — it’s about standing firmly in who you are, choosing freedom, and refusing to let age define desire, independence, or joy.
And by the looks of it, she’s never felt more herself.
