All Creatures Great and Small has been a huge hit with viewers since it was re-booted on Channel 5 in 2020 – but what happened to the original cast members after the show ended?
All Creatures Great and Small has solidified its place on Channel 5, winning audiences since its revival in 2020.
The cherished show just wrapped up its fifth series, more than three decades after the original series concluded with its seventh season in 1990.
The programme follows the adventures of vet James Herriot and his wife Helen in the Yorkshire Dales, a narrative inspired by a series of books written by Alf Wight.
Initially, the first series, consisting of six episodes and a Christmas special, was filmed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first book’s release in the James Herriot series.
Earlier this year, PBS announced that the series had been renewed for a fifth and sixth series, with Callum Woodhouse returning as Tristan Farnon, reports Express.
The reboot’s triumph echoes the success of the original series, which premiered in 1978 and enjoyed a prosperous run for over ten years.
The show propelled actors like Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy into stardom. But where are the original cast members now, 30 years after the show ended?
Christopher Timothy (James Herriot)

Christopher took centre stage in the cast as James Herriot, featuring in all 90 episodes of the original series.
His television career didn’t end with the show, as he continued to be a recognisable face in homes.
The actor later assumed the character of Mac McGuire in the BBC soap opera Doctors and made a special guest appearance in The Bill’s 2009 New Year’s Day special.
In 2017, Christopher, who is now 83, joined the cast of BBC EastEnders as series regular Ted Murray.
Following this, he’s also appeared in episodes of Midsomer Murders, Shakespeare and Hathaway: Private Investigators and Kate and Koji.
Christopher also contributed his voice to the first nine series of Channel 5’s documentary programme The Yorkshire Vet.
Robert Hardy (Siegfried Farnon)

Actor Robert Hardy played Siegfried Farnon in the much-loved show and received a BAFTA nomination for his portrayal of the grumpy and eccentric vet.
When All Creatures finished, Robert starred in a range of major TV and film productions, including the BBC’s 1994 adaptation of Middlemarch, the 1997 film Mrs Dalloway and Sense and Sensibility, alongside Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.
However, in terms of his film career, Robert earned recognition for his role as Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter film series. Additionally, he portrayed Winston Churchill in several productions, most notably in Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years (1981). This particular film earned him yet another BAFTA nomination.
Robert’s final acting role was in 2017 before he died at the age of 91 on 3 August 2017 at Denville Hall, a retirement home for actors.
Carol Drinkwater (Helen Herriot series 1-3)

Carol played James’ wife, Helen, for the initial three seasons of the much-loved show before stepping down from the role.
Her acting pursuits led her to various roles on the small screen and in cinema. She portrayed Elizabeth in the TV mini-series Captain James Cook and was also seen in the film adaptation of Beryl Bainbridge’s book, An Awfully Big Adventure.
While chatting on Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh a while back, she shared her reason for leaving her role as Helen.
She said: “I’d given everything I could, and I couldn’t think where else I could take the role because there was no more material. I wasn’t leaving in any kind of spiteful thing. The BBC was so angry with me that they put a ban on using me.”
Lynda Bellingham (Helen Herriot series 4-7)

Stepping into Carol’s shoes, Lynda took on the beloved character of Helen in series four and remained with the show until it ended.
Like Peter, she too had a stint in Doctor Who and played a significant part in At Home with the Braithwaites following her time on All Creatures.
She joined Loose Women as a regular panellist in 2007, quickly becoming a fan favourite. In 2009, she strutted her stuff on Strictly Come Dancing’s seventh series with professional dancer Darren Bennett.
Tragically, Lynda was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in July 2013 and died from the illness in October 2014.
Peter Davison (Tristan Farnon)

In 1975, Peter launched his TV career but skyrocketed to fame three years later as Tristan Farnon.
This recognition was amplified when he took on the iconic mantle of the fifth Doctor in Doctor Who, mesmerizing viewers from 1981 to 1984.
Adding to the Doctor Who lineage, Peter’s eldest daughter, Georgia, is married to actor David Tennant, who is renowned for his portrayals of the tenth and 14th incarnations of the Doctor in the BBC series.
Beyond his adventures in time travel, Peter has an impressive array of TV roles under his belt, including characters like David Braithwaite in At Home with the Braithwaites, Dr Stephen Daker in A Very Peculiar Practice and Henry Sharpe in Law and Order: UK.
In his latest acting endeavours, Peter has taken on roles such as The Vicar in ITV’s The Larkins, portrayed Peter in Beyond Paradise and filled the role of ACP Gordon Stewart in The Gold.
Viewers might also recognise him from his guest spots on programmes like Grantchester, Vera, and Call the Midwife.
