When Cruz Beckham saw his dad’s documentary about his life he was left amazed by his ex-Manchester United father’s footballing prowess.

Victoria Beckham has opened up about her husband David’s award winning documentary – revealing son Cruz didn’t know how “good” his father was at football until he saw it.

The former Spice Girl turned fashion designer spoke to Harper’s Bazaar about the impact of her husband’s Netflix show Beckham – ahead of her own upcoming docu-series.

Soccer legend David won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League during his career with Manchester United, before going on to play with Real Madrid and LA Galaxy.

But Victoria, 50, said it took a TV show about the ex-winger to make 19-year-old Cruz appreciate his dad’s success.

She said: “It was funny, actually. Cruz was like: ‘I didn’t realise that dad was so good at football.’

“You forget it was a long time ago. They were always at the games, but they were really little, and too young to understand.”

The mother-of-four also talks the public shaming of her husband after he was red carded during the 1988 World Cup. He was sent off in a match against Argentina, which England then lost.

She admits she would struggle to deal with anything similar happening to Romeo – who is following in his father’s footsteps, playing for Brentford B.

She said: “When it happened, David was the same age that Romeo is now. That’s a lot for a 22-year-old. When you’re in it, there’s that sink-or-swim feeling, and you just get on with it. And we had each other, and the rest is history.

“But the thought of my Romeo having to go through it … I don’t know how he would handle that. I don’t know how anyone would handle that. But we didn’t have a choice.”

Now Victoria has picked up the entrepreneur gong at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards 2024.

She appears on one of a suite of covers for the magazine’s December/January issue – wowing in elegant black and white.

And in a interview with the magazine the mother of four talks about her pride in her clothing and beauty business, – and how she used to enjoy being chased by the Paparazzi, but doesn’t any more.

“You have to go through those times to make you, ultimately, who you are,” she says.

“I suppose it used to be fun to go out and be chased by paparazzi walking down Bond Street – and you would dress knowing you were going to get that. I don’t want that any more.

“I’ve been doing this too long. I suppose I did when I was growing up but, nowadays, there’s just too much going on; too busy; too many kids to worry about.

“I woke up at 50, and I gave a s*** less.”

Victoria’s new Netflix documentary is less personal than her husband’s, according to the interview in https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/victoriabeckham

While there will be elements of family life and the kids, Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 22, Cruz, and Harper, 13, she said it would focus on her business , which turned a profit for the first time last year.

“It’s slightly more targeted on the entrepreneur, the designer of the brand. ..it’s really shining a light on the business, especially for America, That’s the main reason for doing this.”

She added: “The company has been through so much over the last 17 years – ups, downs, restructuring… it’s been quite the journey.

“There was a point when this brand was all fires, and every day we were putting them out. But when I created the fragrance, that’s when I believe that we turned from a brand into a house.

“I’ve spent years building the damn foundations. Now I can start really building the house.

“A friend was talking to one of the kids recently, and they said I was a builder. And that’s what I am.”

The December/January issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK is on sale from November 6.
