Spice Girls left ‘fuming’ as Geri Halliwell blocks ambitious TV drama about their lives

The creators of Netflix smash hit The Crown reportedly want to make a TV show about the Spice Girls – but a report has suggested that the project has been nixed by Ginger Spice

A fresh feud is reportedly rumbling between the Spice Girls after Geri Halliwell nuked plans for a TV show about their fame.

The Wannabe singers exploded onto the music scene in 1996 when they unleashed their debut single – and went on to be one of the most successful British bands in the world. The fivesome – consisting of Geri, 51, Victoria Beckham, 50, Mel B, 49, Mel C, 50, and Emma Bunton, 48 – went on to release two albums before Ginger Spice sensationally quit to pursue a solo career.

The remaining four released a third album before disbanding and pursuing solo projects of their own. The group have reformed in various incarnations – but have not performed together as a five since the London Olympics of 2012.

The friends appeared on good terms when they reunited earlier this year to celebrate Vicky’s 50th birthday – but it seems various tensions have formed in the months since. And now a report has suggested the group if being torn apart over thwarted plans for a drama about their careers and lives.

The Sun reports that Left Bank Pictures, who made the iconic Netflix series The Crown, planned to make a biopic series about the girls – but Geri seemingly slammed the breaks on the project. A source told the outlet: “It would have seen five actresses taking on the roles of Posh, Ginger, Scary, Sporty and Baby.

“The venture would have landed them all pay deals of around £1million for essentially not lifting a finger. But as the negotiations ramped up, the others were told Geri had objected. The plans have basically been thrown out.”

The source added: “They wanted to have the agreement of all of the band and without Geri it’s hard to make it happen.” The Mirror has approached representatives of the group for comment.

The report comes less than a month after Mel B branded her fellow bandmates “d**kheads” for banning her from a group text chat. The I Want You Back singer made the surprise comment while starring in an episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks in a 90s special. Mel was asked why her fellow Spice Girls booted her from their group chat, and she said: “Because I’m Northern and say what I think and feel and I’m constantly saying to the girls, ‘We need to go back on tour’.” Asked for more details, the Feels So Good singer quipped: “Because they’re d**kheads.”

Fans have been hoping that the group would reform for another tour – with all five girls taking part. But earlier this year, Victoria appeared to rule out the suggestion of a 30th anniversary tour. Downplaying plans, she said: “It would be lovely for us to do something to celebrate, a dinner or a lunch, but it won’t be any more.”
