Emily Atack thought pregnancy ‘would protect her’ from online abuse from vile trolls

Emily Atack, like many women, gets a lot of online hate from users who comment and nitpick about every part of her life from her body to her pregnancy and more

Emily Atack admitted she thought being pregnant would ‘protect her’ from receiving online abuse from vile trolls.

The former Inbetweeners star is set to welcome her firstborn in the coming weeks with her partner, Dr Alistair Garner, whom she is believed to have been dating since the summer of 2023. However, the pair go way back and are childhood friends whose friendship blossomed into a romance.

Emily, like many women, gets a lot of online hate from users who comment and nitpick about every part of her life from her body to her pregnancy and more. The star is no stranger to sharing screenshots of the rude (and sometimes x-rated) messages she receives from trolls but recently admitted she thought pregnancy would change things.

Appearing on Loose Women on Friday, Emily discussed her pregnancy before the conversation switched to online trolls criticising her for anything and everything. “Just as women, we’re self-conscious going to the shop sometimes,” she said. “I’ve just let all those things go. I’m eating all the things I want to eat, I’m not worrying about my weight. I spend my life worrying about my weight.

Linda Robson asked about the time she was slammed for cradling her bump on the red carpet. Emily answered: “Yes, that was a new one. I’ve been criticised for a lot of things but… I naively thought that being pregnant would protect me from online abuse in some way. It really doesn’t.

“People will find something. People were writing, ‘you think you’re superior to everyone else by touching your bump’. What world are we living in if I can’t cradle my bump? It’s my first baby and I’m so excited.” She was referring to the BAFTA Awards when she walked the red carpet in a floor-length white gown with a cape.

After the glitzy event, Emily posted photos on her social media but was hit with nasty remarks over the fact she was holding her baby bump in the snaps. Emily responded to the comments after someone nastily wrote: “How heavy is the bump? Not seen a picture with your hand off it.”

The star perfectly hit back: “I find this so interesting. I, like so many women, get so many comments and questions like this (mainly from men) asking why I feel the need to always be cradling my baby bump, or touching it in some way. It seems to really irritate some people.
