Denise Welch says she would rather pledge allegiance to Harry and Meghan over King Charles

It was recently revealed that the public has been invited to join a ‘chorus of millions’ to swear allegiance to the King and his heirs, with Loose Women star Denise Welch weighing in on the debate

Loose Women’s Denise Welch revealed she would rather pledge allegiance to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle than King Charles III.

On Monday, the Loose Women panel discussed the King’s coronation as well as the changes made to the ancient ceremony.

It was recently revealed the public has been invited to join a “chorus of millions” to swear allegiance to the King and his heirs.

Lambeth Palace said it was hoped the significant change to the historic service will result in a “great cry around the nation and around the world of support for the King”.

However, not everyone agreed with the oath – said to be more of an “invitation” than an “expectation” – and the topic was discussed on the ITV talk show.

Ruth Langsford asked: “So it’s a big thing [the coronation], Denise. Will you be watching but more importantly, will you be pledging your allegiance to King Charles?”

An unamused Denise answered: “What do you think?”

She continued: “I’ve got nothing against the royal family. However, of late, I am pledging my allegiance, if any, to Harry and Meghan.

“Because of that, I won’t be pledging my allegiance. I don’t even know what you’re pledging for. I think we share the same views. I am loyal. I would pledge my allegiance to my family and that’s all. I think it’s very outdated.

“And I’m just not a fan of what’s going on at the moment. So I won’t be pledging my allegiance to them but I wish them all the very best in their King and Queen-ness.”

Members of the public watching the Coronation on television, online or gathered in the open air on big screens will be asked to pledge their allegiance to the King.

It will be the first Homage of the People – a modern addition that will see people across the UK and overseas realms invited to swear an oath to the new monarch.

It replaces the traditional Homage of Peers, in which a long line of hereditary peers knelt and made a pledge to the monarch in person.

The Archbishop will call upon “all persons of goodwill in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of the other realms and the territories to make their homage, in heart and voice, to their undoubted King, defender of all”.

The Coronation oath in full reads: “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God.”
