Loose Women star Denise Welch has confirmed her son Matty Healy has got engaged just months from his split from Taylor Swift as she branded his fiancée ‘gorgeous’ and revealed details of their romance

Denise Welch has confirmed her son Matty Healy’s engagment, insisting she has “everything she wants in a daughter in law”.

The Loose Women star addressed the rumoured engagement after Matty shared a snap of his girlfriend Gabbriette Bechtel wearing a ring on Instagram. Denise said: “I have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged. They went over to see their friends Charli and George in New York. I woke up this morning to the fact they’ve put it on Instagram. Instagram official, he has got engaged to Gabbriette. Black diamond, he had it made for her and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

“She is from Los Angeles, she is absolutely gorgeous, she does have a rat. We couldn’t be happier, she is everything that I would want in a daughter in law.” Model and musician Gabbriette, 26, showed off her huge diamond ring on social media while watching Charli XCX perform. Captioning the snap, she said: “Marrying the 1975 is very brat @trumanblack.” Matty, who is the lead singer of band The 1975, re-shared Gabbriette’s snap onto his own account.

Matty, who is the son of Denise and Tim Healy, started dating Gabbreitte last September. She is the lead singer of punk rock band Nasty Cherry. Their romance came after the high profile fling between Matty and pop star Taylor Swift. Taylor has since gone on to enjoy a high-profile relationship with Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce.

Fans were stunned by the engagement news as they flocked to social media to share their thoughts. One said: “cannot believe matty healy just announced his engagement by reposting his fiancées story AFTER a thousand memes and tweets. we are so back.” Another added: “I just know her wedding dress is going to be so gothic and cool. I can’t wait.” Someone else commented: “So happy for them! They both deserve all the happiness!”

A fan shared: “I said to my mom I have a feeling he will marry gabbriette I feel like she’s the one he’s gonna stay with and damn was I right.” Earlier this year, Matty was snapped introducing Gabbriette to his family, including Denise. The couple supported the Loose Women star at her theatre stint in Manchester. Gabbriette spent time with Matty’s family at the show, including his younger brother Louis Healy, 22, their father Tim Healy, 72, and his wife Joan Anderton, 62.

Denise shared a snap of them all together and wrote in the caption of the post: “Lovely to have the family in to see mum at work!!!” In a candid chat with the Daily Mail, Matty’s aunt and Denise’s sister Debbie revealed the star is “very happy” in his new relationship with Gabbriette and indicated their family “know a bit more about what went on” with Swift “than has been in the press”. Taylor and Matty, who initially crossed paths and sparked a flirtation in 2014, had a fleeting romance last year when he flew out to join her on the Nashville stop of her Era’s tour.
