Coronation Street star makes dig at Liz Truss after character is compared to disastrous ex-Tory leader

Sally Dynevor was on the Loose Women panel this Monday, May 20, as she reacted to an iconic Coronation Street moment – which later inspired a hilarious dig at Liz Truss.

Coronation Street legend Sally Dynevor left the Loose Women panel in stitches after delivering a quip about Liz Truss and her short-lived stay at 10 Downing Street.

The former Leader of the Conservative Party has gone down in history for spending a total of 49 days in office as Prime Minister, before Rishi Sunak took over the role on October 25, 2022.

Her ultra-short leadership was likened to the lifespan of a lettuce by amused reporters and a livestream titled “Can Liz Truss outlast a lettuce?” was even broadcasted, showing an iceberg lettuce had managed to stay fresh for longer than Liz Truss remained in office.

Sally, 60, had a clear memory of the running joke as she was invited to look back on her Weatherfield alter-ego Sally Metcalfe’s mayor campaign, in 2017.

Diehard fans of the long-running ITV drama will remember Underworld machinist Sally making a bid to be mayor of Weatherfield after a successful campaign to be a councillor and to gather up all the votes she needed, the family woman roped in her youngest daughter Sophie, partner (and now husband) Tim Metcalfe and former spouse Kevin Webster, respectively portrayed on screens by Brooke Vincent, Joe Duttine and Michael Le Vell.

The trio had no other choice but to star in Sally’s hilarious campaign video – which the soap star was forced to watch again while on the set of Loose Women. “Don’t be silly, vote Sally”, Sophie, Tim and Kevin notably chanted. Sally’s campaign was eventually successful as she was elected Mayor of Weatherfield. Unfortunately, she was forced to resign a year later due to a fraud scandal and was event sentenced to four years behind bars… only for Duncan Radfield’s involvement to be exposed later on.

When asked about the storyline by Charlene White, Sally Dynevor admitted that the storyline “gave her a taste for the political lifestyle.” But it also made her reach the conclusion that her on-screen alter ego could do a better job than Liz Truss as she suggested, sending the panel and audience members into a fit of laughter: “she’s a bit like Liz truss, isn’t she, but I think she’d last longer than a lettuce.”

During her appearance on the talk show, Sally briefly shared her joy after her daughter Phoebe confirmed she was engaged to her partner Cameron Fuller. The 29-year-old, who gained worldwide recognition as an actress in the first season of the Netflix series Bridgerton, sparked engagement rumours at the Met Gala, where she showcased a stunning diamond ring.

The pair have been romantically linked since August, 2023, igniting romance rumours for the first time when they were spotted strolling through London, hand in hand.
